## AT&T's Office Ultimatum

[AT&T](https://www.att.com/) CEO John Stankey has a message for his nearly **100,000 employees**: **show up to the office five days a week—or move on**.

In a bold internal memo circulated last week, Stankey responded to growing employee frustration over the telecom giant’s strict **return-to-office (RTO) mandate**. The policy, introduced earlier this year, makes **five days in-person** the new normal at AT&T.

## Not Just a Suggestion—A Requirement

According to an internal survey, **79% of AT&T’s workforce has signed on** to the new office expectations. But there’s a catch: commitment doesn’t mean enthusiasm. Employee engagement has dropped noticeably, with some teams citing a surge in complaints about **overcrowded parking lots, desk shortages, and lack of flexibility**.

Still, Stankey isn’t budging. He framed these changes as part of a broader company overhaul—from a “hierarchical, tenure-focused environment” to a **“market-based culture”** where performance and adaptability come first.

## A Culture Shift, Not a Negotiation

In his memo, Stankey offered this direct ultimatum:

> “If the requirements dictated by this dynamic do not align to your personal desires, you have every right to find a career opportunity that is suitable to your aspirations.”

That may be the most CEO-coded way of saying: **adapt or leave**.

He argues that in-person presence drives collaboration, accelerates problem-solving, and aligns better with the company’s evolving identity. Remote work might have worked during the pandemic, but AT&T’s future—according to its leadership—will be built in-office, not on Zoom.

## Why This Matters

Stankey’s hardline stance comes at a time when most Fortune 500 companies are **still navigating hybrid arrangements**. While [Amazon](https://www.aboutamazon.com/about-us), [Meta](https://www.meta.com/about/?srsltid=AfmBOorMIicB-zrLKLJ_B4P7eoAciy8UtJFvRSWx5uEF64hL3Xd2whZl), and [Google](https://about.google/) offer varying degrees of flexibility, AT&T stands out for going full-throttle on a five-day mandate.

This approach may appeal to shareholders or traditionalists—but it also risks **alienating top talent**, especially those who have come to value location flexibility and work-life balance.

Some employees have already pushed back, and others may choose to leave. But for AT&T, this isn't just about physical presence—it's about sending a clear message: **we're rebuilding, and this is what it looks like.**
