Nearly 550 Innodata staff in India were reportedly logged out of laptops and had IDs deactivated Oct 26, plus Philippine cuts. What happened, what the law says.

[Innodata India Pvt Ltd](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html) has reportedly laid off [nearly 550 employees in India](https://www.hrkatha.com/news/layoff/innodata-layoffs-hit-india-and-the-philippines/) on 26 October, 2026, and staff in the Philippines also lost jobs. Workers lost access to company laptops and official IDs during the working day, and termination emails then [landed in their personal inboxes](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827). The US-based AI data company has [not publicly confirmed the total number of employees affected](https://www.hrkatha.com/news/layoff/innodata-layoffs-hit-india-and-the-philippines/), and [Innodata hasn't commented](https://www.tikr.com/blog/innodata-sinks-28-on-reported-abrupt-layoffs-of-550-in-india-official-ids-deactivated) on the cuts. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers in India's tech and AI services workforce, this piece sets out the reason given in the termination emails, why the reason given in those emails worried investors, how much of Innodata's revenue rests on two customers, and what India's Industrial Relations Code sets out on retrenchment notice and pay.

## What Happened to Innodata Staff in India on Monday?

The day started like any other. Workers [logged into their systems and marked their attendance before starting their day](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html), and one of those affected was [a 28-year-old engineer in Delhi](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html).

Soon after, word spread that the company's [Philippines team, including raters, quality experts, team leads, and operational manager, had been fired during a Zoom call meeting](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html). Staff in India then checked the HR portal and found [their payslips had been generated, with the portal mentioning October 26 as the official date of resignation and the last working day](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html).

The lockouts came next. By lunchtime, [workers gradually started losing access to company laptops](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html), and the termination notices were [delivered to personal email addresses because they no longer had access to Innodata's systems](https://www.aol.com/articles/why-innodata-stock-crashed-today-170702000.html). One employee said staff [frantically reached out to managers, who were also taken aback at the news](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html).

To work out who else had been hit, employees set up [a WhatsApp group to connect with colleagues and establish how widely the layoffs had affected the workforce](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827), many of them unsure whether they still had a job.

## How Many Workers Lost Their Jobs, and Has Innodata Confirmed a Number?

The nearly 550 figure [traces back to India Today](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html), which [learnt that nearly 550 employees in India were affected by the layoffs on October 26](https://www.indiatoday.in/jobs/story/innodata-layoffs-nearly-550-india-employees-fired-philippines-job-cuts-microsoft-3025864-2026-10-27). Pink slips went out [without prior intimation](https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/technology/innodata-layoffs-ai-data-services-company-fires-550-employees-in-india/articleshow/135254433.cms).

The employees' WhatsApp group had [nearly 500 members by evening](https://www.hrkatha.com/news/layoff/innodata-layoffs-hit-india-and-the-philippines/), many of them unsure of their employment status.

Neither number comes from the company, which [has not publicly disclosed the overall scale](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827) of the cuts, including in the Philippines.

For scale, Innodata had [10,107 employees, 10,020 of which were full-time](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm) at the end of 2025, so the cuts are [more than 5% of the company's workforce](https://www.aol.com/articles/why-innodata-stock-crashed-today-170702000.html). [No Innodata employees were represented by a labor union](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm) in its 2025 annual filing.

## What Did the Termination Emails Tell Workers?

The emails gave a business reason. A termination email set the last working day as [26 October 2026, citing a reduction in the business assignment for which the individual had been engaged](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827), and stressed that the decision was [linked to operational requirements rather than individual performance](https://www.hrkatha.com/news/layoff/innodata-layoffs-hit-india-and-the-philippines/).

The money side came with a condition. Under the email's terms, a [demand draft had been prepared](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827) for the full and final settlement, and [the original document would be handed over after the employee returned company assets](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827).

Records were the next problem. Workers were [unable to download payslips or complete exit formalities as access to HR portals was revoked](https://www.hrkatha.com/news/layoff/innodata-layoffs-hit-india-and-the-philippines/), and one employee raised concerns about [the lack of an opportunity to retrieve essential records](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827) before access was withdrawn.

## What Happened to Innodata Workers in the Philippines?

People identifying themselves as Innodata employees in the Philippines [described job losses on the same day](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827). Workers there described [mass layoffs](https://www.hrkatha.com/news/layoff/innodata-layoffs-hit-india-and-the-philippines/).

Posts on Reddit [referred to cuts involving workers associated with the MUPSL project](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827), and online posts suggested the cuts were [linked to declining service volumes from a major client project](https://www.hrkatha.com/news/layoff/innodata-layoffs-hit-india-and-the-philippines/). Those accounts [have not independently established the total number of employees affected](https://www.bwpeople.in/article/innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-cuts-reported-in-philippines-630827).

A [major portion of Innodata's operations is carried on in India, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm), while its customers are [primarily located in North America and Europe](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm).

## What Work Does Innodata Do for Big Tech Clients?

Innodata is [headquartered in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html), and was [founded in 1988](https://www.hrkatha.com/news/layoff/innodata-layoffs-hit-india-and-the-philippines/). It helps technology companies [build and improve AI systems through data labelling, model training, evaluation and safety testing](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html).

The company describes its mission as [providing the data, evaluation frameworks, and human expertise required to build AI systems that can be trusted at scale](https://www.webdisclosure.com/press-release/innodata-to-report-third-quarter-2026-results-TbPwartEzlQ). Customers listed on its website include [Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Snowflake, Boeing and Deloitte](https://www.news18.com/india/laptops-logged-out-official-ids-deactivated-innodata-lays-off-nearly-550-employees-in-india-ws-lrt-10400065.html).

[Many Innodata employees hold advanced degrees](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm) in fields such as law, business, technology, medicine and social sciences.

## Why Did Innodata Shares Fall So Sharply on Tuesday?

The size of the fall depends on when it was measured. In premarket trading on Tuesday, shares [fell 16% to $49.88](https://seekingalpha.com/news/4657885-innodata-stock-falls-as-report-flags-layoffs-in-india-philippines). Later the stock was [down 26.4% as of 12:26 p.m ET](https://www.aol.com/articles/why-innodata-stock-crashed-today-170702000.html). By TIKR's count, the stock [sank 28%](https://www.tikr.com/blog/innodata-sinks-28-on-reported-abrupt-layoffs-of-550-in-india-official-ids-deactivated) on Tuesday.

Selling was tied to [how the cuts reportedly happened, and the reason given for them](https://www.tikr.com/blog/innodata-sinks-28-on-reported-abrupt-layoffs-of-550-in-india-official-ids-deactivated), in the TIKR market note. The reported ramp-down [raises the possibility that customer work is shrinking](https://www.tikr.com/blog/innodata-sinks-28-on-reported-abrupt-layoffs-of-550-in-india-official-ids-deactivated), though it does not show which customer, how much revenue is at stake, or whether the cut is temporary, TIKR noted.

Innodata [ended Monday at about 40x forward earnings](https://www.tikr.com/blog/innodata-sinks-28-on-reported-abrupt-layoffs-of-550-in-india-official-ids-deactivated) and was closer to 29x after the drop.

## How Much Does Innodata Depend on a Few Big Customers?

Heavily, on its own figures. [One customer in the DDS segment generated approximately 58% and 48% of the Company’s total revenues](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm) in the 2025 and 2024 fiscal years.

In the second quarter, the largest customer's share [fell to approximately 37% from 58% a year earlier](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm), while [another customer generated approximately 34%](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm), so [the two largest made up 71% of second-quarter revenue](https://www.tikr.com/blog/innodata-sinks-28-on-reported-abrupt-layoffs-of-550-in-india-official-ids-deactivated).

[Total revenues were $92.1 million and $58.4 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm) for the second quarters of 2026 and 2025, and the [increase was primarily due to higher volume for AI data engineering services from existing customer programs](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm). For the first six months of 2026, the [$29.5 million increase in direct operating costs](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm) included [$24.6 million from direct and indirect labor-related costs](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm), primarily driven by [new hires, salary increases, stock-based compensation expense, severance and third-party delivery resources](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm).

For the first six months of 2026 and 2025, [total revenues were $182.2 million and $116.7 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm), an [increase of $65.5 million or approximately 56%](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm). Over those same six-month periods, [one customer generated approximately 46% and 59% of the Company's total revenues](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm), and [another customer generated approximately 26%](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926092021/inod-20260630x10q.htm) in the first half of 2026.

The company has flagged this exact risk. Its contracts [generally do not obligate customers to purchase services in future periods](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm). In the filing's own words, its customer agreements are [generally terminable by our customer upon 30 to 90 days' notice](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm). The same annual filing warns that [the loss of these customers or a significant variation in the volume of work performed for these customers may have a material adverse effect](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm) on the business.

> We may lose one or more of these customers, or our other major customers, as a result of our failure to meet or satisfy our customer’s requirements, the completion or termination of a project or engagement, or the customer’s selection of another service provider, according to [the Innodata annual report](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/903651/000110465926020655/inod-20251231x10k.htm).

## What Does Indian Law Say About Retrenchment Notice and Pay?

The rules now sit in the [Industrial Relations Code, 2020](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf). The government brought the 4 Labour Codes into effect [starting 21 November 2025](https://www.ey.com/content/dam/ey-unified-site/ey-com/en-in/alerts-hub/2025/11/new-labour-codes-implemented-across-the-country-effective-21-november-2025.pdf), and the codes [replace 29 existing central labour laws](https://www.ey.com/content/dam/ey-unified-site/ey-com/en-in/alerts-hub/2025/11/new-labour-codes-implemented-across-the-country-effective-21-november-2025.pdf), a change also weighed in [whether India's new labour codes hit salary hikes](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/india-new-labour-codes-salary-hikes-2026).

Section 70 of the code sets three conditions before a worker with [continuous service for not less than one year](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf) can be retrenched.

- Notice: the worker has been given [one month's notice in writing indicating the reasons for retrenchment and the period of notice has expired, or the worker has been paid in lieu of such notice, wages for the period of the notice](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf).
- Compensation: paid at the time of retrenchment, [equivalent to fifteen days' average pay, or average pay of such days as may be notified by the appropriate Government, for every completed year of continuous service or any part thereof in excess of six months](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf).
- Government notice: [notice in such manner as may be prescribed is served on the appropriate Government or such authority as may be specified by the appropriate Government by notification](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf).

The definitions decide who is covered. Among other exclusions, a worker under the code does not include anyone [employed mainly in a managerial or administrative capacity](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf) and anyone [employed in a supervisory capacity drawing wages exceeding eighteen thousand rupees](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf) (about $189) [per month or an amount as may be notified by the Central Government from time to time](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf).

Retrenchment also does not include [termination of the service of the worker as a result of the non-renewal of the contract of employment between the employer and the worker concerned on its expiry or of such contract being terminated under a stipulation in that behalf contained therein](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf), or [termination of service of the worker as a result of completion of tenure of fixed term employment](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf).

## What Is the Worker Re-Skilling Fund, and Who Pays Into It?

The code also provides for a second payment. Under Section 83, the fund shall consist of [the contribution of the employer of an industrial establishment an amount equal to fifteen days wages last drawn by the worker immediately before the retrenchment, or such other number of days as may be notified by the Central Government, for every retrenched worker in case of retrenchment only](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf).

The appropriate Government [shall, by notification, set up a fund to be called the worker re-skilling fund](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf). The fund [shall be utilised by crediting fifteen days wages last drawn by the worker to his account who is retrenched, within forty-five days of such retrenchment, in such manner as may be prescribed](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf). The fund exists [to assist the retrenched workers in learning new skills](https://www.ey.com/content/dam/ey-unified-site/ey-com/en-in/alerts-hub/2025/11/new-labour-codes-implemented-across-the-country-effective-21-november-2025.pdf).

Chapter X of the code applies to an industrial establishment [(not being an establishment of a seasonal character or in which work is performed only intermittently) in which not less than three hundred workers, or such higher number of workers as may be notified by the appropriate Government, were employed on an average per working day in the preceding twelve months](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf). For that chapter, an [industrial establishment means a factory, a mine or a plantation](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf) as defined in the Factories Act, 1948, the Mines Act, 1952 and the Plantations Labour Act, 1951.

## When Does Innodata Report Next?

The next scheduled moment is earnings. Innodata's [Third Quarter 2026 results](https://www.webdisclosure.com/press-release/innodata-to-report-third-quarter-2026-results-TbPwartEzlQ) are due [after the market closes on Thursday, November 5, 2026](https://www.webdisclosure.com/press-release/innodata-to-report-third-quarter-2026-results-TbPwartEzlQ), with an [investor conference call for 5:00 PM Eastern time](https://www.webdisclosure.com/press-release/innodata-to-report-third-quarter-2026-results-TbPwartEzlQ) the same day.

The third-quarter results are [the first real chance to hear from management](https://www.tikr.com/blog/innodata-sinks-28-on-reported-abrupt-layoffs-of-550-in-india-official-ids-deactivated), by TIKR's account. Risks Innodata names include that [contracts may be terminated by customers](https://www.webdisclosure.com/press-release/innodata-to-report-third-quarter-2026-results-TbPwartEzlQ) and a [potential inability to replace projects that are completed, canceled or reduced](https://www.webdisclosure.com/press-release/innodata-to-report-third-quarter-2026-results-TbPwartEzlQ).

## What This Means for Laid-Off Innodata Workers, and What Should You Do Next?

The clearest lesson from Monday is about records, not rumours. Once access was cut, the termination email and the demand draft became the paper trail that matters.

- **Read Section 70 in full.** The conditions are set out above in the [code's own words](https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2020/Industrial%20Relations%20Code,%202020.pdf).
- **Sell the skill, not the client.** Innodata sells [human expertise](https://www.webdisclosure.com/press-release/innodata-to-report-third-quarter-2026-results-TbPwartEzlQ) for AI work, so list the tasks you did, such as rating, quality checks or evaluation, on a CV rather than the client project, a step that fits [a job search with AI after a layoff](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/job-search-with-ai-after-a-layoff).
