### Atlassian's Robot Layoff Goes Viral (For Wrong Reasons)

Tech layoffs are nothing new. But Atlassian’s method for delivering the news has sparked global criticism—and possibly legal action.

Last week, the Australian software giant cut 150 customer support roles across six countries. The announcement? A pre-recorded video from co-[CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes](https://events.atlassian.com/worklife/speaker/518926/mike-cannon-brookes), followed by an email 15 minutes later confirming termination. Some employees reportedly lost access to their laptops while the video was still playing.

The video, lacking any live Q&A or immediate human interaction, quickly went viral—not for its empathy, but for its cold, detached delivery.

### When Video Meets Violation

While the layoffs impacted workers in several countries, the move raised particular alarm in the UK, where employment law requires that companies consult employee representatives before making 20 or more redundancies at a single site within a 90-day period.

According to employment lawyer [Alan Lewis of Constantine Law](https://www.constantinelaw.co.uk/about-alan-lewis#:~:text=With%20more%20than%20twenty%20years,approach%20and%20attention%20to%20detail.), Atlassian’s approach may have violated the statutory consultation process, which mandates 30 days of discussion for 20+ job cuts and 45 days for 100+.

There’s also concern over whether employees were given proper notice or the opportunity to respond—an essential part of UK labor law.

## "Not AI, Just Efficiency"

Atlassian insists that the decision wasn’t about AI replacement. Instead, they say product improvements reduced the need for human customer support.

Still, the company has been aggressively promoting its **AI capabilities** in recent months—including AI-powered contact forms, agentless service support, and AI-driven automation. Internally, many viewed the job cuts as a **cost-efficiency play aligned with AI adoption**—even if that wasn't the official messaging.

The timing didn’t help either. [Co-founder Scott Farquhar]([https://events.atlassian.com/team22/speaker/417212/scott-farquhar#:~:text=Scott Farquhar is the Co,globally%2C serving over 200%2C000 customers.)](https://events.atlassian.com/team22/speaker/417212/scott-farquhar#:~:text=Scott%20Farquhar%20is%20the%20Co,globally%2C%20serving%20over%20200%2C000%20customers.)) gave a public statement the same week urging workers to embrace AI and move beyond “jobs from the past.”

## The Human Cost of Automation

Beyond legal trouble, the incident highlights the growing **disconnect between corporate decision-makers and employees** navigating uncertain job futures.

Layoff decisions—especially in sensitive industries like customer service—require **dignity, clarity, and empathy**. According to employment experts, pre-recorded announcements don’t meet that standard. They leave workers confused, unsupported, and—in Atlassian’s case—scrambling to understand what just happened.

The company has offered **six months of severance**, outplacement services, and extended benefits. But for many affected workers, the **method** of communication was more damaging than the message itself.

As AI-driven restructuring becomes more common, companies will face increasing scrutiny over not just what decisions they make—but **how** they deliver them.
