# Apple Store Workers in Italy Strike on iPhone Day for Permanent Jobs as Temp Cover Nears Seven Months

About 1,600 Apple store staff in 17 Italian stores were called out on iPhone 18 Pro day. What they want, what their contract says, and what it means for jobs.

Store staff at [Apple Retail Italia](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-italia-sciopero) stopped work for a full shift on 18 September, the day the new iPhone went on sale, and the first number to get right is who the strike covered. More than [1,600 employees in 17 Apple stores](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/09/18/italian-apple-store-employees-strike-on-iphone18-pro-launch-day) were concerned by the strike, which is the whole Italian store workforce, not a headcount of people on the picket line. The organisers themselves put average participation at [70%](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-it-sciopero). The dispute is unusual because it is about hiring. Workers are asking Apple to add staff, convert temporary contracts to permanent ones and let part-timers work more hours. At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) we read a strike like this against the unions' own notices and the contract rules behind them, because that is where the useful detail for anyone working in, or applying to, a big retail floor actually sits.

## Who Actually Walked Out, and How Many?

The headline figure is a coverage number. The three unions called the strike across Apple Retail Italia, which has [17 stores and 1,600 workers](https://en.ilsole24ore.com/art/apple-launches-a-new-smartphone-and-italian-workers-go-on-strike-AJJPuY9), including the flagships on Piazza Liberty in Milan and Via del Corso in Rome. Every one of those employees was entitled to stop work, which is different from all of them doing so.

The participation figure comes from the organisers. The [Fisascat CISL turnout notice](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-it-sciopero) gives an average adherence of 70% across the day and counts about one hundred staff from the Rome stores at the authorised rally in Piazza Capranica, a short walk from the Via del Corso store. Apple's statement on the day gave no turnout figure of its own, and a union estimate of turnout should be read as exactly that.

On the ground, the scenes were visible but not a shutdown. In central Milan, [dozens of workers](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/09/18/italian-apple-store-employees-strike-on-iphone18-pro-launch-day) gathered outside the glass cube flagship with whistles and red flags while customers queued to go in. In Turin, the picket was set for [9 in the morning](https://www.torinotoday.it/attualita/sciopero-lavoratori-apple-lancio-iphone-18-settembre-2026.html) outside the Apple Store on Via Roma. Apple's line was that its [retail and online stores were open](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/09/18/italian-apple-store-employees-strike-on-iphone18-pro-launch-day) and welcoming customers as usual.

## What Are the Workers Asking Apple For?

Three things, and none of them is a pay rise. The joint platform is identical on each union's own site, which is worth checking because wire copy tends to compress it.

The [Filcams CGIL strike notice](https://www.filcams.cgil.it/article/homepage/con_il_nuovo_iphone_arriva_anche_lo_sciopero_dei_lavoratori_degli_store_apple) lists a shared hiring plan, the stabilisation of a share of fixed-term staff, and a voluntary increase in part-time hours, each tailored to individual stores and tied to firm deadlines. In the English translation carried by [Il Sole 24 Ore](https://en.ilsole24ore.com/art/apple-launches-a-new-smartphone-and-italian-workers-go-on-strike-AJJPuY9), that reads as "a jointly agreed recruitment plan, the conversion of a proportion of fixed-term contracts to permanent ones, and a voluntary increase in part-time hours".

Two details in that wording matter for workers. The first is a share, not all, so the unions are not asking Apple to make every temporary worker permanent. The second is voluntary, so no part-timer would be pushed into longer shifts. Both make the demand easier for a company to meet than the headlines suggest.

The unions also want the job itself defined. The [Uiltucs notice](https://uiltucs.it/apple-retail-italia-sciopero-nazionale-il-18-settembre/) points to growing overlap between roles and job descriptions that leave wide discretion to the company, along with how the in store experience sessions are run. Job descriptions are becoming [increasingly confusing](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/09/18/italian-apple-store-employees-strike-on-iphone18-pro-launch-day) and geared toward customer care, which, read alongside the complaint about overlapping roles, points to staff being stretched across several jobs at once.

> Temporary cover at Apple's Italian stores now runs close to [seven months](https://uiltucs.it/apple-retail-italia-sciopero-nazionale-il-18-settembre/), which the unions read as a structural shortage rather than a seasonal peak.

## Why Did Apple's Offer of More Temporary Hiring Fall Short?

This is the heart of the dispute, and it is set out in the unions' own account of the last meeting. On [29 July](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-italia-sciopero), the company declined the three proposals and offered only an increase in fixed-term hires and an earlier start for them. The [Il Post explainer](https://www.ilpost.it/2026/09/11/apple-italia-sciopero/) published a week before the strike summed up Apple's position the same way, as more hiring on fixed-term contracts and nothing more.

The unions' objection is about time. Fixed-term cover at the stores now stretches to [nearly seven months](https://www.filcams.cgil.it/article/homepage/con_il_nuovo_iphone_arriva_anche_lo_sciopero_dei_lavoratori_degli_store_apple), which in their reading shows a structural need for staff rather than a peak. The [Uiltucs statement](https://uiltucs.it/apple-retail-italia-sciopero-nazionale-il-18-settembre/) spells out the logic, arguing that cover of that length is no longer about busy periods alone but about a standing shortage in the headcount.

Seen from the shop floor, the difference is concrete. A temporary contract ends on a date, so the worker cannot plan rent or study around it, and the store loses the training it invested once the contract lapses. Apple's offer gets more hands in the building for the launch season, but it does nothing for the people who keep coming back on short contracts.

It also helps to know how long this has been building. The unions opened a formal [state of agitation in June](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-italia-sciopero), then held simultaneous staff assemblies in every Italian store on 7 September, and the strike date was set at the end of those meetings.

## What Did Staff Already Win Before the Strike?

The negotiations were not empty, and leaving this out would misrepresent the dispute. From August the value of the daily meal voucher went up to [10 euro](https://uiltucs.it/apple-retail-italia-sciopero-nazionale-il-18-settembre/), which both the Fisascat CISL and Uiltucs notices describe as a real step forward that still does not touch staffing.

That voucher has a history worth knowing. In early 2024 it stood at [9 euro](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple_retail_italia), and Apple at the time refused an increase on the grounds that its voucher already sat in the middle to upper range among competitors. In the same round, Apple Retail Italia proposed a results bonus of [400 euro gross](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple_retail_italia) a year per employee in exchange for dropping a fitness voucher of the same value, which about 32% of staff had used the year before.

The bigger win came in December 2024, when the unions and management signed a draft of the [company level contract for 2025 to 2028](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-italia-cia) covering more than 1,600 employees. Its terms are the best guide to what an Apple store job in Italy looks like on paper.

## What Does the Apple Store Contract in Italy Guarantee?

The company agreement reached in [December 2024](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-italia-cia) runs until 30 June 2028 and sets out several protections that a job seeker would never see in a posting.

- Rotas must be published at least [four weeks in advance](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-italia-cia), which gives staff real visibility of their shifts.
- Sunday and holiday work carries a higher pay premium than before, and holiday work is planned on a voluntary basis.
- Part-timers get a higher allowance for the elastic clause and a guaranteed minimum number of free Saturdays and Sundays each quarter.
- A joint committee on work related stress is to be set up to address pressure in the stores.

Read those against the strike demands and a pattern appears. The contract already regulates how hours move around, so the unions have turned to the next question, which is whether there are enough people to cover them. The agreement also commits the company to [reopen talks](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-italia-cia) if the unions table a new platform, which is the channel the current demands are now running through.

## What Do Italy's Commerce Contract Rules Say About Part-Time and Temporary Work?

Company agreements in Italian retail sit on top of the national contract for the commerce and services sector, and that is the contract Fisascat tags on its Apple strike notice. Its renewal was signed by the CGIL, CISL and UIL sector unions with [Confcommercio and Confesercenti](https://www.generazionevincente.it/ccnl-teziario/) and covers more than 3 million workers.

On part-time hours, the national fallback rules are specific, and company agreements can improve on them. Under [Article 95](https://www.contrattocommercio.it/art-95-clausole-flessibili-ed-elastiche/), an elastic clause that lets the employer move or extend a part-timer's hours needs the worker's written consent and at least two days of notice. Hours shifted under a flexible clause earn an extra premium, and lasting increases in vertical and mixed part-time contracts are capped at [30% of agreed annual hours](https://www.contrattocommercio.it/art-95-clausole-flessibili-ed-elastiche/) with a larger flat premium on top. The alternative annual allowance rose to at least [155 euro](https://www.contrattocommercio.it/art-95-clausole-flessibili-ed-elastiche/) from January 2025. A worker who refuses to sign an elastic clause cannot be dismissed or disciplined for it.

On temporary contracts, the national agreement follows Italian law, which requires a stated reason once a fixed-term relationship passes [12 months](https://www.generazionevincente.it/ccnl-teziario/) in total. Crucially for this dispute, the national text hands company level bargaining the job of agreeing [paths to stabilise fixed-term contracts](https://www.generazionevincente.it/ccnl-teziario/) and of checking whether available work allows part-timers' hours to go up.

That is the useful finding. The two demands that Apple rejected are not novel asks invented for a launch day protest. They are the exact items the sector's own contract tells companies and unions to negotiate at store chain level.

## Is Apple Hiring in Italy While the Strike Goes On?

Yes, and the listings are public. On the day of the strike, Apple's careers site showed two retail sales roles for Italy, [IT Specialist (Sales) and IT Expert](https://jobs.apple.com/en-us/search?location=italy-ITAC&team=vendite-APPST-ARSS), both posted on 18 September for various locations within Italy.

Both postings list [40 weekly hours](https://jobs.apple.com/en-us/search?location=italy-ITAC&team=vendite-APPST-ARSS), which is a full time schedule. The Specialist builds brand loyalty and sells, while the Expert is expected to know products across the Apple ecosystem and sell every service the company offers. Neither listing on the search page says whether the role is permanent or fixed-term, so that is the first question to ask at interview.

Apple's own framing of the job is about the package. A company spokesperson pointed to [industry-leading compensation and benefits](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/09/18/italian-apple-store-employees-strike-on-iphone18-pro-launch-day), including private medical, dental and vision cover and a mental health and wellness programme. For a wider view of the roles and how the hiring process runs, our [Apple careers guide](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/apple-careers-guide-2026-roles-pay-hiring-tips) walks through each store position.

> Filcams CGIL representative Nicholas Pezze put the timing plainly, "For Apple as a company, image is very important" on the day of the [iPhone launch](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/09/18/italian-apple-store-employees-strike-on-iphone18-pro-launch-day).

## Why Did the Unions Pick Launch Day?

Because launch day is when staff are hardest to replace. The new model went on sale worldwide that Friday at a starting Italian price of [€1,489](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/09/18/italian-apple-store-employees-strike-on-iphone18-pro-launch-day), and Apple's first foldable phone, the Duo, is due in stores on October 23, which means another heavy trading day is already in the diary.

The unions tie the timing directly to workload. The [Fisascat CISL federation](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-italia-sciopero) warns that each launch intensifies activity in the stores and that the company should staff for it rather than push the extra pressure onto existing workers. The Rome branches of the three unions framed it as Apple pushing staff into a [race for productivity](https://www.cisl.it/apple-retail-italia-sciopero-nazionale/) without fixing the shortage underneath.

The tactic of a national strike aimed at reopening talks is a familiar one in Italy, and our piece on the [Electrolux strike over a plant closure](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/electrolux-italy-strike-job-cuts-plant-closure) shows how it played out at a factory rather than a shop floor.

## What Happens Next in the Apple Italy Dispute?

The door is open on both sides, at least formally. The unions say they remain available for talks, and further hours of strike action can be called [at local level](https://www.fisascat.it/news/apple-retail-italia-sciopero) store by store.

That local option matters. The contract gives each store its own tier of union relations, so pressure can now move from a national one day stoppage to targeted action around specific launch weekends. Anyone starting a fixed-term contract at an Italian Apple store this autumn should expect the staffing question to stay live.

For a US comparison, our piece on the [Towson store closure](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/apple-towson-union-store-closure-retail-worker-rights-2026) sets out a rights playbook for retail staff. The Italian situation is different because the unions here already negotiate a signed company contract, which gives them a formal channel that store staff elsewhere often lack.

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

If the unions are right, Apple's Italian stores need more people than they employ on permanent terms. That is good news for applicants and a warning at the same time. The work exists, but the first contract you are offered may well be temporary.

Our take is that the most valuable thing an applicant can do is ask about the contract type before anything else. Ask whether the role is fixed-term, how long temporary cover has typically lasted at that store, and how many fixed-term staff moved to permanent contracts last year. If the answers are vague, weigh the offer as a seasonal job, however polished the brand.

If you are offered part-time hours, read the elastic clause carefully. You have to consent in writing, you are owed notice and a premium when hours move, and you cannot be dismissed for refusing it. Ask whether there is a route to more hours, because that is precisely what the unions are fighting to make voluntary and predictable.

Finally, treat the company contract as part of the pay. Four weeks of rota notice, guaranteed free weekends for part-timers and a higher Sunday premium are worth real money in retail, and they exist here because workers negotiated them. A store job with those protections is a better first rung than a higher hourly rate with none.
