The Cornwall award sits alongside a second lithium project in the North East. [Tees Valley Lithium has a £185 million plan](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-lithium-mine-in-cornwall-to-unlock-britains-industrial-potential-and-support-skilled-jobs) for a refinery in Teesside, backed by its own Offer in Principle of £18.3 million, and the two projects together unlock nearly £230 million of private investment.

There are two separate numbers, and they describe different kinds of work. That is a guide to the kinds of firms involved in the past, not a promise of who will win work on the new plant.

## When Will GEL Actually Start Hiring for the Plant?

The announcement does not give a hiring timeline. What it does give is a production date, and commercial production on the Cornwall project is set to begin in [2029](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-lithium-mine-in-cornwall-to-unlock-britains-industrial-potential-and-support-skilled-jobs). The next phase on the company's project page is a [fully commercial lithium extraction plant by 2029](https://gel.energy/projects/united-downs-lithium-demonstration-plant/).

That makes this a pipeline story rather than a jobs-open-today story. The release does not set out when or how the [nearly 50 direct roles](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-lithium-mine-in-cornwall-to-unlock-britains-industrial-potential-and-support-skilled-jobs) will be filled.

At the time of writing, the [company's careers page](https://gel.energy/careers/) listed a single role, an Operations Manager post, marked closed. That listing was [advertised on 7th September 2026](https://gel.energy/job/operations-manager/) and closed on 20 September 2026, a week before the plant news.

## What Roles Does a Geothermal Lithium Plant Actually Hire?

GEL answers this on its own site, and the list goes well beyond scientists. Geologists and lab technicians play an important role, but the workforce also needs [engineers, plant operators, community engagement staff](https://gel.energy/green-energy-growth-creates-pathways-for-jobs-skills-and-innovation/), environmental specialists, data analysts and communications professionals.

The lithium team, as described in August, shows the science side in detail. It includes a [Laboratory Technician, two Process Scientists and a Lithium & Process Manager](https://gel.energy/growing-the-gel-team-to-support-the-future-of-lithium-extraction-in-cornwall/), and their backgrounds are in chemistry, physics and forensic science rather than one fixed degree. A hire made public in August was [a recent chemistry graduate from Cornwall](https://gel.energy/growing-the-gel-team-to-support-the-future-of-lithium-extraction-in-cornwall/), taken on to help develop and optimise the extraction process.

On the operations side, the most recent listing adds detail. GEL described the power plant as [moving from commissioning into full operations](https://gel.energy/job/operations-manager/), and it created the Operations Manager role to take full ownership of plant operations, safety and team development as it plans for multi-site expansion.

The company also points to skills from outside the sector. On its about page, the skills, technology and expertise of the [UK oil and gas industry](https://gel.energy/about/about-us/) are named as having the potential to play a significant role in a growing geothermal sector.

## How Do You Apply for a Job at GEL?

The application route is set out on the job listing itself. For the Operations Manager role, candidates were asked to send a [CV and cover letter by email](https://gel.energy/job/operations-manager/) to the company's careers inbox, with the job title in the subject line, and interviews were to follow.

That listing, on the [GEL careers page](https://gel.energy/careers/), carried a closing date and a downloadable job description, so that page is the place to watch for the next role.

## What Does GEL Pay, and What Else Does It Offer?

The announcement gives no salaries for the new roles, and the Operations Manager listing does not print a pay figure in its text. What the company does commit to is a pay floor. In June 2026 GEL became a [Real Living Wage accredited employer](https://gel.energy/gel-strengthens-esg-commitment-with-real-living-wage-accreditation-2/), formalising a commitment to paying above the Real Living Wage.

The accreditation adds to the company's work with the [Disability Confident scheme](https://gel.energy/gel-strengthens-esg-commitment-with-real-living-wage-accreditation-2/), and the [careers page](https://gel.energy/careers/) mentions development programmes and incentive schemes. The page does not spell out what those schemes include.

## Is There a Training Route In If You Have No Lab Experience?

There is a new local route, though the college announcement does not list entry requirements. [Truro and Penwith College](https://www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/events-information/news/new-apprenticeship-supports-cornwalls-251-6-billion-minerals-market-ambitions/) has built a new [Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship](https://www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/events-information/news/new-apprenticeship-supports-cornwalls-251-6-billion-minerals-market-ambitions/) with employers to answer the sector's skills gaps. GEL names that apprenticeship on its own site as an example of [industry and education working together](https://gel.energy/green-energy-growth-creates-pathways-for-jobs-skills-and-innovation/) to build a talent pool.

Apprentices on the course are trained to perform [high-quality testing and analysis](https://www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/events-information/news/new-apprenticeship-supports-cornwalls-251-6-billion-minerals-market-ambitions/), work within regulatory requirements and use specialist instruments and equipment. Delivery was set to begin from September, in a college announcement dated [12 February 2026](https://www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/events-information/news/new-apprenticeship-supports-cornwalls-251-6-billion-minerals-market-ambitions/).

The route is not only for geothermal work. A director at the Redruth lab firm [Petrolab](https://www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/events-information/news/new-apprenticeship-supports-cornwalls-251-6-billion-minerals-market-ambitions/) sees the skills giving candidates opportunities across the industry, from mining and mineral processing to geothermal energy. The [Cornwall Mining and Geo-Resources Alliance](https://www.truro-penwith.ac.uk/events-information/news/new-apprenticeship-supports-cornwalls-251-6-billion-minerals-market-ambitions/) called it a timely and much-needed initiative for the mining, minerals and geothermal industries.

## How Far Along Is the Lithium Project Already?

This is not a plant starting from nothing. GEL opened its [Lithium Demonstration Plant in February 2026](https://gel.energy/projects/united-downs-lithium-demonstration-plant/) on the same site as its geothermal power plant, and that facility can produce [up to 100 tonnes of lithium carbonate a year](https://gel.energy/how-gel-is-helping-secure-britains-lithium-supply-chain/).

Samples from the production well have recorded [lithium concentrations of over 350 ppm](https://gel.energy/projects/united-downs-lithium-demonstration-plant/), which the company calls one of the highest recorded in the world. On 2nd September 2026, GEL published independent analysis showing its lithium carbonate [exceeds the 99.3% purity specification](https://gel.energy/gel-set-to-deliver-europes-first-technical-grade-lithium-carbonate-on-a-commercial-scale/) for technical grade material, which means it can be sold to battery producers without further refining.

The reference price for this grade, on the company's figures, was [approximately $22,000 a tonne](https://gel.energy/gel-set-to-deliver-europes-first-technical-grade-lithium-carbonate-on-a-commercial-scale/) on the Shanghai Metals Market, as of August 20, 2026.

## What Is New Compared With Earlier Funding?

DRIVE35 is the government's flagship automotive programme, providing [£4 billion to 2035 in capital and R&D grant funding](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-lithium-mine-in-cornwall-to-unlock-britains-industrial-potential-and-support-skilled-jobs), and it has backed GEL before. On 2nd September 2026, the [Advanced Propulsion Centre](https://gel.energy/gel-set-to-deliver-europes-first-technical-grade-lithium-carbonate-on-a-commercial-scale/), which delivers DRIVE35 for the government, put its earlier support for the demonstration project at a [£1.8 million grant](https://gel.energy/gel-set-to-deliver-europes-first-technical-grade-lithium-carbonate-on-a-commercial-scale/) through the Automotive Transformation Fund.

The new offer is larger and aimed at the next stage. The [nearly £10 million Offer in Principle](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-lithium-mine-in-cornwall-to-unlock-britains-industrial-potential-and-support-skilled-jobs) supports the commercial facility itself, alongside around £43 million from GEL, and the job figures come with this new award. The DRIVE35 offers to GEL and Tees Valley Lithium [remain subject to completion of due diligence and final approvals](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-lithium-mine-in-cornwall-to-unlock-britains-industrial-potential-and-support-skilled-jobs).

The award also comes in a month that the government says has brought [£1 billion of investment](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-lithium-mine-in-cornwall-to-unlock-britains-industrial-potential-and-support-skilled-jobs) for UK car making from Bentley, [McLaren](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/mclaren-uk-engines-1000-jobs) and Nissan.

## Why Is the UK Backing Lithium in Cornwall at All?

Demand is the short answer. Demand for lithium is expected to increase by [1,100% by 2035](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-lithium-mine-in-cornwall-to-unlock-britains-industrial-potential-and-support-skilled-jobs), and the metal is essential for electric vehicle batteries.

The government set its targets in the Vision 2035 plan, published in [November 2025](https://www.thechemicalengineer.com/news/uk-publishes-critical-minerals-strategy-2035). By 2035 it wants [at least 10% of annual demand](https://www.thechemicalengineer.com/news/uk-publishes-critical-minerals-strategy-2035) for critical minerals to come from domestic production, and it aims to produce at least 50,000 tonnes of lithium or lithium carbonate equivalent at home.

GEL's own long-term ambition is to produce up to [30,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate each year by 2033](https://gel.energy/how-gel-is-helping-secure-britains-lithium-supply-chain/) as more sites come online. That is the company's own target, and the new award is for the Cornwall facility.

Our take is that this is a real but slow jobs story.
