## GM Job Cuts Shake Oshawa

The auto town of Oshawa, Ontario, is bracing for another painful round of layoffs. [General Motors](https://www.gm.ca/en/home.html) announced it will **cut the third shift at its Oshawa Assembly plant on Jan. 30, 2026**, putting **2,000 jobs on the line**. About **750 GM workers** will lose their posts, alongside **1,500 supply chain jobs** tied directly to the plant.

The news lands hard in a city where unemployment already sits at **9%**, one of the highest rates among major Canadian cities. For many families who've clocked generations on GM's line, the layoffs feel like the unraveling of a century-old identity.

## The Human Cost of a Shift Cut

Workers aren't just losing jobs—they're losing stability. Some employees are already **selling homes and vehicles** in preparation. Others, like Oshawa native Todd Forbes, are weighing leaving the city entirely to find work.

"It's gut-wrenching," Forbes said. A father and grandfather, he's considering relocating to [Nova Scotia](https://novascotia.ca/) with his wife and dog, convinced his odds of landing a decent-paying job are better there.

Forbes' story is a snapshot of a larger exodus. Families who once relied on GM wages are being forced to make tough calls about retraining, relocating, or taking lower-wage roles. While Oshawa's mayor insists the city is "too stubborn to give up," [union leaders](https://www.unifor.org/) warn that these layoffs will hit deep, especially among households with multiple GM workers.

## Tariffs, Trade, and Tough Choices

GM points to "evolving market conditions" as the reason for the cut. The backdrop: a tense trade environment shaped by **U.S. tariffs of 25% on non-**[**CUSMA**](https://www.international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux/agr-acc/cusma-aceum/index.aspx?lang=eng)**auto parts**, sluggish manufacturing payrolls, and Canada's national unemployment rate climbing to **7.1%**, its highest since 2016 outside the pandemic.

Meanwhile, GM is **adding staff at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, plant**, raising questions about whether Canada is losing out to U.S. production priorities. Both plants assemble the [Chevrolet Silverado](https://www.chevrolet.com/trucks/silverado), making the shift cuts feel less like an economic necessity and more like a strategic relocation.

With about **3,000 GM employees** and **2,000 supplier workers** tied to the Oshawa site daily, the impact will ripple through local businesses, from restaurants to retailers.

For Oshawa, the looming cuts revive a decades-long story of factory downsizing in Canada's auto belt. And while retraining programs are often floated as a solution, many workers say they'd rather keep the jobs they already know.

By January, thousands will be forced to face a reality that's reshaping blue-collar towns worldwide: when global automakers shuffle production, local communities are left to pick up the pieces.
