The Changwon National Industrial Complex was [designated a national specialized complex for defense aircraft engines on September 30](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585211), and [South Gyeongsang Province](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454) has set a target of [more than 8,000 new jobs by 2035](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub). That figure is a goal, [set next to revenue and export targets](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454), and it is not a count of posted vacancies. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers who work as mechanical, materials, manufacturing or test engineers, or who are weighing a master's degree in aerospace, the useful detail sits in the province's own release, the new graduate program and the hiring steps at the anchor employer. This guide sets out what is new, who is involved and what you can do now.

## What Exactly Was Designated on September 30?

The complex in Changwon is now an [advanced aircraft engine specialized complex](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub) in the defense sector of the national advanced strategic industry program. It is the first such national hub in South Gyeongsang Province, and the nation's only [advanced aircraft engine hub](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585306).

The decision came at the 9th meeting of the [National Advanced Strategic Industry Committee](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585211), chaired by Prime Minister Han Sung-sook. The same meeting named three new complexes in total, for [robots in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, defense in Changwon and batteries in South Jeolla](https://www.ebn.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=1726260), after five regions applied between December and February.

The national hub program is designed to [upgrade industrial ecosystems by clustering related companies with research and support functions](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub). It supports [industrial infrastructure, joint research and development facilities, corporate technology development and commercialization, and workforce training](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub).

The province's aerospace industry division summarized the plan in a [briefing release](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454). That plan links [engine development and manufacturing in Changwon with testing and research in Jinju and complete aircraft in Sacheon](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454), sets a development budget with revenue and export goals, involves [Hanwha Aerospace and other firms](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454), and comes with a graduate school already secured for engine specialists.

## What Does the Target of 8,000 Jobs Actually Mean?

South Gyeongsang Province has set targets of [6 trillion won in revenue, 3 trillion won in exports and more than 8,000 new jobs by 2035](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub). In Korean, the jobs target is worded as [new employment of 8 thousand or more](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454), next to the revenue and export goals for the same year.

That is a [goal tied to a plan](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454), not a hiring announcement. The [target](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454) is not split by employer, job type or year, and no application route is named for jobs under it.

The jobs goal sits next to a supply chain goal, to raise the localization rate for core aircraft engine items to [around 90% by 2035 from about 22% now](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585306).

> This designation of a specialized complex is a new starting point for achieving technological self-reliance in Korea’s advanced aircraft engines, Vice Governor Choi Man-rim said (translated), according to [the NoCut News report](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585306).

## Who Are the Employers Inside the Changwon Complex?

The Changwon complex is home to [43 materials, parts and equipment makers and partner firms, including Hanwha Aerospace, along with the Korea Institute of Materials Science](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub).

Participating companies including [Hanwha Aerospace, Doosan Enerbility and SeAH Changwon Integrated Special Steel](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub) have drawn up investment plans totaling 2.28 trillion won ($1.6 billion) in connection with the hub. That sum covers [large-scale facilities and R&D investment](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585306) by 43 companies in the province, with Hanwha Aerospace as the anchor company.

Hanwha Aerospace assembled aero-engines at its Changwon facility, as a [group feature dated July 30, 2024](https://www.hanwha.com/newsroom/news/feature-stories/charting-a-bright-course-the-future-of-aviation-engine-engineering.do) showed. That feature put Hanwha's record at [45 years of experience in licensed production of aircraft engines with partners such as General Electric, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce](https://www.hanwha.com/newsroom/news/feature-stories/charting-a-bright-course-the-future-of-aviation-engine-engineering.do), and more than 10,000 aero-engines produced over that period. It also said Hanwha Aerospace had secured a contract in 2024 with [the Defense Acquisition Program Administration to manufacture engines for KAI fighter jets](https://www.hanwha.com/newsroom/news/feature-stories/charting-a-bright-course-the-future-of-aviation-engine-engineering.do), and had expanded its Changwon facility to support that production. The same feature gave Hanwha's end goal as producing the advanced aero-engine [entirely with its own technology](https://www.hanwha.com/newsroom/news/feature-stories/charting-a-bright-course-the-future-of-aviation-engine-engineering.do), the same move in house that sits behind [McLaren's plan to double its UK factory workforce as engine building comes in house](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/mclaren-uk-engines-1000-jobs).

## What Kind of Engine Is Korea Trying to Build?

An advanced aircraft engine here means a [next-generation turbofan engine with base thrust of at least 16,000 pound-force](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub), rising to the 24,000 pound-force class with the afterburner running. The government is developing it in stages and aims to launch the main project in [2028](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub).

Korea [independently developed a supersonic fighter but still relies on licensed production of foreign technology](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585306) for its engine, so exporting the jet requires the approval of the engine technology's country of origin. The engine localization project is run jointly by [the defense procurement agency, the trade and industry ministry and the space agency](https://www.ebn.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=1726260), and advanced aircraft engines are currently entirely dependent on foreign sources.

If the project review for the advanced aircraft engine program, [expected to be promoted next year at a scale of about 5.5 trillion won](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585211), is completed and the budget is injected, it is expected to serve as an opportunity to strengthen the aerospace and defense industrial base in the Changwon region, says the NoCut News report on Rep. Heo Sung-moo's announcement.

> Aircraft engines require advanced technology because they operate for long periods under high temperatures and high pressure (translated), according to [the Seoul Economic Daily article](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub).

## How Do Changwon, Jinju and Sacheon Fit Together?

South Gyeongsang already has [engine development and manufacturing in Changwon, testing and research in Jinju, and complete aircraft manufacturing in Sacheon](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub). The province plans to [link these into a full-cycle industrial ecosystem](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub) running from materials and components to engines and finished aircraft.

In the government's plan, Changwon covers aircraft engines, materials and parts, and Sacheon and Jinju cover finished aircraft and the wider aviation industry, in a planned [South Gyeongsang aerospace full-cycle belt](https://www.ebn.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=1726260). Testing and evaluation infrastructure and [specialist workforce training](https://www.ebn.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=1726260) are planned alongside it.

## What Will the 773.1 Billion Won Plan Cover?

The province's development plan runs to [773.1 billion won ($554 million) through 2036](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub) and has three strategies and 36 projects. The strategies are [localizing proprietary technology, achieving supply chain self-reliance and securing implementation capacity for the hub](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub).

The first strategy builds a base for [the full cycle from core technology research to testing, certification and demonstration](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454), and supports follow-on development so that technology from national R&D turns into real products. The second supports commercialization at materials and parts companies and the [skills of their employees](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub). It backs the growth of small and mid-sized firms and helps regional companies move into aircraft engines and [enter domestic and overseas aviation and defense supply chains](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454). The third sets up a [dedicated task force](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub) and cooperative governance among companies, universities and research institutions.

A designated national complex can also receive [funding for key infrastructure, R&D support, testbeds and low-interest loans](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585211) for small and medium-sized enterprises and mid-sized companies, as well as exemptions from preliminary feasibility studies. The program also offers [expedited permits and approvals](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub) alongside support for workforce training.

## Which Skills Does the Province Say the Industry Needs?

Sustained growth of the advanced aircraft engine industry requires [specialists in advanced design, analysis, materials, manufacturing and test and evaluation](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454), and the province calls securing them essential.

Company-wide job families appear on [Hanwha Aerospace's own careers page](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do), and these are not postings for the new complex. Research and development staff [develop core technologies and next-generation weapon systems](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do) and handle design, prototype building and test evaluation across the development life cycle. Production engineering staff [build the infrastructure for stable mass production of weapon systems](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do), including process design for manufacturing lines, facility investment, layout and BOM management. Quality assurance staff [manage design, incoming, process and market quality](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do) for every product from development through follow-on logistics support.

The same page also describes jobs in [production management, overseas business, domestic business and defense costing](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do), plus finance, legal, purchasing, HR and planning.

## How Does the Graduate Program at Gyeongsang National University Work?

[Gyeongsang National University was selected for the Ministry of Trade and Industry's 2026 specialized graduate school program](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403) in the aerospace and defense field, securing [17.2 billion won including state funding](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub). The province treats it as the first project linked to the hub and plans to train [120 master's and doctoral-level specialists by 2031](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub).

Funding for the program runs [from 2026 to 2031](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403), and the 17.2 billion won total includes [15 billion won in state funding over five years](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403). The university will open [specialized majors in advanced materials and processes, parts and system design, and AI transformation](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403), centered on its aerospace and defense convergence school. It will be linked with [the Gyeongnam Aerospace and Defense Institute of Science and Technology, which was set up through the Glocal University 30 program](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403).

Companies including [Hanwha Aerospace, Korea Aerospace Industries, Doosan Enerbility and SeAH Changwon Integrated Special Steel](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403) plan to take part as a consortium, and industry-academia projects based on company demand and a practice-centered project semester are planned. The province plans to send the program's [master's and doctoral graduates to industrial sites in the province](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403).

## How Do You Apply to Hanwha Aerospace?

These are Hanwha Aerospace's [company-wide hiring steps](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do), not a process set up for the complex. New hires (college graduates and professionals) [submit an application through the Hanwhain website](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do) using the apply button in a new-hire posting. [Document screening checks basic qualifications and a self-introduction essay](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do), then an interview tests job competency, character and organizational fit. Final acceptance comes [after a background check and a health check](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do).

Experienced hires [apply through the Hanwhain website](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do) using the apply button in an experienced-hire posting. Document screening checks [basic qualifications and a job description](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do), and in some cases applicants submit a project description or portfolio in advance. The interview [probes expertise based on job experience](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do), a negotiation on desired rank and salary follows, and final acceptance comes after a background check and a health check.

No shared hiring portal appears in the province's [plan](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454), which backs supplier firms and [training for their employees](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub), so check each employer's own careers page.

## What Is New Here, Compared With Earlier Announcements?

The province posted the selection of Gyeongsang National University for the graduate school on [August 31](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403), before the cluster decision, so the plan to train [120 specialists](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403) is not new with the [September 30 designation](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585211).

What is new is the designation itself. The province began preparing in [August last year and applied in February this year](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub), and the cluster was selected after a subcommittee evaluation and committee deliberation. The original schedule had planned designation for [July 2026](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585211), and it was delayed during deliberations by the subcommittee.

The province, [Changwon City and Gyeongnam Technopark](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub) drew up the plan together with companies and institutions in the province, detailing corporate investment, industry-academia-research cooperation, research and testing infrastructure and workforce training for the evaluation. The vice governor added that the province will bring together companies, universities and research institutions so that [technology development results lead to corporate growth and quality jobs](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

Read the jobs figure as a direction, not a door. It is a [target for 2035](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub) attached to a plan. What is already in place is a [funded graduate school](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403), a named group of employers and a skills list written by the province itself.

Design, analysis, materials, manufacturing and test evaluation are the [areas the province names](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42418454), so put hands-on work in one of them near the top of your [manufacturing resume](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/manufacturing-resume-skills).

Here is what we would do:

- **Check the graduate school first if you are a student.** The program at Gyeongsang National University plans to train [120 master's and doctoral-level specialists by 2031](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub), and companies including [Hanwha Aerospace and Korea Aerospace Industries plan to join its consortium](https://www.gyeongnam.go.kr/board/view.gyeong?boardId=BBS_0000060&menuCd=DOM_000000135002001000&dataSid=42410403).
- **Learn the hiring steps at the anchor employer.** Hanwha Aerospace's [company-wide steps](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do) are application, document screening, interview and final acceptance after background and health checks, with a pay negotiation for experienced hires, who in some cases submit a project description or portfolio.
- **Match your experience to a named job family.** Hanwha's [production engineering role](https://www.hanwhaaerospace.com/eng/careers/recruit.do) covers process design, facility investment, layout and BOM management for weapon system production.
- **Look beyond one company.** The complex holds [43 materials, parts and equipment makers and partner firms](https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/09/30/changwon-named-koreas-first-advanced-aircraft-engine-hub), and the plan backs commercialization at materials and parts companies and the skills of their employees.
- **Watch the national budget next year.** The advanced aircraft engine program is [expected to be promoted next year at a scale of about 5.5 trillion won](https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6585211), subject to its project review and the budget being injected.
