[American Airlines opened applications on October 5, 2026, for its 2027 flight attendant trainee classes](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/), and the window is [scheduled to remain open through mid-October](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/). Trainees hired in 2027 start at [$37.91 per flight hour](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [flight attendants on reserve are guaranteed 75 flight hours per month at the flight hour pay](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). [Training is not paid](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). The airline already has [more than 30,000 flight attendants](https://www.biztoday.news/2026/10/06/american-airlines-launches-2027-flight-attendant-applications-enhanced-interview-experience/) and is preparing to welcome new trainees, who are [expected to earn their wings in the first half of 2027](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/). For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers weighing a move into the cabin, American's [flight attendant FAQ](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html) lays out each stage of the hiring process, and [most new flight attendants spend their first 2+ years on reserve](https://flightattendants.aa.com/).

## What Did American Airlines Open on October 5?

The opening is for [flight attendant trainee classes](https://www.biztoday.news/2026/10/06/american-airlines-launches-2027-flight-attendant-applications-enhanced-interview-experience/), with [candidates selected during this hiring process beginning flight attendant training in 2027](https://flightattendants.aa.com/). [Applications opened on October 5](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/), and interested candidates can [learn more and apply directly at flightattendants.aa.com through mid-October](https://www.biztoday.news/2026/10/06/american-airlines-launches-2027-flight-attendant-applications-enhanced-interview-experience/).

This round comes with an [enhanced interview experience](https://www.biztoday.news/2026/10/06/american-airlines-launches-2027-flight-attendant-applications-enhanced-interview-experience/). American says it gives candidates [a transparent and realistic understanding of what it takes to earn their wings](https://www.biztoday.news/2026/10/06/american-airlines-launches-2027-flight-attendant-applications-enhanced-interview-experience/). In practice, that means showing applicants the [realities, rewards, and challenges associated with the profession](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/) before they apply, including [working on nights, weekends, and holidays, and spending one's first two years on reserve](https://airlinegeeks.com/2026/10/06/american-opens-flight-attendant-applications-for-2027/).

Senior people at the airline spoke about the role and the process. Chief People Officer Cole Brown said that "[improving the candidate experience is one of the many ways we're ensuring our people are equally committed and prepared to care for people on life's journey](https://www.biztoday.news/2026/10/06/american-airlines-launches-2027-flight-attendant-applications-enhanced-interview-experience/)." Vice President of Inflight Bobbi Wells described the airline's flight attendants as its [ultimate problem solvers](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/), and [emphasized that the career can be difficult at times and is not suited to everyone](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/). Senior Vice President of Talent and Culture Elizabeth Nieto said [a clearer view of flight attendant expectations can help candidates make educated decisions before accepting the role](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/).

> We want the process to mirror the hospitality and service our customers should expect when they travel with us, American's Chief People Officer Cole Brown said in [a news release](https://airlinegeeks.com/2026/10/06/american-opens-flight-attendant-applications-for-2027/).

## Has American Said How Many Flight Attendants It Will Hire?

A figure of [nearly 2,000 flight attendants for 2027](https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/american-airlines-hiring-nearly-2k-110116469.html) appears in silive.com coverage carried on Yahoo. No hiring total appears on [American's flight attendant careers site](https://flightattendants.aa.com/) or in [its FAQ page](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), so it is a media figure, not one printed on those American pages.

What American does say is narrower. It has [more than 30,000 flight attendants currently serving customers around the world](https://www.biztoday.news/2026/10/06/american-airlines-launches-2027-flight-attendant-applications-enhanced-interview-experience/) and is [preparing to invite and welcome new trainees](https://www.biztoday.news/2026/10/06/american-airlines-launches-2027-flight-attendant-applications-enhanced-interview-experience/). On where those trainees may land, silive.com coverage carried on Yahoo cites Queen City News for the report that [the top hiring airport hubs for 2027 are in Charlotte (CLT), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Miami (MIA) and Chicago (ORD)](https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/american-airlines-hiring-nearly-2k-110116469.html).

The airline is also [adding new routes and inflight amenities over the next few years](https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/american-airlines-hiring-nearly-2k-110116469.html), according to silive.com coverage carried on Yahoo.

## What Does $37.91 per Flight Hour Actually Pay?

Starting pay is [$37.91 per flight hour for trainees hired in 2027](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). In July 2024, American's flight attendants were [only compensated for time in the air](https://www.fortune.com/2024/07/26/american-airlines-offers-to-double-some-flight-attendants-pay-over-5-years-as-it-works-to-avoid-strike), and new hires now [receive boarding pay at half of the hourly rate for each flight boarded](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

The safety net is a monthly guarantee. [Flight attendants on reserve are guaranteed 75 flight hours per month at the flight hour pay](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [in months when you fly fewer hours, you will still be paid the 75-hour minimum](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). American puts the [estimated salary at $34,119 for a new flight attendant, based on the guaranteed minimum of 75 flight hours per month](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and that figure [does not include additional earnings such as per diem, premium pay or other incentives](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). The guarantee has limits, since [calling out sick or missing an assignment may reduce your guarantee](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

Three other pay lines sit on top of the hourly rate:

- **Per diem.** You are paid [for every hour from report to release of a trip](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), at [$2.95 per hour for domestic trips and $3.50 per hour for international trips](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).
- **Boarding pay.** The ratified contract [adds a new boarding pay premium that equals 50% of the hourly rate for all boardings based on published boarding times](https://airlinegeeks.com/2024/09/12/american-airlines-flight-attendants-ratify-new-contract/).
- **Language pay.** Flight attendants [qualified and designated as a speaker of a language that supports the operation](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html) [may be eligible for additional compensation when working on flights that require your language skills](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

Seniority matters too, since [the more seniority you build, the more opportunities you have to shape your schedule](https://flightattendants.aa.com/). Expect a short wait for money after training, since the [first paycheck is typically issued 2 to 3 weeks after graduation](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html) and is prorated.

## How Has Starting Pay Changed Since the Last Contract Talks?

In July 2024, a first-year flight attendant made [$30.35 per flight hour and would immediately begin making $35.82](https://www.fortune.com/2024/07/26/american-airlines-offers-to-double-some-flight-attendants-pay-over-5-years-as-it-works-to-avoid-strike) under the tentative deal with the [Association of Professional Flight Attendants](https://www.fortune.com/2024/07/26/american-airlines-offers-to-double-some-flight-attendants-pay-over-5-years-as-it-works-to-avoid-strike). At that time, [American's 28,000 flight attendants still had to vote on the agreement](https://www.fortune.com/2024/07/26/american-airlines-offers-to-double-some-flight-attendants-pay-over-5-years-as-it-works-to-avoid-strike). Members later ratified it, as [87% of members voted to approve the contract](https://airlinegeeks.com/2024/09/12/american-airlines-flight-attendants-ratify-new-contract/), and [compensation increases take effect on Oct. 1, 2024](https://airlinegeeks.com/2024/09/12/american-airlines-flight-attendants-ratify-new-contract/), according to the union. Trainees hired in 2027 start at [$37.91 per flight hour](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), which is above the [$35.82 a first-year attendant would immediately begin making and below the $40.42 a first-year attendant will make after five years](https://www.fortune.com/2024/07/26/american-airlines-offers-to-double-some-flight-attendants-pay-over-5-years-as-it-works-to-avoid-strike) of the deal.

APFA president Julie Hedrick [previously told Fortune](https://www.fortune.com/2024/07/26/american-airlines-offers-to-double-some-flight-attendants-pay-over-5-years-as-it-works-to-avoid-strike), "Our new-hire flight attendants are struggling." Fortune reported that an entry-level flight attendant hired at that time could [expect to make $27,315 a year, before taxes](https://www.fortune.com/2024/07/26/american-airlines-offers-to-double-some-flight-attendants-pay-over-5-years-as-it-works-to-avoid-strike), according to an employment verification letter from American that [circulated on Reddit](https://www.fortune.com/2024/07/26/american-airlines-offers-to-double-some-flight-attendants-pay-over-5-years-as-it-works-to-avoid-strike). A new flight attendant now has an [estimated salary of $34,119](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), which excludes per diem.

## Who Can Apply, and What Do You Need?

Eligibility questions are part of the first stage, where you [submit your application through American's careers site and answer its eligibility requirements](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). Multilingual skills are [valuable and help support operational needs](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), but [all candidates must first meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete the flight attendant selection process](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

Documents matter early. [All American Airlines flight attendants must have a valid passport before initial training](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [to interview for the position, your passport must be valid through at least December 31, 2027](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). You [must be able to travel without restrictions to all destinations served by American](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and if you hold a foreign passport or visa, [it is your responsibility to ensure you meet all travel requirements and understand where you are eligible to fly](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

There are physical and appearance rules too. The height minimum is that you [must be able to reach and remove emergency equipment from overhead bins without assistance](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), the maximum is that you [must have adequate head clearance in the cabin](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [visible tattoos are not permitted while in uniform or in training](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). Tattoos may be [covered with a uniform item or makeup, but bandages, see-through gauze, pantyhose or sleeve accessories may not be used](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). In uniform, [one earring per ear lobe is allowed and no other visible body piercings are permitted](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [decorative dental embellishments, including tooth gems, dental jewelry, grills and similar cosmetic adornments, are not permitted while in uniform, during training, or while performing company duties](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

Across the occupation, flight attendants [typically need a high school diploma or the equivalent and work experience in customer service](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/flight-attendants.htm), and [all flight attendants must be certified by the FAA](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/flight-attendants.htm), which happens through the employer's initial training program and an exam.

## What Are the Steps From Application to Training Offer?

American lays out the hiring journey in stages, and [moving forward depends on successfully meeting the requirements at each stage](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html):

- **Apply to Fly.** Watch the [Before You Board video, submit your application through American's careers site and answer its eligibility requirements, and complete the assessment](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).
- **Meet Me.** [Record a short introduction video and answer three situational questions](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). You have [72 hours to complete it](https://flightattendants.aa.com/).
- **Crew Interview.** [Participate in a live virtual 2-on-1 interview with American's recruiting team](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).
- **In-Person Experience.** Travel to Dallas-Fort Worth to [complete a crew resource management assessment and a 2-on-1 interview with the hiring team](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). If you live outside the area, American will [provide flight arrangements to the In-Person Experience](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).
- **Training offer.** Accept the offer and finish pre-employment steps, [which includes a drug screening, background check, verification of two years of employment history and fingerprinting](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

The In-Person Experience has a dress code. [Professional business attire is required](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and appearance rules apply, such as [no more than one earring per earlobe and no ear gauges](https://flightattendants.aa.com/). Bring [a valid passport (through Dec. 31, 2027) and an additional form of identification, such as a driver's license, Social Security card or birth certificate](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). Plan carefully, because candidates whose application is denied or withdrawn [must wait one year from the date of their last communication before reapplying and being considered for this position again](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

## What Is Training Like, and Why Does It Matter That It Is Unpaid?

Training runs [approximately 7 weeks](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html) at the [Robert L. Crandall Campus in Fort Worth, Texas](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and is [typically held during the first and second quarters of the year, with classes beginning in January and generally concluding in May or June](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). It is [a full-time commitment](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), held [five to six days a week and includes weekends and, occasionally, holidays](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

> Training is unpaid, but American provides lodging, three meals a day and access to amenities including a fitness center, pool, trails and bike paths, according to [American's flight attendant careers page](https://flightattendants.aa.com/).

Because trainees are not paid, living costs during those weeks matter. American will [cover your hotel stay, transportation to and from the training center and provide three meals per day throughout training](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [you'll have your own room throughout training](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). It does not cover everything. American [does not cover the cost of your new hire uniform and luggage](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and the initial set is [automatically deducted from your paycheck in installments](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). [Attendance is required for all days of training](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [missing a required session, outside of a medical or emergency situation, may result in withdrawal from the program](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

After graduation, a [new hire flight attendant loan](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), available once you join the airline's credit union, lets flight attendants [borrow up to $2,500 for qualifying expenses including relocation, living costs or other personal financial needs](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

## Where Will New Hires Be Based?

American assigns flight attendants to [one of 10 crew bases at airports in the continental U.S.](https://airlinegeeks.com/2026/10/06/american-opens-flight-attendant-applications-for-2027/), covering Boston, Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York-LaGuardia, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Reagan National. New hires should know that [LAX and PHX are not typically available for initial assignments](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

Your preferences are [considered but cannot be guaranteed](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). [Your base is assigned during the third week of training](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [base assignments are determined based on class seniority, availability and operational needs](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). After graduation, you [report to base within 5 days](https://flightattendants.aa.com/), and [relocation costs are not covered](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

Transfers are possible, [awarded based on seniority and staffing needs](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html) and [processed monthly, based on availability](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). New hires [may request a one-time base transfer during their six-month probation period](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [the company does not cover relocation expenses associated with base transfers](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). For language-qualified hires, [base selection will be restricted to locations where there is an operational necessity for speakers of that language](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), with [a one-year requirement at the base to which you are assigned during training](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). American is looking for speakers of [Mandarin, Dutch, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Spanish, Czech, French, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Japanese, or Portuguese](https://airlinegeeks.com/2026/10/06/american-opens-flight-attendant-applications-for-2027/), though fluency in more than one language is not required.

## What Is Life on Reserve Like in the First Two Years?

[Most new flight attendants spend their first 2+ years on reserve, which means being available for assignments on short notice](https://flightattendants.aa.com/). A typical path is [straight reserve for the first two years](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), then alternating months between reserve and holding a line in [years 3 to 5](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and [all timelines are subject to your base and operational needs](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

The rules are strict. A [Reserve Availability Period (RAP)](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html) [is a 12-hour on-call period, and you may be scheduled for up to six consecutive days](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and you [must be able to report within two hours to your base airport](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), or three hours at co-terminal bases. Missing that window carries real risk, since you [may be terminated based on a single instance of not reporting to work](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). You get [12 scheduled days off per month](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

Commuting from another city is allowed but discouraged. [Commuting is permitted, but it is strongly discouraged for new hires and those on reserve](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). Graduation is followed by [a six-month probation period](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and as your seniority grows you get [more opportunities to customize your schedule](https://flightattendants.aa.com/).

## What Does the Wider Flight Attendant Job Market Look Like?

[The median annual wage for flight attendants was $63,580 in May 2025](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/flight-attendants.htm), and [the lowest 10 percent earned less than $35,110](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/flight-attendants.htm), and our [flight attendant salary guide](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/flight-attendant-salary) compares pay airline by airline.

[Employment of flight attendants is projected to grow 9 percent from 2025 to 2035](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/flight-attendants.htm), and [about 18,500 openings for flight attendants are projected each year, on average, over the decade](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/flight-attendants.htm). Many of those openings are [expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/flight-attendants.htm).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

The window is short. Applications [opened on October 5](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/) and run only [through mid-October](https://www.biztoday.news/2026/10/06/american-airlines-launches-2027-flight-attendant-applications-enhanced-interview-experience/), so if you are interested, do not leave the application late. Expect slow replies, since [it may take some time to receive an update](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html) because of high interest in the trainee role.

Budget for the gap. Training is [unpaid](https://flightattendants.aa.com/), the [first paycheck is typically issued 2 to 3 weeks after graduation](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and the first uniform set is [automatically deducted from your paycheck in installments](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html). American's estimate of [$34,119 for a new flight attendant, based on the guaranteed minimum of 75 flight hours per month](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), excludes per diem, premium pay and other incentives, and [calling out sick or missing an assignment may reduce your guarantee](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html).

Be honest about reserve and relocation. Base preferences [cannot be guaranteed](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html), and Bobbi Wells has stressed that [the career can be difficult at times and is not suited to everyone](https://aviationa2z.com/index.php/2026/10/06/american-airlines-opens-2027-flight-attendant-hiring/). A few practical steps:

- **Check your passport now.** It [must be valid through at least December 31, 2027](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html) to interview.
- **Prepare for the video.** The Meet Me step asks you to [answer three situational questions](https://flightattendants.aa.com/faq.html) [designed to help American learn more about how you think, communicate and care for others](https://flightattendants.aa.com/), and you have [72 hours to complete it](https://flightattendants.aa.com/), so practise answers, using the sample questions in [our flight attendant interview tips](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/flight-attendant-interview-tips).
- **Read the hiring total with care.** The [figure of nearly 2,000 flight attendants for 2027](https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/american-airlines-hiring-nearly-2k-110116469.html) appears in media coverage, not on American's careers pages, so do not treat it as a guide to your odds.
- **Look at language pay.** Speaking more than one language [can create additional opportunities throughout your career to earn more and fly unique destinations](https://flightattendants.aa.com/), after a [proficiency assessment](https://flightattendants.aa.com/).
