Healthcare The long wait is over for [Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health](https://cedarhillregional.com/), a 136-bed, full-service hospital that opened to patients in Southeast D.C. on April 15, 2025. The [$434.4 million facility](https://mayor.dc.gov/release/mayor-bowser-deliver-promise-open-new-full-service-hospital-east-river-opening-cedar-hill) includes adult and children’s emergency departments, trauma care, and maternal health and delivery services. As the region grapples with healthcare disparities, the hospital aims to be a community partner, not just a place to get treated. ### Who Runs and Staffs Cedar Hill? Universal Health Services (UHS) runs the hospital under a 75-year agreement, while the GW Medical Faculty Associates deliver care, according to the [DC government’s opening release](https://dgs.dc.gov/node/1775711). Building it was a jobs story too: more than 500 District residents worked on construction, including 321 new hires from Wards 5, 7 and 8. Hiring kept going after the doors opened. In its first annual report to the Mayor, the hospital said it hired 168 District residents, beating the city’s requirement of 67, [7News reported in July 2026](https://wjla.com/news/local/cedar-hill-washington-dc-gw-health-hospital-medical-center-safety-dangers-risks-human-services-staffing-maternal-services-immediate-jeopardy-southeast-complaints-surgery-treatment). According to the [Health Resources and Services Administration](https://data.hrsa.gov/Default/GenerateHPSAQuarterlyReport) (HRSA), more than 102 million people nationwide live in designated primary care Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), as of September 30, 2026. Neighborhoods like Southeast D.C. feel that gap, which makes recruiting local talent all the more pressing. ### A Dose of Healthcare Insights: Addressing Disparities Southeast D.C. is no stranger to healthcare challenges, from higher rates of chronic illness to limited access to quality care. The [DC Mayor’s office](https://dgs.dc.gov/node/1775711) framed the opening as delivering on a promise to open a new, full-service hospital east of the river. Beyond emergency care, the hospital offers outpatient and specialty services such as dialysis, infusion, cardiac rehab and physical therapy.
