Richard Houston, [Deloitte's former UK chief executive](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197), received [a 45 percent pay rise to £7.1 million in the last financial year](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197) (about $9.5 million), up from [£4.9 million he was paid in 2025](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/) (about $6.54 million). In the same year the firm [cut around 1,000 UK jobs](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197) and [its average UK headcount fell](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/), while the firm's [latest UK financial results](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) showed profit up and a bigger bonus pool for staff. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers in audit, tax, consulting and finance, this guide sets out how the top pay package was built, what the job cuts and headcount figures actually measure, what ordinary staff received in bonuses and raises, where Deloitte is still hiring, and what UK redundancy rules say about pay and rights.

## How Was Richard Houston's £7.1 Million (About $9.5 Million) Pay Package Made Up?

Houston received [£5.8 million in profit distributions alongside the £1.3 million one-off award](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197) (about $7.7 million and about $1.7 million), for the [year ending May 2026](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197).

The one-off element was a [one-off award granted under a long term incentive plan by Deloitte's North and South Europe (NSE) board](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/), and the award carried [a number of strategic and financial performance metrics, including for his work for the firm's broader operations in Europe](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/).

Houston became [the highest-paid UK chief executive among the Big Four accounting firms](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197), according to the Financial Times.

## Who Leads Deloitte UK Now?

He [led Deloitte's UK business for seven years](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/) and [became CEO of the newly launched EMEA firm](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) in June. That new organisation [oversees the firm's activities across more than 80 countries](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197), following [a restructuring this year which he led](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/).

[Darren Graves was appointed CEO of Deloitte UK in June, with Jane Whitlock becoming Chair of the UK Board](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html), and Hayley McKelvey joined the UK Executive as [Chief AI Officer, responsible for driving the firm's AI strategy across client services and internal operations](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html).

## How Does His Pay Compare With a Typical Deloitte UK Employee?

Houston's total earnings were [93 times the median pay of Deloitte's UK employees, compared with 65 times the previous year](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197).

## How Far Did Deloitte UK's Headcount Fall, and Were There Job Cuts?

[Average employee numbers at Deloitte's UK limited liability partnership fell by 1,360, from 17,264 to 15,904](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197), a fall taken from [Deloitte's latest Companies House filings](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/). Separately, the firm [cut around 1,000 UK jobs during the financial year](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197), according to HRreview.

The fall in average headcount [shouldn't be interpreted as the number of employees made redundant](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197). The fall was [in part tied to targeted job cuts](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/).

Deloitte [subsequently offered voluntary redundancy arrangements affecting parts of its audit and assurance operation](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197). The offer was made on enhanced terms to some staff, [less than 3% of its A&A business](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html), [due to low rates of attrition in certain areas of the business](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html), and with that June offer the firm [sought to cut nearly 200 jobs across its audit business in the UK](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/).

> We have taken the decision to offer voluntary redundancy on enhanced terms to some of our people in the impacted areas. We do not take these decisions lightly and will do everything we can to provide support to those who are considering this option, a Deloitte UK spokesperson said in June, according to [the Business News report](https://www.business-news.org.uk/deloitte-hikes-pay-for-top-boss-while-headcount-shrinks/).

A year earlier, Houston said the firm had needed "[to review and make changes to the shape of our firm](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html)". That year, a review of UK internal services teams raised the prospect of [job cuts, particularly in business development and marketing roles](https://www.internationalaccountingbulletin.com/news/deloitte-uk-job-cuts/), Bloomberg reported.

## How Did Deloitte UK Perform in the Year to May 2026?

Revenue [rose 2% to £5.81 billion (FY25: £5.68 billion)](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) (about $7.8 billion, against about $7.6 billion), a figure that covers [its UK and Swiss operations](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197). A year earlier the firm had [a 1% fall in revenue in 2025, its first decline since 2010](https://www.internationalaccountingbulletin.com/news/deloitte-uk-to-raise-bonuses-and-salaries/).

The firm saw [growth across all its UK businesses](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html), at different speeds:

- [Technology & Transformation revenue increased 4% to £1.75 billion](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) (about $2.3 billion), on demand for ERP implementation, Cyber and Human Capital services.
- [Audit & Assurance delivered growth of 3% to £998m](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) (about $1.33 billion).
- [Tax & Legal revenues increased by 2% to £1.36 billion](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) (about $1.8 billion).
- [Strategy, Risk & Transactions Advisory delivered 1% revenue growth to £913m](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) (about $1.22 billion), with [gains made in Strategic Value Creation, AI Advisory and Valuations & Modelling](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html).

In the prior year, Technology & Transformation saw [revenue contracting 10%, from £1.86 billion in FY24 to £1.67 billion](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html) (about $2.5 billion and about $2.2 billion), as [clients held back investments in large scale change programmes](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html).

Distributable profit [increased 14 percent to £899 million for the year ending 31 May 2026, up from £789 million the previous year](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197) (about $1.2 billion, against about $1.05 billion), and technology investment rose to [£180m in FY26 vs £158m in FY25](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) (about $240 million against about $211 million).

> We saw an increase in revenue across all our UK businesses and were pleased that our advisory businesses returned to profitable growth, with higher demand for enterprise technology services, including supporting clients with their AI adoption and scaling strategies, Deloitte UK chief executive Darren Graves said, according to [the Deloitte UK 2026 financial results](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html).

## What Did Deloitte UK Partners Earn?

Average profit per equity partner [increased 7% to £1.125 million (FY25: £1.051 million)](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) (about $1.5 million, against about $1.4 million).

[Equity partner numbers increased by 6.5% to 784, the highest annual total in Deloitte UK's history](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html), with [48 people promoted to partner, alongside 68 salaried partners who were converted to equity](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html).

Deloitte has reportedly cut [the initial profit-sharing allocation for newly promoted equity partners from 100 units to 80](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197), part of a wider change to partnership reward. The change to partner units differs from [the equity cuts for some KPMG and EY partners](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/kpmg-ey-partner-demotions-end-job-for-life). For comparison, the 2025 results showed [77 people converted from salaried to equity partner](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html), nearly three times the 29 the year before.

## What Did Ordinary Deloitte Staff Get From the Results?

Deloitte increased its [bonus pool by 14%, with average salaries in-grade rising by an average of over 4%](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html), and invested [£305 million in reward](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) (about $407 million).

Ahead of the new financial year, Houston told staff by email that [average salaries are due to increase by 4.2%, compared with 2.9% last year](https://www.internationalaccountingbulletin.com/news/deloitte-uk-to-raise-bonuses-and-salaries/), and that the firm expected to [surpass its profit plan for the current financial year](https://www.internationalaccountingbulletin.com/news/deloitte-uk-to-raise-bonuses-and-salaries/), the Financial Times reported. The year before, his staff email had said Deloitte would [make fewer promotions, lower the average salary increase and reduce bonuses in its consulting division by 20%](https://www.internationalaccountingbulletin.com/news/deloitte-uk-to-raise-bonuses-and-salaries/) after profits in that business fell short.

[Over 6,000 of its 25,000 UK people were promoted](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) in the year. In the 2025 results, [5,500 of 26,000 UK people were promoted](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html).

The hiring and promotion numbers [cover the wider UK business and don't directly correspond to the employee numbers for Deloitte LLP](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197).

## Is Deloitte UK Hiring Graduates and Experienced Staff?

Yes. In its latest financial year the firm made [3,500 new hires in the UK, including more than 1,950 graduates, apprentices and interns](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html), against [3,160 new people in the UK, including more than 1,900 graduates, apprentices and interns](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html) the year before. Hiring went to [areas of growth](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) while costs were managed carefully.

The [Deloitte UK early careers programmes](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/careers/early-careers.html) cover candidates whether [you're leaving school after your GCSEs or you've got a postgraduate degree](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/careers/early-careers.html), across technology, audit, legal services and consulting. In the year ended 31 May 2025, Deloitte UK [introduced 26 weeks fully paid family leave for all new parents](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html). In the latest year, [85% of non-birthing parents took up the new family leave policy, taking the full 26 weeks](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html).

[Nearly 12,000 staff flexed their public holidays](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) in the year. Training spend was [over £64m in learning and development](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html) (about $85.4 million) in the 2025 financial year.

Deloitte's Midlands business was due to [relocate to One Centenary Way in Birmingham in October](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html), following [new offices in Aberdeen, Belfast, Bristol and Manchester over the last two years](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html). In the year ended 31 May 2025, the firm opened [four new technology delivery centres in Belfast, Cardiff, Manchester and Newcastle](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html), to meet [a growing demand from clients for their data to reside in the UK](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2025-financial-results.html). The new technology delivery centres across the UK were [fully operational in FY26, providing further breadth of delivery capability](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html).

## What Are Your Rights if You Are Offered Redundancy in the UK?

You are normally entitled to statutory redundancy pay [if you're an employee and you've been working for your current employer for 2 years or more](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay). The formula depends on age:

- [Half a week's pay for each full year you were under 22](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay).
- [One week's pay for each full year you were 22 or older, but under 41](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay).
- [One and half week's pay for each full year you were 41 or older](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay).

[Length of service is capped at 20 years](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay), and your weekly pay is [the average you earned each week over the 12 weeks before the day you got your redundancy notice](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay). You are not entitled to statutory redundancy pay if [your employer offers to keep you on, or offers you suitable alternative work which you refuse without good reason](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay).

For redundancies on or after 6 April 2026, [weekly pay is capped at £751 and the maximum statutory redundancy pay you can get is £22,530](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay) (about $1,003 a week and about $30,080 in total), and you have [6 months from the date your job ends to apply](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay).

Anyone being made redundant may be eligible for [a consultation with your employer](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights) and [the option to move into a different job](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights), and selection must be done [in a fair way, for example because of your level of experience or capability to do the job](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights). You can get advice on redundancy from [Acas (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) or Citizens Advice](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

The Deloitte numbers show a firm that is profitable, hiring and cutting jobs in the same year. For a job seeker, the useful signal is which team you join, not the brand on the door.

- **Read the right number.** A fall in average headcount [shouldn't be interpreted as the number of employees made redundant](https://hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/reward-news/deloitte-boss-gets-45-pay-rise-to-7-1m-as-uk-workforce-shrinks/392197). Ask which business line is growing before you accept an offer.
- **Use the in-grade figure in pay talks.** The [published average in-grade rise](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html) gives you a benchmark when you discuss your own review at Deloitte.
- **Price a voluntary package against the statutory floor.** Statutory pay is [capped](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay), so work out your statutory amount from your age and years of service and compare the enhanced offer with it before you sign.
- **Pair AI skills with client judgment.** Graves said that "[as AI makes intelligence increasingly abundant, the role our people play will matter more, not less](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html)", and the firm has [a Chief AI Officer, responsible for driving the firm's AI strategy](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html).
- **Look outside London.** The new deal transformation roles expand Deloitte's M&A capability [outside London](https://www.cityam.com/deloitte-to-create-100-new-jobs-with-launch-of-regional-deals-unit/), and the firm runs [technology delivery centres across the UK](https://www.deloitte.com/uk/en/about/press-room/deloitte-uk-publishes-2026-financial-results.html).

Lacey Kaelani, [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com)'s CEO, puts it this way: A firm can cut jobs and hire in the same year. Your job is to find the team that is growing, then ask for pay that matches its results.
