## Amazon Cuts 1800 Engineers Despite Innovation Push

[Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/) just dropped its most contradictory corporate strategy of 2025. While executives tout the urgent need to "innovate much faster than ever before," the tech giant eliminated nearly **1,900 engineering jobs**—40% of total cuts revealed in state filings. The company's 14,000-plus layoffs announced last month touched almost every business unit, but engineers bore the heaviest burden.

Documents filed in New York, California, New Jersey, and Amazon's home state of Washington showed that **nearly 40% of the more than 4,700 job cuts** in those states were engineering roles, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings reviewed by [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/). These figures represent only a segment of total layoffs, as not all state data is available due to varying reporting requirements.

The cuts mark the steepest workforce reduction in Amazon's 31-year history. For context, Amazon employed **1,578,000 people** as of September 30—double its 2019 headcount—making it one of the world's largest employers. The $2.3 trillion market cap company ranks fifth globally by valuation.

## The Innovation Paradox

Here's the contradiction that's making engineers shake their heads: Human Resources Chief Beth Galetti announced the layoffs with a memo emphasizing the importance of innovation—which Amazon will now pursue with significantly fewer engineers.

"This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we've seen since the Internet, and it's enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before," Galetti wrote. "We're convinced that we need to be organized more leanly, with fewer layers and more ownership, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and business."

The memo's logic doesn't quite add up. Amazon claims AI enables faster innovation, therefore it needs fewer people to innovate. But AI tools don't build themselves—they require engineers to develop, integrate, and maintain them. The company recently launched [Kiro](https://www.aboutamazon.com/), its coding assistant competing with [OpenAI](https://openai.com/) and [Cursor](https://www.cursor.com/), while simultaneously eliminating engineers who would typically deploy such tools.

CEO [Andy Jassy](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/company-news/andy-jassy) predicted in June that Amazon's corporate headcount will shrink in coming years alongside efficiency gains from AI. That forecast is proving self-fulfilling—but whether cutting engineers accelerates or hampers innovation remains the billion-dollar question.

The layoffs impacted various software engineer levels, but **SDE II roles (mid-level employees) were disproportionately affected**, WARN filings show. These mid-career engineers typically have 3-6 years of experience and represent crucial technical capability—they're past junior-level learning curves but haven't yet moved into pure management.

## Where the Cuts Hit Hardest

Amazon's gaming division took brutal hits across San Diego and Irvine, California studios. Steve Boom, Vice President of Audio, [Twitch](https://www.twitch.tv/), and Games, told staff in a memo that "significant role reductions" would occur in California game studios and the central publishing team.

Game designers, artists, and producers made up **more than 25% of total cuts in Irvine** and roughly **11% of layoffs** at San Diego offices, according to California filings. Amazon also announced it's halting much of its work on big-budget "triple-A" game development, specifically around massively multiplayer online (MMO) games.

The company has struggled in gaming despite major investments. It released MMOs including Crucible (which quickly shut down) and New World (which saw player numbers plummet after launch). Amazon was also developing an MMO based on "Lord of the Rings"—that project now appears dead.

Beyond gaming, Amazon significantly cut back its visual search and shopping teams, according to multiple employee LinkedIn posts. This is particularly ironic given that Amazon Lens and Lens Live—AI-powered visual search tools—launched just two months ago. The company is now maintaining these products with decimated teams.

The advertising business, one of Amazon's biggest profit centers, wasn't spared. **More than 140 ad sales and marketing roles vanished from New York offices alone**—representing 20% of cuts in that region. This comes as Amazon faces intensifying competition from [Google](https://www.google.com/) and [Meta](https://www.meta.com/) in digital advertising, a market where engineering talent determines product quality.

**More than 500 product managers and program managers** were eliminated based on WARN records from the four states, representing **over 10% of total cuts**. These roles typically bridge engineering and business strategy—losing them creates coordination gaps that slow product development.

## The AI Automation Irony

The AI boom is making software development jobs harder to come by as companies adopt coding assistants and so-called "vibe coding" platforms from vendors like Cursor, OpenAI, and [Cognition](https://www.cognition-labs.com/). Amazon released its own competitor called Kiro.

But here's the catch: AI coding tools augment engineers, they don't replace them. These tools help write boilerplate code, debug faster, and automate repetitive tasks. They don't architect systems, make strategic technical decisions, or understand business requirements. Companies still need engineers to direct AI tools, review generated code, and integrate components into larger systems.

Amazon appears to be betting that AI will deliver 40% productivity gains, allowing fewer engineers to accomplish the same work. That's a massive gamble. If AI coding assistants deliver 20-30% productivity improvements (optimistic but plausible), cutting 40% of engineering capacity creates a net deficit.

The company's sprawling business compounds this challenge. Amazon operates [AWS](https://aws.amazon.com/) (cloud computing), retail marketplaces, [Prime Video](https://www.primevideo.com/), [Alexa](https://www.amazon.com/alexa), advertising platforms, logistics networks, [Whole Foods](https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/), gaming, healthcare services, and more. Each business requires specialized engineering knowledge. Cutting broadly across divisions risks losing critical expertise that AI tools can't replicate.

## The Broader Tech Downsizing

Amazon joins a growing roster of tech companies slashing jobs despite strong cash reserves and profits. According to [Layoffs.fyi](https://layoffs.fyi/), nearly **113,000 jobs have been eliminated across 231 tech companies** in 2025 alone.

[Microsoft](https://www.microsoft.com/) announced multiple rounds totaling **9,000 employees (roughly 4% of its global workforce)**. [Meta](https://www.meta.com/in/), [Google](https://www.google.com/), and others have made similar cuts. The pattern suggests coordinated belt-tightening across the industry as companies shift from growth-at-all-costs to efficiency-focused operations.

Jassy acknowledged on Amazon's recent earnings call that cuts stem partly from a "culture" issue. An extended hiring spree created "a lot more layers" and slower decision-making. The company now aims to operate like "the world's largest startup"—apparently meaning fewer people doing more work.

But startups typically have lean teams because they lack resources, not by choice. Amazon has resources. It generated **$15.3 billion in net income** in Q3 2025 alone. The company isn't cutting for financial survival—it's cutting to boost profit margins and satisfy Wall Street's efficiency demands.

## What This Means for Engineers

For the roughly 1,900 engineers losing jobs, timing couldn't be worse. The tech job market has cooled considerably from 2021-2022 highs. While engineering roles still exist, competition has intensified as multiple big tech companies downsize simultaneously.

Mid-level engineers face particular challenges. They're too experienced (and expensive) for junior roles, but often lack the leadership experience or specialized expertise that commands premium senior positions. The SDE II cohort getting hit hardest sits in this uncomfortable middle.

The rise of AI coding tools adds another layer of uncertainty. Will companies hiring engineers expect candidates to be proficient with AI assistants? Will salary expectations adjust downward because AI supposedly makes engineers more productive? These questions don't have clear answers yet, but laid-off workers must navigate the uncertainty.

Some will land at Amazon competitors—[Walmart](https://www.walmart.com/), [Target](https://www.target.com/), and other retailers need engineers for e-commerce and logistics. Cloud competitors like [Microsoft Azure](https://azure.microsoft.com/) and [Google Cloud](https://cloud.google.com/) may absorb AWS engineers. Streaming services like [Netflix](https://www.netflix.com/) and [Apple TV+](https://www.apple.com/apple-tv-plus/) could hire from Prime Video's former staff.

But the synchronized nature of tech layoffs—with multiple companies cutting simultaneously—reduces available positions industry-wide. Engineers can't all jump to competitors when those competitors are also downsizing.

## The Strategic Gamble

Amazon is betting it can innovate faster with fewer people. That requires believing that AI tools, flatter organizations, and "leaner" teams deliver more than larger engineering organizations. Maybe it's right. Maybe AI genuinely enables such dramatic productivity gains that 60% of previous engineering capacity accomplishes 100% of previous output.

Or maybe Amazon is optimizing for quarterly profit margins at the expense of long-term technical capabilities. Cutting 40% of engineers from complex technical systems creates knowledge gaps, documentation holes, and "key person" risks where critical systems depend on a handful of remaining experts.

Only time will tell whether this strategy succeeds. Early 2025 will provide initial signals. Can Amazon ship products as quickly with reduced teams? Do AWS services remain reliable with fewer engineers monitoring them? Does Alexa improve or stagnate? Do competitors with larger engineering teams gain ground?

For now, nearly 1,900 engineers are updating LinkedIn profiles and reaching out to recruiters. They're the ones paying the immediate price for Amazon's efficiency push—whether or not it delivers the promised innovation acceleration.
