# 300 Channel 4 Jobs Go as Streaming Pressure Reshapes Broadcast Careers

Channel 4 is cutting about 300 jobs, close to a quarter of a workforce that averaged 1,276 last year. What the squeeze means for your next media move.

## What happened

[The Irish News](https://www.irishnews.com/news/uk/channel-4-to-cut-300-jobs-in-one-of-the-biggest-lay-offs-in-its-history-XZCC2V4GNRL35IZTEWDONQK3V4/) reported on 8 September that [Channel 4](https://careers.channel4.com/about-channel-4) is set to cut about 300 jobs, one of the biggest rounds of lay-offs in its 43-year history. The same report puts the expected range at between 300 and 325 staff roles, roughly a quarter of the business, [against an average headcount of 1,276 last year](https://www.irishnews.com/news/uk/channel-4-to-cut-300-jobs-in-one-of-the-biggest-lay-offs-in-its-history-XZCC2V4GNRL35IZTEWDONQK3V4/) taken from the broadcaster's own annual report.

The proportion is what matters here rather than the headline. A cut of 300 at a large employer is a bad quarter. [A cut of 300 against a headcount of 1,276](https://www.irishnews.com/news/uk/channel-4-to-cut-300-jobs-in-one-of-the-biggest-lay-offs-in-its-history-XZCC2V4GNRL35IZTEWDONQK3V4/) is a different organisation on the other side of it.

[The Irish News](https://www.irishnews.com/news/uk/channel-4-to-cut-300-jobs-in-one-of-the-biggest-lay-offs-in-its-history-XZCC2V4GNRL35IZTEWDONQK3V4/) reports about 300 roles going from a workforce that averaged 1,276 last year, close to a quarter of the business.

The trade press had the timing before the confirmation. [Broadcast](https://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/channel-4/channel-4-expected-to-reveal-300-job-cuts-tomorrow/5220187.article) reported the announcement was expected the following day and called it the largest round of layoffs in the public service broadcaster's 43-year operational history. There is precedent inside the same building, since [the broadcaster axed 200 jobs under the previous chief executive nearly two years ago](https://www.irishnews.com/news/uk/channel-4-to-cut-300-jobs-in-one-of-the-biggest-lay-offs-in-its-history-XZCC2V4GNRL35IZTEWDONQK3V4/). A second round this size, this soon, says the first one did not resolve the pressure underneath.

Geography is the clearest signal available. The new chief executive is expected to target London-based roles, following a public promise to grow employee numbers in the nations and regions. That promise is documented. Channel 4's [own careers site](https://careers.channel4.com/about-channel-4) sets out five UK offices built under its 4 All the UK strategy announced in 2018, with Leeds as national headquarters, creative hubs in Glasgow and Bristol, the 4Sales operation in Manchester and the original base at Horseferry Road. Read those together and the exposure map is knowable in advance. A business that has committed to growing outside London, and needs to remove a quarter of its people, has to take that disproportionately from the place it did not promise to grow.

There is a second reading of the geography worth holding alongside the first. A broadcaster that moves work out of London is not only cutting, it is relocating capability, and relocation creates openings even while the headline number is negative. Someone in Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol or Manchester may find that the same reorganisation removing a colleague's job in the capital creates a version of it near them. That does not help anyone facing redundancy this month, but it tells you where to look next, and it explains how a national employer can shrink overall while specific regional teams grow.

The other thing the numbers do not capture is what a quarter means in practice. Removing one person in four does not thin every team evenly. It removes whole layers, merges departments that used to be separate, and hands the people who stay work that two people used to do. Anyone remaining through a reduction this size should expect the job they return to in January to be a different job from the one they have today, with a wider remit and less support around it. That is worth negotiating over while the organisation still wants you, rather than discovering it in February.

## Where the coverage agrees, and where it splits

Every outlet agrees on the number and the scale. The 300 figure, the 43-year framing and the quarter-of-the-business proportion are consistent across [The Irish News](https://www.irishnews.com/news/uk/channel-4-to-cut-300-jobs-in-one-of-the-biggest-lay-offs-in-its-history-XZCC2V4GNRL35IZTEWDONQK3V4/) and [Broadcast](https://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/channel-4/channel-4-expected-to-reveal-300-job-cuts-tomorrow/5220187.article), which both trace it to the same original reporting.

Where it splits is on the company's own account. The broadcaster has not put a number to any of it. Its spokesperson said only that it has been assessing strategic direction, including a review of the structure, shape and size of the organisation, and that it would not comment on speculation. So the figure everyone is reporting is not a figure the employer has confirmed. That gap is worth holding, because a review of shape and size is not the same as a cost trim. Reviews remove whole functions rather than a percentage from every team, and that changes who is exposed.

There is a second, sharper split once you widen out to the sector, and it is a caution about trusting any single write-up. Both [The Irish News](https://www.irishnews.com/news/uk/channel-4-to-cut-300-jobs-in-one-of-the-biggest-lay-offs-in-its-history-XZCC2V4GNRL35IZTEWDONQK3V4/) and [Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/04/16/bbc-plans-to-cut-up-to-2000-jobs-to-save-10-of-annual-budget/) put the BBC programme at [up to 2,000 roles](https://fortune.com/2026/04/16/bbc-plans-to-cut-up-to-2000-jobs-to-save-10-of-annual-budget/), so the headcount is not in dispute. What the accompanying tenth refers to is. One write-up attaches it to the size of the workforce, while [Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/04/16/bbc-plans-to-cut-up-to-2000-jobs-to-save-10-of-annual-budget/) attaches it to the annual budget and is explicit that the target is [500 million pounds of savings](https://fortune.com/2026/04/16/bbc-plans-to-cut-up-to-2000-jobs-to-save-10-of-annual-budget/), with the bulk falling in the financial year beginning 1 April 2027. Those are not the same claim, and a tenth of the people is a very different thing from a tenth of the money. We have left the contested version out for that reason, and if you see it quoted as a workforce cut, check which write-up it came from before you rely on it.

[Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/04/16/bbc-plans-to-cut-up-to-2000-jobs-to-save-10-of-annual-budget/) reports the BBC targeting savings of 500 million pounds, with the bulk of its reductions falling in the financial year beginning 1 April 2027.

On your rights the sources do not split at all, and that is the useful part. [GOV.UK](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay) sets statutory redundancy pay at half a week's pay per full year under 22, one week per full year from 22 to under 41, and one and a half weeks per full year from 41, with [service capped at 20 years, weekly pay capped at 751 pounds and a maximum payment of 22,530 pounds](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay) for redundancies on or after 6 April 2026. [Acas](https://www.acas.org.uk/collective-consultation-redundancy) says employers must start consultation at least 30 days before the first proposed dismissal if there are between 20 and 99 employees, and at least 45 days before if there are 100 or more employees, with nobody dismissed before that period ends, and [a protective award of up to 180 days of full pay](https://www.acas.org.uk/collective-consultation-redundancy) per affected employee where an employer fails to consult properly. A programme of this size sits in the higher band.

## What this means for your job search

Treat this as the moment UK broadcast stopped being a sector you can move around inside. For twenty years the standard recovery from a media redundancy was lateral. You left one broadcaster and landed at another with the same job title. That route is closing, because the two largest employers of broadcast talent in the country are contracting in the same year and neither is hiring the profile the other is releasing.

So the people who will do badly here are the ones who spend three months applying for the job they just lost. The people who will do well are the ones who accept early that their next employer is probably not a broadcaster, and who spend the consultation window translating commissioning, production management, scheduling and audience analytics into the language of streaming platforms, sports rights holders, agencies and in-house brand content teams. The capability transfers cleanly. The vocabulary does not, which is the actual blocker, and [the application keywords that get creative hires noticed](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/application-keywords-get-creative-hires-noticed) is the practical fix for it.

Do the arithmetic before you do anything emotional. Calculate the statutory figure first so any enhanced offer is measured against a real number, then negotiate the parts that are not cash, because notice treatment, outplacement, reference wording and leaving date all sit inside the package and all move before you sign. Then move early, because when several hundred similar CVs from one employer reach the same small pool of UK media recruiters in the same month, timing is worth more than an extra few thousand pounds of severance. Anyone still processing the shock should know that reaction is normal and that [a job loss permanently changes how people think about work](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/getting-laid-off-changes-how-you-think-about-work), which is worth reading before any large decision. The wider market is not closing on you either, and [wage growth and layoff headlines regularly move in opposite directions](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/tech-leads-wage-growth-despite-layoff-headlines) in the same year.

One more practical point about timing. Consultation periods create a natural pause in which most people wait to be told what is happening, and that pause is exactly when the market is emptiest of competition from your own colleagues. The first three weeks after an announcement are the cheapest weeks you will ever have for a search, and almost nobody uses them.

### Q: How many jobs is Channel 4 cutting and how big is that?

A: The broadcaster is expected to cut between 300 and 325 staff roles, which [The Irish News](https://www.irishnews.com/news/uk/channel-4-to-cut-300-jobs-in-one-of-the-biggest-lay-offs-in-its-history-XZCC2V4GNRL35IZTEWDONQK3V4/) reports is around a quarter of the business against an average headcount of 1,276 last year. That makes it one of the biggest rounds of lay-offs in the broadcaster's 43-year history, and larger than the 200 roles removed under the previous chief executive nearly two years ago.

### Q: How much redundancy pay would a Channel 4 employee be entitled to?

A: [Statutory redundancy pay](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay) depends on age and length of service, at half a week's pay per full year under 22, one week per full year aged 22 or older but under 41, and one and a half weeks per full year aged 41 or older. [GOV.UK](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay) counts service for a maximum of 20 years, caps weekly pay at 751 pounds, and sets the maximum statutory payment at 22,530 pounds for redundancies on or after 6 April 2026.

### Q: How long does the consultation have to last?

A: Where 100 or more redundancies are proposed, [Acas](https://www.acas.org.uk/collective-consultation-redundancy) says employers must start consultation at least 45 days before the first proposed dismissal if there are 100 or more employees, and at least 30 days if there are between 20 and 99 employees. Nobody can be dismissed before that period ends even if consultation concludes early, and from 6 April 2026 a failure to consult properly can carry a protective award of up to 180 days of full pay per affected employee.
