Canadian employers have until [December 3, 2026, at 11:59 pm (Pacific Time)](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide.html) to apply for Canada Summer Jobs 2027 funding, a wage subsidy for hiring young people over the summer. The window opened on [October 27, 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html), and it opened [a week earlier than in previous years](https://cknewstoday.ca/midwestern/news/2026/10/27/applications-open-for-canada-summer-jobs-program). Eligible employers are [not-for-profit organizations and the public sector, as well as private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees across Canada](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide.html). The jobs themselves are for [youth aged 15 to 30](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs.html), and every funded role is [posted on Job Bank](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html) for young people to apply. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers, this guide covers both sides, what an employer must do before December 3 and what a student or young worker can do to be ready when the 2027 jobs appear in spring.

## What Has Canada Opened for Summer 2027, and When Does It Close?

Patty Hajdu, the federal Minister of Jobs and Families, announced on Tuesday that [the employer application period for Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) 2027 is open until December 3](https://voiceonline.com/canada-summer-jobs-2027-application-period-for-employers-open-now-until-december-3/), with an 11:59 pm Pacific Time cutoff. This is the employer stage only, and the funded jobs [go live on Job Bank each spring](https://www.jobbank.gc.ca/youth).

[Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ)](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs.html) sits under the federal Youth Employment and Skills Strategy and helps youth gain paid summer work experience. The program is run by [Employment and Social Development Canada](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/news/2026/04/canada-summer-jobs-2026-youth-hiring-period-now-open-with-up-to-100000-jobs-available.html), and employers wait for [written confirmation from Service Canada](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html) before making any commitments.

The deadline is firm. Applications [received or postmarked after the deadline date](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html) will not be considered, and applications sent by fax or by email are not accepted either. The program will [answer enquiries on the application process during business hours between October 27, 2026, and December 3, 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide.html).

The earlier opening does not change the notification period, which [remains the same](https://cknewstoday.ca/midwestern/news/2026/10/27/applications-open-for-canada-summer-jobs-program) as before.

## Which Employers Can Apply, and What Is the New Two-Year Rule?

There are [3 types of organizations that can apply for funding](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html), namely not-for-profit employers, public sector employers and private sector employers. [Not-for-profit employers include community, charitable or voluntary organizations (including faith-based organizations), associations of workers or employers as well as professional and industrial organizations, Indigenous not-for-profit organizations, non-governmental organizations, unions, sector councils and not-for-profit Band Councils](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html).

An organization [counts as public sector when 50% or more of its operating revenue comes from government appropriations (voted through parliament or annual legislation) and it must account for its activities to the government that provided that revenue](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html). [Among others, public sector employers include public community colleges and vocational schools, public health (including public hospitals, nursing homes, senior citizen homes, rehabilitation homes and public libraries), public degree-granting universities and colleges, municipal governments and agencies (including regional legislative bodies and departments), school boards and elementary and secondary institutions, and territorial governments](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html).

Private businesses face a size cap. They [must have 50 or fewer full-time employees across Canada at the time of application to be eligible for CSJ funding](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html), and full-time means [those working 30 hours or more a week](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html). Independent franchise owners can apply if they [employ 50 or fewer working full-time employees across Canada, regardless of the number of business numbers](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html).

Every applicant must [be registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html), hold its own CRA business number, and have [a CRA payroll deductions program account (RP) before hiring youth through the CSJ program](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html).

There is [a new rule this year](https://cknewstoday.ca/midwestern/news/2026/10/27/applications-open-for-canada-summer-jobs-program) about how long an organization has existed. An organization must have [been in operation for a minimum of 2 years by December 31, 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html), which means it [had a valid Canada Revenue Agency business number and had been actively and continuously providing services or conducting business activities for at least 2 years](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html) by that date. Organizations in operation for less than 2 years [can apply and will be considered for CSJ 2027 funding if they met all the conditions of their CSJ 2026 funding agreement and received reimbursement for at least one CSJ-funded job under CSJ 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html).

[Five kinds of employers are ineligible](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html), namely members of the House of Commons and the Senate or members of their immediate family, federal government departments and agencies, provincial departments and agencies, organizations that engage in partisan political activities, and organizations that engage in activities that directly or indirectly infringe, undermine, weaken, or restrict the exercise of human rights legally protected in Canada.

## How Much of a Young Worker's Wage Does Canada Summer Jobs Cover?

The split depends on the type of employer. Not-for-profit employers can get [up to 100% of the provincial or territorial adult minimum hourly wage](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html) plus the associated Mandatory Employment Related Costs (MERCs), such as Employment Insurance premiums, pension contributions and vacation pay. Public and private sector employers can get [up to 50% of the provincial or territorial adult minimum hourly wage](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html), and their MERCs are not reimbursed.

The program gives its own worked example. When a private employer pays a youth C$17.00 (about US$12.11) an hour in a province where the minimum wage is C$16.00 (about US$11.40), [CSJ covers 50% of the minimum wage, which is C$8.00 an hour](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html) (about US$5.70). In the same way, [if an employer pays more than the minimum wage, CSJ will reimburse MERCs only on the minimum wage portion](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html), and the employer must cover the remaining MERCs.

The minimum wage figures used to assess applications in this round include [Ontario at C$17.95 as of October 1, 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html) (about US$12.79), and British Columbia at C$18.25 (about US$13.00) as of June 1, 2026. [Some provinces and territories allow exceptions to the minimum wage](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html). Where an employer asks to pay a lower minimum wage, such as a student wage, [CSJ funding will be based on that lower amount](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html), and any such request [will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html).

Employers can also request an advance payment, paid only if the project is approved. The maximum advance is [75% of the total value of the agreement for projects C$100,000 and under](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html) (about US$71,200), and 50% for larger projects. Approved employers may also get [additional funding towards accommodation measures to support youth with disabilities](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html).

> The best way to prepare young people for tomorrow’s jobs is to connect them with meaningful work experiences today, Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, said in announcing the 2027 application period, according to [the Indo-Canadian Voice report](https://voiceonline.com/canada-summer-jobs-2027-application-period-for-employers-open-now-until-december-3/).

## What Kind of Jobs Will Get Priority Next Summer?

[Every year, the Government of Canada establishes national priorities](https://voiceonline.com/canada-summer-jobs-2027-application-period-for-employers-open-now-until-december-3/) for the program. In 2027, priority goes to [jobs that provide work experience for young people aged 15 to 30](https://voiceonline.com/canada-summer-jobs-2027-application-period-for-employers-open-now-until-december-3/) in four areas.

- **Construction.** This covers [design, development, remodelling, renovation, retrofit, and repair of buildings, structures, roads, bridges, or other infrastructure projects](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html), and also administrative support to construction teams or housing organizations.
- **Environment and climate.** This work [does not necessarily require specialized expertise](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html) and can include conservation, restoration and climate education.
- **Digital skills and AI.** Qualifying tasks include [collecting, managing, analyzing, and visualizing data](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html), coding, cybersecurity support and using AI tools for research or client service.
- **Community not-for-profits.** Only [not-for-profit organizations that support underserved or equity-deserving communities will be awarded points](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html) under this priority.

Local priorities matter too, because [Members of Parliament set local priorities to support their communities](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html) in each riding. The program also encourages [providing a salary above the provincial or territorial minimum wage](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html), keeping the youth on after the agreement ends, and having a supervision plan and a mentoring plan.

## How Do Employers Apply Before the Deadline Closes?

There are [3 ways to apply for Canada Summer Jobs funding](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html), namely the Grants and Contributions Online Services (GCOS) portal, an online fillable form, or a PDF form sent by mail or handed in person. [GCOS is the recommended method](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html). Inside the portal, employers select [CFP-CSJ/AP-ÉEC-2026-307 from the Open Call for Proposals section](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html) to reach the 2027 form.

GCOS is about to become the only online door. Starting in 2028, [GCOS will be the only online platform for Canada Summer Jobs applications](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html), and [the online fillable application form will no longer be available starting in CSJ 2028](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html). [Registering for GCOS uses the organization's CRA RP (payroll) business number and an identity check](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html).

Proof of submission matters. A GCOS application shows a confirmation number on screen, and [if you do not receive a confirmation number or a confirmation email, your application was not submitted](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html). The fillable form has its own trap, since [sessions expire after 1 hour of inactivity](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html).

Paper applications must be [postmarked by a postal service on or before December 3, 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html), and an application without a clear postmark may be counted as late. In-person applications [must be received before the close of business of the Service Canada office on December 3, 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html).

## What Happens After an Employer Applies?

Service Canada [reviews applications December to March](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html), checks eligibility, scores eligible projects against the program objectives, and builds a list of recommended projects. It then seeks feedback from MPs on community needs before final recommendations.

Funding decisions are made in March, and Service Canada will begin [notifying organizations of funding decisions in early April](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html), with every organization getting a decision by the end of June. Decisions are final, and [there is no appeal process](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html).

Approval can be partial. On average, [jobs are funded for 8 weeks at 35 hours a week](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html), and an approved project may get less money or fewer weeks than it asked for. Employers also cannot be paid back for [activities that take place before your project is approved and a signed agreement is in place](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html).

Demand is high. The program received [42,800+ applications from employers in 2025](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs.html) and funded 27,450+ employers that year.

> Funding is limited, so not all applications will be approved, according to [the Canada Summer Jobs after-you-apply page](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html).

## Which Young People Can Work a Canada Summer Jobs Position?

Young workers must [be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of their summer job](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html). They must also [be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html), which [includes having a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the start of their summer job](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html).

International students [are not eligible participants](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html). Youth cannot take part if [you're still waiting for a refugee decision, or if you only have a visitor visa, youth visa, or work visa](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/youth/plan.html) either.

The work is full-time and short. Funded jobs offer [a minimum of 30 hours to a maximum of 40 hours a week](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html) in Canada between April 19, 2027, and August 28, 2027, for 6 to 16 consecutive weeks. Projects with [youth teleworking outside of Canada](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html) are not eligible.

The program also aims to reach young people who face barriers to work, and it [encourages employers to prioritize recruitment of youth facing barriers](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html). For 2027, those youth are [Indigenous youth, racialized youth, Black youth, youth with disabilities, youth in a rural, remote, northern, or fly-in community, youth in an official language minority community and 2SLGBTQI+ youth](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html).

## When Will Young Job Seekers Be Able to Find These Jobs?

Not yet. Funded roles go online after approvals, and [CSJ-funded positions will automatically be posted on the Job Bank.gc.ca website and mobile app](https://voiceonline.com/canada-summer-jobs-2027-application-period-for-employers-open-now-until-december-3/).

Each Job Bank posting shows the details a young worker needs to compare offers. The list includes [hourly wage, weekly hours, language(s) required, preferred level of education, anticipated job start date](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html) and the number of jobs available. Young people then [contact the employer to apply](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/youth/plan.html) through the listing.

Last year gives a sense of timing. The 2026 hiring period opened on April 20, 2026, and young job seekers could search for CSJ jobs [until July 20, 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/news/2026/04/canada-summer-jobs-2026-youth-hiring-period-now-open-with-up-to-100000-jobs-available.html) on the [Job Bank website and mobile app](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/news/2026/04/canada-summer-jobs-2026-youth-hiring-period-now-open-with-up-to-100000-jobs-available.html).

## How Many Jobs Could There Be, and Why Does This Year Matter for Youth?

The 2026 round offered [up to 100,000 CSJ openings](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/news/2026/04/canada-summer-jobs-2026-youth-hiring-period-now-open-with-up-to-100000-jobs-available.html) for people aged 15 to 30. The program created [75,000+ jobs in 2025](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs.html), and since 2019 it has supported [more than 600,000 job opportunities for youth](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/news/2026/04/canada-summer-jobs-2026-youth-hiring-period-now-open-with-up-to-100000-jobs-available.html).

The money behind it is part of a wider youth push. Ottawa says it has invested [more than C$1.5 billion through Budget 2025](https://voiceonline.com/canada-summer-jobs-2027-application-period-for-employers-open-now-until-december-3/) (about US$1.07 billion) in the Student Work Placement Program and the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, including CSJ. That investment is meant to support [about 175,000 opportunities for youth in 2026-27](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/news/2026/04/canada-summer-jobs-2026-youth-hiring-period-now-open-with-up-to-100000-jobs-available.html) across the three programs.

In [Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey for September 2026](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/261009/dq261009a-eng.htm), [employment among youth aged 15 to 24 fell by 48,000, or 1.8%, for a second consecutive month in September](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/261009/dq261009a-eng.htm), and the youth unemployment rate was [little changed at 13.0%](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/261009/dq261009a-eng.htm). [The September decline was concentrated among youth aged 15 to 24 as well as women aged 25 to 54](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/261009/dq261009a-eng.htm), in a month when [total employment declined by 68,000](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/261009/dq261009a-eng.htm).

Local numbers show what the program can do in one riding. Perth-Wellington MP John Nater said [last summer over 300 jobs were created](https://cknewstoday.ca/midwestern/news/2026/10/27/applications-open-for-canada-summer-jobs-program) across his riding through the program.

## What This Means for Employers and Young Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

For small employers and nonprofits, the subsidy is real money, but it is not guaranteed. The [two-year operating rule and, for private firms, the 50-employee cap](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html) decide who can apply, and [funding decisions are based on assessment results, MP feedback, and available funding](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/after-you-apply.html). A construction, environment, digital or community job with a mentor, a supervision plan and pay above minimum wage lines up with [the national priorities and program objectives in the 2027 applicant guide](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html). The program itself asks employers to [submit your application as early as possible](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/apply.html) so there is time to get help before December 3.

For young people, the move now is preparation, not applying. Use the winter to get ready.

- **Employers, check the two-year rule first.** If your organization will not reach [2 years of operation by December 31, 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html), it can apply only if it [met all the conditions of its CSJ 2026 funding agreement and received reimbursement for at least one CSJ-funded job under CSJ 2026](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html).
- **Employers, design the job around a priority.** Read [the 2027 national priorities](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/about.html) and your riding's local list before writing the job description.
- **Young workers, get a SIN and a resume ready.** [A valid SIN is required at the start of the summer job](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/funding/canada-summer-jobs/applicant-guide/who-can-apply.html), and a clean [first-job resume with no work experience](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/how-to-make-a-resume-for-your-first-job) helps when postings open.
- **Young workers, save the Job Bank youth search.** Bookmark [the Job Bank youth search](https://www.jobbank.gc.ca/youth) and check it regularly once employers start hearing back, then review [common internship interview questions](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/common-internship-interview-questions) before you contact an employer.
