The battery plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, that [General Motors](https://news.gm.com/home.detail.html/Pages/topic/us/en/2026/sep/0929-ultium-cells-lmr-tennessee.html) owns with [LG Energy Solution](https://www.lgensol.com/en/index) is set to make a new kind of battery cell, and the change is [projected to create 500 new jobs](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--) in addition to a current workforce of 1,200 employees. If the projection holds, the plant's workforce goes [from 1,200 to 1,700](https://motorillustrated.com/gm-lg-lmr-battery-cells-spring-hill-tennessee/197185/) once the upgrades are complete. ## What Exactly Is Changing at the Spring Hill Plant?

Ultium Cells will [upgrade its battery cell manufacturing facility](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--) to produce LMR cells, adding LMR to a company that already makes [high-nickel and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--). Spring Hill itself began making [LFP cells for energy storage systems in June, 2026](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--). The plant is [expected to be the first in the world](https://tnecd.com/news/ultium-cells-to-invest-additional-1-billion-in-spring-hill/) to produce prismatic LMR battery cells in mass production.

The location itself is not new, since the plant's [location announcement came in April 2021](https://www.ultiumcell.com/our-locations/spring-hill-tennessee). It [began production in February 2024](https://www.ultiumcell.com/our-locations/spring-hill-tennessee) and spans half a mile along Highway 31 between Spring Hill and Columbia. The plant has annual production capacity of [more than 45 gigawatt hours](https://www.ultiumcell.com/our-locations/spring-hill-tennessee) and covers 2.8 million square feet, about 45 football fields. Its first battery cells shipped to General Motors on [March 21, 2024](https://www.ultiumcell.com/our-locations/spring-hill-tennessee), two and a half years after the company broke ground. Construction [began in August 2021](https://www.ultiumcell.com/our-locations/spring-hill-tennessee), and the steel structure was completed on June 8, 2022. In July 2025, Ultium set out a plan to make [LFP cells for more affordable EVs by late 2027](https://www.ultiumcell.com/our-locations/spring-hill-tennessee), and GM's battery chief has since said GM [may drop a plan for LFP cells to focus on LMR](https://motorillustrated.com/gm-lg-lmr-battery-cells-spring-hill-tennessee/197185/), Reuters reported.

The plant has [made cells for GM electric vehicles including the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq](https://www.ultiumcell.com/our-locations/spring-hill-tennessee), built at the neighbouring GM Spring Hill Assembly plant, but for now Warren, Ohio, is [the only one of the two Ultium sites building EV batteries for GM vehicles in the U.S.](https://motorillustrated.com/gm-lg-lmr-battery-cells-spring-hill-tennessee/197185/)

GM and LG revealed the battery technology [over a year ago](https://electrek.co/2026/09/29/gms-new-ev-battery-tech-cut-costs-without-sacrificing-range/), and this is the first time the companies have publicly named where it will be made. In March, Spring Hill was still only [a candidate for that work](https://gmauthority.com/blog/2026/03/gm-ultium-cells-tennessee-plant-to-manufacture-stationary-energy-storage-batteries/). Spring Hill is now [the named site](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--).

## Is the Workforce Really Going From 1,200 to 1,700?

The 500 new jobs are [a projection](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--), and the release gives no hiring schedule for them. Added to the current staff, that would take the workforce to [1,700](https://electrek.co/2026/09/29/gms-new-ev-battery-tech-cut-costs-without-sacrificing-range/).

One detail is worth knowing if you are checking the company's pages. The Spring Hill location page on the Ultium website lists [approximately 1,350 team members](https://www.ultiumcell.com/our-locations/spring-hill-tennessee) at the time of writing, a higher number than the [1,200 in the new announcement](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--). The page does not date that figure, so this article uses the [1,200 figure](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--) from the September announcement for the plant's current workforce.

The 2021 joint venture came with a pledge [to create 1,300 jobs](https://tnecd.com/news/ultium-cells-to-invest-additional-1-billion-in-spring-hill/) with an investment of more than $2.3 billion, and a 2022 expansion was set to create [another 400 new jobs and invest a further $275 million](https://tnecd.com/news/ultium-cells-to-invest-additional-1-billion-in-spring-hill/). The new projection is in addition to the plant's current workforce of [1,200 employees](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--).

> This marks Ultium Cells’ second major investment in Spring Hill and reflects the company’s continued growth as a diversified battery cell manufacturer, Ultium Cells President Injae Pahk said, according to [the Tennessee economic development release](https://tnecd.com/news/ultium-cells-to-invest-additional-1-billion-in-spring-hill/).

## How Much Money Is Going In, and What Does It Cover?

Ultium Cells [will invest $1 billion](https://tnecd.com/news/ultium-cells-to-invest-additional-1-billion-in-spring-hill/) in its Spring Hill facility. That total covers [two programs and facility improvements through 2030](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--), the new LMR line and the LFP storage cells the plant already makes.

So the billion dollars is not all new LMR spending, since it [includes an energy storage project already under way](https://motorillustrated.com/gm-lg-lmr-battery-cells-spring-hill-tennessee/197185/), which GM valued at US$70 million at the time, the Detroit Free Press reported. The energy storage production it includes began in [June 2026](https://www.wkrn.com/news/local-news/spring-hill-gm-plant-to-receive-1b-upgrade/), for [LG Energy Solution Vertech customers](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--).

## What Is an LMR Prismatic Cell, and Why Should Job Seekers Care?

LMR stands for lithium manganese rich, and the chemistry relies heavily on manganese, [a cheaper and more plentiful metal](https://motorillustrated.com/gm-lg-lmr-battery-cells-spring-hill-tennessee/197185/). [Prismatic describes the shape](https://motorillustrated.com/gm-lg-lmr-battery-cells-spring-hill-tennessee/197185/), a flat, hard-cased rectangle.

The technology is designed to offer energy density [33% greater than lithium iron phosphate](https://news.gm.com/home.detail.html/Pages/topic/us/en/2026/sep/0929-ultium-cells-lmr-tennessee.html), today's leading low-cost battery chemistry, at a comparable cost. The 33% figure is [a potential gain](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--), not a measured result from Spring Hill.

GM plans to use LMR cells in [upcoming electric trucks and full-size SUVs](https://electrek.co/2026/09/29/gms-new-ev-battery-tech-cut-costs-without-sacrificing-range/). In the words of Kurt Kelty, GM vice president of battery and sustainability, [high-nickel batteries will continue to give customers the highest range](https://tnecd.com/news/ultium-cells-to-invest-additional-1-billion-in-spring-hill/) in GM's portfolio. After the upgrade, Ultium Cells will be able to produce cells in [multiple chemistries and form factors](https://news.gm.com/home.detail.html/Pages/topic/us/en/2026/sep/0929-ultium-cells-lmr-tennessee.html), including [both pouch and prismatic formats](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--).

GM is aiming for [over 400 miles of range](https://electrek.co/2026/09/29/gms-new-ev-battery-tech-cut-costs-without-sacrificing-range/) in the trucks and SUVs that will use LMR.

## When Will the New Jobs Actually Appear?

Construction and facility upgrades will [begin later this year and are expected to be completed in 2028](https://news.gm.com/home.detail.html/Pages/topic/us/en/2026/sep/0929-ultium-cells-lmr-tennessee.html). The companies did not say [when LMR cell production will begin](https://motorillustrated.com/gm-lg-lmr-battery-cells-spring-hill-tennessee/197185/) once construction ends, Reuters reported, and GM had previously set [a goal of starting commercial LMR production at a U.S. plant in 2028](https://motorillustrated.com/gm-lg-lmr-battery-cells-spring-hill-tennessee/197185/).

GM's first vehicle with the new LMR batteries is expected in [2028](https://electrek.co/2026/09/29/gms-new-ev-battery-tech-cut-costs-without-sacrificing-range/), Electrek reported.

## What Happened at Spring Hill Before This Announcement?

It helps to know the plant's recent history before you apply. In March, GM set out a plan to [recall 700 laid-off UAW workers](https://motorillustrated.com/gm-lg-lmr-battery-cells-spring-hill-tennessee/197185/) to build non-vehicle batteries at the plant. The plan turned the site toward [cells for the stationary energy storage market](https://gmauthority.com/blog/2026/03/gm-ultium-cells-tennessee-plant-to-manufacture-stationary-energy-storage-batteries/) at a retooling cost of tens of millions of dollars, and would put roughly 700 laid-off workers back on the payroll at a facility idled by slowing EV demand, with furloughed employees expected back by the end of April, Bloomberg reported. For Tom Gallagher, Ultium's vice president of operations, the company was [“able to transition this capacity to a new business opportunity in rapid short order”](https://gmauthority.com/blog/2026/03/gm-ultium-cells-tennessee-plant-to-manufacture-stationary-energy-storage-batteries/).

Ultium Cells Spring Hill completed the conversion of some of its existing capacity to LFP production in [less than five months](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/07/07/Ultium-Cells-Spring-Hill-Begins-Production-of-LFP-Battery-Cells-for-Energy-Storage-Systems), and those cells go to LG Energy Solution Vertech. By July, as production ramped up, [all Ultium Cells Spring Hill team members had returned](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/07/07/Ultium-Cells-Spring-Hill-Begins-Production-of-LFP-Battery-Cells-for-Energy-Storage-Systems).

The storage cells are LG Energy Solution's [JF2 LFP battery cells](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/07/07/Ultium-Cells-Spring-Hill-Begins-Production-of-LFP-Battery-Cells-for-Energy-Storage-Systems).

That history cuts two ways. The layoffs came at a facility [idled by slowing EV demand](https://gmauthority.com/blog/2026/03/gm-ultium-cells-tennessee-plant-to-manufacture-stationary-energy-storage-batteries/), while the switch to storage cells took [less than five months](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/07/07/Ultium-Cells-Spring-Hill-Begins-Production-of-LFP-Battery-Cells-for-Energy-Storage-Systems). Battery employers have cut jobs elsewhere too, as the [Redwood Materials layoffs](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/redwood-materials-layoffs-coo-departure-2026) showed, so ask how stable the line you are joining is.

## What Roles Has Ultium Cells Been Advertising in Spring Hill?

The Spring Hill jobs board, linked from the company's careers page, showed [15 openings](https://workforcenow.adp.com/mascsr/default/mdf/recruitment/recruitment.html?cid=3aada650-9516-4fad-a8af-527c53c40e64&ccId=9200679039949_2&type=JS&lang=en_US), each listed as permanent, in a late-summer 2026 snapshot. They were:

- **Engineering.** Production Engineer for Cell Assembly, Controls Engineer, Sr Controls Engineer, Equipment Tech Engineer, Inspection Engineer and a continuous improvement engineer.
- **Maintenance and facilities.** Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, a separate Equipment Maintenance Supervisor role for the formation area and a Facilities Engineering Manager.
- **Finance and supply.** Sr Accounting Specialist, Financial Planning Specialist I and a senior specialist for indirect material and spare parts.
- **Support.** An Interpreter.

## What Did Tennessee Say About the Expansion?

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Deputy Governor and economic development commissioner Stuart McWhorter unveiled the expansion on [September 29, 2026](https://tnecd.com/news/ultium-cells-to-invest-additional-1-billion-in-spring-hill/). The [state's own release](https://tnecd.com/news/ultium-cells-to-invest-additional-1-billion-in-spring-hill/) gives no job figure for this expansion and names no incentive package.

In the governor's words, the 2021 joint venture would [create new opportunities for more than 1,000 Tennessee families](https://www.wkrn.com/news/local-news/spring-hill-gm-plant-to-receive-1b-upgrade/). State Sen. Joey Hensley called the expansion [a vote of confidence in the skilled Tennesseans who work there](https://tnecd.com/news/ultium-cells-to-invest-additional-1-billion-in-spring-hill/). Gov. Lee also thanked Ultium Cells for its [commitment to create new, high-quality jobs](https://www.ultiumcell.com/newsroom/latest-news/2026/09/28/Ultium-Cells-to-Upgrade-Spring-Hill-Operations-to-Produce-Lithium-Manganese-Rich-LMR-Prismatic-Battery-Cells--). ## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?
