# In-N-Out Managers Now Earn Over $200,000 and Most of Them Stay for Years

In-N-Out store managers now average over $200,000 a year and stay more than 15 years. Here is what that benchmark means for a restaurant management career.

## How much do In-N-Out managers actually earn?

A company spokesperson [confirmed to Inc. that In-N-Out store managers now earn more than $200,000 a year on average](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893). For a job in fast food, that is an extraordinary number, and it is not an outlier estimate scraped from user-submitted salary data. It came from the company itself.

The figure has been climbing for years. [Inc. noted that in 2018, Forbes reported the average In-N-Out manager made $163,000 plus profit-sharing](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893), so eight years later the average has risen by roughly a quarter. Between those two markers sits a third data point. In-N-Out owner and president Lynsi Snyder wrote in her book that [the average pay of a store manager is more than $180,000 per year, an amount that includes store profit-sharing](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788).

Profit-sharing matters to how you read all of this. When a company reports an average that includes a profit-sharing component, the number reflects store performance as well as base salary, which means a manager at a high-volume location and a manager at a quieter one are not both taking home the same figure.

> A company spokesperson [confirmed that In-N-Out store managers now earn more than $200,000 a year on average](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893).

Older reporting gives you the trend line. In an earlier account, [Money reported store manager pay at around $160,000](https://money.com/in-n-out-manager-salary/), citing the California Sun newsletter and the company's then vice president of operations. [ABC7 Los Angeles reported the same ballpark, at over $160,000](https://abc7.com/post/report-in-n-out-store-managers-earn-over-$160000-a-year/2988740/) a year. Those were the widely quoted figures for years, which is why the newer number lands as a surprise.

[Inc. also made the comparison that reframes the job](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893), noting that In-N-Out managers make more than the average California software engineer, accountant or financial adviser. That is not a statement about burgers. It is a statement about what an operator who runs a high-volume, high-standard site is worth when a company decides to pay for it.

## How does that compare with the rest of the restaurant industry?

The gap is enormous, and the federal data makes it plain. The [Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median annual wage for food service managers was $69,390 in May 2025](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/food-service-managers.htm). That is the midpoint for the whole occupation across every kind of restaurant, cafeteria and catering operation in the country.

The spread around that midpoint is worth knowing too. According to the same [occupational handbook, the lowest 10% of food service managers earned less than $45,960 and the highest 10% earned more than $107,640](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/food-service-managers.htm) in May 2025. So the In-N-Out average sits well above even the top decile of the occupation nationally.

An older federal figure shows how long this gap has persisted. When [Entrepreneur covered Snyder's book, it cited a BLS annual mean wage for restaurant food managers of $63,820](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788) at the time, alongside a Chipotle general manager average compensation of about $100,000. Even the well-paying branded competitor in that comparison came in at half the In-N-Out figure.

The occupation itself is not shrinking, which is the encouraging part if you are weighing this track. [BLS projects employment of food service managers to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/food-service-managers.htm). Demand for people who can run a site is steady. What varies wildly is what a given employer is willing to pay for it.

> The [median annual wage for food service managers was $69,390 in May 2025](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/food-service-managers.htm), roughly a third of the In-N-Out average.

If you want the fuller picture of what the role involves before you chase the pay, our [restaurant general manager career guide](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/restaurant-general-manager-career-guide) walks through the responsibilities, the skills that get people promoted and the realistic salary bands outside the headline-making employers.

## Why do In-N-Out managers stay more than 15 years?

Here is the number that should actually change how you think about this job. [Inc. reported that the average In-N-Out manager has stayed with the company for over 15 years, against a typical fast-food or quick-service restaurant manager tenure of just one to two years](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893).

Read that comparison slowly. A sector famous for churn has a company inside it where the average manager has been in the building longer than most software engineers have been in their industry. The [company spokesperson told Inc. that In-N-Out continues to see comparatively low turnover across both management and non-management staff](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893), and framed that stability as part of why service quality holds up.

Pay is the obvious explanation, but it is not the only one, and it is probably not the first one. The spokesperson described a founding philosophy from Harry and Esther Snyder built on treating associates like family and paying higher-than-normal wages, according to [Inc.](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893), with a continuing focus on competitive pay, strong benefits, workplace culture and internal growth.

The structural piece is promotion. In her book, Snyder describes a grandfather who understood that developing loyal workers meant giving them promotions, more responsibility and more pay, according to [Entrepreneur](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788). The same account notes that [each role at the company comes with its own pay raise and job level](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788), which turns a job with a reputation for being a dead end into a ladder with visible rungs.

Then there is the growth pace. [Entrepreneur reported that the company follows a slow growth philosophy, deciding to grow only as fast as it can develop quality leaders](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788). Most chains do the opposite, opening sites and then scrambling to staff them, which is exactly the condition that produces a revolving door of managers.

Benefits fill in the rest. Earlier reporting from [Money listed 401(k) plans, paid time off, healthcare plans and employee discounts](https://money.com/in-n-out-manager-salary/) alongside the pay. None of that is exotic. It is simply a full package in a sector where a full package is not the norm.

## How do you get to a job like that?

The entry requirements are the most quietly remarkable part of the story. [ABC7 Los Angeles reported that a college degree or previous management experience are not required](https://abc7.com/post/report-in-n-out-store-managers-earn-over-$160000-a-year/2988740/) at In-N-Out. The path is internal, and it starts at the counter.

[Entrepreneur described the progression in detail](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788). New hires learn to greet customers and take orders accurately at the counter and the drive-through. Produce handling comes next, which means coring and slicing tomatoes, peeling and dicing potatoes, hand-leafing lettuce and chopping onion. After that comes hosting in the dining room. Only then do employees get trusted with the burgers, which Snyder frames as a genuine achievement rather than a consolation prize.

That sequence is the actual mechanism behind the tenure figure. To become a manager, [Entrepreneur reported that you must work up from the bottom and learn every role necessary to run a restaurant](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788). A company that promotes that way cannot hire a manager from outside, which means the only supply of managers is people who stayed.

Starting wages are the part most likely to be out of date. [Money reported starting pay of at least $13 per hour](https://money.com/in-n-out-manager-salary/) in its account, and [ABC7 reported the same $13 an hour starting figure](https://abc7.com/post/report-in-n-out-store-managers-earn-over-$160000-a-year/2988740/). Both of those are older numbers from a very different wage environment, so treat them as historical rather than current. California's fast-food wage floor has moved substantially since, and we covered what that shift did to restaurant jobs in our piece on [California's fast-food wage floor and restaurant jobs](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/california-20-dollar-fast-food-wage-restaurant-jobs-2026).

## Where do the published pay numbers disagree?

If you search this topic you will find four different figures, and all four are defensible. The current one is the [more than $200,000 average a spokesperson gave Inc.](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893). The one that circulated before it is the [more than $180,000 average including store profit-sharing from Snyder's own book](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788). Before that came [the $163,000 average Forbes reported in 2018](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893), and behind that the [$160,000 figure Money attributed to the California Sun](https://money.com/in-n-out-manager-salary/) and the [over $160,000 figure carried by ABC7](https://abc7.com/post/report-in-n-out-store-managers-earn-over-$160000-a-year/2988740/).

They disagree for three ordinary reasons, and knowing them is useful anywhere you research pay. First, vintage. These figures span years, and a wage number without a date attached is close to useless. Second, composition. Some figures explicitly include profit-sharing and some do not say, and a profit-sharing average will always run higher than a base-salary average. Third, source type. A company-confirmed average and an aggregated estimate from public salary listings are measuring different populations, and the second one tends to run lower because it captures newer and lower-volume managers.

> The [average In-N-Out manager has stayed with the company for over 15 years](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893), against one to two years at a typical quick-service restaurant.

The practical rule is to quote the figure with its owner and its year attached. If you walk into an interview citing a number without either, you are one follow-up question away from losing the room.

## What it means for your next move, and where to start?

The first lesson is that the ceiling in food service is set by the employer, not by the industry. The [national median for food service managers is $69,390](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/food-service-managers.htm), and one company pays roughly triple that for the same job title. If you have been told that restaurant management tops out, the honest answer is that it tops out at most employers, which is a very different claim.

The second lesson is that tenure is a signal you can check before you take a job. The [15-year average manager tenure](https://www.inc.com/amaya-nichole/in-n-out-managers-now-earn-more-than-200000-dollars-a-year-real-surprise-how-long-they-stay/91404893) is a number that no amount of recruiting copy can fake. When you interview anywhere in hospitality or retail, ask how long the current managers have been there and how many were promoted from inside. A company that cannot answer quickly is telling you something.

The third lesson is about the shape of the ladder. [Each role carrying its own pay raise and job level](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788) is the difference between a job and a career track. Ask a prospective employer what the next three steps are, what each one pays and how long people typically take to move between them. If those answers do not exist, your raise will depend on you asking rather than on the system working.

The fourth is about patience, and it is the least comfortable one. A [path that requires learning every station before you run one](https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/in-n-out-owner-lynsi-snyder-we-pay-well-managers-180k/457788) is slow by design. The payoff is real, but it is measured in years, not months. If you want that outcome, the trade is committing to one employer long enough for the compounding to happen, which is the opposite of the job-hopping advice that dominates most career content.

Finally, take the benchmark with you rather than the brand. You are almost certainly not going to work at In-N-Out. What you can do is use the numbers as a measuring stick when you evaluate the next hospitality or retail management offer you get. Ask about profit-sharing. Ask about the internal promotion rate. Ask what the top-performing manager in the region earned last year. Those three questions will tell you more about your ten-year earnings than the starting salary will.
