# Chewy Targets 50 Million Dollars in AI Savings and What It Signals for Retail Jobs

Chewy expects about 50 million dollars a year in AI savings by fiscal 2027 and a beta assistant already resolves 30% of chats. What it means for agents.

Chewy, the online pet retailer, has put a dollar figure on what AI is worth to its cost base. [CIO Dive](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/) reports that [the pet supplies retailer projects $50 million in annual cost savings due to AI-related initiatives starting in its 2027 fiscal year](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/). At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) we read disclosures like this for what they say about specific jobs, and Chewy was specific about where the AI sits, in customer care, pharmacy, vet clinics and the fulfilment network. This is what the company said, how the trade press read it, and what customer service agents and warehouse workers can do with the information.

## What happened

The figure came from the company's own earnings call. In the [second quarter 2026 call transcript published by The Motley Fool](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/), chief executive Sumit Singh said the company continues [to expect AI related initiatives to generate low-tens of millions of dollars of cost savings in fiscal 2026, scaling to approximately $50 million on an annualized basis in fiscal 2027](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/), and called those benefits [another durable lever within our earnings model](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/).

The results the savings sit on were solid. [The results release carried by Stock Titan](https://www.stocktitan.net/news/CHWY/chewy-announces-second-quarter-2026-financial-9ptpyanpsqo0.html) shows [net sales of $3.33 billion, up 7.3 percent year over year, for the quarter ended August 2, 2026](https://www.stocktitan.net/news/CHWY/chewy-announces-second-quarter-2026-financial-9ptpyanpsqo0.html), and [active customers of 21.705 million against 20.906 million a year earlier, a rise of 3.8%](https://www.stocktitan.net/news/CHWY/chewy-announces-second-quarter-2026-financial-9ptpyanpsqo0.html). The same release quotes Singh describing [growth of 7.3% to $3.33 billion of net sales at the high end of our guidance](https://www.stocktitan.net/news/CHWY/chewy-announces-second-quarter-2026-financial-9ptpyanpsqo0.html). This is a growing company lowering its cost to serve, not a struggling one cutting to survive.

The customer facing assistant is called Cai. [CX Dive](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/) reports that [Cai is still in beta and available to select customers through Chewy's mobile apps](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/), that [it has been active for less than a month](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/), and that [less than 15% of Chewy's traffic has been exposed to Cai](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/). Within that group, Singh said on the call there were [approximately 30% of chats resolved through self-service across common needs such as orders, returns, autoship, and account management](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/). He also said Chewy plans to expand the program rapidly, [according to CX Dive](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/).

> About 30% of chats from the beta group using Chewy's Cai assistant are resolved through self-service across orders, returns, autoship and account management, according to [the second quarter call transcript published by The Motley Fool](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/).

The other deployments are narrower. [CIO Dive](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/) reports that [Chewy launched an AI-powered voice assistant called Callie at some Chewy Vet Care locations to assist with confirming appointments and scheduling follow-ups](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/). In pharmacy, Singh said on the call that [AI is helping automate data extraction and validation while improving review consistency](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/). For the company's own agents, he described [agent facing AI capabilities which are helping transform customer signals into intelligent insights reducing burden on agents, and increasing team member productivity](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/).

Then there is the overhead line. Chief financial officer Christopher Deppe said the company [delivered 70-basis-points of year-over-year SG&A leverage reflecting improved fulfillment center utilization, lower variable cost to serve, disciplined headcount management, and continued productivity gains across the organization](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/). Headcount was one of four reasons, and Deppe added that [lower variable cost to serve remains the largest contributor to SG&A leverage](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/). The transcript summary also records that [50% of shipping volume now flows through automated fulfillment centers, contributing to structural SG&A leverage](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/).

No layoff was announced, and the transcript mentions headcount only once, in that list of overhead drivers. [CIO Dive](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/) quotes Deppe explaining how the automated network and the AI tools work together: [as our automated facilities continue to scale and utilization improves, we are leveraging the fixed cost infrastructure embedded within the network while also reducing variable costs through automation, process improvements and AI-enabled tools](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/).

## Where the coverage agrees, and where it splits

The trade press agrees on the numbers and disagrees on what to look at. [CIO Dive](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/) frames it as infrastructure, reporting that [Chewy spent several quarters building out infrastructure and focusing on the data being right, including crafting a multiagent orchestration framework](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/). It quotes Singh saying [companies will take years to get to this point or they'll essentially have to go out and integrate through third-party providers, where all of our solution is first-party built](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/). It also places Chewy in a wider spending wave, reporting that [enterprises are set to more than double their spending on agentic and generative AI in 2026, according to Gartner data](https://www.ciodive.com/news/chewy-projects-50m-annual-cost-savings-ai/830210/). In that framing the people in the story are engineers.

[CX Dive](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/) looks at the same call and sees the agents. It reports that [one example of cost savings is faster onboarding for customer service agents](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/), with the company [using AI to help agents navigate the various software tools agents browse to find answers](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/), which it says [accelerates the training process for new hires](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/).

> Chewy's internal AI tools are levelling net new agents and their performance much closer to experienced agents, according to [CX Dive's report on the second quarter call](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/).

CX Dive also carries the reason the company gives for wanting that. It reports Singh saying [these AI-driven efficiencies can help offset cost pressures such as wage inflation](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/), and that the savings are expected to [create flexibility in how it reinvests cost savings](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/). For anyone who works in customer service, that pairing matters more than the headline number. The company is telling investors that faster onboarding and closer performance between new and experienced agents are part of how it expects to absorb rising wages.

The split on human support is narrower than it looks. [CX Dive](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/) reports that [live agents will remain part of customer support](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/), and the transcript records Singh saying that [customers who prefer or require human support are seamlessly connected to a care team member within seconds](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/). Both outlets report the same commitment, and neither reports a cut to agent numbers.

The federal outlook for the occupation points the same way as Chewy's design. The [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/office-and-administrative-support/customer-service-representatives.htm) projects that [employment of customer service representatives is projected to decline 5 percent from 2025 to 2035](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/office-and-administrative-support/customer-service-representatives.htm), and says [there is expected to be less demand for customer service representatives, especially in retail trade, as their tasks continue to be automated](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/office-and-administrative-support/customer-service-representatives.htm). The same BLS page adds that [some companies will continue to use in-house service centers to differentiate themselves from competitors, particularly for complex inquiries such as refunding accounts or confirming insurance coverage](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/office-and-administrative-support/customer-service-representatives.htm).

A related argument comes from HR. A [SHRM Advisor blog post](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers) about HR teams argues that the organizations gaining the most from HR AI automation are those [where people understand processes well enough to direct the tools](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers), and that human expertise matters most in [tailoring workflows, ensuring robust data quality, and guiding exception management](https://www.shrm.org/in/topics-tools/news/why-process-pros-are-the-new-ai-value-drivers). Chewy's own description of Cai, resolving common requests and passing people who want a human to a care team member, follows the same division of work.

## What this means for your job search

If you work in customer service, the useful reading of this call is about which tasks move first. The chats Chewy says Cai resolves are [orders, returns, autoship, and account management](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/), the routine requests. The BLS points to [complex inquiries such as refunding accounts or confirming insurance coverage](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/office-and-administrative-support/customer-service-representatives.htm) as the work companies keep in-house. Build your record around that second group. Track the escalations you resolve, the refunds and exceptions you handle, and the customers you keep, and bring those numbers to your next review.

Take the levelling comment seriously as well. When a chief executive says new agents now perform [much closer to our experienced agents](https://www.customerexperiencedive.com/news/chewy-beta-ai-assistant-solving-common-customer-issues/829948/), the practical question for an experienced agent is which of their skills a tool cannot hand to a new hire in onboarding. Escalation handling, quality review, training and the design of what happens when the assistant hands a customer back are the obvious candidates. We looked at [when experienced customer service reps earn more and when they do not](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/customer-service-reps-salary-premium-2026), and at [which customer service skills transfer to better paid roles](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/customer-service-transferable-skills). If you want to step sideways, [roles that look like customer service but pay and demand more](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/roles-beyond-customer-service) is a good starting list. The wider pattern of [AI shrinking raises rather than removing jobs](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/ai-wage-compression-58-million-workers-2026) is worth reading alongside it.

There is still demand for the work. The BLS expects [about 289,500 openings for customer service representatives each year, on average, over the decade](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/office-and-administrative-support/customer-service-representatives.htm), all of them from the need to replace workers who move on or retire, and it lists [2025 median pay of $44,770 per year](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/office-and-administrative-support/customer-service-representatives.htm). Not every company that tried AI agents kept them either, as our look at [companies pulling their AI customer bots](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/74-percent-enterprises-rolled-back-ai-customer-agents-sinch-2026) shows.

If you work in fulfilment, watch the automation share. Chewy says [50% of shipping volume now flows through automated fulfillment centers](https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2026/09/09/chewy-chwy-q2-2026-earnings-call-transcript/). Across the country, the BLS counts [6,917,800 hand laborer and material mover jobs in 2025](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/hand-laborers-and-material-movers.htm), with [retail trade the largest employer at 35%](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/hand-laborers-and-material-movers.htm), and projects that [overall employment of hand laborers and material movers is projected to grow 4 percent from 2025 to 2035](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/hand-laborers-and-material-movers.htm). The faster growth sits with the people who keep automated sites running. The BLS projects [industrial machinery mechanics, machinery maintenance workers, and millwrights to grow 14 percent from 2025 to 2035](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/industrial-machinery-mechanics-and-maintenance-workers-and-millwrights.htm), and says [the use of automated conveyors to move products and materials in factories is likely to be an area of high demand for these workers](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/industrial-machinery-mechanics-and-maintenance-workers-and-millwrights.htm).

The pay gap between those two groups is the case for moving. The BLS lists [2025 median pay of $38,220 per year for hand laborers and material movers](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/hand-laborers-and-material-movers.htm) and [2025 median pay of $64,100 per year for industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/industrial-machinery-mechanics-and-maintenance-workers-and-millwrights.htm). If your employer runs automated sites, ask what maintenance or systems training it offers, and read what an [automation and controls technician does](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/automation-and-controls-technician). The same shift is showing up at [Amazon's robot-heavy warehouse network](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/amazon-1-million-robots-600000-warehouse-jobs-workers-2026) and in back offices, where [Amazon has moved HR questions to a chatbot](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/amazon-ai-hr-chatbot-aza-workers-2026).

The last practical point is about where to take that experience. A contact centre agent who has worked alongside an AI assistant, handled the requests it passed back, and can explain where it falls short has a skill set that retailers deploying the same tools will need. Put that on your resume in plain terms, with the volumes and outcomes attached.
