Barclays expects to have cut [around 5,000 staff by the end of 2026 after turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to make the bank more efficient](https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1022/1596386-barclays-quarterly-results/), equal to [about 5% of the bank’s employees](https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/money-and-banking/barclays-plans-5000-job-cuts-as-bank-steps-up-ai-led-efficiency/article71610597.ece), who numbered [about 93,000 people globally at the end of 2025](https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/money-and-banking/barclays-plans-5000-job-cuts-as-bank-steps-up-ai-led-efficiency/article71610597.ece). Around [60% of the cuts will impact support functions, including developers](https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-job-cuts-ai-push-layoffs-2026-10), and [1,000 of the job cuts have already been implemented, with another 4,000 to go before the end of the year](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates). In its third-quarter results, Barclays lists the cuts as [expected technology-enabled FTE reductions](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199). For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers who work at Barclays or in bank operations and tech, this guide covers which roles are named, what the bank has and has not said about location, what UK redundancy rules require, and where affected staff can look next.

## What Did Barclays Announce, and When?

The news came on [22 October 2026 with the bank’s results for the three months to 30 September](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199). The job figure came in the results presentation, [where the UK bank revealed higher profits of £2.3 billion for the July to September period](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates), and Anna Cross, the chief financial officer, [told journalists on a call](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates) how the cuts would run.

Barclays is [structurally reducing the cost base through expected technology-enabled FTE reductions, creating capacity for further investment in the business](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199). FTE stands for [Full-Time Equivalent](https://www.cityam.com/barclays-profit-misses-after-investment-bank-comes-up-short/).

The reduction would affect [about 5% of the bank’s employees](https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/money-and-banking/barclays-plans-5000-job-cuts-as-bank-steps-up-ai-led-efficiency/article71610597.ece), and the bank’s total headcount was [around 93,000 globally at the end of 2025](https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1022/1596386-barclays-quarterly-results/).

Timing matters for anyone wondering whether their role is still in play. [Some 1,000 of the roles were cut during the first half of 2026, and the remainder are spread out over the second half of the year](https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1022/1596386-barclays-quarterly-results/). The removal of [another 4,000 employees is expected to happen before the end of the year](https://www.techradar.com/pro/barclays-to-cut-5-000-jobs-while-handing-work-over-to-ai-chief-executive-says-ai-is-icing-on-the-cake).

## Which Roles Are Being Cut, and Are Developers Included?

Support work takes most of the hit, as [around 60% of the cuts will impact support functions, including developers](https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-job-cuts-ai-push-layoffs-2026-10), and the reductions are [expected to be mainly concentrated in support functions, including developers](https://www.cityam.com/barclays-profit-misses-after-investment-bank-comes-up-short/).

The wider description is operational and functional work. [The majority of the reductions relate to operational and functional roles across the bank](https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1022/1596386-barclays-quarterly-results/). Chief executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan put it this way, saying the cuts [are across the bank and they are primarily related to operational and functional roles that service our business](https://www.cityam.com/barclays-profit-misses-after-investment-bank-comes-up-short/).

Developers are named alongside AI. The adoption of AI to make [some work processes more efficient](https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1022/1596386-barclays-quarterly-results/) has meant [the bank can employ fewer roles such as developers](https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1022/1596386-barclays-quarterly-results/). Across industries, [coding has become one of the main business use cases for AI](https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-job-cuts-ai-push-layoffs-2026-10), causing some companies to cut back on developers.

Barclays [has yet to confirm where the losses will fall](https://www.personneltoday.com/hr/barclays-to-slash-5000-jobs-in-pivot-to-ai/), and the roles named so far are [support functions, including developers](https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-job-cuts-ai-push-layoffs-2026-10) and [operational and functional roles across the bank](https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1022/1596386-barclays-quarterly-results/). Staff in customer-facing branch roles, traders and relationship bankers should not assume they are safe or at risk from the headline alone.

## Where Will the Cuts Fall, and Which Countries Are Affected?

This is the open question. The bank [has yet to confirm where the losses will fall within its global operations](https://www.personneltoday.com/hr/barclays-to-slash-5000-jobs-in-pivot-to-ai/), so the split by country is not public.

What the results do show is where the cost-cutting money went this quarter. Of the [£201m of Q326 SCAs, £110m was in Barclays UK](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199). SCAs are [structural cost actions](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199), and [the bulk of the cost cutting came from the UK retail bank, but a proportion was also in its investment bank](https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1022/1596386-barclays-quarterly-results/).

Group finance director Anna Cross pointed to the same division. In her words, [nowhere in the bank is this more relevant than in Barclays UK, where we have taken more structural cost actions than planned](https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-job-cuts-ai-push-layoffs-2026-10) this year.

The bank has built [a state-of-the-art campus that can house thousands of staff next to the River Clyde in Glasgow](https://www.scotsman.com/business/scottish-job-fears-as-barclays-ai-push-sees-5000-jobs-slashed-9302957), where the move [will spark concerns](https://www.scotsman.com/business/scottish-job-fears-as-barclays-ai-push-sees-5000-jobs-slashed-9302957), according to The Scotsman.

Barclays operates [offices from the UK to the US, to India, Asia Pacific, and beyond](https://search.jobs.barclays/).

> We will employ the AI at scale, but AI is the icing on the cake, not the cake, Barclays chief executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan said, according to [the Personnel Today report](https://www.personneltoday.com/hr/barclays-to-slash-5000-jobs-in-pivot-to-ai/).

## How Big a Role Does AI Actually Play in These Cuts?

The chief executive called AI [the icing on the cake](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates). Barclays links the cuts to [organisational simplification and technology change efficiency driven by AI](https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-job-cuts-ai-push-layoffs-2026-10), with the stated aim of [structurally reducing costs to generate capacity for investment](https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/money-and-banking/barclays-plans-5000-job-cuts-as-bank-steps-up-ai-led-efficiency/article71610597.ece).

When reporters asked how many of the cuts were directly linked to AI, Venkatakrishnan pointed to [deep investments in technology and simplifying its processes](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates). He added that [AI has an important role to play and may have a more important role to play in the future](https://www.techradar.com/pro/barclays-to-cut-5-000-jobs-while-handing-work-over-to-ai-chief-executive-says-ai-is-icing-on-the-cake).

He also described the order of the work, saying [where the infrastructure is modern, we’ve been applying AI](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates). Cross said [AI makes our people more productive](https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-job-cuts-ai-push-layoffs-2026-10).

## What Do the Results Say About Cost Cutting Into Next Year?

Barclays booked [structural cost actions (SCAs) of £201m (Q325: £93m), with a further c.£300m planned in Q426](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199), and expects [Group total costs of c.£18.5 billion in FY26 and c.£18.4 billion in FY27](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199).

The job cuts are [part of plans to save more than £1.1 billion in 2027](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates). The bank has also set [a target of over £2bn in total cost efficiency savings across the 2026 to 2028 period](https://www.cityam.com/barclays-profit-misses-after-investment-bank-comes-up-short/).

Profit before tax [grew by 12% to £2.3 billion](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199) in the quarter, the bank announced [a new £500m share buyback tranche](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199), and its cost to income ratio [improved to 62% from 63%](https://www.investegate.co.uk/announcement/rns/barclays--barc/3rd-quarter-results/9835199).

The profit narrowly missed [internal consensus of a £2.4 billion haul](https://www.cityam.com/barclays-profit-misses-after-investment-bank-comes-up-short/), and Barclays is coming towards [the end of a three-year strategy to boost performance, which has involved major cost-cutting and ramping up technology capabilities](https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1022/1596386-barclays-quarterly-results/).

## Has Barclays Made Cuts on This Scale Before?

Yes. In January 2024 the bank confirmed it had [axed around 5,000 jobs globally over 2023 in a bid to streamline the business and reduce costs](https://www.fintechfutures.com/job-cuts-new-hires/barclays-bid-to-cut-costs-saw-5-000-jobs-axed-in-2023). Those cuts were mostly in [Barclays’ support function, Barclays Execution Services ‘BX’, and the Barclays UK Chief Operating Officer function](https://www.fintechfutures.com/job-cuts-new-hires/barclays-bid-to-cut-costs-saw-5-000-jobs-axed-in-2023).

The reason given then was that [management layers are reduced and the Group improves its technology and automation capabilities](https://www.fintechfutures.com/job-cuts-new-hires/barclays-bid-to-cut-costs-saw-5-000-jobs-axed-in-2023). The new round names AI directly, and support functions make up [around 60% of the cuts](https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-job-cuts-ai-push-layoffs-2026-10) this time.

At that time the bank was [supporting impacted colleagues with training, advice, and outplacement services](https://www.fintechfutures.com/job-cuts-new-hires/barclays-bid-to-cut-costs-saw-5-000-jobs-axed-in-2023). Staff in this round can ask whether the same support applies and how to [get outplacement into a severance package](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/what-is-outplacement-severance-package-negotiate-2026).

Months earlier, Standard Chartered announced plans to [cut more than 7,000 jobs over the next four years as it ramped up the use of AI](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates), which means [slashing around 15% of its back-office roles by 2030](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates).

## What Are UK Barclays Employees Entitled To if Their Role Goes?

The rules below come from [GOV.UK](https://www.gov.uk/redundant-your-rights) and [Acas](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy) guidance.

An employer must follow [collective consultation rules](https://www.gov.uk/staff-redundant/redundancy-consultations) when it makes 20 or more employees redundant within any 90-day period at a single establishment. For [100 or more proposed redundancies, the minimum consultation period before dismissal is 45 days](https://www.gov.uk/staff-redundant/redundancy-consultations), and the employer must notify the Redundancy Payments Service by submitting [form HR1 online, 45 days before the first redundancy](https://www.gov.uk/staff-redundant/redundancy-consultations) when 100 or more are proposed.

The employer must give representatives or staff written details of [the reasons for redundancies, the numbers and categories of employees involved](https://www.gov.uk/staff-redundant/redundancy-consultations), the numbers in each category, how people will be selected, how the redundancies will be carried out and how redundancy payments will be worked out. Your employer should explain [which roles are at risk of redundancy](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy), why, how many and what happens next, and if you are at risk it should confirm the consultation plan and your other options, which [should be in writing, for example in a letter or email](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy).

You [cannot be selected because of age, gender, or if you’re disabled or pregnant](https://www.gov.uk/redundant-your-rights), and you might be eligible for [redundancy pay, a notice period, a consultation with your employer](https://www.gov.uk/redundant-your-rights), the option to move into a different job and time off to find a new job.

You have the right to statutory redundancy pay if you are selected for redundancy, [have continuously worked for your employer for 2 years or more](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay) and have the legal status of employee. For staff [aged 21 or under](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay), the minimum is [half a week's pay for each full year you've worked](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay). For staff [aged 22 to 40](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay), it is [1 week’s pay for each full year you worked from age 22](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay) and [half a week’s pay for each full year you worked before that](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay). For staff [aged 41 or over](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay), it is [1.5 week's pay for each full year you worked from age 41](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay), [1 week's pay for each full year you worked when you were between 22 and 40](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay) and [half a week's pay for each year you worked when you were 21 or under](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay). The weekly amount is [capped at £751](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay), pay counts for [up to 20 years of work](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay), employers can top this up as [enhanced or contractual redundancy pay](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay), and [up to £30,000 of redundancy pay is tax free](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay).

If there is a suitable alternative vacancy, [your employer must offer it to you or someone else who is being made redundant](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/taking-another-job-with-your-employer), and you have [the right to a 4-week trial period in an alternative role](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/taking-another-job-with-your-employer). If you are an employee who has [continuously worked for your employer for 2 years or more, including the notice period](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/finding-a-job-with-a-new-employer), your employer [must allow you a reasonable amount of time off to look and apply for another job](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/finding-a-job-with-a-new-employer), requested during your notice period, and pay for that time [is limited to 40% of a week’s pay](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/finding-a-job-with-a-new-employer).

Some staff may prefer to leave. If your role is at risk, you can [put yourself forward for redundancy before being selected](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/voluntary-redundancy), but [your employer does not have to agree to make you redundant](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/voluntary-redundancy).

## What Has Barclays Told Staff, and Where Do Unions Stand?

The bank’s message is about skills. A Barclays spokesperson said the bank is [committed to helping our colleagues develop and build rewarding careers](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates), and is [building the workforce and skills needed to deliver our strategy](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates).

The [Unite union, which represents about 36,000 Barclays staff](https://www.personneltoday.com/hr/barclays-to-slash-5000-jobs-in-pivot-to-ai/), has already called on the bank to reverse a separate plan for staff who had been coming in two days a week to attend [at least three days a week from October](https://www.personneltoday.com/hr/barclays-to-slash-5000-jobs-in-pivot-to-ai/). Barclays workers have also [drawn a line on office days](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/barclays-return-to-office-pushback), and at NatWest [Unite condemned a plan moving remote-first workers to two office days a week](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/natwest-30000-staff-more-office-days-union-pushback).

The [TUC urged the chancellor to increase taxes on banks](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates) at the [28 October budget](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates), citing Barclays’ profits. Staff who are union members should ask their representative how consultation will run.

> We are positioning Barclays for the future, building the workforce and skills needed to deliver our strategy and meet the evolving needs of our customers and clients, a Barclays spokesperson said, according to [the Guardian business live coverage](https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2026/oct/22/barclays-profits-jump-looming-bank-tax-french-bond-yields-hit-fresh-24-year-high-latest-live-updates).

## Where Can Affected Barclays Staff Look Next?

Start inside the bank. Job categories on [Barclays’ current careers search](https://search.jobs.barclays/) include Banking Operations, Data & Analytics, Development and Engineering, Technology, Risk and Quantitative Analytics, and Change, so check open Barclays roles before your role ends, since a suitable alternative job [should be offered before your current role ends](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/taking-another-job-with-your-employer).

Government services can help outside it. In England the [Jobcentre Plus Rapid Response Service](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/finding-a-job-with-a-new-employer) can help you find work, update your CV and get training. In Scotland, [Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE)](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/finding-a-job-with-a-new-employer) offers free advice from career experts, and in Wales the [ReAct+ programme](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/finding-a-job-with-a-new-employer) supports people back into work.

## What This Means for Bank Workers, and What Should You Do Next?

About [60% of the cuts](https://www.businessinsider.com/barclays-job-cuts-ai-push-layoffs-2026-10) fall on support functions. Barclays [has yet to confirm where the losses will fall](https://www.personneltoday.com/hr/barclays-to-slash-5000-jobs-in-pivot-to-ai/), so prepare as if your team is in scope.

- **Get the facts in writing.** Ask whether your role is [at risk of redundancy](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy), how selection will work and how your payment will be calculated, since in collective consultation the employer must give representatives or staff [written details](https://www.gov.uk/staff-redundant/redundancy-consultations) of these.
- **Work out your numbers.** Check your service and age against the [statutory redundancy pay rules](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/redundancy-pay), and ask whether an enhanced scheme applies.
- **Move toward the work AI touches, not away from it.** AI [may have a more important role to play in the future](https://www.techradar.com/pro/barclays-to-cut-5-000-jobs-while-handing-work-over-to-ai-chief-executive-says-ai-is-icing-on-the-cake), the chief executive said, so learn the AI tools your own team is adopting.
- **Search Barclays jobs early.** Use the [Barclays careers search](https://search.jobs.barclays/) and filter by Technology or Data & Analytics, and remember the [4-week trial period](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/taking-another-job-with-your-employer) in any alternative role.
- **Use the paid time off.** If you have [continuously worked for your employer for 2 years or more, including the notice period](https://www.acas.org.uk/your-rights-during-redundancy/finding-a-job-with-a-new-employer), and have the legal status of employee, request time off to look and apply for another job during your notice period.
