# January Brings Wave of Job Cuts

Over 100 companies including Amazon, FedEx, and General Motors filed WARN notices for January 2026 layoffs. The cuts reflect AI adoption, shareholder priorities, and economic restructuring rather than pure recession fears.

## Over 100 Companies File WARN Notices

The new year arrives with bad news for thousands of workers as more than 100 companies filed Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notices indicating mass layoffs scheduled for January 2026, according to [WARNTracker.com](https://warntracker.com/). Major employers including [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/), which plans to cut between 1,001 and 2,500 workers, lead the list alongside [FedEx](https://www.fedex.com/), [General Motors](https://www.gm.com/), [Nike](https://www.nike.com/), [Wells Fargo](https://www.wellsfargo.com/), [Verizon](https://www.verizon.com/), and [McDonald's](https://www.mcdonalds.com/). The WARN Act requires employers to provide 60 days advance notice before mass layoffs, defined as affecting at least 50 employees during a 30-day period or 500 employees regardless of workforce size.

The January filings span retail giants, financial institutions, technology firms, manufacturing plants, and healthcare providers, painting a troubling picture across virtually every sector of the economy. According to [Newsweek](https://www.newsweek.com/), the complete list includes companies from American Signature and Augusta Sportswear to Louis Vuitton USA and [Spirit Airlines](https://www.spirit.com/). The breadth of industries affected signals that these cuts aren't confined to struggling sectors but represent a broader recalibration of workforce planning across the American economy.

## 2025's Record-Breaking Layoff Year

These January cuts extend a brutal 2025 that saw U.S. employers announce 1.17 million job cuts through November, the highest level since 2020's pandemic-driven layoffs, according to outplacement firm [Challenger, Gray & Christmas](https://www.challengergray.com/). That represents a 54 percent increase from the 761,358 jobs cut during the same period in 2024. Technology companies led the carnage with over 153,000 announced cuts as artificial intelligence reshapes workforce planning. [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/) alone eliminated roughly 14,000 corporate roles citing AI's transformative potential, while [Salesforce](https://www.salesforce.com/) reduced customer support by 4,000 positions as AI-powered chatbots replaced human workers.

AI has been explicitly cited for 54,694 layoffs in 2025, marking a new phase where companies openly acknowledge eliminating jobs in favor of automation. Telecommunications saw the second-highest cuts with 38,035 positions eliminated, up 268 percent from 2024, driven largely by [Verizon's](https://www.verizon.com/) announcement of more than 13,000 job losses. The financial sector joined the bloodletting with Wells Fargo, Huntington National Bank, and Colonial Savings all filing notices. Food companies, particularly those in the beef industry, announced 34,165 cuts, up 26 percent from last year, while the services sector saw 69,089 cuts, a 64 percent increase.

November alone witnessed 71,321 announced layoffs, the highest for that month since 2022. Companies cited restructuring as the primary reason for 20,217 cuts in November, with store and department closures accounting for another 17,140 eliminations. The layoff announcements kept pace throughout 2025, with eight months seeing higher cuts than the corresponding month in 2024.

## Shareholder Priorities Over Worker Security

HR consultant Bryan Driscoll told [Newsweek](https://www.newsweek.com/) that the wave of cuts reflects shifting corporate priorities rather than pure economic collapse. "This isn't a sign the whole economy's falling apart," he explained. "It's a sign leadership is more focused on pleasing shareholders than supporting the workers who actually keep the place running." Aaron Sojourner, senior researcher at the [W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research](https://www.upjohn.org/), offered a bleaker assessment, stating that every sector faces layoff risk in 2026.

The layoffs come despite solid economic growth that topped 4 percent annually in 2025's third quarter, creating a disconnect between GDP performance and employment trends. Companies cited restructuring, store closures, market conditions, and tariffs as primary drivers. [President Trump's](https://www.whitehouse.gov/) trade levies raised costs for businesses, particularly hitting small firms operating on thin margins. Tariffs were cited as the driver of more than 2,000 cuts in November and nearly 8,000 year to date.

With 199,000 Americans filing unemployment claims in late December and job openings at five-year lows, workers face a challenging landscape where those with jobs cling to them while those seeking work struggle to find openings. The job openings-to-unemployed worker ratio has fallen to 0.91, meaning there are now more job seekers than available positions. [Glassdoor](https://www.glassdoor.com/) data shows employee mentions of "layoffs" and "job insecurity" in company ratings are now higher than they were in March 2020, when the pandemic first shut down the global economy. Trust in senior leadership has eroded as well, with negative descriptions of executives rising sharply since 2024.
