Europe's wind industry is set to create [more than 100,000 additional jobs between now and 2030](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-is-hiring-heres-how-to-get-a-job-in-it/), and the industry body says skills shortages are already visible. The sector needs [7,000 blade technicians, 6,500 field engineers and 5,000 pre-assembly technicians](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-is-hiring-heres-how-to-get-a-job-in-it/) before the decade is out. These are jobs expected to arrive between now and the end of the decade, not a single hiring round you can apply to today. To help people find a way in, the trade body [WindEurope launched its Careers Hub on 24 September 2026](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-is-hiring-heres-how-to-get-a-job-in-it/). For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers, the useful part is what the work is, what it pays and where to train, so this piece goes through the hub itself, the job profiles inside it and the apprenticeship and graduate routes it points to.

## How Many Wind Jobs Will Europe Add by 2030, and Where Do Today's Workers Sit?

The industry body's June 2026 workforce figures put employment at [478,000 people, across 225,000 direct jobs and 253,000 indirect jobs](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-jobs-from-guesswork-to-game-plan/). In that June update, manufacturing alone accounts for [110,000 of those jobs](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-jobs-from-guesswork-to-game-plan/). By 2030 the sector is set to employ [more than 600,000 people](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-jobs-from-guesswork-to-game-plan/).

The outlook depends on building. The December 2025 workforce study modelled its 2030 jobs figure on Europe installing [on average 30 GW annually over 2025-2030](https://windeurope.org/news/europes-wind-energy-workforce-powers-ahead-jobs-skills-and-opportunities-for-2030/). The same study put the EU on course for [344 GW of wind energy by 2030, well short of its 425 GW target](https://windeurope.org/news/europes-wind-energy-workforce-powers-ahead-jobs-skills-and-opportunities-for-2030/), with cumbersome permitting, insufficient grid build-out and poor national auction design among the bottlenecks.

For a job seeker this matters in a simple way. The jobs follow the projects, and the industry warns the link runs both ways, since [if critical roles are not filled, wind energy development will slow down](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-jobs-from-guesswork-to-game-plan/). The end-of-decade figure is a projection that depends on building, not a guarantee.

The work is spread across the whole life of a wind farm. The hub's page also shows an undated breakdown by stage, with [150,000 jobs in manufacturing, 60,000 in planning and development, 38,000 in operations and maintenance, 22,000 in installation and 11,000 in decommissioning](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/), which puts manufacturing well ahead of every other stage.

## Which Wind Jobs Are Hardest to Fill?

The three named shortages are technical roles. Blade technicians, field engineers and pre-assembly technicians top the list in the [December 2025 workforce study](https://windeurope.org/news/europes-wind-energy-workforce-powers-ahead-jobs-skills-and-opportunities-for-2030/), which mapped 235 job profiles across the wind farm lifecycle.

The later data adds welders to the pressure points. The industry's Workforce Development Tool shows shortages are concentrated in the technical roles needed to build and install wind farms, including [field engineers, assembly technicians, pre-assembly technicians and welders](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-jobs-from-guesswork-to-game-plan/), and demand for these roles will grow by 2030.

The most useful line for career changers is about training. In that study, [8 out of 10 critical roles](https://windeurope.org/news/europes-wind-energy-workforce-powers-ahead-jobs-skills-and-opportunities-for-2030/) with the largest shortage will rely on vocational education and training. In plain terms, most of the critical roles in shortage will lean on vocational routes such as trade courses and apprenticeships.

WindEurope set the launch against [youth unemployment across the EU](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-is-hiring-heres-how-to-get-a-job-in-it/). In July 2026 the youth unemployment rate stood at [15.1% in the EU and 14.9% in the euro area](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Unemployment_statistics), on the latest monthly figures from Eurostat. The hub was built with that group in mind, naming students, jobseekers, young people not in education, employment or training, and [workers from other sectors](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-is-hiring-heres-how-to-get-a-job-in-it/) as the people who often do not see wind as an option.

> Europe's wind sector needs [7,000 blade technicians, 6,500 field engineers and 5,000 pre-assembly technicians](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-is-hiring-heres-how-to-get-a-job-in-it/) before 2030, and [8 out of 10 critical roles](https://windeurope.org/news/europes-wind-energy-workforce-powers-ahead-jobs-skills-and-opportunities-for-2030/) with the largest shortage will rely on vocational training.

## What Is Inside the WindEurope Careers Hub?

WindEurope calls the hub [a single entry point for careers in wind energy](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-is-hiring-heres-how-to-get-a-job-in-it/). Its sections cover [why to work in wind](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/why-work-in-wind/), areas of work, career pathways, education and training, and a directory of employers, plus a [quiz that takes two minutes](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/) and places you on a slider between options that feel most like you.

The quiz is built to match you to a career pathway, and the hub groups roles under [Construction and Maintenance, Analysis, Innovation, Protection and Coordination](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/), from hands-on technical work to sustainability and project management.

The areas of work page splits jobs by where you would actually stand. Offshore roles on the page include [Electrical Technician, Marine Biologist, Fisheries Liaison Officer and Metocean Specialist](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/areas-of-work/). Onshore roles on the same page include [GIS Specialist, Grid Connection Specialist, Power Electronics Technician and Assembly Technician](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/areas-of-work/). The office side lists [Data Analyst, Design Engineer, Financial Analyst and Data Scientist](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/areas-of-work/).

The range goes well beyond engineers. The mapped profiles run from [welders, technicians and engineers to data specialists, project managers, lawyers, finance experts, communicators and supply chain professionals](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-is-hiring-heres-how-to-get-a-job-in-it/), and each profile explains what the job involves and which qualifications it requires. The hub also gathers [education, graduate programmes, internships and apprenticeships](https://www.windtech-international.com/industry-news/windeurope-launches-careers-hub-for-wind-industry) in one place.

One gap is worth knowing. The construction and maintenance pathway lists five roles, [Electrical Technician, Welder, Cable Installation Crew, Maintenance Technician and Assembly Technician](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/), and blade technician is not among them, even though it tops the shortage list.

## What Do Wind Technicians and Welders Earn in Europe?

The hub's job profiles publish indicative pay. The ranges come from a study by the staffing firm [Atlas NextWave](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/assembly-technician/) and are grouped into four clusters of countries with comparable salary markets.

Here is what three of the profiles show, from the highest paying cluster to the lowest:

- **Electrical Technician.** From [€65,000 to €78,000 a year in the top cluster down to €32,000 to €41,000 in the lowest](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/electrical-technician/).
- **Welder.** From [€55,000 to €68,000 down to €25,000 to €33,000](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/welder/).
- **Assembly Technician.** From [€50,000 to €60,000 down to €23,000 to €30,000](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/assembly-technician/).

Read those numbers carefully. The ranges are [gross annual base salary for professionals with approximately five years' experience](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/welder/), and they exclude bonuses, offshore allowances and other variable pay. The [profiles](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/welder/) give pay only for about five years' experience and list no starting salaries. For offshore roles, the additional benefits [may include offshore or site allowances and rotational working patterns](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/electrical-technician/).

The benefits list is the same across these profiles. It names pension contributions, health and well-being benefits, flexible working and professional development, with offshore roles adding [specialist training and certifications and the chance to work on international projects](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/electrical-technician/).

## What Qualifications Do You Need for Entry-Level Wind Jobs?

Of the three profiles, assembly technician sets the lowest formal bar. The profile asks for a [High School Diploma or equivalent](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/assembly-technician/), lists technical or vocational training in mechanics, electrical systems or manufacturing as common, and states that on-the-job training is often provided.

The day-to-day work is described in plain terms. Assembly technicians follow technical instructions and assembly procedures, check alignment and quality, and [identify and report defects or issues](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/assembly-technician/) in manufacturing facilities before components go out to site.

Welders typically need a trade behind them. The welder profile lists a high school diploma or equivalent, [vocational training in welding, metalwork, or a related trade](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/welder/), and welding certifications that are often needed depending on the role.

Electrical technicians need a technical qualification. The profile asks for a [technical diploma or training in electrical engineering or a related field](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/electrical-technician/), and names vocational education, apprenticeships and hands-on training as common entry pathways. The work can take place in [factories, on construction sites or on offshore wind farms](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/electrical-technician/).

Safety training is another route the hub points to. The hub's training directory lists a category of [GWO certified courses](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/education-and-training/) run by providers across Europe. The [Global Wind Organisation's Basic Safety Training standard](https://www.globalwindsafety.org/standards/basic-safety-training-standard) covers first aid, working at height, manual handling, fire awareness and sea survival, with modules written for the wind turbine environment.

> I didn't study anything big to become a Rope Access Technician, but I did plenty of rope access trainings, courses and refreshers to be able to perform my job well. Jens Verbocht, rope access technician, on [the hub's areas of work page](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/areas-of-work/)

## Where Can You Train for a Wind Career in Europe?

The education and training directory is searchable by country and course type. Its filters cover countries from [Belgium, Denmark and Germany to Poland, Romania and Spain](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/education-and-training/), and categories from bachelor and master degrees to PhDs, GWO certified courses and other training programmes.

A few listings show how varied the routes are. In the Netherlands, the Scalda WindDock module combines specialised training with [guaranteed internship opportunities through the Dutch Internship Covenant with NedZero](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/education-and-training/). In Denmark, the Technical University of Denmark lists [several master programmes, including one in wind energy and an online version](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/education-and-training/). In Germany, the [BZEE training network](https://www.bzee-association.org/) develops certified courses with a high level of practical content, focused on training on real turbines.

Degree routes are there for those who want them. The directory also lists [Aalborg University's energy engineering bachelor and master programmes](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/education-and-training/), alongside university programmes in Switzerland and elsewhere. Aalborg University also lists a [Hybrid Wind Power Systems specialisation within its MSc in Energy Engineering](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/education-and-training/).

## How Does a Paid Wind Turbine Apprenticeship Work?

The hub's training directory lists [Kerry College's Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Programme](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/education-and-training/), which combines paid work experience with specialist training. Ireland's [National Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship](https://windturbineapprenticeship.ie/) trains people in health and safety and in maintenance and fault finding across electrical, mechanical, control and hydraulic systems.

The programme runs over [three years across seven phases](https://windturbineapprenticeship.ie/), alternating centre-based training at Kerry College in Tralee with work-based stages at an employer. The employer pays [an agreed apprentice rate or salary for both the on the job and off the job phases](https://windturbineapprenticeship.ie/).

The entry rules are published in full. Applicants need a [Level 4 Major Award on the National Framework of Qualifications, or at least three years trade-related experience](https://windturbineapprenticeship.ie/), a pass in Maths at Level 3 or equivalent, and B2 English for second-language speakers, while applicants who fall short can sit a panel interview instead. All candidates sit [suitability tests, including a medical fitness assessment, a colour vision test and a heights test](https://windturbineapprenticeship.ie/).

The first step is finding an employer. You first need a contract with a [SOLAS-approved employer from the wind industry](https://windturbineapprenticeship.ie/), though applicants without one can email a CV to Kerry College and, if successful at interview, join a pool that employers select from. The site lists the [next class as starting on 9 November 2026](https://windturbineapprenticeship.ie/) and also says that applications closed on 29 May.

## Which Graduate Schemes and Internships Does the Hub List?

The employer directory features several early-career schemes, and only Equinor's comes with a published application window. The hub lists [RES's 2027 Graduate Intake, Equinor's Summer Internship Programme and Hitachi Energy's Global Power+ Graduate Development Program](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/meet-the-companies/) among its featured schemes.

The hub says applications for Equinor's 2027 programme [are open from 25 September to 15 October](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/meet-the-companies/). Equinor's own page tells students to [apply before 15 October 2026](https://www.equinor.com/careers/summer-interns) for its 2027 Summer Internship Programme. It is a [seven-week, office-based programme](https://www.equinor.com/careers/summer-interns) with disciplines such as technology and engineering, finance and trading, and IT and cybernetics. The page describes the internship as an insight into Equinor's [Norwegian continental shelf, international oil and gas operations, power, and energy markets](https://www.equinor.com/careers/summer-interns), not only wind.

The Hitachi Energy programme is longer, and the hub does not give its application dates. The hub describes it as [an 18-month international programme designed for STEM graduates](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/meet-the-companies/), in which participants complete three six-month rotational assignments across different business areas, geographies and technical disciplines.

The directory also profiles members such as [Vestas, Ørsted, RWE, Jan De Nul and Siemens Gamesa](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/meet-the-companies/), each with a link to its website. The pathway pages invite readers to [take a look at the job availabilities of its members](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/), so treat the hub as the map and the employer sites as the door.

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

Our take is that this jobs projection comes with a usable map. The end of decade number depends on Europe actually building the wind farms, and the industry's own study puts the EU on course for [344 GW by 2030, well short of its 425 GW target](https://windeurope.org/news/europes-wind-energy-workforce-powers-ahead-jobs-skills-and-opportunities-for-2030/). But the shortage roles are named, the pay ranges are published, and [8 out of 10 critical roles](https://windeurope.org/news/europes-wind-energy-workforce-powers-ahead-jobs-skills-and-opportunities-for-2030/) with the largest shortage will rely on vocational education and training.

Start with the hands-on trades. Blade, assembly and pre-assembly work, welding and field engineering are the roles the industry names in its [June 2026 workforce update](https://windeurope.org/news/wind-energy-jobs-from-guesswork-to-game-plan/) and its [December 2025 study](https://windeurope.org/news/europes-wind-energy-workforce-powers-ahead-jobs-skills-and-opportunities-for-2030/). If you already weld, wire or assemble in car plants, shipyards or construction, read the welder and electrical technician profiles first, since they ask for [vocational training in welding, metalwork, or a related trade](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/welder/) or a technical diploma in electrical engineering.

Here is what to do this month:

- **Take the quiz, then read two profiles.** Use the pathway it suggests and compare the qualifications list with what you already hold.
- **Check the pay for your country cluster.** Remember the ranges assume [about five years' experience](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/welder/) and the profiles do not publish entry rates.
- **Book safety training early.** Look for [GWO certified providers](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/education-and-training/) near you in the hub's directory.
- **Watch the deadlines.** Equinor's own page tells students to [apply before 15 October 2026](https://www.equinor.com/careers/summer-interns) for its 2027 internship. Ireland's apprenticeship site says [applications closed on 29 May and the next class starts on 9 November 2026](https://windturbineapprenticeship.ie/).
- **Apply on employer sites.** The hub's pathway pages invite readers to [take a look at the job availabilities of its members](https://windeurope.org/careers-hub/career-pathways/construction-and-maintenance/). If you are still choosing a trade, compare the wind profiles with other [vocational jobs](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/vocational-jobs) and with [welder pay more broadly](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/welder-salary).
