**Update, October 18, 2026:**Applications for this intake closed on Thursday 8 October 2026. Applicants should hear back no later than 6 weeks after the closing date. The details below are kept as a guide for anyone preparing for a future round.

The Guardian is creating [40 new jobs](https://pressgazette.co.uk/news/guardian-creates-40-jobs-to-train-journalists-as-content-creators/) for journalists who already have a few years of work behind them and want to add video, audio, pictures and audience skills. The [Digital Journalist Scheme](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme) pays £48,000 on 18-month fixed-term contracts, and [the Creative Access application listing](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353) set the closing date as Thursday 8 October 2026 at one minute to midnight, with a start date of January 2027. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers, the news story is only the starting point. Applicants also need [GCSE Maths and English or an equivalent, and must meet a UK residency and right-to-work test](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353), on top of the experience rule. Here is what the scheme's own pages say, and how a strong application was put together.

## What Exactly Is the Guardian Offering?

The scheme will employ [40 journalists on 18-month fixed-term contracts with a salary of £48,000](https://pressgazette.co.uk/news/guardian-creates-40-jobs-to-train-journalists-as-content-creators/), and the roles are [full-time](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353). The level of experience is graded [Junior, with pay of £48,000 per year](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353).

The work is [based in the Guardian's newsroom](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme). The roles are based in the Guardian's [London office](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme), with hands-on content creation from initial research to final production and time across varied editorial departments. Participants take part in masterclasses and mentorship, and they [experiment with formats including audio, video and pictures](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme).

Training is [built into the programme](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme). Participants spend [at least 20% of their time training](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme), which covers a content creator apprenticeship delivered with a training provider, plus Guardian-designed training built on its journalism and editorial standards. By the end, participants should hold [a recognised Level 3 content creator apprenticeship qualification](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme), along with experience on several editorial desks and a network of colleagues and mentors.

## Who Can Apply for the Digital Journalist Scheme?

The first test is [experience](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme). Applicants need [at least 2-3 years of proven experience in journalism, media or content creation](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme), and experience in one area is enough because the role includes significant training. The scheme is [not designed for applicants with no experience](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme) in at least one of the listed specialisms, which are video, audio, pictures, text, social or audience content.

The experience does not have to come from [a big newsroom](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme). Valid routes [include](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme) work for a local or regional publication, freelance journalism or media work, community or independent media, and a portfolio built through routes such as Substack.

> A degree is not required, and there is no single route into the programme, according to [the Guardian's own scheme page](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme).

There is also a [formal qualification rule](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353). Applicants need a [GCSE in Maths and English at grade C/grade 4 or above](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353), or Functional Skills at Level 2, or overseas qualifications at an equivalent level.

[Candidates with more experience](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme) are also welcome, and the scheme wants people committed to building a varied skillset.

Applicants are expected to show [strong written and verbal communication skills, an instinct for storytelling and curiosity to research information quickly, and comfort engaging with analytics to take a data-informed approach to decision-making](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme). Applicants also need [good judgment, attention to detail, and a commitment to ethical standards](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme), along with a genuine interest in journalism and current affairs, confidence contributing ideas and commitment to the Guardian's editorial values and purpose.

## Can You Apply From Outside the UK?

All applicants must [meet the residency requirements for UK apprenticeships](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-video-audio-and-pictures-pathway-47302), for example being ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years or equivalent, and must have a suitable right to work in the UK. [Visa sponsorship is not available](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353) for the programme.

For apprenticeships in England, England's [apprenticeship funding rules](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a68cabe229c578debc1a78c/Funding_Rules_2627_Version_3_Final.pdf) set out residency eligibility. To be funded, an apprentice needs [a valid and eligible residency status and the right to work in England](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a68cabe229c578debc1a78c/Funding_Rules_2627_Version_3_Final.pdf), under the rules for August 2026 to July 2027. For UK nationals, that means being [ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands or the British Overseas Territories for at least the previous 3 years](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a68cabe229c578debc1a78c/Funding_Rules_2627_Version_3_Final.pdf) on the first day of the apprenticeship.

The general test for non-UK nationals adds extra conditions, and EEA, Swiss and Irish citizens have [separate rules](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a68cabe229c578debc1a78c/Funding_Rules_2627_Version_3_Final.pdf). For non-UK nationals, the [funding rules](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a68cabe229c578debc1a78c/Funding_Rules_2627_Version_3_Final.pdf) require at least the previous 3-year period of ordinary residence in the UK and Islands, and that residence cannot have been wholly or mainly for full-time education. Non-UK nationals also need [permission to live in the UK that is not for education purposes only](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a68cabe229c578debc1a78c/Funding_Rules_2627_Version_3_Final.pdf), and ordinary residence means living in a country habitually, normally and lawfully, from choice and for a settled purpose.

Readers who found the scheme on [international opportunity sites](https://www.globalsouthopportunities.com/2026/09/26/scheme-3/) should apply the same residency test before starting an application. Under [the funding rules](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a68cabe229c578debc1a78c/Funding_Rules_2627_Version_3_Final.pdf), the general tests for UK and non-UK nationals both start from at least 3 years of ordinary residence (in the UK and Islands, or for UK nationals also the British Overseas Territories) before the apprenticeship begins, and the rules set out separate routes for groups such as Irish citizens and UK nationals who lived in the EEA or Switzerland.

## What Does the Content Creator Apprenticeship Involve?

The [Level 3 content creator apprenticeship](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme) is a Skills England standard [listed as ST0105 at level 3](https://skillsengland.education.gov.uk/apprenticeship-standards/st0105-v1-1) that describes the job as developing written and audio visual content that can be used across a variety of platforms and media, which may include social media, broadcast or print.

Training for this apprenticeship is [typically 15 months, with an end-point assessment period of typically 3 months](https://skillsengland.education.gov.uk/apprenticeship-standards/st0105-v1-1), and the grades available are fail, pass, merit and distinction. How that timetable fits within the 18-month contract is not set out on the [scheme page](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme).

The end-point assessment uses [two methods](https://skillsengland.education.gov.uk/apprenticeship-standards/st0105-v1-1), a project or campaign evaluation report with a presentation and questions, and a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence. Apprentices write a [project or campaign evaluation report of a maximum of 1500 words](https://skillsengland.education.gov.uk/apprenticeship-standards/st0105-v1-1), give a presentation with questions that lasts at least 30 minutes, and take part in a professional discussion of 60 minutes built on a portfolio of evidence. To reach that stage, apprentices need English and mathematics qualifications in line with the [apprenticeship funding rules](https://skillsengland.education.gov.uk/apprenticeship-standards/st0105-v1-1).

Typical job titles for the occupation include [content producer, multimedia executive and social media executive](https://skillsengland.education.gov.uk/apprenticeship-standards/st0105-v1-1).

## How Do You Apply, and What Goes in the Application?

Applications go through Creative Access, which is [managing applications](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme) to the scheme, and the process runs through its job board.

[Applying through Creative Access](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353) works like this:

- Log in to a Creative Access account, or register, and apply on the listing.
- Upload your CV, a cover letter and your answers to the application questions as one document.
- Write a tailored cover letter, because applications without one will not be accepted.
- Proof-read before you submit, because you cannot amend an application after sending it.
- Send any questions to Creative Access, not to the Guardian.

Every applicant answers the same first question, which asks [why you are interested in the programme and why you would be a great applicant](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353). The [second question](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-video-audio-and-pictures-pathway-47302) depends on the pathway you choose.

If the cover letter is the part you dread, read about why [the cover letter isn't dead, but AI just changed what it's for](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/cover-letter-isnt-dead-ai-changed-what-its-for-2026) before you start.

## Which of the Two Pathways Should You Choose?

There are [two separate listings](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme), and picking the right one shapes your assessment. The [text pathway](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353) is for people whose background is largely in text, copywriting, digital or audience work, including social, newsletters or SEO. The [video, audio and pictures pathway](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-video-audio-and-pictures-pathway-47302) is for people whose experience is largely in multimedia.

The choice is used to decide which [assessment centre](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-video-audio-and-pictures-pathway-47302) you are invited to, so it should reflect what you have actually done, not what you hope to learn.

- On the text pathway, you describe [your experience with written journalism](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353), what you have written, who it was for and where it was published.
- On the multimedia pathway, you describe [your experience with video, audio or photography](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-video-audio-and-pictures-pathway-47302), what you created, who it was for and what your role was in producing it.

If your work is split evenly, pick the pathway where you can name the most specific examples, since those are what the questions ask for.

## What Happens After the October 8 Deadline?

Applications closed on [Thursday 8 October 2026 at one minute to midnight](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-video-audio-and-pictures-pathway-47302), and applicants will receive an update [no later than 6 weeks after the closing date](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353).

The scheme [starts in January 2027](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-video-audio-and-pictures-pathway-47302) in London. The Guardian has also advertised for [a deputy and an assistant training editor](https://pressgazette.co.uk/news/guardian-creates-40-jobs-to-train-journalists-as-content-creators/) to help manage the scheme.

The scheme [encourages applications from under-represented groups](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353), including, but not limited to, Black, Asian and other ethnically diverse candidates, disabled people, people with the characteristic of gender reassignment, people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, carers and asylum seekers.

## How Does the Scheme Fit the Guardian's Wider Hiring?

The [fixed-term scheme jobs](https://pressgazette.co.uk/news/guardian-creates-40-jobs-to-train-journalists-as-content-creators/) sit on top of a larger plan. They are additional to [55 permanent roles being created in the UK, US and Australia over the next year](https://pressgazette.co.uk/news/guardian-creates-40-jobs-to-train-journalists-as-content-creators/) across editorial, product development, analytics and commercial teams, a plan published in [June](https://pressgazette.co.uk/publishers/nationals/guardian-to-create-55-new-jobs-in-digital-and-global-push/).

Those roles are part of a multi-year transformation programme meant to make the Guardian [more visual, digital, global and experimental](https://pressgazette.co.uk/publishers/nationals/guardian-to-create-55-new-jobs-in-digital-and-global-push/). The same plan includes a new US video team for visual investigations, data visualisations and social video, and more roles at [Guardian Studios, a hub for video-first, personality-led journalism](https://pressgazette.co.uk/publishers/nationals/guardian-to-create-55-new-jobs-in-digital-and-global-push/). The studio recently appointed former DARE Pictures founder Derren Lawford as [executive producer, development](https://www.dropmedia.co.uk/the-guardian-creates-40-digital-journalism-roles-in-new-training-scheme/), to help create new visual formats and develop on-screen talent.

> It is an exciting time to join The Guardian as we publish more and more impactful journalism that reaches audiences in new and imaginative ways around the world, editor-in-chief Katharine Viner said, according to [the Press Gazette report on the scheme](https://pressgazette.co.uk/news/guardian-creates-40-jobs-to-train-journalists-as-content-creators/).

If you are weighing the wider UK news market, compare this scheme with [the editorial job changes at Reach](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/reach-220-editorial-jobs-ai-traffic).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

This scheme is aimed at people who have [already started building relevant experience](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme) but want more range. The pay of [£48,000](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353) comes with a full-time contract, not a short placement. For a freelance, local or independent journalist with two to three years of work, the scheme combines a salary, [at least 20% of working time in training](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme) and the chance to finish with a recognised Level 3 qualification.

The trade-off is the contract. It is fixed-term for [18 months](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353), and none of the scheme pages promise a permanent job at the end. Treat it as a paid, structured way to add formats, with the chance to finish with [a recognised Level 3 qualification](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme), and plan your next step from the start.

Here is how to prepare an application:

- **Start with the hard rules.** Make sure you meet the [GCSE or equivalent grades and UK residency rules](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353) before you spend hours on the letter.
- **Pick the right pathway.** Choose the one that matches most of your published work, since [it decides your assessment centre](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme).
- **Build one document.** Put the CV, the tailored cover letter and both answers in a single file, because [the listing wants one document](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-video-audio-and-pictures-pathway-47302).
- **Name real work.** The questions ask what you made, who it was for, and either [where it ran (text)](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353) or [what your role was (multimedia)](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-video-audio-and-pictures-pathway-47302), so lead with specifics.
- **Show you want range.** The scheme is [focused on finding journalists](https://workwithus.theguardian.com/digital-journalist-scheme) who want multi-platform skills across audio, video, photography, text and audience engagement, so say which new format you want to learn and why.
- **Submit early.** The listing closed on [8 October 2026](https://opportunities.creativeaccess.org.uk/job/guardian-digital-journalist-scheme-text-pathway-47353), and you cannot edit an application once it is sent.
