Hobart insulation specialist CBG Systems needs [at least 80 more workers](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/) after winning an [$83 million contract](https://www.baesystems.com/en/article/tasmanias-cbg-systems-scores-major-contract-award-for-hunter-class-frigate-program) to insulate the Royal Australian Navy's first three Hunter class frigates. Hiring and training are [already underway](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/), and the contract is expected to take at least eight years to deliver. At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) we look past the contract value to the parts a job seeker can act on, which here means where the roles sit, who is eligible for defence work, and how long the jobs are likely to last. Here is what the deal involves and how to put yourself in line for it.

## What Did CBG Systems Actually Win?

The contract is with [BAE Systems Maritime Australia](https://www.baesystems.com/en/article/tasmanias-cbg-systems-scores-major-contract-award-for-hunter-class-frigate-program), and BAE has [signed contracts to build](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330) the first three frigates. The deal covers the supply and installation of fire, thermal and acoustic insulation, linings and pinning on each of [the first three ships](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/).

This is not a first job for the company on the program. CBG Systems has already delivered insulation into the [prototype blocks](https://www.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/cbg-systems-to-insulate-hunter-class-frigates) that were used to test and refine the tools, systems and processes of the build, and its managing director traces that work back to [2023](https://www.navaltoday.com/2026/09/23/cbg-systems-secures-dollar83m-hunter-class-frigate-contract). The new deal steps that up to all three [Batch 1 frigates](https://www.navaltoday.com/2026/09/23/cbg-systems-secures-dollar83m-hunter-class-frigate-contract).

The timing matters for anyone thinking about applying. BAE describes the next phase for NUSHIP Hunter as the [fit-out phase](https://www.navaltoday.com/2026/09/23/cbg-systems-secures-dollar83m-hunter-class-frigate-contract), and the keel for the first frigate was [laid at Osborne last month](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/), so the insulation work is tied to a build that is already moving.

One number in the coverage is easy to confuse with the jobs figure. The award adds to the [more than 140 contracts](https://www.baesystems.com/en/article/tasmanias-cbg-systems-scores-major-contract-award-for-hunter-class-frigate-program) already let for the first three frigates, with more than 80 Australian suppliers working on the program. That supplier count measures companies, not people. The jobs figure is a separate number, and it belongs to CBG Systems alone.

## How Many People Will CBG Systems Hire, and Where Will They Work?

Managing director Javier Herbon put the current workforce at [50 people](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/) and said the company needs at least another 80 for this contract alone. The BAE release describes CBG Systems as an SME with [more than 45 employees](https://www.baesystems.com/en/article/tasmanias-cbg-systems-scores-major-contract-award-for-hunter-class-frigate-program), so the two counts are close.

That is the real story for job seekers. A small specialist firm hiring on this scale is worth approaching even if you have not installed marine insulation before, and the company confirms that [training is already underway](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/) alongside hiring.

Location is less clear than the headlines suggest. None of the sources we read say how the new roles split between states. What is confirmed is that the company will set up at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia with its [own personnel, workshop and office space](https://www.australiandefence.com.au/news/news/cbg-systems-to-insulate-hunter-class-frigates), and that it is growing its South Australian team in a considered way. At the same time the company is planning a new [5,000 square metre facility](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/) at Technopark in Tasmania, on a 7,000 square metre block of Crown land bought from the state government.

That points to openings in two places, although the split is not confirmed. Some could sit at the [Osborne Naval Shipyard](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/), where the frigates are being assembled. Others are likely to be in Tasmania, where the company is planning its new facility and where Herbon says there is a [very good pool of talent](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/).

> CBG Systems employs [50 people](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/) and needs at least 80 more for the frigate contract alone, with hiring and training already underway.

## What Does Marine Insulation Work Actually Involve?

It is more technical than the word insulation suggests. CBG Systems' own site describes a [turn-key installation service](https://cbgsystems.com/insulation/installation-services/) delivered by specialist insulation technicians anywhere in the world. On this contract, that means installing the [fire, thermal and acoustic insulation, linings and pinning](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/) into each of the first three frigates.

The company also sells a [training and supervision package](https://cbgsystems.com/insulation/installation-services/), in which its people train and supervise a client's own crew, or the client engages a local subcontractor. That hints at a possible career path, from installing to supervising and training other crews, which is a service CBG already sells.

There is a maintenance side too. The same page lists [retrofit and upgrade work](https://cbgsystems.com/insulation/installation-services/) on older vessels, onboard surveys to assess the condition of structural fire protection or quantify damage after an incident, and scheduled annual maintenance. That means skills learned on a new build can also lead into repair and survey work.

The standards are strict because the stakes are high. The company holds [ISO9001:2015 accreditation](https://cbgsystems.com/about-us/) and says its marine products carry Marine Equipment Directive approval, with some products also certified by the United States Coast Guard and Transport Canada. It also says it is recognised by military operators worldwide, including the US Navy.

Sound is a big part of why the insulation matters. The frigates rely on [stealth and sound proofing](https://www.navaltoday.com/2026/09/23/cbg-systems-secures-dollar83m-hunter-class-frigate-contract) to be effective in combat. Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy put it plainly at the Hobart announcement, saying that to detect and destroy submarines, [you need to be as quiet as a submarine](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/), and adding that the insulation also helps protect sailors if a ship sustains battle damage.

## Who Is Eligible for Defence Shipbuilding Jobs?

This is the question to settle before you apply, because it can rule some people out regardless of skill.

We could not find published role requirements for these openings. Under the federal security framework, anyone who needs ongoing access to [security classified resources](https://www.agsva.gov.au/applicants/eligibility-suitability) must hold a clearance at the right level, and the rules for those are public. The Australian Government Security Vetting Agency says that to be eligible an individual must be an [Australian citizen and have a checkable background](https://www.agsva.gov.au/applicants/eligibility-suitability). A sponsoring organisation can waive those requirements where there is an exceptional business need and a risk assessment is done, but that is not a guarantee of a clearance.

Eligibility is only half of it. The agency also assesses suitability, judging an applicant's [overall integrity](https://www.agsva.gov.au/applicants/eligibility-suitability) against six traits, which are honesty, trustworthiness, maturity, tolerance, resilience and loyalty.

The sponsorship rule changes how you apply. All security clearances must be [sponsored by a government or business entity](https://www.agsva.gov.au/applicants/eligibility-suitability), and individuals cannot sponsor their own. In practice that means you cannot get a clearance on your own and then look for defence work. A sponsoring employer or agency has to start the process.

Advertising from BAE, which has [contracts to build the first three ships](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330), shows how this plays out at the shipyard. A current BAE job advertisement at Osborne states that because a [defence security clearance is required](https://careers.au.baesystems.com/jobtools/jncustomsearch.viewFullSingle?in_organid=16804&in_jnCounter=226283805), applicants must be Australian citizens who hold one or can obtain and maintain one. It adds that the International Traffic in Arms Regulations apply, so nationality may be a factor in suitability.

## What Is Being Advertised at the Osborne Shipyard Right Now?

If you want a benchmark for what shipyard work on this program looks like, BAE's live vacancies are a useful one.

One advertisement posted on [18 September 2026](https://careers.au.baesystems.com/jobtools/jncustomsearch.viewFullSingle?in_organid=16804&in_jnCounter=226283805) is for hull welders on the Hunter program, offered as permanent full time roles with $13,100 in relocation assistance to move to Adelaide. Applications close on [9 October 2026](https://careers.au.baesystems.com/jobtools/jncustomsearch.viewFullSingle?in_organid=16804&in_jnCounter=226283805).

The entry bar in that advertisement is practical rather than academic. The essential skills are fabrication experience with MIG or flux core welding, the [ability to read drawings](https://careers.au.baesystems.com/jobtools/jncustomsearch.viewFullSingle?in_organid=16804&in_jnCounter=226283805), a strong safety focus, good time keeping and clear communication. Hires work within the bounds of their current competence and complete on the job training as required.

Two details are worth noting even if you never weld. The relocation offer shows the shipyard is recruiting beyond Adelaide. And BAE says it commits to [responding to every applicant](https://careers.au.baesystems.com/jobtools/jncustomsearch.viewFullSingle?in_organid=16804&in_jnCounter=226283805) through the Circle Back Initiative, so an application there should not disappear without an answer.

If welding is your trade, the breakdown of [welder pay and how to earn more](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/welder-salary) sets out how certification and specialisation move the rate. For a comparison from the United States, our piece on a [federal shipbuilding program](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/federal-shipbuilding-skilled-trade-jobs-2026) looks at the skilled trade roles it is trying to fill.

## How Long Will This Work Last?

A long time by the company's own estimate, and that is the strongest argument for these jobs.

Herbon described the deal as the biggest in the company's 40-year history and said it will take [at least eight years to deliver](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/). A role that starts on a contract with that horizon is closer to a career than a project.

The wider program points the same way. The fleet is now [six Hunter frigates](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330), cut from nine, and the first is due for delivery in 2032. Budget documents show close to [$27 billion allocated](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330) to the first three ships, a figure that also covers building the Osborne shipyards, and a separate contract will be needed for the final three. The stated hope is for the shipyard to eventually produce a new frigate every [18 months to two years](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330).

The ABC's reporting sets out both sides of whether that plan holds. Supporters, including the Defence Industry Minister, argue it will be the most advanced anti-submarine warship in the world. Critics such as Strategic Analysis Australia's Marcus Hellyer argue Australia is spending [$27 billion](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330) on a small number of very expensive warships, and that the remaining money could go to other vessels or autonomous systems. He goes as far as arguing that scrapping the program could still be the right call. The first three ships are [already under contract](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330), which is what CBG Systems' deal is tied to, but the argument is a reminder that the later work is not guaranteed.

The history is a warning worth taking seriously. Adelaide's shipyards entered what became known as the [valley of death](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330) in 2016, when work on the Hobart class destroyers wound down with no project to follow, and skilled workers left for road building and jobs interstate. BAE's Andy Coxall said that once workers reset like that, it is very difficult to get them back. Establishing continuous naval shipbuilding became a [stated aim of the Hunter project](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330).

> The contract is expected to take [at least eight years](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/) to deliver, which makes these roles far closer to a career than a short project.

## Where Does Tasmania Fit Into This Defence Work?

Tasmania already has a cluster of [exporting technology firms](https://www.building.tas.gov.au/about-us/tasmanian-technopark), and CBG Systems plans to build there.

The company describes itself as a Tasmanian business specialising in [fire, thermal and acoustic insulation](https://cbgsystems.com/about-us/), specialist antenna systems and signature management, with more than 30 years in marine insulation and communications. Its planned new facility is [at Technopark in Tasmania](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/), and [the Tasmanian Technopark site](https://www.building.tas.gov.au/about-us/tasmanian-technopark) houses about 20 companies employing more than 500 people and exporting to over 46 countries, on a five hectare headland about 15 minutes from Hobart's city centre.

The planning step is local. A development application for the new facility is being lodged with [Glenorchy City Council](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/). The [council's industrial development page](https://www.gcc.tas.gov.au/business/develop/industrial/) pitches the area on its closeness to the Port of Hobart, established industrial precincts and access to a skilled and available workforce.

The minister framed the win in broader terms. Conroy said the contract would lock in [hundreds of high-skill, high-tech jobs](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/), a figure that goes wider than CBG Systems' own count and should not be read as its hiring target. The number to plan around is the company's own count of [at least 80 more workers](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

The honest read is that this is a modest number of jobs with a long runway. A specialist firm that is hiring and training for a contract expected to run [at least eight years](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/) is the kind of employer that can train people into a lasting trade.

If you already work with your hands, in trades such as insulation installation, sheet metal, fabrication, fit-out carpentry or scaffolding, put that experience at the top of your CV and name any work you have done to a certified standard.

Check your eligibility before anything else. If you are an Australian citizen with a checkable background, say so plainly in your application, because it answers a question a defence employer is likely to ask. If you are not a citizen, understand that the clearance rules may rule you out of shipyard roles even where your skills fit.

Decide which location you want. Roles embedded at Osborne mean working in [Adelaide's Osborne shipyards](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-14/federal-politics-australia-billions-spent-on-three-warships/107132330). Roles in Tasmania would sit with the company's home operations, where its new facility is planned at [the Technopark site near Hobart](https://www.building.tas.gov.au/about-us/tasmanian-technopark). Ask which one a vacancy is for before you apply, since the published material does not yet split the numbers.

Contact the company directly rather than waiting for a job board. We could not find a careers page on the [company's website](https://cbgsystems.com/about-us/) at the time of writing, and hiring is already underway, so a short, direct approach through the company that names your trade, your citizenship status and your availability is a sensible route. If you would rather join the prime contractor, BAE's current hull welder vacancy closes on [9 October 2026](https://careers.au.baesystems.com/jobtools/jncustomsearch.viewFullSingle?in_organid=16804&in_jnCounter=226283805).

Treat the first role as an entry point. The company's own services run from installation to supervision to through-life maintenance, which suggests room to move between kinds of work inside one employer on a contract expected to take [at least eight years](https://pulsetasmania.com.au/news/hobart-manufacturer-to-hire-80-more-workers-after-83m-navy-frigate-deal/).
