# Ohio Lands Nearly 2,000 Aircraft Jobs as Electra Formally Welcomed to Springfield

Electra's $850 million Springfield plant will create 1,975 jobs, nearly 2,000, building its nine-passenger plane. See the open Ohio roles, pay and timeline.

[Electra's $850 million investment in Clark County will create 1,975 new jobs](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio), and on October 28 Governor Mike DeWine went to Springfield to [sign a proclamation to officially welcome Electra to the Miami Valley](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio). This is the formal follow-up to a site choice first [made public at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 21](https://www.jobsohio.com/newsroom/news-press/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio). The plant will build the [EL9 Ultra Short, a nine-passenger, fixed-wing aircraft that uses hybrid-electric propulsion and blown-lift technology to take off and land in as little as 150 feet](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio). ## What Did Ohio Announce in Springfield on October 28?

The event took place at the [National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio), where officials and business leaders [gathered Wednesday afternoon](https://dayton247now.com/news/local/electra-picks-springfield-for-aircraft-production-creating-2000-new-jobs-for-ohio) to mark the first EL9 production site.

The [nearly 2,000 new jobs](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio) in the state's headline line are the rounded form of the [1,975 jobs Electra gave in July](https://electra.aero/news/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio), not a larger plan.

DeWine put it plainly at the event. "[Two thousand jobs, good manufacturing jobs will be right here](https://dayton247now.com/news/local/electra-picks-springfield-for-aircraft-production-creating-2000-new-jobs-for-ohio)," he said, calling the plant a win for Springfield, Clark County and the Miami Valley.

Electra chose the site after [a year-long competitive national site-selection process that evaluated more than 140 potential locations](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio). The company's criteria included [workforce availability, infrastructure readiness, long-term expansion capacity, state and local partnership, incentives, and proximity to the aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing talent needed to support EL9 Ultra Short production](https://electra.aero/news/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio). Springfield counts the project as [one of the largest jobs announcements in its history](https://wysu.org/ohio-news/2026-07-21/850m-aircraft-factory-to-bring-nearly-2-000-jobs-to-clark-county).

## What Will the Springfield Plant Build?

Electra pitches the EL9 Ultra Short for [Direct Aviation, a new category of accessible, point-to-point air mobility using novel access points such as parking lots, barges, and sports fields](https://www.jobsohio.com/newsroom/news-press/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio). Electra markets the plane as offering [2.5x the payload and 10x longer range with 70% lower operating costs than helicopters and eVTOLs](https://www.jobsohio.com/newsroom/news-press/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio), which is the company's own comparison. Beyond passenger trips, the company sees the plane [unlocking new markets for commercial advanced air mobility, military logistics, and humanitarian applications](https://www.potomaclocal.com/2026/07/21/manassas-firm-picks-ohio-for-factory/).

The new facility [will be located at AirPark Ohio, adjacent to Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio). The site is also [near U.S. Route 68 and Interstate 70](https://www.manufacturingdive.com/news/electra-beehive-ohio-gkn-rtx-doncasters-farnborough-air-show-2026/826082/).

Two sizes appear for the site. The state gives it as [96 acres](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio), while Electra's release gives [about 88.5 acres](https://electra.aero/news/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio), and its [Ohio jobs page](https://electra.aero/careers/ohio-jobs) marks the design as subject to change.

Electra will also [continue to operate parts of its business from its Manassas, Virginia facilities](https://electra.aero/news/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio). The [factory itself went to Ohio, not Virginia](https://www.potomaclocal.com/2026/07/21/manassas-firm-picks-ohio-for-factory/). When asked whether Manassas was among the finalists, [Electra declined to say](https://www.potomaclocal.com/2026/07/21/manassas-firm-picks-ohio-for-factory/), and [specific details on how Virginia incentives compared, or why the production work did not stay closer to the Manassas headquarters, were not released](https://www.potomaclocal.com/2026/07/21/manassas-firm-picks-ohio-for-factory/).

## When Will the Factory Open, and When Could Hiring Start?

The schedule runs in phases. [Design work](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio) on the facility is underway, with [construction set to start in 2027](https://www.manufacturingdive.com/news/electra-beehive-ohio-gkn-rtx-doncasters-farnborough-air-show-2026/826082/). The first phase will support production of [up to 400 aircraft](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio) a year, and a second phase is planned to expand capacity to [up to 800 aircraft](https://governor.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/governor/media/news-and-media/governor-dewine-welcomes-electra-to-ohio) a year.

An opening date [was not disclosed](https://www.manufacturingdive.com/news/electra-beehive-ohio-gkn-rtx-doncasters-farnborough-air-show-2026/826082/) in July. Springfield Mayor Rob Rue said in July that the company [expects to complete the project in two to four years](https://wysu.org/ohio-news/2026-07-21/850m-aircraft-factory-to-bring-nearly-2-000-jobs-to-clark-county), with a fuller timeline to come soon from CEO Marc Allen.

Electra has [submitted the EL9 for FAA Part 23 type certification and expects the first flight of a conforming aircraft in late 2027 or early 2028](https://avweb.com/aviation-news/electra-selects-ohio-for-el9-factory/). The FAA has also [closed the G-1 Issue Paper, formally establishing the certification basis for Electra’s EL9 Ultra Short aircraft](https://electra.aero/news/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio), a step toward the next phase of type certification.

No start date for production hiring in Springfield appears on [Electra's Ohio jobs page](https://electra.aero/careers/ohio-jobs). Its [target date for the full job count](https://www.wyso.org/military-aviation-news/2026-08-24/ohio-gives-tax-credit-to-aerospace-startup-planning-nearly-2-000-aviation-jobs-in-clark-county) comes with the payroll projection below.

## What Payroll Does Electra Expect, and What Tax Credit Did Ohio Approve?

The Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved [a 2.227 percent tax credit for the project](https://www.wyso.org/military-aviation-news/2026-08-24/ohio-gives-tax-credit-to-aerospace-startup-planning-nearly-2-000-aviation-jobs-in-clark-county) on August 24, and [the tax credits are for 30 years](https://www.wyso.org/military-aviation-news/2026-08-24/ohio-gives-tax-credit-to-aerospace-startup-planning-nearly-2-000-aviation-jobs-in-clark-county).

Electra anticipates the full job count and [generating nearly $181.5 million in new annual payroll by the end of 2035](https://www.wyso.org/military-aviation-news/2026-08-24/ohio-gives-tax-credit-to-aerospace-startup-planning-nearly-2-000-aviation-jobs-in-clark-county). That is a company projection tied to the credit, so it is a target, not a payroll that exists today. The Electra project was [one of more than a dozen new state-wide projects to get assistance from the state](https://www.wyso.org/military-aviation-news/2026-08-24/ohio-gives-tax-credit-to-aerospace-startup-planning-nearly-2-000-aviation-jobs-in-clark-county) that day, and those projects together are [expected to generate nearly $310 million in new payroll](https://www.wyso.org/military-aviation-news/2026-08-24/ohio-gives-tax-credit-to-aerospace-startup-planning-nearly-2-000-aviation-jobs-in-clark-county).

## Who Is Electra, and Who Is Backing It?

Its strategic investors include [Lockheed Martin Ventures, Honeywell, and Safran](https://www.jobsohio.com/newsroom/news-press/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio), along with Prysm Capital and the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation.

Electra's contracted customers include [the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, and NASA along with over 2,200 letters of intent from 60+ commercial customers](https://www.jobsohio.com/newsroom/news-press/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio). ## Why Did Electra Choose the Dayton-Springfield Region?

The airport is one draw. Springfield-Beckley is home to [the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence (NAAMCE) and SkyVision, the FAA-approved ground-based detect-and-avoid system](https://electra.aero/news/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio) used for flight testing beyond visual line of sight.

The region also offers [proximity to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Research Laboratory](https://www.jobsohio.com/newsroom/news-press/electra-to-usher-in-the-next-era-of-aviation-with-advanced-production-facility-in-springfield-ohio), plus growing advanced air mobility production near Dayton International Airport, where [Joby Aviation has air taxi plane manufacturing facilities](https://www.manufacturingdive.com/news/electra-beehive-ohio-gkn-rtx-doncasters-farnborough-air-show-2026/826082/).
