The rails are humming louder in upstate New York. [Alstom](https://www.alstom.com/), the global rail manufacturing leader, just announced plans to hire **120 manufacturing workers** at its Plattsburgh facility—a tangible sign that America's sustainable transportation buildout is creating real jobs, not just policy promises.

The company held a job fair on November 6 at its 71 Wall Street facility to fill positions in assembly, crane operations, welding, and industrial painting. For the Adirondack region, this represents a **34% workforce expansion** at a plant that's been a local economic anchor for three decades.

## The Contract Driving Growth

Alstom's hiring surge stems from its contract to manufacture **374 state-of-the-art commuter rail cars** for [NJ TRANSIT](https://www.njtransit.com/). The work represents part of a broader expansion following multiple major transit contracts in 2025.

Earlier this year, Alstom secured a **$2.3 billion contract** from the [Metropolitan Transportation Authority](https://new.mta.info/) to build more than **300 M-9A commuter rail cars**, with work split between Plattsburgh and the company's Hornell, NY location. Assemblyman Billy Jones estimated the MTA contract alone could create around **300 new jobs** across both facilities.

"We are happy to be entering such a strong growth phase and to continue to support the Adirondack region's economy," said Jeff Lambert, managing director of Alstom's Plattsburgh plant.

The math is straightforward: America's aging transit infrastructure needs replacement, and [Alstom](https://www.alstom.com/) is positioned to deliver. Once the **120 new employees** are added, the Plattsburgh facility's workforce will total approximately **470 workers**, up from the current **350**.

## What the Jobs Offer

All positions are full-time and include health insurance, generous 401(k) contributions, and paid time off. Managers interviewed candidates at the November job fair and expected to make conditional job offers the same day for qualified applicants.

The roles aren't entry-level. Alstom seeks skilled workers with experience in specialized manufacturing: welders who can work with precision on rail car components, crane operators comfortable handling multi-ton assemblies, industrial painters who understand the rigorous quality standards for transit vehicles, and assembly technicians versed in complex mechanical systems.

"Alstom offers competitive wages, great benefits, and the chance to make something that impacts millions of people," Lambert noted, emphasizing the plant's importance to the industrial base of the Adirondack region.

Alstom employs more than **86,000 people** globally and has been named one of the "World's Best Employers" by [Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/). The company emphasizes training and advancement opportunities—critical in an industry where skilled manufacturing labor remains in short supply.

## Plattsburgh's Rail Legacy

Alstom's history in Plattsburgh dates back to 1995 when the facility opened as Bombardier. Alstom acquired the business in 2020 and continued manufacturing the same product line. The plant's track record speaks to American manufacturing capability.

The Plattsburgh facility is the birthplace of **4,000 cars** for the [New York City subway](https://new.mta.info/), more than **1,000** for [San Francisco BART](https://www.bart.gov/), and hundreds of others for [Chicago](https://www.transitchicago.com/), [Maryland](https://www.mta.maryland.gov/), and [New Jersey](https://www.njtransit.com/) transit systems.

North Country Chamber of Commerce President Garry Douglas praised Alstom for being part of a "successful manufacturing cluster" locally. The hiring wave comes alongside growth at other regional manufacturers like Micro Bird, creating what Douglas called "a very positive period for our transportation equipment cluster."

The facility's role goes beyond just local impact. Train undercarriages assembled in Plattsburgh combine with body shells from Hornell and propulsion systems from Pennsylvania—a supply chain that touches multiple states and hundreds of vendors.

## The Rail Renaissance

Alstom's expansion reflects broader momentum in sustainable transportation. The global rail transport market is projected to grow from **$540.9 billion in 2025** to **$932 billion by 2034**, fueled by a **6.2% CAGR**.

What's driving this growth? A convergence of climate policy, urbanization, and economic pragmatism. Rising urbanization and population growth are driving the need for efficient, high-capacity public transport solutions, making rail a preferred mode of travel in congested cities.

Government investments aimed at improving infrastructure and service quality while expanding high-speed rail networks are crucial in meeting environmental targets and alleviating road congestion. The [European Green Deal](https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/priorities-2019-2024/european-green-deal_en) plans to spend **€87.5 billion** on rail infrastructure, while the US [Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act](https://www.whitehouse.gov/bipartisan-infrastructure-law/) provides **$66 billion** for rail corridor construction, track renovation, and safety enhancements.

[Asia Pacific](https://www.un.org/) is estimated to lead the market with a **72.4% share** in 2025, driven by strong government support for rail infrastructure development. But North America is holding its own—the US railroad market is projected to grow at a **5.5% CAGR** from 2025 to 2030, driven by infrastructure investments and emphasis on sustainable transportation.

## Manufacturing Momentum

The Plattsburgh hiring represents more than a single company's growth. It's evidence that the much-discussed "reshoring" of American manufacturing is happening in specific sectors where the US maintains competitive advantages: complex systems, precision manufacturing, and large-scale assembly.

Rail manufacturing requires significant capital investment, skilled labor, and proximity to customers—all factors that favor domestic production. Unlike consumer electronics or basic textiles, you can't easily offshore the assembly of 80-foot commuter rail cars.

[Alstom](https://www.alstom.com/) is identified as a global leader in rail infrastructure, offering a comprehensive range of products and services including rolling stock, signaling systems, and infrastructure solutions. The company's willingness to expand US manufacturing capacity signals confidence in long-term American transit investment.

For the **120 workers** who'll soon be hired, the jobs offer something increasingly rare: skilled manufacturing work that can't be automated away or shipped overseas, with competitive wages and benefits, building products that serve a clear public need.
