## Retail Giant Swings Layoff Ax

[Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/) is preparing to eliminate as many as **30,000 corporate positions** beginning October 28 in what would become the company's largest workforce reduction ever, according to multiple reports confirmed by [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/) and [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/).

The cuts will slash nearly **10% of Amazon's 350,000-strong corporate workforce**, spanning logistics, payments, video games, [Amazon Web Services](https://aws.amazon.com/), human resources, and operations. Employees are expected to receive termination emails starting Tuesday morning, with managers undergoing training Monday on how to deliver the news.

This dwarfs Amazon's previous record: the **27,000 corporate job cuts** rolled out between late 2022 and early 2023 when CEO Andy Jassy initiated cost-cutting measures after pandemic-era overexpansion. Since then, the company has implemented smaller, targeted reductions throughout 2024 and 2025, including **200 positions in January** and **100 roles in May**.

Amazon employs approximately **1.55 million workers globally**, with the vast majority staffing warehouses and fulfillment centers. These latest cuts target the knowledge worker segment—the MBAs, engineers, and corporate professionals who once viewed Amazon as a career pinnacle.

## AI Takes Center Stage

Jassy telegraphed this moment back in June with a memo that sent shockwaves through Amazon's corporate corridors. "We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs," he wrote. "It's hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce."

The CEO framed the shift as efficiency gains from deploying generative AI and AI agents extensively across company operations. Amazon is using artificial intelligence to optimize inventory placement, improve demand forecasting, enhance warehouse robot efficiency, and rebuild customer service chatbots—all tasks previously handled by humans.

In a July interview with [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/)'s Jim Cramer, Jassy doubled down: "There will be fewer people doing some of the jobs that the technology actually starts to automate." He urged employees to "be curious about AI, educate yourself, attend workshops and take trainings" and figure out "how to get more done with scrappier teams."

[Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/) currently has over **1,000 generative AI services and applications** either built or in development—what Jassy calls "a small fraction" of the company's ultimate AI ambitions. The company is investing over **$100 billion in capital expenditures** in 2025, with the majority funding AI infrastructure for [AWS](https://aws.amazon.com/).

## White-Collar Squeeze Intensifies

Amazon's cuts arrive amid a broader contraction in professional employment. According to [LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/)'s January 2025 Workforce Report, hiring for roles paying over **$125,000 annually has dropped 32%** year-over-year. The unemployment rate for recent college graduates ages 23-27 now sits at **4.59%**, up from **3.25% in 2019**.

[Layoffs.fyi](https://layoffs.fyi/) reports that **98,344 tech employees** across **216 companies** lost jobs in 2025 as of late October, with [Intel](https://www.intel.com/) leading at **22,000 cuts**. [Microsoft](https://www.microsoft.com/) eliminated approximately **15,000 positions**, while [Meta](https://www.meta.com/en-gb/about/?srsltid=AfmBOoqxAV7e4bgTalktufYf5bxa2oLwzxtoQKHc7QH6fwXV36uGgTGD) slashed **600 jobs** in its AI unit just last week.

The phenomenon has economists discussing a "white-collar recession"—a term describing disproportionate job losses among educated professionals in tech, finance, HR, and media even as overall unemployment remains historically low at **4.2%**. Professional and business services shed **46,100 roles** in recent months, while financial services dropped **17,000 positions**.

Corporate leaders across industries are explicitly connecting workforce reductions to AI adoption. [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/) CEO Marc Benioff claimed AI is already handling **30% to 50%** of his company's workload. [Ford](https://www.ford.com/) CEO Jim Farley warned AI will "replace literally half of all white-collar workers." [Klarna](https://www.klarna.com/) CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski reported shrinking headcount by **40%** partly through AI investments.

The disconnect is stark: while aggregate unemployment data suggests a healthy labor market, white-collar professionals describe brutal job searches with conversion rates from application to interview hovering around **1%**. One product marketer in Washington, D.C., submitted **1,500 applications** with only **20 interviews** to show for it.

## What Comes Next

Amazon's announcement lands just before the company reports quarterly earnings Thursday. The timing underscores a pattern emerging across big tech: restructure now, bank the cost savings, and present investors with leaner operations optimized for the AI era.

For Amazon's affected employees, the math is unforgiving. In a "frozen labor market" where companies aren't hiring aggressively, finding comparable white-collar roles takes **six to nine months** on average for senior-level professionals. The flood of highly credentialed ex-Amazon workers will intensify competition for already scarce positions.

Jassy's message to employees was stark but clear: adapt or get left behind. Those who "embrace this change, become conversant in AI, help us build and improve our AI capabilities internally" will be "well-positioned to have high impact," he wrote. For the **30,000 whose emails arrive Tuesday morning**, that opportunity has already passed.
