Japan's [Asahi Mutual Life Insurance plans to hire around 100 sales staff in January 2027](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), the month it expects to begin operations in Vietnam through a newly established company, and it then aims to grow that workforce toward [1,000 employees, including sales managers and field staff](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp). President Kenichiro Ishijima detailed the plans in a [Nikkei Asia article dated September 30, 2026](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/insurance/japan-s-asahi-life-aims-to-hire-1-000-vietnam-staff-with-acquisition). The larger figure is a [goal](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), not a list of open jobs, and the first wave is planned [alongside a deal that is still subject to approval by Vietnamese regulators](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp). ## What Did Asahi Life Announce About Jobs in Vietnam?

Asahi Life [plans to employ a sales team of around 1,000 in Vietnam](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/insurance/japan-s-asahi-life-aims-to-hire-1-000-vietnam-staff-with-acquisition) as the insurer begins aggressive investment on the back of an improving balance sheet. The hiring is set to happen [alongside the completion of Asahi Mutual Life Insurance's acquisition of Vietnam's MVI Life](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), a deal unveiled in December 2025.

The first step is [around 100 sales staff in January 2027](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), when Asahi expects to begin operations through the newly established company. The second step is a gradual build of the workforce, including sales managers and field staff, with the [ultimate goal of reaching 1,000 employees](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp).

No date is attached to that goal in the [published plan](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), and no pay figures or office locations for the new roles are given there either. Read it as a hiring path that starts small and grows, not as open vacancies.

## When Does Hiring Start, and What Has to Happen First?

Asahi Life agreed to buy all issued shares of MVI Life Co. Ltd. from its parent, The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company, at a price of [approximately 170 million USD](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf). Asahi's release dated 1 December 2025 expected completion [upon obtaining approvals from regulatory authorities in Japan and Vietnam](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf).

When the hiring plan was published, the deal was still [subject to approval by Vietnamese regulators](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp).

So the timeline to plan around looks like this:

- **Signing.** In December 2025, Asahi signed the [agreement to acquire MVI Life](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf), its first purchase of an overseas insurance company.
- **Plan detailed.** In September 2026, the president detailed the [plan for a sales team of around 1,000](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/insurance/japan-s-asahi-life-aims-to-hire-1-000-vietnam-staff-with-acquisition).
- **First wave.** January 2027 is the target month for [around 100 sales hires](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp) and the start of operations through the new company.
- **After that.** Asahi then plans a gradual expansion with the [ultimate goal of reaching 1,000 employees](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), with no end date published.

## What Is MVI Life, the Company Asahi Is Buying?

MVI Life is a Vietnamese life insurer located in [Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf), established in 2011. It was formerly known as [Aviva Vietnam and was acquired by Manulife in 2021](https://vietnamnews.vn/economy/1730805/manulife-reaches-agreement-to-sell-mvi-life-in-vn-to-asahi-life.html), and up to the December 2025 deal it had operated independently as a separate life insurance entity, fully distinct from Manulife Vietnam.

MVI Life generated insurance premiums of [approximately US$93 million in 2024](https://vietnamnews.vn/economy/1730805/manulife-reaches-agreement-to-sell-mvi-life-in-vn-to-asahi-life.html) and had net assets of approximately $134 million as of the end of 2024. Its total assets were [JPY 94.4 billion (USD 609 million, FY2024)](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf).

The first hires are timed for [January 2027, when Asahi expects to begin operations through the newly established company](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp).

## What Kinds of Sales Roles Are Planned?

Asahi will develop a [two-channel sales system combining bank branches and sales representatives](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), aiming for each channel to account for half of its annual new premium revenue.

The two channels named in the plan are:

- **Bank branch sales.** The [plan names bank branches](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp) as one of the two channels and does not name a bank.
- **Sales representatives.** The second channel named in the [plan](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp). At group level, Asahi already counts its [sales representative channel](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf) as a revenue pillar alongside its Nanairo Life agency business.

The expansion explicitly [includes sales managers and field staff](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), so the plan names management roles as well as field roles.

Asahi plans to offer [its own health insurance products in Vietnam](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp) once they receive regulatory approval and MVI Life's systems are upgraded. The company sees growth potential as Vietnam's expanding middle class becomes [increasingly health-conscious](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp). Under its December 2025 plan, post completion Asahi intends to combine its experience in [health, cancer, elderly care and critical illness products](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf) with technology from its partner LivWell.

## Has Asahi Life Worked in Vietnam Before?

Yes. Asahi partnered with major Vietnamese insurance companies and began consulting services in [2017, providing know-how on telemarketing and web sales](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf).

That work [grew into a local subsidiary](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf), Asahi Life Consulting Vietnam, set up in [Ho Chi Minh City in 2023](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf), launching an insurance agency business focused on face-to-face sales. In December 2025, Asahi described the MVI Life purchase as a step toward using the knowledge amassed over the [past eight years](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf) to commence overseas life insurance underwriting.

Asahi's technology consultant and health ecosystem partner, LivWell, is an insurtech company with its holding company in Singapore that [began operations in Vietnam in 2020](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf), providing insurance services and wellness platforms focused on healthcare. In December 2025 it had a capital partnership with California Fitness & Yoga and had acquired customers from that company, [300,000 members, including 60,000 active users](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf).

Founded in 1888, Asahi was one of Japan's top 10 life insurers in December 2025, serving over three million customers as a group with a team of [19,000 employees](https://vietnamnews.vn/economy/1730805/manulife-reaches-agreement-to-sell-mvi-life-in-vn-to-asahi-life.html).

## What Does Vietnamese Law Require of a Life Insurance Agent?

The hiring plan sets an [ultimate goal of reaching 1,000 employees](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), including sales managers and field staff, but it does not say whether the sales representatives will sell under agency contracts. For an individual who works as an insurance agent, the rules sit in Vietnam's [Law on Insurance Business](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html), which took effect on January 1, 2023, except for some clauses.

To conduct insurance agency activities, an individual must [fully meet the following conditions](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html):

- Being a [Vietnamese citizen permanently residing in Vietnam](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html).
- Having [full civil act capacity](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html).
- Possessing an [insurance agent's certificate](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html) as set out in the law.

Individuals under penal liability examination, serving a prison sentence or banned from insurance-related practice [may not conclude and perform insurance agency contracts](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html).

An individual may not [concurrently act as an insurance agent for another insurance enterprise](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html) operating in the same type of insurance, so a life agent cannot act for a second life insurer at the same time. Agents may only sell [the insurance products in which they have been trained](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html). A person who holds a certificate but does no agency work for [3 consecutive years must take a test for a new certificate](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html) before selling again.

Insurers must [provide training and update knowledge for insurance agents](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html) in accordance with law, and pay commission, bonus and support amounts as agreed in the agency contract, which [must not exceed the maximum levels specified by the Minister of Finance](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html). Each agency contract must state the [insurance agency commission, bonus and support, and other interests (if any)](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html), so ask to see those terms in writing before you sign.

## How Does the Insurance Agent Certificate Exam Work?

The Ministry of Finance's [Circular 69/2022/TT-BTC](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html) sets out the certificate rules and took effect from January 1, 2023. It lists six agent certificates, including these two:

- **Basic life insurance agent certificate.** Used for [life insurance products (except for unit-linked insurance products) and health insurance products](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html).
- **Unit-linked insurance agent certificate.** Used for [unit-linked insurance products](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html), with training that adds general knowledge of the financial market and basic knowledge of investment.

Each standard agent certificate test contains [40 questions, and the test duration is 60 minutes](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html), and candidates who answer [75% of the questions](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html) correctly or more pass. Someone who already holds the basic life certificate and adds the unit-linked one sits a shorter test of [20 questions over 40 minutes](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html). Certificates issued before January 1, 2023 [could be used only until December 31, 2025](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html), and until conversion an older certificate issued by a life insurance training institution counted as [equivalent to the basic life insurance agent certificate](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html) under the circular's conversion rules.

Training covers [general knowledge about insurance and the principles of insurance operations for each certificate type, the code of professional ethics and conduct of insurance agents, the rights and obligations of insurers and agents, Vietnam's law on insurance business activities corresponding to the type of insurance, and insurance agent skills and practice](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html).

For exams at the concentrated venues and at venues insurers register themselves, insurance enterprises file the next month's exam plan with the Insurance Supervisory Authority [before the 25 of every month](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html), some venues use a [quarterly plan](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html), and insurers [must pay exam fees for candidates](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/circular-no-69-2022-tt-btc-detailing-regulations-on-insurance-certificates-insurance-agent-certif-237026-doc1.html) on the registered list.

## Why Is Asahi Expanding Into Vietnam Now?

Asahi's medium-term plan, [Next A (FY2024 to 2026)](https://www.asahi-life.co.jp/english/news/E_20251201.pdf), aims at a business model that keeps growing beyond 2030, and overseas business is meant to become a future pillar of revenue next to its sales representative channel and its Nanairo Life agency business.

In the fiscal year ended March 2026, Asahi eliminated the negative spread between investment yields and guaranteed interest rates [for the first time since fiscal 2000](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp). It plans to invest around [100 billion yen (635 million USD) over the three fiscal years through March 2030](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), including in acquisitions in Japan and overseas.

Ishijima said the company would apply its experience in Japan to build new sales channels, [establishing long-term relationships with customers and providing comprehensive after-sales support](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp).

## What Happens to MVI Life's Current Staff and Customers?

Manulife and Asahi Life committed to [ensuring a smooth transition for MVI Life's customers, partners, and employees](https://vietnamnews.vn/economy/1730805/manulife-reaches-agreement-to-sell-mvi-life-in-vn-to-asahi-life.html), and all MVI Life policies will continue to be honored. Until closing, MVI Life is expected to [continue operating under its existing structure and licenses](https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/asia/news/life-insurance/manulife-sells-vietnams-mvi-life-unit-to-asahi-life-558439.aspx).

Steve Finch, President and CEO of Manulife Asia, said the company would [like to recognize and thank MVI Life's leadership team and its employees](https://vietnamnews.vn/economy/1730805/manulife-reaches-agreement-to-sell-mvi-life-in-vn-to-asahi-life.html) for their contributions over the years. No figures on MVI Life's staff after the handover appear in [the Viet Nam News article on the sale](https://vietnamnews.vn/economy/1730805/manulife-reaches-agreement-to-sell-mvi-life-in-vn-to-asahi-life.html).

Manulife stays in the market through Manulife Vietnam, which had [nearly 1,000 employees and over 50,000 agents](https://vietnamnews.vn/economy/1730805/manulife-reaches-agreement-to-sell-mvi-life-in-vn-to-asahi-life.html), more than 60 offices and an exclusive bancassurance partnership with VietinBank when the sale was agreed. That business was [established in 1999 as the first foreign-owned life insurance company licensed to operate in the market](https://vietnamnews.vn/economy/1730805/manulife-reaches-agreement-to-sell-mvi-life-in-vn-to-asahi-life.html), and it served [nearly 1.5 million customers nationwide](https://vietnamnews.vn/economy/1730805/manulife-reaches-agreement-to-sell-mvi-life-in-vn-to-asahi-life.html) when the sale was agreed.

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

For experienced insurance sellers this is worth tracking, but it is early. The first wave is [around 100 sales staff in January 2027](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp), and that start is tied to a deal that is [still subject to approval by Vietnamese regulators](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp). Treat it as a target to prepare for, not a job to count on.

If a role is an agency role, an agent certificate is required for [an individual conducting insurance agency activities](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html), and the [published plan](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp) does not say how its sales staff will be engaged. If you have sold through a bank branch or as a sales representative, those are the two channels in the plan. - **Check your current contract.** The law bars an individual from [concurrently acting as an insurance agent for another insurance enterprise](https://english.luatvietnam.vn/law-no-08-2022-qh15-of-the-national-assembly-on-insurance-business-224108-doc1.html) in the same type of insurance, so read your existing agency contract before you sign with a second life insurer.
- **Build health product knowledge.** Asahi plans to sell [its own health insurance products](https://en.vietnamplus.vn/asahi-mutual-life-insurance-aims-hire-1000-staff-in-vietnam-post352828.vnp) once they receive regulatory approval and MVI Life's systems are upgraded, so list any health insurance sales experience on your CV.
