# HR Platforms Face an AI Agent Challenge and What It Means for HR Careers in 2026

Gartner predicts 60% of HR work tasks will run through AI agents or LLM interfaces by 2030, yet McKinsey found only 19% of HR processes in Europe use gen AI.

[Inc.](https://www.inc.com/netta-jenkins/are-hr-platforms-becoming-extinct-ai-agents-are-changing-the-game/91403537) is asking whether HR platforms are becoming extinct, and its own answer is that [HR platforms have not suddenly lost their value, but companies now have another option](https://www.inc.com/netta-jenkins/are-hr-platforms-becoming-extinct-ai-agents-are-changing-the-game/91403537). [Gartner](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age) predicts that [by 2030, 60% of HR work tasks will be completed through an intelligent agent or LLM-centric interface](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age), while [McKinsey's HR Monitor 2025](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025) found that [only 19 percent of core HR processes in Europe are enhanced with gen AI](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025). At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) we read forecasts like these for what they do to the people doing the work, not the software doing it. This one is written for HR professionals, and the useful part is the distance between what analysts forecast and what companies have actually deployed.

## What happened

The claim that started this round is that the platform model itself is in question. [Inc.](https://www.inc.com/netta-jenkins/are-hr-platforms-becoming-extinct-ai-agents-are-changing-the-game/91403537) published a piece arguing that for decades [companies have bought HR platforms to solve HR problems](https://www.inc.com/netta-jenkins/are-hr-platforms-becoming-extinct-ai-agents-are-changing-the-game/91403537), and that the question is [no longer simply which HR platform should we buy, but increasingly what can we build](https://www.inc.com/netta-jenkins/are-hr-platforms-becoming-extinct-ai-agents-are-changing-the-game/91403537). Its framing is careful, noting the issue [isn't that HR platforms suddenly have no value, but that companies now have another option](https://www.inc.com/netta-jenkins/are-hr-platforms-becoming-extinct-ai-agents-are-changing-the-game/91403537).

The numbers behind that argument come from research houses rather than from the platforms themselves. [Gartner](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age) published its 60% prediction in a [December 2025 Q&A on building future-ready HR teams](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age), adding that [HR must anticipate where support demands will rise and assess how much their staff must adapt](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age). The same Q&A warns that [HR's roles and skills are often locked into HR's transactional past](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age), and it points to metrics such as [tracking the number of HR staff moving into the business](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age).

[McKinsey](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-organization-blog/hrs-dual-mandate-in-the-ai-era) supplies the value figure. It [estimates that AI could generate $150 billion to $200 billion in annual global value in HR alone](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-organization-blog/hrs-dual-mandate-in-the-ai-era), that [two-thirds of HR processes can be partially or fully automated](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-organization-blog/hrs-dual-mandate-in-the-ai-era), and that [the automation potential of the people function is expected to accelerate by a decade](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-organization-blog/hrs-dual-mandate-in-the-ai-era). McKinsey's own conclusion from that is pointed. It argues that [an HR function that has not reimagined its own processes has limited standing to ask others to reimagine theirs, and it must go first](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-organization-blog/hrs-dual-mandate-in-the-ai-era).

> By 2030, 60% of HR work tasks will be completed through an intelligent agent or LLM-centric interface, [according to Gartner](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age).

That is the forecast. The measured adoption is well behind it, and that gap matters for anyone whose job is in HR. A forecast tells you where the money is trying to go. A survey of today tells you how far it has actually got, and how much human work sits in between.

Gartner's own [HR operating model guidance](https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/hr-operating-model) makes the same point from the inside. It says [AI adoption in HR has surged, reaching 95% of CHROs by the end of 2025](https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/hr-operating-model), yet [nearly three-quarters of HR leaders report only moderate or minimal returns from their AI investments](https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/hr-operating-model). It describes AI solutions as [poised to augment 100% and perform up to 50% of HR's current tasks](https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/hr-operating-model), which is a statement about tasks rather than headcount.

## Where the coverage agrees, and where it splits

Everyone agrees on the direction. None of these sources disputes that transactional HR work is being automated. The disagreement is about what that leaves behind for the people who do it today.

Gartner's two framings are not identical. Its press release says [60% of HR work tasks](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age), while its operating model article leads with the line that [by 2030, half of HR's work will be done by AI](https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/hr-operating-model), and in its body says [50% of current HR activities will be AI-automated or performed by AI agents](https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/hr-operating-model). The two figures count different things, tasks in one case and activities in the other, and both are projections rather than measurements.

The sharper split is between the extinction reading and the architect reading. [SHRM](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers), in a blog for its India audience, sets the extinction version up in order to knock it down, describing [a version of the AI automation story that positions HR professionals as most likely to be left behind](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers), in which [process work becomes automated and people doing it become redundant](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers). Its response is that [that version is wrong, and the data supports this](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers).

The data it leans on is McKinsey's. [SHRM](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers) describes McKinsey's HR Monitor 2025 as [a survey of 1,925 companies and 4,000 employees](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers), and says [the most common gen AI deployments in HR are meant for time tracking and absence management at 23%, employee data administration at 21%, and automation of repetitive tasks at 21%](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers). SHRM calls these [transactional functions that save time but represent the lowest tier of AI capability in HR](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers).

McKinsey's own [HR Monitor 2025 report](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025), published in July 2025 as [a comprehensive benchmark for the European HR landscape](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025), found that [only 19 percent of core HR processes in Europe are enhanced with gen AI, and for 32 percent of HR processes, HR departments are still in pilot phases](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025). It says this [signals that most organizations are far from realizing gen AI's full potential](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025).

> Only 19 percent of core HR processes in Europe are enhanced with gen AI and 32 percent are still in pilot phases, [according to McKinsey](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025).

The same report found gaps well beyond AI. [About 36 percent of employees across Europe and the United States are not satisfied with their current employer](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025). [Only 18 percent of surveyed organizations with more than 1,000 employees currently use specialized SSCs in HR](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025). In the United States, [only 12 percent of HR leaders say they do strategic workforce planning with at least a three-year focus](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025).

Read those numbers against the forecast and the picture changes. McKinsey's dual mandate piece says [two-thirds of HR processes can be partially or fully automated](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-organization-blog/hrs-dual-mandate-in-the-ai-era). Its HR Monitor found [19 percent of core HR processes in Europe enhanced with gen AI](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025), with [32 percent of HR processes still in pilot phases](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025). [SHRM](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers) explains the gap by arguing that [the true gap limiting AI automation's impact in HR is not technology](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers) but [process intelligence, knowing how to shape, guide, and adapt tools effectively](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers). In its words, [tools are bought, pilots are launched, but progress stalls without upstream process mapping](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers).

The wider labor data shows employers planning for both readings at once. The [World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025](https://www.weforum.org/press/2025/01/future-of-jobs-report-2025-78-million-new-job-opportunities-by-2030-but-urgent-upskilling-needed-to-prepare-workforces/), published in January 2025, draws on [data from over 1,000 companies in 22 industries and 55 economies](https://www.weforum.org/press/2025/01/future-of-jobs-report-2025-78-million-new-job-opportunities-by-2030-but-urgent-upskilling-needed-to-prepare-workforces/). It found [63% of employers already citing the skills gap as the key barrier they face](https://www.weforum.org/press/2025/01/future-of-jobs-report-2025-78-million-new-job-opportunities-by-2030-but-urgent-upskilling-needed-to-prepare-workforces/) to business transformation. It also found that [77% of employers plan to upskill workers](https://www.weforum.org/press/2025/01/future-of-jobs-report-2025-78-million-new-job-opportunities-by-2030-but-urgent-upskilling-needed-to-prepare-workforces/), while [41% plan to reduce their workforce as AI automates certain tasks](https://www.weforum.org/press/2025/01/future-of-jobs-report-2025-78-million-new-job-opportunities-by-2030-but-urgent-upskilling-needed-to-prepare-workforces/).

The build versus buy argument and the process intelligence argument turn out to be the same argument seen from different ends. [Inc.](https://www.inc.com/netta-jenkins/are-hr-platforms-becoming-extinct-ai-agents-are-changing-the-game/91403537) says HR leaders can now [build AI agents specifically designed around their company's problems](https://www.inc.com/netta-jenkins/are-hr-platforms-becoming-extinct-ai-agents-are-changing-the-game/91403537). [SHRM](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers) says that before an HR workflow automation tool can function, [someone must document the current process, identify decision points, flag exceptions, and define the desired outcome](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers), which it calls [a process activity, not a technical one](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers). If a company builds its own agent, it has to build it to a description of how the company actually works, and the people best placed to write that description are the ones who have been running the process by hand. That is also why [an agent can work while the workflow around it breaks](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/ai-agents-work-fine-workflow-broken-2026).

## What this means for your job search

If you work in HR, read these forecasts as being about tasks, not people. [Gartner's 60%](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age) describes HR work tasks, and the most common gen AI uses [SHRM](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers) cites from McKinsey's survey are [time tracking and absence management, employee data administration, and automation of repetitive tasks](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers). If your role is mostly those tasks, the forecast is about you. If it is mostly judgement, escalation and design, the same research describes that as the work AI cannot do on its own.

[SHRM](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers) names three core areas [where AI cannot operate independently, tailoring workflows, ensuring robust data quality, and guiding exception management](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers). For HR teams in India, it describes a profile built on [process analysis skills that allow HR professionals to document, evaluate, and redesign workflows](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers), data literacy, AI governance covering [fairness, auditability, and exception management](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers), and change management. None of those is a coding skill. They overlap heavily with [the skills that make HR professionals hireable alongside AI agents](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/hr-manages-ai-agents-skills-hireable-2026).

So put them on the CV, in those words. An HR professional who has run a payroll migration, cleaned an employee data set before an audit, or written the escalation rules for a leave policy has done process mapping, data governance and exception design. SHRM's examples are specific, noting that in IT and ITeS firms, [moonlighting, parallel employment, and contract to permanent transitions create complex data states in HR systems](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers). Someone who has untangled records like those has done data governance, whatever the job title said. [What an HR professional does day to day](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/what-does-an-hr-professional-do) has always contained this work, and [the strategic HR skills that belong on a resume](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/hr-skills-for-resume) are easier to show when you name the process you fixed.

The extinction framing also skips what the adoption data shows. Where [32 percent of HR processes in Europe are still in pilot phases](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025) and [nearly three-quarters of HR leaders report only moderate or minimal returns](https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/hr-operating-model), the software is not yet doing the job on its own. That is leverage for the people who understand the work, and it is strongest while so many processes sit in pilot. For the two sides of that bet in practice, compare [the case for training HR staff](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/why-hr-leaders-betting-worker-training-2026) with [the Uber HR restructuring](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/uber-cuts-hr-people-division-2026-restructuring).

The practical move is to attach yourself to the automation project rather than wait to be automated by it. Volunteer to map the process the pilot is failing on. Own the data quality problem nobody wants. Write the exception rules. [SHRM](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers) says professionals who [define escalation protocols, supervise edge cases, and interpret AI-generated outputs in context are doing non-automatable work](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers). That work still matters after [an HR department is handed to a chatbot](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/amazon-ai-hr-chatbot-aza-workers-2026), because someone still has to decide what the chatbot does when the answer is not in the manual. [Whether HR really is facing extinction](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/hr-facing-extinction-what-it-means-job-seekers-2026) depends less on the forecast and more on which side of that line you are standing when the platform contract comes up for renewal.

## People Also Asked

### Q: How much HR work will AI actually do by 2030?

A: [Gartner](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2025-12-01-hr-leaders-must-build-future-ready-hr-teams-for-the-ai-age) predicts 60% of HR work tasks will be completed through an intelligent agent or LLM-centric interface by 2030, while its [operating model article](https://www.gartner.com/en/articles/hr-operating-model) says 50% of current HR activities will be AI-automated or performed by AI agents. [McKinsey](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-organization-blog/hrs-dual-mandate-in-the-ai-era) estimates two-thirds of HR processes can be partially or fully automated. All three are projections about tasks and processes rather than headcount.

### Q: Which HR jobs are safest from AI?

A: [SHRM](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers) argues the areas where AI cannot operate independently are tailoring workflows, ensuring robust data quality and guiding exception management. [McKinsey's HR Monitor 2025](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organization/our-insights/hr-monitor-2025) found only 19 percent of core HR processes in Europe are enhanced with gen AI and 32 percent are still in pilot phases.

### Q: Are companies really building their own HR tools instead of buying platforms?

A: [Inc.](https://www.inc.com/netta-jenkins/are-hr-platforms-becoming-extinct-ai-agents-are-changing-the-game/91403537) argues the question is shifting from which platform to buy to what can be built, since HR leaders can now build AI agents around their own problems. It is careful to say HR platforms have not suddenly lost their value, only that companies now have another option.

Future-proof your career by moving toward the work AI cannot do on its own. HR professionals who can map a process, govern its data and design its exceptions bring the skills that stalled pilots need.
