Greggs has launched a consultation on proposals that [could lead to the closure of four sites and may result in a total of circa 740 roles becoming redundant over a period of two and a half years](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110), set out in its third quarter trading update on 30 September 2026. The four factories proposed for closure are [Enfield, North Lakes, Pettigrews and Seaham](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update). [No final decisions have been made](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update), so the people who work at those sites are at risk rather than out of work. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers who work in food manufacturing, or who live near one of these towns, the useful detail sits in three places, which are the company's own filing, the UK government's redundancy rules and the vacancies on [Greggs' current vacancy search](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/search). Here is what each one shows.

## What Exactly Did Greggs Announce on 30 September?

The announcement came inside the [Q3 trading update](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110) that Greggs published through RNS, the London Stock Exchange news service. Greggs carried out [a comprehensive review to determine where its future manufacturing activity should most effectively be located](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110), which resulted in proposals that would relocate elements of its manufacturing processes.

The proposals, subject to consultation, would bring [cash costs of circa £60 million, comprising capital expenditure of circa £40 million, together with disruption costs and redundancy payments](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110). The expected annual saving in pre-tax operating costs is [circa £20 million](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110), which, at this stage, Greggs anticipates would be realised across the 2028 and 2029 financial years.

The wider business is trading well, with total sales up [7.7% for the 13 weeks to 26 September 2026](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110), and the company now expects a modestly improved outcome for the year. Greggs shares [jumped by more than 6% in early trading to 1,999p](https://britbrief.co.uk/business/manufacturing/greggs-to-close-four-factories-with-loss-of-740-jobs.html) after the announcement.

## Which Greggs Sites Are Affected, and Which Keep Running?

Greggs also [proposes changes at Treforest, Clydesmill, Manchester and Gosforth](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update) on top of the four closures.

- **Proposed factory closures.** Enfield, North Lakes, Pettigrews and Seaham, with [distribution operations at Enfield remaining unchanged](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update).
- **Treforest.** Manufacturing would end, but the site [would continue to operate as a distribution centre](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update).
- **Clydesmill and Manchester.** Both would [make a smaller range of products while keeping manufacturing on site](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update).
- **Gosforth.** The [manufacture of tinned bread would end](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update) there.

If the plan goes ahead after consultation, Greggs would have [manufacturing operations focused across six sites, Clydesmill, Gosforth, Balliol, Leeds, Manchester and Derby](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update). Its shops are [unaffected by these proposed changes](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update), and a small number of products would be sourced from [specialist suppliers where this would deliver clear benefits](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update).

On a map, the sites are [Pettigrews in Kelso in the Borders, Enfield in Greater London, North Lakes near Penrith in Cumbria, and Seaham in County Durham](https://britbrief.co.uk/business/employment/greggs-closure-plans-sad-day-for-borders-workers.html). Treforest sits [near Pontypridd](https://britbrief.co.uk/business/manufacturing/greggs-to-close-four-factories-with-loss-of-740-jobs.html).

## How Many Jobs Are at Each Site?

The filing gives one total, [circa 740 roles](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110), across the whole programme, and the company has [not yet confirmed how the potential 740 job losses would be divided among the affected sites](https://www.ibtimes.sg/greggs-job-losses-740-jobs-risk-bakery-shuts-four-factories-despite-sales-surge-94448).

For Kelso, a Scottish Borders councillor said the Pettigrews factory [likely employs less than 100 people](https://britbrief.co.uk/business/employment/greggs-closure-plans-sad-day-for-borders-workers.html), a councillor's estimate rather than a Greggs figure, and the factory has had a [presence in Kelso since 1968](https://britbrief.co.uk/business/employment/greggs-closure-plans-sad-day-for-borders-workers.html).

For scale, Greggs employs [around 33,000 colleagues](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update), [with the vast majority of these in stores](https://britbrief.co.uk/business/employment/greggs-closure-plans-sad-day-for-borders-workers.html).

> Our immediate priority is to minimise the impact on our people where possible, according to [the Greggs Q3 trading update](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110).

## Why Would a Growing Company Close Factories?

Greggs says the proposals would [relocate and consolidate some of its manufacturing activity to fewer Greggs sites](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update) and are intended to create a more streamlined, resilient and efficient network. The business has grown from [2,181 shops to 2,796 shops since 2021](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update), and it has invested [more than £300 million in its manufacturing and logistics network since the start of 2024](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update) to support at least 3,500 shops.

At its new [National Distribution Centre in Derby](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110), Greggs expects frozen storage and picking to start in the final quarter, alongside the commissioning of a new sweet product production line, and the Kettering site will be operational in 2027 with more automation. Greggs believes the changes, [whilst difficult, are necessary to ensure Greggs continues to meet capacity requirements for growth in the years ahead in the most cost-efficient manner](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110).

Greggs expects its investment in capacity for [at least 3,500 shops to enable further growth in the business, creating many more jobs](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110), though the update does not say where those jobs would be or when.

## Is Anything Decided Yet, and How Long Would It Take?

Not yet, because [no final decisions have been made](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update) and all feedback received during consultation will be carefully considered first. Greggs will [enter into a consultation period shortly to work with trade unions and employee representatives](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110) of those affected, to refine and develop the proposals.

The redundancies, if they go ahead, would come [over a period of two and a half years](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110), so the closures are [expected to take place gradually rather than all at once](https://www.ibtimes.sg/greggs-job-losses-740-jobs-risk-bakery-shuts-four-factories-despite-sales-surge-94448).

## What Does Consultation Mean for Greggs Factory Workers?

When an employer is making [20 or more employees redundant at the same time](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/consultation), collective redundancy rules apply, and the consultation should take place between the employer and a representative. That rep is either a [trade union rep, or an elected employee rep if you are not represented by a trade union or your employer does not recognise your trade union](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/consultation).

[Collective consultations must cover](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/consultation) these points.

- Ways to avoid redundancies.
- The reasons for redundancies.
- How to keep the number of dismissals to a minimum.
- How to limit the effects for employees involved, for example by offering retraining.

For [100 or more redundancies, consultation must start at least 45 days before any dismissals take effect](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/consultation), and for 20 to 99 it is at least 30 days. Affected employees can [stand for election as an employee rep or vote for other reps](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/consultation), and a worker can claim at an employment tribunal if an employer does not consult properly.

Sarah Woolley, general secretary of the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU), said the union is [deeply concerned by the announcement from Greggs, which places hundreds of workers and their livelihoods at risk](https://britbrief.co.uk/business/employment/greggs-closure-plans-sad-day-for-borders-workers.html). The Workers Union's [article on the Greggs proposals](https://theworkersunion.com/2026/10/01/740-greggs-jobs-at-risk-as-workers-face-pressure-on-two-fronts) points readers to a redundancy rights guide covering consultation, selection, notice, redundancy payments and alternative employment for members and non members.

## How Much Redundancy Pay and Notice Could a Greggs Worker Get?

You will normally be entitled to statutory redundancy pay if you are an employee who has [worked for your current employer for 2 years or more](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay). The [GOV.UK statutory redundancy pay formula](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay) is set by age band.

- [Half a week's pay for each full year you were under 22](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay).
- [One week's pay for each full year you were 22 or older, but under 41](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay).
- [One and half week's pay for each full year you were 41 or older](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay).

Length of service is [capped at 20 years](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay). For anyone made redundant on or after 6 April 2026, [weekly pay is capped at £751 and the maximum statutory redundancy pay is £22,530](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay). You have [6 months from the date your job ends](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay) to apply. These are statutory amounts, and the [Greggs trading update](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110) gives no figure for any enhanced redundancy pay.

On top of that, the statutory notice periods are [at least one week's notice if employed between one month and 2 years, one week's notice for each year if employed between 2 and 12 years, and 12 weeks' notice if employed for 12 years or more](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/notice-periods). Your contract can give you more, and your employer [cannot give you less](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/notice-periods).

> Greggs is a strong and growing business, and we continue to invest significantly in our future, Chief Executive Roisin Currie said, according to [the Greggs corporate announcement](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update).

## Could Affected Workers Move to Another Greggs Site?

An employer [might offer suitable alternative employment](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/suitable-alternative-employment), and whether a job is suitable depends on [how similar the work is to your current job, the terms of the job being offered, your skills, abilities and circumstances in relation to the job, and the pay (including benefits), status, hours and location](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/suitable-alternative-employment). You have the right to a [4-week trial period](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/suitable-alternative-employment) in any alternative job you are offered. You may lose statutory redundancy pay if you [unreasonably turn down suitable alternative employment](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/suitable-alternative-employment), so get advice from your rep before saying no.

The [Greggs trading update](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110) gives no detail on whether redeployment will be offered or where. Greggs runs [14 manufacturing and distribution sites across the UK](https://careers.greggs.co.uk/roles/supply-chain), with roles from Operative to Team Leader, Supervisor and Maintenance Engineer, and the Operative role needs [no specific experience](https://careers.greggs.co.uk/roles/supply-chain).

## Which Greggs Supply Chain Jobs Are Advertised?

On the [Greggs vacancy search](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/search), the latest vacancies listed are shop roles such as Team Member and Shift Manager. Four supply chain postings show what the factory and warehouse side asks for, and three of them show what it pays.

- **Warehouse Operative, Treforest.** This temporary role at [Unit 22B, Treforest Industrial Estate](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Warehouse-Operative/62564) pays £12.91 an hour plus various premium payments at age 18, with typical annual earnings in the region of £34,000 for a shift pattern with 39 late shift hours a week and weekend working, though actual earnings depend on the exact shift pattern. Ideally you will have [worked as a Warehouse Operative within a similar environment](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Warehouse-Operative/62564). You also need to be [comfortable in a physical role](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Warehouse-Operative/62564), lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling cages, as well as other manual tasks, able to work in cold or frozen areas of the warehouse (warm PPE is provided) and supportive of an inclusive culture, and comfortable with shifts that could include nights, weekends and bank holidays. [SAP experience would be beneficial](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Warehouse-Operative/62564) but is not essential.
- **Site Services Operative, Balliol in Newcastle.** This temporary role at [Balliol Business Park](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Site-Services-Operative/63537) carries a £32,437 annual salary, inclusive of all premiums, on an annualised hours contract averaging 39 hours a week, with a shift pattern that rotates weekly through day, back and night shifts and includes some weekend work, and a closing date of 23 October. Ideally you will have [experience in a busy factory or warehouse environment](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Site-Services-Operative/63537). You also need [a knowledge of basic health and safety practices](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Site-Services-Operative/63537), the ability to follow processes and procedures, comfort standing for long periods, lifting, carrying and cleaning, support for an inclusive culture, and comfort with shifts that could include nights, weekends and bank holidays.
- **Maintenance Engineer, Enfield.** Posted on 3 September, this permanent role at [Enfield](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Maintenance-Engineer/62157) pays £57,028 a year including the shift pattern, for 44 hours a week on 12-hour shifts in a 4 on, 4 off pattern, running 7am until 7pm and 7pm until 7am. This [Enfield engineering role](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Maintenance-Engineer/62157) needs experience in a similar role, ideally in a similar environment, a multi-skilled manufacturing background, ideally within food or FMCG, an electrical bias with training to at least apprentice level, knowledge of PLC automated control systems, processes, fault finding and analysis, and experience with Microsoft 365, SAP and CMMS or similar, with Agility experience desirable. It also needs someone [comfortable communicating with a wide variety of people, with the confidence to respond positively when under pressure](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Maintenance-Engineer/62157), able to comply with Health and Safety and Food Safety standards, who enjoys being part of a hard-working team and is supportive of an inclusive culture. This Enfield listing was posted on [3 September](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Maintenance-Engineer/62157), before the proposals.
- **Production Operative, Newcastle.** This permanent [Newcastle Production Operative role](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Production-Operative/63149) ideally needs previous experience as a Production Operative. You also need to be [comfortable handling, preparing and baking food](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Production-Operative/63149), take pride in the quality of the products you make, be comfortable standing for long periods, lifting and carrying, as well as other tasks such as cleaning, and be supportive of an inclusive culture, plus comfort with shifts that could include nights, weekends and bank holidays. [SAP experience would be beneficial](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Production-Operative/63149) but is not essential.

Across roles, Greggs shares [10% of all its profits with colleagues each year](https://careers.greggs.co.uk/rewarding-you) and matches pension contributions up to 7%.

## What Help Is There in England and Scotland?

In England, the Jobcentre Plus [Rapid Response Service](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/get-help-finding-a-new-job) can help you [write CVs and find jobs, find information on benefits, find the right training and learn new skills, and organise work trials if you are eligible](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/get-help-finding-a-new-job), and may help with costs such as travel to work, childcare, tools or equipment, and vocational training, which is only considered if you are in your notice period. You can contact it if you suspect you will be made redundant, during your notice period, or [up to 13 weeks after](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/get-help-finding-a-new-job). There is a [different service in Scotland and a different service in Wales](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/get-help-finding-a-new-job).

In Scotland, that service is [Partnership Action for Continuing Employment](https://www.myworldofwork.co.uk/my-career-options/redundancy-help-scotland), known as PACE, a Scottish Government initiative offering free support, with a helpline open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Scottish Borders Council has [employability services available for anyone requiring support](https://britbrief.co.uk/business/employment/greggs-closure-plans-sad-day-for-borders-workers.html), which matters for Pettigrews staff in Kelso.

If you have been [continuously employed for 2 years by the date your notice period ends](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/suitable-alternative-employment), you can take a reasonable amount of time off to look for work or arrange training. The most your employer has to pay for that time is [40% of one week's pay](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/suitable-alternative-employment).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

The redundancies would come [over a period of two and a half years](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110), and [no final decisions have been made](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update), and the consultation is where the proposals are meant to be [refined and developed](https://uk.advfn.com/stock-market/london/greggs-GRG/share-news/Greggs-PLC-Q3-Trading-Update/99398110).

If you work at Seaham, Enfield, North Lakes, Pettigrews or Treforest, we would start gathering information now. Health and Safety and Food Safety standards, SAP and PLC fault finding all appear in [the Enfield Maintenance Engineer posting](https://careerssearch.greggs.co.uk/jobs/job/Maintenance-Engineer/62157), so if you have those skills, show them clearly on your CV. [McLaren's plan to grow its UK factory workforce](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/mclaren-uk-engines-1000-jobs) is one example of a manufacturer planning to add factory staff. When you update your CV, start from the [skills for a manufacturing resume](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/manufacturing-resume-skills) that match the posting you want.

Here is what we would do:

- **Get your rep's name.** Consultation runs through [a trade union rep or an elected employee rep](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/consultation), so find out who yours is and what they will raise.
- **Work out your statutory figure.** Use your age and years of service against the [GOV.UK redundancy pay rules](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/redundancy-pay), and check your contract for anything better.
- **Ask about other sites.** Six sites would [keep manufacturing](https://corporate.greggs.co.uk/news/Greggs-Q3-Update) if the plan goes ahead, so ask whether alternative roles will be offered and remember your [trial period right](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/suitable-alternative-employment).
- **Contact support early.** The [Rapid Response Service](https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-your-rights/get-help-finding-a-new-job) in England and [PACE in Scotland](https://www.myworldofwork.co.uk/my-career-options/redundancy-help-scotland) both help people who are facing redundancy, not only those already let go.
