Legal writing is a specialised craft. Unlike general copywriting or marketing content, every sentence carries consequences, because a misplaced qualifier in a contract can shift liability and a vague clause can cost a client a case. The work rewards precision over flourish.

At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com), we track hiring patterns across 50M job postings and analyse the skills legal employers screen for. One pattern stands out immediately: legal writer is rarely the job title on the posting. The work is advertised as paralegal, contracts specialist, compliance writer, legal content manager or technical writer, and that gap between the craft and the title is the single most useful thing to understand before you start applying.

## What Does a Legal Writer Do?

Legal writing spans several distinct roles, each with its own workflow and skill requirements.

Document drafting is the core function. Legal writers create or revise contracts, purchase agreements, non-disclosure agreements, employment terms and policy documents, usually working from templates and precedent files rather than a blank page.

Legal research support is a second pillar. Many legal writers assist senior attorneys by summarising case law, tracking regulatory changes and turning dense findings into memos that a busy partner can absorb in minutes.

Compliance and regulatory writing has grown as companies face increasing reporting obligations. This work translates statutes and rules into internal policies, training material and disclosures that non-lawyers can actually follow.

Litigation support involves drafting briefs, motions, discovery responses and trial memoranda. This is the closest legal writing gets to traditional practice, and it is the area where a law degree carries the most weight.

Contract management and templates is an emerging specialisation. Some legal writers focus on building and maintaining clause libraries so that an organisation stops drafting the same agreement from scratch every time.

## Who Hires Legal Writers?

Legal writing positions exist across a wide range of employers, and understanding where they sit changes how you apply.

Law firms remain the traditional primary employer. Large firms typically hire for research and drafting support roles that sit alongside the associate track rather than on it.

In-house legal departments at corporations, financial institutions and healthcare systems hire writers to handle contract volume and internal policy work that does not justify outside counsel rates.

Government agencies employ legal writers as staff support, regulatory specialists and policy drafters. The [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/legal/paralegals-and-legal-assistants.htm) reported that legal services accounted for 74 percent of paralegal and legal assistant employment in 2024, with local government and federal government each accounting for 5 percent, so the public sector is a smaller but real share of the market.

Legal process outsourcing firms and contract staffing agencies hire legal writers for project work, which is often the fastest way to accumulate varied samples early in a career.

Legal tech companies, document automation vendors and legal research platforms increasingly need people who understand both the law and the product, particularly for template design and help documentation.

## What Skills Do You Need?

Success as a legal writer requires a specific skill set that combines legal knowledge, writing discipline and commercial judgement.

Precision with language comes first. [O*NET OnLine](https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/27-3042.00) lists writing, defined as communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience, and reading comprehension, defined as understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents, among the essential skills for technical writers, the occupation that most closely mirrors the documentation side of legal writing.

Critical thinking is the skill that separates a competent drafter from a valuable one. O*NET describes it as using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. In practice this is what lets you spot the clause that creates an unintended obligation.

Subject-matter depth in one practice area beats shallow familiarity with many. Employers hiring for commercial contracts want someone fluent in indemnities and limitation of liability, not a generalist who has read about them.

Research fluency matters because most legal writing starts with finding the authority. You need to be comfortable with primary sources, statutes and regulatory material, and confident about when a secondary summary is not good enough to rely on.

Attention to process is underrated. Version control, redlining conventions, defined terms and internal consistency across a long document are the mechanics that separate a draft that ships from one that gets sent back.

Commercial awareness rounds it out. Understanding why a business wants a clause, and what it is willing to trade to get it, is what turns a writer into a trusted contributor rather than a pair of hands.

## What Do Legal Writers Earn?

This is where candidates are most often misled, so it is worth being precise. The federal government does not publish wage data for legal writers as a standalone occupation. What it does publish is data for the adjacent occupations that legal writers are usually hired into, and those figures differ sharply.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the median annual wage for paralegals and legal assistants was $61,010 in May 2024, which works out to $29.33 per hour. The same source put employment in that occupation at 376,200 jobs in 2024, with typical entry-level education listed as an associate's degree.

Technical writers, the occupation closest to documentation-heavy and legal tech roles, earned considerably more. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median annual wage of $91,670 for technical writers in May 2024, or $44.07 per hour, against employment of 56,400 jobs in 2024 and a typical entry requirement of a bachelor's degree.

Writers and authors sit between the two. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median annual wage of $72,270 for writers and authors in May 2024, equivalent to $34.75 per hour, with employment of 135,400 jobs in 2024.

For reference, lawyers earned a median annual wage of $151,160 in May 2024 according to the same Bureau of Labor Statistics handbook, across employment of 864,800 jobs in 2024. That gap is the reason the law degree question matters commercially and not just academically.

The practical takeaway is that your earnings depend less on calling yourself a legal writer and more on which of these job families your role is classified under. A contracts specialist hired into a technical writing band at a legal tech company is on a different pay scale than the same person hired as a paralegal at a firm.

## What Does the Job Outlook Look Like?

Growth prospects also vary by which door you come through, and the projections are not uniformly encouraging.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of paralegals and legal assistants to show little or no change from 2024 to 2034, a rate it puts at 0 percent, representing a change of 600 jobs over the decade. Technical writer employment is projected to grow 1 percent from 2024 to 2034, which the Bureau describes as slower than the average for all occupations, adding roughly 500 jobs.

Writers and authors are projected to grow 4 percent from 2024 to 2034, described as about as fast as the average for all occupations, adding 4,900 jobs. Lawyers are projected to grow at the same 4 percent rate over the decade, adding 35,900 jobs.

Flat headline projections do not mean no hiring. They mean replacement demand rather than expansion drives most openings, so competition concentrates on candidates who can demonstrate specific, verifiable capability rather than general interest.

## How Do You Break Into Legal Writing?

The route in is more practical than most candidates expect, and it rarely starts with applying to jobs that carry legal writer in the title.

Build a portfolio of real documents first. Redraft a publicly available contract and write a short note explaining what you changed and why. Summarise a recent appellate decision in a few hundred words. Three or four samples of this kind do more than any cover letter, because they let a hiring manager assess the exact skill they are buying.

Pick a practice area and go deep. Employment, commercial contracts, data protection, healthcare compliance and intellectual property all have distinct vocabularies, and depth in one is what gets you shortlisted.

Use adjacent roles as the on-ramp. Paralegal work, compliance coordination, contract administration and technical writing all put you in contact with the documents, and internal moves into dedicated writing roles are common precisely because the employer can already see your work.

Target the job titles that actually exist. Search for contracts specialist, compliance writer, legal content manager, knowledge management and proposal writer alongside paralegal, rather than relying on legal writer as your only search term.

Decide deliberately about the law degree. It is genuinely required for litigation drafting and for anything approaching legal advice, and it is genuinely optional for contract administration, legal marketing content and legal tech documentation. Given the cost and the wage figures above, treat it as an investment decision tied to the specific work you want, not a default prerequisite.

## People Also Asked

### Q: Do you need a law degree to be a legal writer?

A: Not for every role. Litigation drafting and anything that amounts to legal advice require a law degree and, in most cases, a licence. Contract administration, compliance content, legal marketing and legal tech documentation are routinely filled by people with paralegal training, subject-matter experience or a writing background instead.

### Q: How much do legal writers earn?

A: It depends on the job family your role sits in, because federal wage data does not track legal writers separately. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported May 2024 median annual wages of $61,010 for paralegals and legal assistants, $72,270 for writers and authors, and $91,670 for technical writers.

### Q: What is the fastest way to start a legal writing career?

A: Build three or four concrete writing samples in one practice area, then apply to adjacent titles such as contracts specialist, compliance writer or paralegal rather than searching only for legal writer roles. Adjacent roles put you next to the documents, and internal moves into dedicated writing work are common.
