# Stephen Colbert Used His Emmy to Ask Hollywood to Hire His 200 Laid-Off Late Show Staff

About 200 Late Show staff lost their jobs when CBS ended the show in May. Colbert used his Emmy to ask Hollywood to hire them. How to turn a plea into work.

Stephen Colbert won an Emmy on Monday night and used the microphone for something bosses almost never do in public, a job reference for his entire former staff. [TheWrap reports](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/) that Colbert thanked [the over 200 people who worked on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for the past 11 years](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/) and then gave the room two short sentences, [They are all tech avail. Hire them.](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/) Those workers have been out of a job since the final episode aired on [May 21, as NPR reported](https://www.npr.org/2026/05/12/nx-s1-5819155/colbert-late-night-hosts-strike-again). At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) we cover layoffs from the worker's side, and the short answer is this. A public referral opens doors, but only for people who walk through them quickly with a clear pitch about what they built.

## What happened

The job losses were announced long before they landed. [The CBS News report on the decision](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/) said the network would end the show and [retire The Late Show franchise in May 2026](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/), calling it [purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/). Colbert broke the news to his own studio audience during a taping, and in that same report he said he was [extraordinarily, deeply grateful to the 200 people who work here](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/). [Variety described the workforce](https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356/) as [the 200 or so staffers who work on his program](https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356/), and reported that Colbert had learned of the decision only the evening before he told the audience.

[NPR's report on the announcement](https://www.npr.org/2025/07/17/nx-s1-5471581/cbs-stephen-colbert-late-show) noted that Colbert had [hosted the top-rated show since 2015](https://www.npr.org/2025/07/17/nx-s1-5471581/cbs-stephen-colbert-late-show), taking over from David Letterman, and that the news was delivered to a live audience at [New York's Ed Sullivan Theater](https://www.npr.org/2025/07/17/nx-s1-5471581/cbs-stephen-colbert-late-show). That location matters for the workers, because it tells you which state's unemployment system most of them were filing into once the paychecks stopped.

The business case behind the cut was about the whole format, not one show. [Variety's coverage](https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356/) said the economics of late night TV have been deteriorating, with media companies [growing wary of the high price tags involved in producing the shows](https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356/) while the young viewers they try to attract watch more of them as digital video. The same report noted that CBS had already cancelled After Midnight, the companion program that aired after the Late Show, and that none of the regular late night hosts still work Fridays. [CinemaBlend's analysis of the final staff photo](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/final-pic-late-show-staff-shows-how-many-people-lost-jobs-cbs-claim-millions-losses) put numbers on that squeeze, citing CinemaBlend's own earlier reporting that late night garnered [$439 million in earnings back in 2018 and only $220 million by 2024](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/final-pic-late-show-staff-shows-how-many-people-lost-jobs-cbs-claim-millions-losses). When the earnings of a whole category halve, the jobs inside it do not simply move to a rival show down the street.

The staff did get a long runway. [The Gold Derby report](https://www.goldderby.com/tv/2026/stephen-colbert-emmys-2026-wins-the-late-show/) says the network [gave the producers a full year to prepare for the ending](https://www.goldderby.com/tv/2026/stephen-colbert-emmys-2026-wins-the-late-show/), and the final episodes aired this May. One of the last weeks brought back Colbert's fellow late night hosts, and [NPR's coverage of that reunion](https://www.npr.org/2026/05/12/nx-s1-5819155/colbert-late-night-hosts-strike-again) explained that their Strike Force Five podcast began while they were [on strike with the Writers Guild of America against major studios in 2023](https://www.npr.org/2026/05/12/nx-s1-5819155/colbert-late-night-hosts-strike-again). It ran for [12 episodes, with proceeds going to the staffers](https://www.npr.org/2026/05/12/nx-s1-5819155/colbert-late-night-hosts-strike-again) of the five hosts' shows. That detail is worth holding onto, because it shows these hosts have treated their crews as a shared responsibility before.

What the staff faced at the very end is the part that will feel familiar to anyone who has been laid off. On the revived podcast, Colbert said nobody would have a job after the final night and that the staff all had to be gone, and [reporting at The Daily Beast](https://www.thedailybeast.com/obsessed/colbert-reveals-final-insult-from-cbs-after-brutal-firing/) quotes him saying everyone had to be out [by the next Friday](https://www.thedailybeast.com/obsessed/colbert-reveals-final-insult-from-cbs-after-brutal-firing/). He added that he had already packed his own office.

> Colbert said his staff would not be paid [like the next day](https://www.thedailybeast.com/obsessed/colbert-reveals-final-insult-from-cbs-after-brutal-firing/) after the final episode, according to The Daily Beast.

[CinemaBlend's account of the same podcast](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/stephen-colbert-how-long-staff-leave-late-show-offices-cbs-ending) adds that Colbert himself would get [a week to collect his personal belongings](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/stephen-colbert-how-long-staff-leave-late-show-offices-cbs-ending), while John Oliver was shocked that the final day of pay was the end of the final show, which seemed to leave some staff clearing out their spaces on unpaid time. The outlet noted the crew would still get more time than the people on David Letterman's version of the show, where most of the set was recalled as going into the dumpster the very next day. The two write-ups of the same podcast frame the exit timing differently. The Daily Beast has Colbert saying they all had to be out by the next Friday, while CinemaBlend describes the host getting a week for his own belongings and his colleagues having to move a lot faster, so staff may have had less time to clear out than Colbert did.

Then came the Emmys. [The Gold Derby report](https://www.goldderby.com/tv/2026/stephen-colbert-emmys-2026-wins-the-late-show/) says The Late Show won Best Variety Series [for the second and final time](https://www.goldderby.com/tv/2026/stephen-colbert-emmys-2026-wins-the-late-show/), with [six farewell trophies](https://www.goldderby.com/tv/2026/stephen-colbert-emmys-2026-wins-the-late-show/) across series, directing, writing, lighting design, picture editing and technical direction. Read that list as a job seeker would. Every one of those categories is a craft practised by people who are now looking for work.

Colbert's pitch on stage was specific rather than sentimental. He opened by telling the room that [if you like the comedy tonight, my old writers wrote it](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/), a pointed reminder that his writers were already working the ceremony. He then described late shows as [a fantastic incubator for young people to come in to learn to work professionally on a deadline](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/), and called that pipeline the future of the business.

> Colbert told Hollywood that his former staff [will make your show better, and they will make your day easier](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/), according to TheWrap.

## Where the coverage agrees, and where it splits

The outlets reviewed here put the size of the loss in the same range, though the wording shifts from report to report. [The CBS News report](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/) quotes Colbert thanking [the 200 people who work here](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/), [Variety wrote of 200 or so staffers](https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356/), and [TheWrap wrote of over 200 people](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/). None of the outlets gives an exact final headcount, so treat the figure as a round number rather than a payroll count. The outlets also agree that the ending ran on a published schedule, with [CinemaBlend confirming the final show aired May 21st](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/stephen-colbert-how-long-staff-leave-late-show-offices-cbs-ending).

The coverage splits on how much warning the workers really had. [The Gold Derby report](https://www.goldderby.com/tv/2026/stephen-colbert-emmys-2026-wins-the-late-show/) says the producers got [a full year to prepare](https://www.goldderby.com/tv/2026/stephen-colbert-emmys-2026-wins-the-late-show/), and [TheWrap points to the months-long runway](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/) the show had to wind down. The network's own words were narrower, since [the CBS statement promised to celebrate the show over the next 10 months](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/). A year sounds generous. A final season of full daily production, with no let-up in the workload, leaves far less time to job hunt than the headline suggests.

It also splits on how the exit was handled. CBS's own position, in [the statement published by CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/), is that the ending was purely a financial decision, and [TheWrap's recap of that defense](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/) says the network pointed to the large cost of late night shows compared to their dwindling viewership. [CinemaBlend's staff photo analysis](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/final-pic-late-show-staff-shows-how-many-people-lost-jobs-cbs-claim-millions-losses) argues the rush out of the building felt more like a firing than a farewell, and cites insiders who said the show was losing money left and right. [Reporting at The Daily Beast](https://www.thedailybeast.com/obsessed/colbert-reveals-final-insult-from-cbs-after-brutal-firing/) cites insider reports that the show was [losing CBS $40 million a year](https://www.thedailybeast.com/obsessed/colbert-reveals-final-insult-from-cbs-after-brutal-firing/), a figure a fellow host dismissed as nonsensical. Some coverage also questions whether money was the whole story. That debate is real, but it does not change a single practical step for the people who lost their jobs, so we leave it aside here.

One line in the network's own statement, printed by Variety as well as CBS News, matters more for every resume that came out of that building than the debate over motive. [The CBS News report](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/) published the statement saying the ending was [not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/), and noting that at the time of the July 2025 announcement the show had been [No. 1 in late night for nine straight seasons](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/). For a laid-off worker, that is an employer-issued, on-the-record reason for the job loss that has nothing to do with the quality of their work. Workers bracing for [the job fallout from the Paramount and Warner Bros merger](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/paramount-warner-bros-merger-halt-media-jobs) should look for the same kind of written reason in their own layoff paperwork and keep a copy.

Colbert's own words on the day he announced the ending are worth rereading too. In the same report he called it [a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/). Taken together with the Emmy speech, it frames the loss as the disappearance of a training ground, not just a paycheck, which is the most useful way for his former staff to describe their experience to the next employer.

## What this means for your job search

Our take is that Colbert handed his staff the most valuable thing a laid-off worker can get, and that it has a short shelf life. A public, specific referral from a well-known former boss gets emails opened and calls returned, but only while the moment is fresh. The workers who benefit will be the ones who treat the speech as a warm introduction and follow up this week with something concrete, not the ones who wait for a producer to call.

Start by borrowing your former boss's words. Colbert said late shows are [a fantastic incubator for young people](https://www.thewrap.com/industry-news/awards/stephen-colbert-emmys-speech-2026/) to learn to work professionally on a deadline, in cooperation and in collaboration, and you came up through one. That is a pitch you can quote in the first line of an outreach note, followed by one sentence on your role and one on the kind of show or project you want next. If you are unsure how to keep those notes short enough to get a reply, a guide to [writing networking messages that get replies](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/networking-messages-with-ai-that-get-replies) is a practical template for the structure.

Next, build your portfolio around the credit, not the job title. The show took [six farewell trophies](https://www.goldderby.com/tv/2026/stephen-colbert-emmys-2026-wins-the-late-show/) in craft categories that include writing, directing, lighting design, picture editing and technical direction. If you worked on those episodes, name the segments, the pieces you cut, the rigs you lit or the sketches you pitched. A reel or a writing sample tied to an Emmy-winning season is far easier for a hiring producer to evaluate than a line on a resume, and it travels outside television too.

Use the employer's own statement to answer the question every interviewer will ask. The network said the ending was [not related in any way to the show's performance](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/). When someone asks why you left, you do not need to explain late night economics or relitigate the decision. You can say the network retired the franchise, the show was [No. 1 in late night for nine straight seasons](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-late-show-stephen-colbert-end-may-2026/) when the ending was announced in July 2025, and you are ready for the next production. Keep it to two sentences and move straight to what you can do for them.

Widen the target list beyond late night. Variety's reporting on [the high price tags involved in producing the shows](https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356/) is a warning that the same squeeze is hitting every show in the category, so the number of comparable seats is shrinking. The skills from a daily show transfer to live sports and news broadcasts, streaming and digital studios, podcasts, live events, awards production and corporate video, all of which need people who can ship something good every day. Writers can check current pay expectations in [what television writers make and how WGA minimums shape the range](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/how-much-do-television-writers-make) before they negotiate a first freelance deal.

Work the network you already have. The hosts behind Strike Force Five sent [proceeds going to the staffers](https://www.npr.org/2026/05/12/nx-s1-5819155/colbert-late-night-hosts-strike-again) of five shows during the 2023 strike, which tells you former colleagues at other late night programs already see crews as a shared community. A laid-off group as large as [the 200 or so staffers Variety counted](https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/cbs-cancel-late-show-stephen-colbert-financial-decision-1236464356/) is itself a network, spread across writing rooms, control rooms and edit bays. Agree now to pass along every lead that does not fit you, because the next job for one person is often the one a former colleague turned down.

Do not let the referral distract you from the money. [CinemaBlend reported](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/stephen-colbert-how-long-staff-leave-late-show-offices-cbs-ending) that John Oliver was shocked the final day of pay was [the end of the final show](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/stephen-colbert-how-long-staff-leave-late-show-offices-cbs-ending), so there was no paid cushion. If you worked in New York, file for unemployment as soon as your pay stops, and check whether any severance or outplacement support was offered, since the details in [how outplacement and severance packages can be negotiated](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/what-is-outplacement-severance-package-negotiate-2026) apply to production staff too.

> New York's maximum unemployment benefit rate is [$869 per week](https://dol.ny.gov/mbr), according to the New York State Department of Labor.

The [New York State Department of Labor](https://dol.ny.gov/mbr) says the amount any individual receives is [based on their previous income](https://dol.ny.gov/mbr), so a staffer on a steady network salary may be close to that ceiling while a freelancer paid per episode may not be. Keep records of every application and interview, because the department provides a [Work Search Record Sheet](https://dol.ny.gov/unemployment/unemployment-insurance-assistance) for exactly that purpose. If a claim is denied, the [department's unemployment assistance page](https://dol.ny.gov/unemployment/unemployment-insurance-assistance) says you may [request a hearing within 30 days from the date of the determination](https://dol.ny.gov/unemployment/unemployment-insurance-assistance). Many people skip that step, and our look at [why laid-off workers skip filing for unemployment](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/why-laid-off-workers-skip-filing-unemployment-2026) shows how much money that leaves on the table.

The lesson reaches well past Hollywood. Most laid-off workers never get a boss standing on a stage asking the industry to hire them, but almost every former manager is willing to write a specific recommendation, make an introduction or post a note about the team if someone asks. Ask for it directly, ask for it early, and ask for it in words that describe what you did rather than how sorry they are. Colbert's speech worked because it was concrete, and your referral will work for the same reason.
