[BrewDog](https://www.brewdog.com/), the Scottish craft beer company once valued at over £1.8 billion, has collapsed into administration after five consecutive years of financial losses. US-Canadian beverage and cannabis firm [Tilray Brands](https://www.tilray.com/) has acquired the brand, its brewery and 11 pubs for £33 million — a fraction of what investors and employees believed the company was worth. The deal saves 733 jobs but leaves 484 workers redundant and 38 bars permanently closed. For hundreds of hospitality workers across the UK and Ireland, the fallout is immediate and devastating.

## What Happened to BrewDog?

BrewDog entered formal administration in early March 2026 after years of mounting financial pressure. The company posted a pre-tax loss of £36.6 million in 2024 — its fifth straight year in the red — bringing cumulative losses to approximately £148 million. Revenue stagnated at £357 million, barely 1% above 2023 figures.

The company had already been showing signs of severe strain. In July 2025, BrewDog closed 10 bars, including its Aberdeen flagship location. Co-founder Martin Dickie departed the business, following fellow co-founder James Watt, who had stepped down from day-to-day operations as CEO the year prior. Despite a £20 million emergency loan from its largest shareholder, TSG Consumer Partners, the brewer's annual interest payments had ballooned to £17.3 million, making the debt burden unsustainable.

Restructuring consultancy [AlixPartners](https://www.alixpartners.com/) was brought in to explore options, ultimately overseeing the administration process that led to the Tilray deal.

## How Were Workers Told About the Layoffs?

The manner in which BrewDog's redundancies were communicated has drawn widespread condemnation. According to reports from [HR Grapevine](https://www.hrgrapevine.com/content/article/2026-03-04-axed-brewdog-employees-learn-their-fate-on-15-minute-teams-call-as-484-jobs-lost) and [STV News](https://news.stv.tv/scotland/brewdog-made-me-and-hundreds-of-staff-redundant-on-15-minute-teams-call), 484 employees learned their jobs were gone during a 15-minute Microsoft Teams call led by BrewDog CEO James Taylor.

Staff were given just 25 minutes' notice before the call. The session was conducted off-camera, and workers were not permitted to ask questions. One former employee told STV News: "BrewDog made me and hundreds of staff redundant on a 15-minute Teams call."

Bryan Simpson, hospitality organiser with the Unite union, described the process as "the worst mass redundancy I have dealt with, including during the pandemic." The criticism highlights how corporate communication during layoffs can compound the damage to affected workers — stripping them not only of their livelihoods but of their dignity in the process.

## What Does the Tilray Deal Include?

Under the terms of the acquisition, [Tilray Brands](https://www.tilray.com/) — a company primarily known for medicinal cannabis and craft beverages in North America — will acquire:

- BrewDog's brand portfolio and intellectual property
- The Ellon brewery in Aberdeenshire, Scotland
- 11 strategic brewpubs in the UK and Ireland, including the flagship Waterloo location in London
- 733 employees who will transfer to Tilray

The 38 bars not included in the deal will close immediately. Tilray has also indicated it expects to complete a separate acquisition of BrewDog's US and Australian operations within 30 days.

For Tilray, the deal represents a significant expansion of its global beverage alcohol portfolio. For BrewDog workers, it means two very different outcomes depending on which side of the 733/484 divide they fall.

## What Happens to BrewDog's 220,000 Crowdfund Investors?

Perhaps the most painful dimension of BrewDog's collapse is the complete wipeout of its crowdfunding investors. The company's Equity for Punks scheme, launched in 2009, attracted approximately 220,000 individual investors who collectively poured around £75 million into the company. Shares typically cost £20 to £30 each, with most investors spending about £500.

Under the administration process, these equity holders will receive nothing. The reason lies in BrewDog's capital structure: when TSG Consumer Partners acquired a 22% stake in 2017, it secured "preference shares" that gave TSG priority repayment in any sale event. With the sale price at just £33 million — far below the company's debts — ordinary shareholders, including every Equity for Punks investor, are left empty-handed.

James Watt, who stepped down from operational leadership but retained a significant stake, called the outcome "incredibly hard" and said he was "heartbroken for the equity punks." He acknowledged "many mistakes" and said: "I would have loved to have saved every job and every equity punk investment. Ultimately, I couldn't. That will stay with me."

## What Does This Mean for the Hospitality Job Market?

BrewDog's collapse is not an isolated incident. The UK hospitality sector has been under sustained pressure from rising energy costs, shifting consumer spending habits, post-pandemic recovery challenges and increasing competition from at-home consumption. The loss of 484 jobs and 38 venues adds to an already difficult employment landscape for hospitality workers.

*As*[*Metaintro*](https://www.metaintro.com)*CEO Lacey Kaelani told*[*Food Institute*](https://foodinstitute.com/focus/heineken-layoffs-part-of-broader-beverage-manufacturing-trend/)*, "As businesses replace jobs in manufacturing, distribution and general office functions with automation, the job loss will continue as beverage manufacturers try to combat shrinking margins by investing heavily in new product segments such as non-alcoholic and wellness drinks — which require employees with completely different job skills."*

Kaelani's observation about the broader beverage industry applies directly to the BrewDog situation. The company's inability to adapt its business model — clinging to rapid bar expansion while the market shifted — mirrors the wider pattern of legacy beverage businesses struggling to reinvent themselves.

For the 484 workers now facing redundancy, the immediate priority is understanding their rights. Under UK employment law, employees with two or more years of continuous service are entitled to statutory redundancy pay. The Insolvency Service will handle redundancy payments where the employer cannot, though the process can take weeks. Workers should also register with their local Jobcentre Plus promptly to access benefits and job-seeking support.

## Which BrewDog Bars Are Closing?

Of BrewDog's network of bars across the UK and Ireland, 38 locations will close permanently as part of the administration process. Only 11 "strategic brewpubs" — those deemed commercially viable by Tilray — will survive the transition.

The closures span cities and towns across the UK, hitting local high streets and entertainment districts. Each closed venue represents not just lost jobs for bar staff, but a reduction in foot traffic and spending for surrounding businesses. For workers at these locations, there was no phased closure or transition period — the bars simply did not reopen.

The 11 retained locations, including the flagship Waterloo site in London, will continue operating under Tilray ownership. Workers at these pubs will transfer to the new employer under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings) regulations, which protect their existing employment terms and conditions.

## What Can Displaced BrewDog Workers Do Next?

If you are among the 484 workers affected by BrewDog's collapse, there are concrete steps you can take right now:

**Understand your redundancy entitlements.** Statutory redundancy pay in the UK is based on your age, length of service and weekly pay (capped at £643 per week as of April 2025). The Insolvency Service handles claims when a company enters administration.

**Register for support immediately.** Contact your local Jobcentre Plus to register as a jobseeker. You may be eligible for Universal Credit, New Style Jobseeker's Allowance or other support while you search for new employment.

**Leverage your hospitality skills.** The UK hospitality sector, despite its challenges, remains one of the largest employers in the country. Roles in bar management, food service, customer experience and events management are transferable across the industry. The sector recorded over 180,000 job vacancies in late 2025, according to the Office for National Statistics.

**Consider adjacent industries.** Skills developed in hospitality — customer service, team management, working under pressure, inventory management — translate well into retail, logistics, healthcare support and facilities management roles.

**Update your professional profile.** Make sure your CV reflects measurable achievements, not just job titles. Quantify your experience: number of covers served, team sizes managed, revenue targets hit.

## People Also Asked

**Q: Will BrewDog reopen any of the 38 closed bars?**

**A:** No. The 38 bars not included in the Tilray deal have been permanently closed as part of the administration process. Only 11 strategically selected brewpubs will continue operating under Tilray ownership. There are currently no plans to reopen any of the shuttered locations. The closed sites' leases will be handled by the administrators at AlixPartners.

**Q: Are BrewDog's Equity for Punks investors entitled to any compensation?**

**A:** Unfortunately, no. Under the administration structure, TSG Consumer Partners holds preference shares that give it priority over ordinary equity holders. With the £33 million sale price falling far short of the company's total debts, there is no remaining capital to distribute to the approximately 220,000 Equity for Punks investors. Crowdfunding investments in private companies carry significant risk, and administration is one of the scenarios where investors can lose their entire stake.

**Q: What redundancy pay are laid-off BrewDog workers entitled to?**

**A:** UK employees with two or more years of continuous service are entitled to statutory redundancy pay, calculated based on age, length of service and weekly pay (capped at £643 per week). Because BrewDog is in administration, redundancy payments will be processed through the government's Insolvency Service rather than directly from the employer. Employees may also be entitled to unpaid wages, holiday pay and notice pay through the same process. Claims should be submitted as soon as possible through [GOV.UK](http://GOV.UK).
