The owners of [the LNG Canada plant](https://www.lngcanada.ca/) have approved the second phase of their export plant in Kitimat, British Columbia, and at peak construction the expansion is expected to host [up to 4,000 new construction jobs in Kitimat](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html). LNG Canada announced the decision in a [release dated Sept. 28](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html), and it was presented at a press conference in Vancouver on [Tuesday morning (Sept. 29)](https://pentictonwesternnews.com/2026/09/29/lng-phase-2-in-kitimat-gets-go-ahead-in-final-investment-decision/) with Prime Minister Mark Carney and B.C. Premier David Eby. The operations additions are far smaller, with approximately [90 full-time roles and 150 contractor positions](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html) to be added when the expansion is complete. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers in the trades, the useful questions are who is hiring, for which skills, when the work ramps up and which pages to watch, and the company and contractor pages below cover each one.

## How Many Jobs Will Phase 2 Create?

At peak construction, Phase 2 is expected to host [up to 4,000 new construction jobs in Kitimat](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html). Phase 2 will create [more than 4,000 direct jobs in the construction phase alone](https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2026/09/29/prime-minister-carney-welcomes-lng-canada-phase-2-second-largest) in the federal government's count.

A third figure covers the whole program, as the federal project page lists [around 6,000 direct construction jobs, and up to 240 operations jobs](https://www.canada.ca/en/privy-council/major-projects-office/projects/national/lng-canada.html) across the LNG plant and the Coastal GasLink pipeline together.

Phase 2 is a [$33-billion private sector investment](https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2026/09/29/prime-minister-carney-welcomes-lng-canada-phase-2-second-largest), and it will double the plant's capacity [from 14 to 28 million tonnes a year](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html).

[Canada's government referred LNG Canada Phase 2 to the Major Projects Office](https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2026/09/29/prime-minister-carney-welcomes-lng-canada-phase-2-second-largest) in September 2025, and the office has since given the project dedicated support toward an investment decision and the start of construction.

## How Many of These Jobs Will Last After Construction?

When Phase 2 is complete, LNG Canada will add [approximately 90 full-time roles and 150 contractor positions](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html) to its operational workforce in Kitimat, which currently totals over 400 permanent full-time jobs, far fewer than the construction peak.

During the first phase, at peak, there were [more than 9,400 highly skilled Canadians](https://www.lngcanada.ca/what-we-do/construction/) at the LNG Canada site in Kitimat, and [more than 50,000 Canadians](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html) contributed to delivering the first phase. The first phase reached its own final investment decision in [2018](https://www.lngcanada.ca/what-we-do/construction/), and the project [loaded a first cargo for export in June 2025](https://www.lngcanada.ca/what-we-do/construction/). Phase 2 will be built within LNG Canada's [existing Kitimat footprint](https://todayinbc.com/2026/09/29/lng-canada-outlines-jobs-construction-plans-for-phase-2-in-kitimat/), which was designed from the outset to hold four processing trains.

## Who Is Doing the Hiring on the Kitimat Site?

[The Fluor Corporation](https://newsroom.fluor.com/news-releases/news-details/2026/Fluor-Joint-Venture-Selected-for-LNG-Canada-Phase-2-Expansion-Following-Final-Investment-Decision/default.aspx) and JGC Corporation have been selected to deliver engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction and commissioning for Phase 2, and their joint venture received its Notice to Proceed after the investment decision. Fluor will recognize its [US$7.5 billion share](https://newsroom.fluor.com/news-releases/news-details/2026/Fluor-Joint-Venture-Selected-for-LNG-Canada-Phase-2-Expansion-Following-Final-Investment-Decision/default.aspx) of the contract in the third quarter of fiscal 2026.

The entity doing the site work is a Canadian joint venture called [JGC Fluor BC LNG II JV](https://newsroom.fluor.com/news-releases/news-details/2026/Fluor-Joint-Venture-Selected-for-LNG-Canada-Phase-2-Expansion-Following-Final-Investment-Decision/default.aspx), owned equally by Fluor Canada and JGC Constructors (No2) BC. The same partners built Phase 1, and the Phase 1 facility [began producing LNG in June 2025](https://newsroom.fluor.com/news-releases/news-details/2026/Fluor-Joint-Venture-Selected-for-LNG-Canada-Phase-2-Expansion-Following-Final-Investment-Decision/default.aspx). Handover of the Phase 1 facility was [completed in October 2025](https://newsroom.fluor.com/news-releases/news-details/2026/Fluor-Joint-Venture-Selected-for-LNG-Canada-Phase-2-Expansion-Following-Final-Investment-Decision/default.aspx).

That matters for your search. Job seekers are asked to check [the contractor's Kitimat careers page](https://jfjvkitimat.com/careers/) regularly, and it also carries links to subcontractor openings as they become available. At the time of writing, there is [no spot hiring on the Kitimat project](https://jfjvkitimat.com/careers/), and workers are asked to have a position secured before travelling to Kitimat.

LNG Canada is [committed to hiring locally first, then within B.C. and Canada](https://www.lngcanada.ca/what-we-do/jgc-fluor-joint-venture-jfjv/) in construction and operations, a commitment shared by the JGC Fluor joint venture that built Phase 1.

> The project will employ both union and non-union tradespeople, and will need just about every kind of skill imaginable, according to [the JGC Fluor careers page](https://jfjvkitimat.com/careers/).

## Which Trades Will the Project Need?

The project will need [labourers, carpenters, cement masons, heavy equipment operators](https://jfjvkitimat.com/careers/), ironworkers, truck drivers, boilermakers, sheet metal workers, plumbers and pipefitters, crane operators, electricians, insulators, welders, painters and warehouse workers.

The expansion adds [two LNG processing units, known as trains](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html), plus an additional LNG storage tank, a condensate tank, a loading berth and expanded utility and process systems.

Electricians are on [the contractor's list](https://jfjvkitimat.com/careers/), and if you are weighing whether your own ticket fits a plant like this, start with [what a journeyman electrician is](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/what-is-a-journeyman-electrician).

## When Does the Construction Work Start?

Some of it has already started, as LNG Canada CEO Chris Cooper said "[Phase 2 proper construction](https://pentictonwesternnews.com/2026/09/29/lng-phase-2-in-kitimat-gets-go-ahead-in-final-investment-decision/)" is already underway, with work on the jetty and marine facilities. [Work on water-management ponds](https://pentictonwesternnews.com/2026/09/29/lng-phase-2-in-kitimat-gets-go-ahead-in-final-investment-decision/) will begin in October, followed by heavy piling in January to lay the foundation.

At the time of writing, LNG Canada had [not released a completion date for Phase 2](https://todayinbc.com/2026/09/29/lng-canada-outlines-jobs-construction-plans-for-phase-2-in-kitimat/).

The pipeline side has a published start, with construction on the Coastal GasLink expansion [expected to commence in early 2027](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/) and anticipated in-service in the early 2030s.

## What About the Coastal GasLink Pipeline Jobs?

The expansion also requires [more capacity on the Coastal GasLink pipeline](https://todayinbc.com/2026/09/29/lng-canada-outlines-jobs-construction-plans-for-phase-2-in-kitimat/) that supplies the Kitimat facility. An estimated [up to 2,100 people will be employed on Coastal GasLink Phase 2](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/) during peak construction across five sites. The work adds new compressor stations and upgrades facilities along the existing [670-kilometre route](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/) from Dawson Creek to Kitimat, without building any additional pipeline. The pipeline already transports [approximately 2.1 Bcf/d of natural gas](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/), and the Phase 2 infrastructure will be operated by TC Energy, a co-owner of Coastal GasLink.

The way this work is managed is worth understanding. Under commercial agreements made earlier this year, [LNG Canada will lead project construction as Phase 2 Execution Manager](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/), while Coastal GasLink remains the owner, operator and permit holder. Pipeline construction is [expected to deliver direct benefit](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/) through jobs, contracting, and training and skills development opportunities to Indigenous and local communities.

Construction of the original pipeline created [approximately 25,700 full-time-equivalent jobs](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/) in British Columbia over its multi-year build. The pipeline was built with the support of [20 elected Indigenous communities](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/) along the route, with long-term agreements that remain in place. Coastal GasLink has also awarded [more than $1.8 billion in contracts](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/) to Indigenous and local businesses and invested more than $13 million in local communities, non-profits and sponsorships.

## How Can You Apply for a Permanent Job at LNG Canada?

LNG Canada lists its own openings through a job board linked from its [careers page](https://www.lngcanada.ca/opportunities/careers/). Joining LNG Canada comes with [comprehensive relocation support](https://www.lngcanada.ca/opportunities/careers/) for the move to Kitimat.

> We hire for character and train for skill, according to [the LNG Canada careers page](https://www.lngcanada.ca/opportunities/careers/).

LNG Canada aspires to attract a diverse workforce [from northwestern B.C., from other parts of the province and from across Canada](https://www.lngcanada.ca/opportunities/careers/) who will call Kitimat home.

Protect yourself while you search. Fake job offers made in LNG Canada's name [ask applicants to pay for work permits or insurance](https://www.lngcanada.ca/fraud-and-scam-alert/), and neither the company nor anyone recruiting on its behalf ever asks applicants for money. LNG Canada says all communications should come [from a verifiable LNG Canada email address](https://www.lngcanada.ca/fraud-and-scam-alert/), not a free webmail account.

## What Help Is There for Apprentices and New Trades Workers?

LNG Canada has provided [more than $10 million in funding](https://www.lngcanada.ca/commitments/workforce-development/) for several workforce development initiatives to help British Columbia meet industry's skilled trades requirements.

- **Trades Training Fund.** LNG Canada has contributed [over $2 million](https://www.lngcanada.ca/commitments/workforce-development/) to the fund, and more than 1,500 apprentice applications have been approved to date. The B.C. Construction Association [administers the fund](https://www.lngcanada.ca/commitments/workforce-development/), which is open to small and medium-size employers for apprentice training programs. Apprentices in the middle of their apprenticeships can [speak to their employer](https://www.lngcanada.ca/commitments/workforce-development/) about applying.
- **LNG Canada Connect.** LNG Canada funded a [dedicated resource in Terrace](https://www.lngcanada.ca/commitments/workforce-development/), in partnership with the B.C. Construction Association's [Skilled Trades Employment Program](https://stepbc.ca/), to fill construction positions in the Kitimat and Terrace region. The representative can offer money from the [Gear Up Fund](https://www.lngcanada.ca/commitments/workforce-development/) for costs such as prerequisite training or personal protective equipment.
- **Power engineering.** A locally run readiness program leads into a 4th Class Power Engineer program, and graduates of the [full 38-week program](https://www.lngcanada.ca/commitments/workforce-development/) are prepared to sit the government exams for an Interprovincial 4th Class Power Engineer certificate. LNG Canada developed the programs [with Coast Mountain College and BCIT](https://www.lngcanada.ca/commitments/workforce-development/).

The trades employment program itself has been connecting job seekers with construction employers [since 2006](https://stepbc.ca/). It focuses on [job seekers from under-represented groups](https://stepbc.ca/) and offers funding for tools, short-term safety training, PPE and work gear. Its [one-on-one support](https://stepbc.ca/) covers job search coaching, resume assistance, interview preparation and direct connections to hiring employers. The program can be reached at [1-833-567-STEP](https://stepbc.ca/).

## What Does Phase 2 Mean for First Nations and Local Businesses?

The plant sits on the [traditional territory of the Haisla Nation](https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2026/09/29/prime-minister-carney-welcomes-lng-canada-phase-2-second-largest). Five First Nations, the Gitga'at, Gitxaała, Haisla, Kitselas and Kitsumkalum, have an option through MNT Investments LP to invest [up to $1 billion](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html) in a special purpose entity that will buy the new LNG storage tank.

Across the whole project to date, contracts and subcontracts include [more than $4.9 billion](https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2026/09/29/prime-minister-carney-welcomes-lng-canada-phase-2-second-largest) to Indigenous-owned and local area businesses. The Haisla Nation, with a population of over 2,000, is [expected to see direct benefits through employment opportunities](https://www.canada.ca/en/privy-council/major-projects-office/projects/national/lng-canada.html) for its members.

Firms that want to bid on the scopes LNG Canada awards directly can register through its [supplier registration process](https://www.lngcanada.ca/opportunities/contracting-procurement/). LNG Canada adds registered suppliers to its [contracting and procurement register](https://www.lngcanada.ca/opportunities/contracting-procurement/) and contacts them as suitable opportunities are identified, and one of its selection criteria is the ability to generate local employment. Where possible, LNG Canada awards contracts through [competitive Requests for Proposals](https://www.lngcanada.ca/opportunities/contracting-procurement/), and its criteria also cover safety performance, financial stability and the ability to meet schedule.

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

Most Phase 2 work is construction, with [up to 4,000 construction jobs](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html) at peak against approximately 90 full-time roles and 150 contractor positions once Phase 2 is complete. Plan around a construction job, and apply to LNG Canada directly if you want an operations role.

If you are a certified tradesperson, the contractor's [careers page](https://jfjvkitimat.com/careers/) is where JGC Fluor expects a wide range of opportunities to appear as the project grows. If you are an apprentice or new to the trades, the Terrace-based [LNG Canada Connect representative](https://www.lngcanada.ca/commitments/workforce-development/) can offer Gear Up Fund support for costs such as prerequisite training or PPE, and anyone comparing routes into other energy builds can read about the [nuclear construction hiring wave and its apprenticeships](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/nuclear-construction-hiring-wave-apprenticeships-2026).

Next steps:

- **Watch the contractor page.** Check the [Kitimat project careers page](https://jfjvkitimat.com/careers/) regularly, including its subcontractor links, and do not travel north without a confirmed position.
- **Match your trade to the schedule.** Jetty and marine work is [already underway](https://pentictonwesternnews.com/2026/09/29/lng-phase-2-in-kitimat-gets-go-ahead-in-final-investment-decision/), with water-management ponds next in October and heavy piling in January.
- **Apply to the operator for lasting work.** LNG Canada's own openings are on the job board linked from its [careers page](https://www.lngcanada.ca/opportunities/careers/), and [the planned operations additions are small](https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/lng-canada-announces-phase-2-final-investment-decision-828313121.html), so tailor each application.
- **Look along the pipeline too.** Compressor station work is planned across [five sites](https://www.tcenergy.com/announcements/2026/2026-09-29-coastal-gaslink-phase-2-to-proceed-following-lng-canada-final-investment-decision/) on the existing route from Dawson Creek to Kitimat.
- **Never pay to apply.** Walk away from any offer that asks for fees, as the [company scam alert](https://www.lngcanada.ca/fraud-and-scam-alert/) advises.
