# Drivers and Mechanics Among 10,000 to 20,000 Jobs Kaduna Expects From Its First BRT Line

Kaduna officials estimate 10,000 to 20,000 direct and indirect jobs from a BRT line with 120 CNG buses. Which roles, when hiring could start, how to prepare.

Kaduna State expects its first Bus Rapid Transit line to bring work for drivers, mechanics and maintenance workers, and officials put the expected employment at [between 10,000 and 20,000 jobs](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/) along a 24 kilometre corridor served by 120 articulated buses running on compressed natural gas. That range is an estimate of [direct and indirect employment](https://gazettengr.com/kaduna-to-deploy-120-cng-powered-buses-on-brt-corridor-to-ease-traffic-congestion/), not a count of open vacancies. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers in Nigeria's transport trades, the useful questions are which jobs the project would actually create, who would do the hiring and when it would begin. The project's own pages, its [French lender](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project) and the older [Lagos BRT](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-services/) all help answer them.

## What Did Kaduna Announce at the Briefing?

The announcement came at a media engagement in Kaduna [on Tuesday](https://tribuneonlineng.com/kaduna-brt-will-create-20000-jobs-when-completed-acting-dg/), led by Inuwa Ibrahim, who is [managing director of Kaduna Line and acting director-general](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/) of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA). The state has [completed planning and design and is preparing to begin implementation](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/), Ibrahim said, though detailed design work is due to finish [by the end of October](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/). The BRT is still a [proposed project](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/), and its operations have [not yet started](https://tribuneonlineng.com/kaduna-brt-will-create-20000-jobs-when-completed-acting-dg/).

The corridor runs from [Kawo Bridge to Sabon Tasha](https://kaduna-brt.com/about-us/). Officials describe it as the first BRT in Kaduna State and [the second of its kind in Nigeria after Lagos](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/). The plan includes [dedicated bus lanes, modern bus stops, shelters and terminals](https://gazettengr.com/kaduna-to-deploy-120-cng-powered-buses-on-brt-corridor-to-ease-traffic-congestion/), plus [stations and a depot](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/) for a fleet of 120 articulated buses.

The [first section](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/) is shorter than the full 24 kilometre line. It is set to cover [17 kilometres, with 20 stations, a terminal at Kawo and a depot](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/), along with an Intelligent Transport System for monitoring and passenger security. The engineering consultant on the project gave that first section as about 17 kilometres, [subject to completion of the final design](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/).

## Which Jobs Would the BRT Create, and How Firm Is the Estimate?

Officials listed [drivers, mechanics and other personnel](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/) needed to operate and maintain the system, and the work would also span [engineering, terminal operations and other support services](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/). The roles named so far include:

- Bus drivers for a fleet of articulated buses, which the lender describes as [18-meter vehicles](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project).
- Mechanics and servicing technicians for gas-powered engines, since the buses will run on [CNG all through](https://tribuneonlineng.com/kaduna-brt-will-create-20000-jobs-when-completed-acting-dg/).
- Engineering roles, on a network that will include an [Intelligent Transport System](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/).
- [Terminal operations](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/) staff, with the network planned to include [stations, terminals and a depot](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/).

The headline range needs care. The estimate covers [direct and indirect employment opportunities](https://gazettengr.com/kaduna-to-deploy-120-cng-powered-buses-on-brt-corridor-to-ease-traffic-congestion/), and Ibrahim added that the buses and supporting infrastructure [would stimulate economic activities along the route](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/). Ibrahim framed it as an expectation, telling reporters the state was [expecting to have about 10 to 20,000 jobs](https://tribuneonlineng.com/kaduna-brt-will-create-20000-jobs-when-completed-acting-dg/) for the corridor. He pointed to the fleet itself, saying that [even to say you have 120 drivers, the support, the mechanics, servicing](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/) showed the economic benefit. Officials gave no split between [direct and indirect jobs](https://gazettengr.com/kaduna-to-deploy-120-cng-powered-buses-on-brt-corridor-to-ease-traffic-congestion/).

> The employment opportunities would come from the operation and maintenance of the buses and other services associated with the BRT system, Inuwa Ibrahim said at the Kaduna briefing, according to [the Leadership newspaper report](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/).

## When Could Hiring Start?

The project is targeting [take-off in the first quarter of 2027](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/), and officials set out several steps before full construction:

- Detailed design is expected to be finished [by the end of October](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/).
- About [six months of procurement](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/) is planned before full construction.
- Construction is expected to take about [18 months under favourable weather conditions](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/).
- Terminal 1 at Kawo could start earlier, with its design complete and procurement [underway](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/) or [about to begin](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/).

The project is [expected to commence in the first quarter of 2027](https://tribuneonlineng.com/kaduna-brt-will-create-20000-jobs-when-completed-acting-dg/), and officials did not say whether that means the start of works or the first passenger trip. Utilities along the corridor, including [water facilities, telecommunications infrastructure and electricity cables](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/), are due to be moved before construction, and about [40 kilometres of alternative roads](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/) are being rehabilitated to carry traffic during the works. Economic activity would span construction, bus operations, maintenance, engineering and terminal management [if the current implementation schedule is maintained](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/), in BusinessDay's assessment.

## What Does Lagos Show About Real BRT Staffing?

Lagos is the natural comparison, since Kaduna's line is billed as [the second of its kind in Nigeria after Lagos](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/). The Lagos BRT pilot, a [22 km Mile 12 to CMS scheme](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-services/), was commissioned on March 17, 2008, and the page of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) gives its fleet as 220 buses. [Over 900 bus pilots/bus officers and 57 inspectors/monitoring officers](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-services/) were employed for BRT operations.

The Lagos BRT created [direct employment for over 1,000 people and indirect employment to over 500,000 people](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-services/). The line [generated 2000 jobs for drivers, bus conductors, inspectors, ticket sellers and mechanics](https://blogs.worldbank.org/en/transport/lagos-bus-rapid-transit-system-decongesting-and-depolluting-mega-cities-0), plus 10,000 indirect jobs around park-and-ride facilities and food services, in a 2015 World Bank blog post's count. The two counts differ.

> The scheme has created direct employment for over 1,000 people, mostly graduates and indirect employment to over 500,000 people in the state, according to [LAMATA's own BRT page](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-services/).

Lagos ran [220 buses](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-services/) on its first line, against the [120 articulated buses](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project) planned for Kaduna. The Lagos line runs a [16-hour operation from 6.00 a.m to 10 p.m. every day](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-services/). For its later standard routes, LAMATA engaged [four private Bus Operating Companies](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-reform-initiative/) to run buses that the Lagos State Government procured. Those standard routes are credited on LAMATA's page with [over 1,500 direct and indirect jobs](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-reform-initiative/) with 358 buses deployed.

## Who Would Do the Hiring?

None of the [briefing reports](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/) names an operator for the drivers and mechanics. Under the Lagos [Bus Reform Initiative](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-reform-initiative/), the responsibilities of private operators shall include maintenance, bus services and recruitment of personnel, while government provides depots, terminals, shelters and roads. The original BRT line followed the same split, with a private operator, [First BRT Cooperative Limited](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-services/), taking on operations and maintenance.

That matters for how you apply. At the time of writing, LAMATA's [careers page](https://www.lamata-ng.com/careers/) lists roles such as engineer, human resource and IT personnel, plus an Others option, and asks candidates to send a CV, with no bus driver category in the list.

The project will help set up sustainable operations through [the transition of informal operators into the newly created bus industry](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project), alongside strengthening KADSTRA itself. Project coordinator Aliyu Usman, describing the state's wider move to terminal-based routes, put it as [transiting from the informal to formal](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/).

A KADSTRA delegation [visited LAMATA to study BRT best practices in procurement and operations](http://nairametrics.com/2025/03/08/kaduna-govt-set-to-begin-24-km-brt-corridor-construction-from-kawo-bridge-to-sabon-tasha/) in a trip covered in January 2025, and KADSTRA will have the opportunity of sharing experiences with [LAMATA and Ile-de-France Mobilité in Paris](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project) during the project.

## What Gas Bus Service Does Kaduna Already Run?

Kaduna already has [existing CNG buses](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/) on its roads. As of a review covering [July to November 2025](https://von.gov.ng/groups-laud-kaduna-state-governors-free-cng-bus-scheme/), the state's free mass transit scheme ran [100 CNG-powered buses across 200 designated stops](https://von.gov.ng/groups-laud-kaduna-state-governors-free-cng-bus-scheme/) and carried over 1.4 million passengers in five months. The scheme was [serving more than 18,000 residents daily](https://von.gov.ng/groups-laud-kaduna-state-governors-free-cng-bus-scheme/) when the Voice of Nigeria article appeared in January 2026. After a review, the governor approved the [indefinite continuation](https://von.gov.ng/groups-laud-kaduna-state-governors-free-cng-bus-scheme/) of the scheme.

Residents praised [the professionalism of the bus drivers and conductors](https://von.gov.ng/groups-laud-kaduna-state-governors-free-cng-bus-scheme/), including their safety habits and driving. The existing CNG buses were introduced by the state to [cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/), while the BRT is planned as a separate mass transit system with its own infrastructure.

Bus operations in the state are also being organised around terminals at [Mando, Kakuri and Millennium City](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/), and the BRT is part of [KADSTRA's wider effort to formalise and reorganise public transportation](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/) through structured routes and terminals.

## Who Is Paying for It, and What Has Changed Since the Earlier Launch?

Financing has been [arranged through the Agence Française de Développement](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/), and the [Federal Ministry of Finance signed an agreement for a EUR 110 Million facility](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project) to Kaduna State for the BRT, in an earlier AFD release. The state covers [taxes and compensation-related obligations](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/) through counterpart funding. The BRT is part of a [₦30 billion 2025 transport investment](https://kaduna-brt.com/about-us/), including ₦5 billion in counterpart funding.

The full [24km-BRT system](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project) includes 30 bus stations, a depot and 120 articulated buses, and 160,000 passengers are expected to commute daily on it. An estimated minimum of [100,000 inhabitants will have direct access to the BRT corridor](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project). Kaduna Metropolis had an estimated population of [1.3 million, expected to double by 2030 to reach 3 million](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project) in AFD's earlier release, which adds that [the travel demand will keep rising in the coming years](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project).

In March 2025, the state was [set to begin construction of the 24-kilometre corridor](http://nairametrics.com/2025/03/08/kaduna-govt-set-to-begin-24-km-brt-corridor-construction-from-kawo-bridge-to-sabon-tasha/), with a groundbreaking planned for the Southern Terminal at the Kaduna Line depot, and the project had already [faced previous delays](http://nairametrics.com/2025/03/08/kaduna-govt-set-to-begin-24-km-brt-corridor-construction-from-kawo-bridge-to-sabon-tasha/). In March 2025, Ibrahim said the project would [stimulate economic growth, create jobs](http://nairametrics.com/2025/03/08/kaduna-govt-set-to-begin-24-km-brt-corridor-construction-from-kawo-bridge-to-sabon-tasha/), and that report gave no job figure, while the latest briefing gave the 10,000 to 20,000 estimate, the [first quarter of 2027 target](https://tribuneonlineng.com/kaduna-brt-will-create-20000-jobs-when-completed-acting-dg/) and a phased plan whose first section runs [17 kilometres](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/).

## What Could Change for Existing Drivers and Transport Workers?

Engagements are ongoing with [transport unions and other stakeholders](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/) on the proposed relocation of the existing Kawo Motor.

The design aims to avoid [widespread demolition of properties](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/). About [80 percent of the corridor](https://thenationonlineng.net/kaduna-brt-120-cng-buses-to-ease-traffic-create-20000-jobs-2/) would keep the existing carriageways, with BRT infrastructure built into the road design rather than widening through demolitions. Fares would be [subsidised relative to prevailing informal transport rates](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/), Usman said, although officials did not disclose the fare structure. Project officials expect mass transit to cut congestion and emissions, [particularly if some commuters shift from private vehicles and informal transport to the BRT](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

For job seekers, the 10,000 to 20,000 figure is a projection of [direct and indirect](https://gazettengr.com/kaduna-to-deploy-120-cng-powered-buses-on-brt-corridor-to-ease-traffic-congestion/) work, not an open call. A [financing agreement with AFD](https://www.afd.fr/en/actualites/communique-de-presse/kaduna-state-implement-first-bus-rapid-transit-project) exists, detailed design is at [an advanced stage](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/) and a review of the state's [free CNG bus scheme between July and November 2025](https://von.gov.ng/groups-laud-kaduna-state-governors-free-cng-bus-scheme/) led to its indefinite continuation. But construction alone is expected to take about [18 months under favourable weather conditions](https://businessday.ng/news/article/kaduna-brt-targets-q1-2027-take-off-20000-jobs-lower-fares/) after about six months of procurement, and none of the briefing accounts gives a recruitment date.

Here are practical steps while the project moves through design and procurement:

- **Build CNG experience now.** The BRT will run on [CNG all through](https://tribuneonlineng.com/kaduna-brt-will-create-20000-jobs-when-completed-acting-dg/), and the state's free transit scheme [ran 100 CNG-powered buses](https://von.gov.ng/groups-laud-kaduna-state-governors-free-cng-bus-scheme/) during a review from July to November 2025.
- **Get your licence and records in order.** Keep your driving licence current and document your heavy vehicle experience in a [bus driver resume](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/bus-driver-resume-examples) that lists the vehicle types you have driven and your safety record.
- **Watch for the operator as well as KADSTRA.** None of the briefing reports names an operator, and in Lagos private operators handle [recruitment of personnel](https://www.lamata-ng.com/bus-reform-initiative/).
- **Look at construction first.** Rehabilitation of alternative roads is [already in progress](https://leadership.ng/kaduna-targets-20000-jobs-from-proposed-brt/), and utility relocation is due before construction.
