India's global capability centres, the in-house hubs that global companies run in India, are projected to grow from [approximately 2.3 million employees today to 3.3-3.7 million by 2031](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report), adding [1-1.4 million net jobs](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/10/gccs-in-india-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-by-2031-embark-report) in a new forecast from [Embark, a GCC set-up firm backed by the Embassy Group](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report). It is a projection, not a list of open vacancies, and Embark expects automation and slower backfilling to [moderate demand for routine roles](https://cxotoday.com/others/embark-report-india-gccs-to-add-up-to-1-4m-net-jobs-and-170m-sq-ft-office-space-by-2031/) even as specialist hiring grows. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers working in or aiming at Indian tech and finance jobs, this guide sets the forecast against other GCC data, then covers which cities, functions, skills and pay trends matter most.

## What Does the Embark Report Actually Project?

The study is titled [India GCCs in the AI Era: Implications for Workforce Growth and Office Demand](https://www.expresscomputer.in/news/indias-gccs-projected-to-add-1-1-4-mn-jobs-by-2031-says-embark-report/140324/), and it was released in Bengaluru on [Oct. 23, 2026](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report). Alongside the jobs figure, it expects [150-170 million square feet (sq ft) of incremental office demand by 2031](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/10/gccs-in-india-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-by-2031-embark-report).

The forecast rests on [a survey of 100 India GCC leaders](https://www.deccanherald.com/business/companies/india-global-capability-centres-to-add-14-million-jobs-by-2031-report-4192470), plus executive interviews and market data. [92% of surveyed leaders had moved beyond selective AI adoption](https://www.expresscomputer.in/news/indias-gccs-projected-to-add-1-1-4-mn-jobs-by-2031-says-embark-report/140324/), yet realised productivity gains remained below 15%.

The arithmetic behind the net figure has three parts. Automation, slower backfilling and role consolidation are expected to [moderate demand for routine roles by 0.4-0.5 million](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report), while expansion of existing mandates and new GCC setups (combined 1.2-1.5 million) and AI-led role creation (around 0.3 million) [will more than offset this impact](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report).

Most of the growth is expected inside centres that already exist. Existing GCCs are expected to account for [around 80% of incremental workforce additions](https://www.deccanherald.com/business/companies/india-global-capability-centres-to-add-14-million-jobs-by-2031-report-4192470), as mature centres move [from delivery-oriented mandates to ownership of entire functions, products, platforms and business outcomes](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/10/gccs-in-india-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-by-2031-embark-report).

## Who Is Embark, and Why Does Office Space Sit Inside a Jobs Forecast?

Embark was [established in 2025](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report) as a service provider that helps global companies set up and expand GCCs in India, and it draws on [the workplace and infrastructure backing of the Embassy Group](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report), which the release calls [a pioneer in Indian real estate with over three decades of experience](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report). Its services cover [strategy, consulting, talent and workplace solutions](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report), process work and back office operations.

The study also has a section on [Implications for the Real Estate Market](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report). Its conclusion is that GCC expansion [will remain structurally office-accretive through 2031](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report).

The workplace findings also describe the day-to-day setting. Collaboration and shared spaces are forecast to rise [from 27% to 55% of workplace allocation by 2031](https://www.expresscomputer.in/news/indias-gccs-projected-to-add-1-1-4-mn-jobs-by-2031-says-embark-report/140324/), as companies adapt to hybrid work, peak-day attendance and demand for specialist facilities.

> AI is reshaping GCCs from delivery centres into strategic capability hubs. India’s opportunity is to turn AI adoption into measurable business value, driving demand for specialist talent and supporting continued workforce and office growth through 2031, Embark CEO and co-founder Aravind Maiya said in [Embark's release](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report).

## How Does This Forecast Compare With Other GCC Projections?

Current counts are close. India hosts [2,117 GCCs across 3,728 GCC units](https://zinnov.com/centers-of-excellence/zinnov-nasscom-india-gcc-landscape-2026-report/), with data as of March 2026, in the FY2026 landscape study co-published by [Nasscom and the research firm Zinnov](https://zinnov.com/centers-of-excellence/zinnov-nasscom-india-gcc-landscape-2026-report/). That centre count is up [32% since FY2021](https://zinnov.com/centers-of-excellence/zinnov-nasscom-india-gcc-landscape-2026-report/), and the same study puts the workforce at [2.36 million professionals](https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/story/the-big-boom-how-indias-gcc-story-hits-2030-target-4-years-early-530265-2026-05-07).

Revenue has also run ahead of plan. GCC revenues are [around $98.4 billion in FY26, inching close to the $100-billion milestone that Nasscom had projected for 2030](https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/story/the-big-boom-how-indias-gcc-story-hits-2030-target-4-years-early-530265-2026-05-07).

Where forecasters part ways is the end point. In November 2025, [NLB Services projected 1.3 million new job roles](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report), taking the total GCC workforce to 3.46 million by 2030. That study also expects [an 11% increase in jobs in 2026 alone](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report), largely due to GCCs moving past AI experiments into actual implementation. Older industry and government estimates, collected in a June 2026 [Observer Research Foundation (ORF)](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work) paper and made when the FY2024 workforce stood at [around 1.9 million professionals](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work), put 2030 employment at [at least 2.5 million and, under more optimistic assumptions, almost 4-4.5 million](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work).

The spread matters for job seekers. [The wide range of projections is important](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work) because it reflects genuine uncertainty about the pace and employment intensity of AI adoption. Embark's own projection is [3.3-3.7 million by 2031](https://www.expresscomputer.in/news/indias-gccs-projected-to-add-1-1-4-mn-jobs-by-2031-says-embark-report/140324/), one year later than the industry and government estimates ORF cites.

## Where Will the New GCC Jobs Be Located?

Big cities stay on top. About [90% of new GCC setups are expected in Tier I cities](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/10/gccs-in-india-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-by-2031-embark-report), and Bengaluru and Hyderabad currently account for [67% of Tier 1 GCC leasing](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report). Tier II and III cities are expected to add [targeted capacity through hub-and-spoke models, particularly for cost-sensitive delivery, specialised talent access and operational resilience](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report). [Tier II and III locations could gain prominence](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report) because of lower attrition and lower office and talent costs, NLB Services found, along with [Hyderabad and Bengaluru leading in AI leadership maturity](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report) for both vision and budget ownership.

Hyderabad shows what that scale looks like on the ground. The city had [around 515 GCCs as of March 2026](https://yourstory.com/2026/09/hyderabad-houses-515-gccs-to-add-50-70-in-next-1-year-report), about 20% of India's total, in a joint study by the industry body [FICCI and the property consultant Anarock](https://yourstory.com/2026/09/hyderabad-houses-515-gccs-to-add-50-70-in-next-1-year-report). The same study expects [50-70 additional GCCs across technology, engineering, BFSI, life sciences, analytics, consulting and digital operations](https://yourstory.com/2026/09/hyderabad-houses-515-gccs-to-add-50-70-in-next-1-year-report) within a year.

Chennai offers a recent single-employer example. [Starbucks plans its first India GCC in Chennai](https://yourstory.com/2026/09/starbucks-set-up-first-india-gcc-in-chennai-plans-to-hire-800), which is expected to create 800 new jobs, and its chief technology officer pointed to [the availability of skilled talent in Chennai and lower attrition rates](https://yourstory.com/2026/09/starbucks-set-up-first-india-gcc-in-chennai-plans-to-hire-800) among the reasons.

New entrants are expected too. Around [3,144 viable Global 5000 companies have yet to set up a GCC in India](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/10/gccs-in-india-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-by-2031-embark-report), which Embark reads as 590-640 new setups by 2031. Mid-market firms are expected to make up [about 28% of new setups, aided by lower-capital entry models such as Nano GCCs of 5-100 specialists](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report).

## Which Skills Will GCCs Hire For?

The skills list is specific. GCCs will increasingly need [talent in AI, data, platform engineering, cybersecurity, solution architecture, governance, observability and domain-specialist roles](https://www.deccanherald.com/business/companies/india-global-capability-centres-to-add-14-million-jobs-by-2031-report-4192470), making workforces more capability-dense. India's AI-specialist talent pool [could reach 800,000-900,000 by 2031](https://www.expresscomputer.in/news/indias-gccs-projected-to-add-1-1-4-mn-jobs-by-2031-says-embark-report/140324/).

Job titles fill in that list. New roles in NLB Services' study include [cybersecurity and AI governance architects, prompt engineers, GenAI product owners, and AI policy and risk strategists](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report), and it lists [L1 IT support, legacy application development, manual QA, and on-prem infrastructure management](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report) as legacy roles being phased out. [Nearly 70% of GCCs were already investing in Generative AI in 2025, while over 60% planned to set up dedicated AI safety and governance teams by 2026](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report), in NLB Services' November 2025 study. Around 75% [aimed to embed GenAI in daily operations within a year](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report).

India already has a deep bench here. It accounts for [nearly 28% of the global GCC AI talent pool](https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/story/the-big-boom-how-indias-gcc-story-hits-2030-target-4-years-early-530265-2026-05-07), second only to the US. Over [1,200 Indian GCCs now host AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work), and some 250 run dedicated centres of excellence.

Adoption is still ahead of payoff, which shapes the work itself. The barriers Embark names are [data readiness, workflow redesign, governance, role readiness, and credible value measurement](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report). Hiring shows the same gap, since [AI adoption in hiring has crossed 90% of GCCs](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/08/more-than-half-gccs-signal-increased-hiring-fy27-report) while a quarter of adopters still cannot quantify returns.

## What Does the Forecast Mean for Tech and Finance Workers?

Tech and finance centres are expected to drive most of the new office demand. BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) and TMT (technology, media and telecommunications) are expected to account for [around 54% of incremental GCC office demand](https://www.expresscomputer.in/news/indias-gccs-projected-to-add-1-1-4-mn-jobs-by-2031-says-embark-report/140324/). That share measures office space, not headcount.

For tech workers, the shift is from support to ownership. Many Indian centres now own mandates across [product engineering, cybersecurity, analytics, cloud, finance, risk, compliance, and innovation](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work), and 71% of surveyed leaders [expect their centres to take on broader functional ownership](https://cxotoday.com/others/embark-report-india-gccs-to-add-up-to-1-4m-net-jobs-and-170m-sq-ft-office-space-by-2031/). Separately, [15% anticipate global leadership roles moving to India](https://www.deccanherald.com/business/companies/india-global-capability-centres-to-add-14-million-jobs-by-2031-report-4192470).

For finance workers, the relevant functions already sit inside many centres. Technology and BFSI [remain dominant](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work) across India's GCC sector, and a single centre may host [software engineering, data science, finance, HR, procurement, cybersecurity, compliance, and product design](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work). The same research names [compliance automation, AI product management, and human-machine workflow design](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work) among the tasks now emerging.

Other sectors are rising too. Retail and consumer packaged goods are projected to be among the fastest-growing sectors in office-space demand, at [a 17-21% CAGR](https://www.deccanherald.com/business/companies/india-global-capability-centres-to-add-14-million-jobs-by-2031-report-4192470).

## How Do Freshers and Mid-Career Workers Fit In?

Gross displacement is [approximately 40,183 jobs by 2030](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work) in ORF's most conservative scenario and about 150,686 in its most aggressive one, measured against an optimistic baseline of 4.5 million GCC workers. Those numbers are small next to India's labour force, but they [matter for the formal, high-skill entry routes](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work) through which engineering, BPM and early-career technology workers join global teams. With new AI-augmented roles offsetting part of the loss, net displacement falls to [between 24,110 and 120,549 jobs](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work) across ORF's scenarios, at reinstatement rates of 20% or 40%.

Job design is already changing at the junior and mid levels. [27% of mid-level and 25% of junior tech roles are being redesigned](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report) as AI copilots and automation tools become mainstream. Quality is the other filter, since [only 42.6% of graduates meet industry employability standards](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/08/more-than-half-gccs-signal-increased-hiring-fy27-report) in the annual GCC survey by Taggd with CII. Offer-to-join conversion has [improved to ~80%](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/08/more-than-half-gccs-signal-increased-hiring-fy27-report), but the funnel still leaks at every stage.

> The policy concern, therefore, is not aggregate sectoral decline, but the possible compression of new formal high-skill opportunities, especially for early-career workers, according to [the ORF research paper](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work).

## What Do GCCs Pay, and Is Hiring Picking Up Now?

GCCs are [now the highest-paying segment in India's technology labour market](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/08/more-than-half-gccs-signal-increased-hiring-fy27-report), with projected increments of 10.4% for 2026 in the Taggd and CII survey published in August. Engineering research and development (ER&D) functions are seeing [salary increases in double digits while non-ER&D functions are in mid single digits](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/08/more-than-half-gccs-signal-increased-hiring-fy27-report), so the function you join shapes the raise you can expect.

Hiring intent is rising. [52% of GCCs plan to expand their workforce in FY27, up from 47%](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/08/more-than-half-gccs-signal-increased-hiring-fy27-report) in the previous fiscal year. Hiring is now [governed by budget, forecast, and capability roadmaps rather than backfill urgency](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/08/more-than-half-gccs-signal-increased-hiring-fy27-report). The year was not one-way, though, as 101 new GCCs opened in 2025 while [around 5,500-6,000 roles were also lost](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/08/more-than-half-gccs-signal-increased-hiring-fy27-report), described as a restructuring in which centres anchored on cost arbitrage are contracting.

GCCs now out-hire IT services firms. In FY26, [GCCs hired 180,000 candidates which was 60,000 more than the IT services companies](https://yourstory.com/2026/09/starbucks-set-up-first-india-gcc-in-chennai-plans-to-hire-800), in data from the recruitment firm Xpheno.

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

The forecast is good news with a condition attached. The projections from NLB Services, [the industry and government estimates ORF cites](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work) and Embark all expect the GCC workforce to keep growing, and both [NLB](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report) and [Embark](https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20261023io79601/indias-gccs-to-add-1-14-million-jobs-and-drive-150-170-million-sq-ft-of-office-demand-by-2031-embark-report) expect routine roles to shrink. The skills these forecasts share are a useful target.

- **Pick a specialist lane.** The skills Embark names are [AI, data, platform engineering, cybersecurity, solution architecture, governance and observability](https://www.expresscomputer.in/news/indias-gccs-projected-to-add-1-1-4-mn-jobs-by-2031-says-embark-report/140324/). Choose one and build visible proof, such as a project, a certification or work you can [show on your resume and in interviews](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/how-to-show-ai-skills-on-your-resume-and-in-interviews).
- **Move away from tasks on the phase-out list.** If your work is mostly [L1 IT support, legacy application development, manual QA, or on-prem infrastructure management](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2025/11/ai-adoption-gccs-new-jobs-report), start shifting toward automation, cloud or quality engineering that uses AI tools.
- **Target cities with depth.** Bengaluru and Hyderabad hold [67% of Tier 1 GCC leasing](https://cxotoday.com/others/embark-report-india-gccs-to-add-up-to-1-4m-net-jobs-and-170m-sq-ft-office-space-by-2031/), while Starbucks [plans its first India GCC in Chennai](https://yourstory.com/2026/09/starbucks-set-up-first-india-gcc-in-chennai-plans-to-hire-800).
- **Finance professionals, add a data layer.** Many Indian centres now own mandates in [finance, risk, compliance and analytics](https://orfonline.org/research/capability-in-the-age-of-ai-india-s-gccs-and-the-future-of-white-collar-work), so pair domain knowledge with data tools to stand out.
- **Freshers, close the readiness gap first.** With only a minority of graduates meeting [industry employability standards](https://yourstory.com/enterprise-story/2026/08/more-than-half-gccs-signal-increased-hiring-fy27-report), build internships and real project work alongside the degree, starting with the [basics employers say new graduates lack](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/new-graduates-missing-basics-skills-based-hiring-what-to-learn).
