# Micron's Taoyuan Union Plans an October 22 Strike After 99% of Ballots Backed a Walkout Over AI Profit Sharing

Micron's Taoyuan union plans a one-day strike October 22 after 99% of ballots backed a walkout over profit sharing. What workers want and what the law says.

[The union at Micron's Taoyuan operations plans a one-day strike on October 22](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates), and its members are asking for something more lasting than a bonus cheque. They want [a concrete offer on this year's one-off bonus and a transparent, predictable profit-sharing system for the future](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates). The strike follows a ballot in which [1,994 members voted to authorize a strike, 99% of the ballots cast, with just 14 against](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/). One day before the walkout, the picture shifted. [Micron and its Taichung union signed a labour agreement on October 21 and agreed to withdraw the mediation set for the next day](https://udn.com/news/story/7240/9828635) (translated), while [talks with the Taoyuan union are still continuing](https://www.taisounds.com/news/content/76/295330) (translated). For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers who work in chip plants or hope to, this story is about how semiconductor workers are pricing their share of an AI boom, and which legal rules sit behind a strike vote in Taiwan.

## Who Is Striking, and What Changed on the Eve of October 22?

The strike is called by [the Taiwan Micron wafer technology company union in Taoyuan](https://newtalk.tw/news/view/2026-10-20/1066673), which set out on October 20 its plan to [strike for one day on Thursday the 22nd to press Micron for a concrete answer on profit sharing](https://newtalk.tw/news/view/2026-10-20/1066673) (translated). The Taoyuan site has [close to 3,000 employees](https://www.businesstoday.com.tw/article/category/183027/post/202610210034/) (translated), and its fab [mainly makes DRAM](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/).

October 22 was set as [the day of the Taichung union's second mediation session with Micron, and the Taoyuan union called a solidarity strike for the same day](https://www.businesstoday.com.tw/article/category/183027/post/202610210034/) (translated). The Taichung site is larger, with [about 12,300 employees, of whom as many as 11,000 are union members](https://www.businesstoday.com.tw/article/category/183027/post/202610210034/) (translated).

[The Taichung union and Micron reached consensus on several issues, formally signed a labour agreement on October 21 and agreed to withdraw the mediation planned for October 22](https://news.nextapple.com/finance/20261021/7D4DBB1AD2F52DA07D1EB2C931336A68) (translated). The two sides [will explain the agreement to the employees concerned in the coming days](https://udn.com/news/story/7240/9828635) (translated), and the announcement [did not disclose the specific issues, conditions or scope of the agreement](https://www.taisounds.com/news/content/76/295330) (translated).

Micron said it [will keep communicating with the Taoyuan union in good faith and with an open attitude to find a solution all sides can accept](https://www.taisounds.com/news/content/76/295330) (translated). [The Taichung agreement does not mean Micron's labour talks in Taiwan have fully ended](https://www.taisounds.com/news/content/76/295330) (translated). On October 20, the union set out [a one-day stoppage](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates).

## What Exactly Are Taoyuan Workers Asking Micron For?

The demand has two layers. In the short term, the union wants [Micron to state the ratio and amount of this year's one-off bonus](https://newtalk.tw/news/view/2026-10-20/1066673) (translated). In the long term, it wants a formula. Before the Taichung deal, the unions were seeking [a one-off bonus of 83 months' salary as well as a permanent system that allocates 15 percent of the company's operating profits to worker bonuses, distributed quarterly rather than annually](https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2026/10/21/2003866321).

The method itself is negotiable. The union is [open to talks on how profit sharing is calculated or shared, and it is seeking a more open, reasonable and democratic system for distributing profits](https://money.udn.com/money/story/5612/9827821) (translated). If members find a company offer acceptable, the union [is very willing to sign an agreement and end the dispute there](https://money.udn.com/money/story/5612/9827821) (translated).

The demand for a formula is not new. It dates back at least to September, when [chip workers pressed for a permanent cut of Micron's profits](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/micron-taiwan-workers-15-percent-profit-share). What is new is the timing. The union says the company told it during talks that [it had to wait for a decision by the US head office board, yet the board finished meeting on October 9 and ten days later there was still no positive response](https://newtalk.tw/news/view/2026-10-20/1066673) (translated).

> Through our actions, we will make our dissatisfaction with the current system heard and demonstrate our determination to establish a fair profit-sharing system, the Taoyuan union said in a statement on Monday, according to [Reuters, carried by the Taipei Times](https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2026/10/21/2003866321).

## Why Is It Called a Warning Strike, and How Long Will It Last?

The union has drawn the action narrowly on purpose. The [current plan is still set at a one-day warning strike, and the union decided to give up a surprise strike and announce it in advance](https://money.udn.com/money/story/5612/9827821) (translated). The aim, in its words, is to remind Micron [to offer a profit-sharing plan that union members across Taiwan can accept before greater economic and social losses are caused](https://money.udn.com/money/story/5612/9827821) (translated).

Before the date was set, [the union's chair had floated a surprise walkout, called by text on short notice](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/). The union now stresses that [the planned stoppage was a warning strike rather than a break in talks](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates).

## How Big Are Micron's AI Profits, and Why Do Workers Want a Share?

The profit side of the argument is printed in Micron's own results. Micron posted [record fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results, and its release credits AI-driven demand and strong execution for positioning it for a record fiscal 2027](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000723125/000072312526000018/a2026q4ex991-pressrelease.htm). Fiscal 2026 revenue was [$133.19 billion versus $37.38 billion for the prior year](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000723125/000072312526000018/a2026q4ex991-pressrelease.htm), and fourth-quarter revenue was [$54.23 billion](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000723125/000072312526000018/a2026q4ex991-pressrelease.htm).

Micron's [fiscal 2026 operating income of $99.3 billion was up from $9.8 billion in fiscal 2025](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/), and by the Motley Fool's math, the union's 15% formula [would have meant around $14.9 billion for employees](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/).

Workers tie the demand to AI. Micron is [the latest chipmaker to face labour unrest as employees seek a larger share of AI gains that have propelled leading memory producers to record profits and margins](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/10/07/micron039s-taoyuan-union-in-taiwan-secures-authorisation-to-strike). In Taiwan, Micron makes [DRAM and high-bandwidth memory chips used in AI servers](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates). The union has put the stakes in its own terms, saying that if even Micron, [the largest foreign investor whose staff are joining the union under the AI dividend wave, cannot win a reasonable profit-sharing system, Taiwan's workers will find it hard to believe that AI gains are shared by all](https://newtalk.tw/news/view/2026-10-20/1066673) (translated).

Workers also point to their own history. The union recalled that in 2023, [Micron's head office, facing a global loss, required 10% layoffs that Taiwan had to carry out even though it was profitable](https://newtalk.tw/news/view/2026-10-20/1066673) (translated). For 2025, the union points out that [the bonus plan paid a 93.9% performance coefficient, worth about 2.3 months' pay and later raised to 2.6 months, while the chief executive's annual cash performance award reached 32.4 months](https://newtalk.tw/news/view/2026-10-20/1066673) (translated).

## What Did Micron Already Offer, and Why Was It Not Enough?

Micron has not been silent on pay. Micron's September pay plan meant that [direct labour employees in Taiwan would receive bonuses equaling 35 to 68 months of pay for fiscal 2026, with minimum cash compensation of T$1.7 million](https://www.nst.com.my/amp/business/corporate/2026/09/1530441/microns-taiwan-workers-get-rewards-worth-68-months-pay). [Entry-level engineers' total rewards average T$3.4 million](https://www.nst.com.my/amp/business/corporate/2026/09/1530441/microns-taiwan-workers-get-rewards-worth-68-months-pay), in the company's own figures. Micron also [raised fiscal 2026 incentive pay for all employees worldwide](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/), a step set out in the chief executive's prepared remarks for the September 30 earnings call.

In the union's view, the package [failed to address its demand for a permanent profit-sharing mechanism](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/10/07/micron039s-taoyuan-union-in-taiwan-secures-authorisation-to-strike). On newer perks such as [a 48th anniversary meal subsidy and a choose-one gift offer](https://www.businesstoday.com.tw/article/category/183027/post/202610210034/) (translated), the union does not oppose more benefits but insists that [they cannot replace a profit-sharing system](https://www.businesstoday.com.tw/article/category/183027/post/202610210034/) (translated).

## How Do Samsung and SK Hynix Share Profits With Chip Workers?

The union wants Micron to follow its Korean rivals. It has called on Micron to look at [Samsung, which shares 10.5% of profit, and SK hynix, which shares 10%, as well as local peers Winbond and TSMC](https://newtalk.tw/news/view/2026-10-20/1066673) (translated).

Those Korean deals have specific terms. In May, [Samsung Electronics agreed to set aside 10.5% of its chip division's operating profit for special bonuses, subject to profitability targets](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates). [SK Hynix agreed last year to allocate 10% of annual operating profit to its profit-sharing bonus program, removing a cap on payouts](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates). The deal [averted a strike by Samsung's South Korean union](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates), a strike that [threatened to freeze global chip supply](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/samsung-strike-global-chip-supply-tech-workers-2026).

For anyone comparing offers across chipmakers, the Taoyuan union's point is that a payout should come from a system that is [open, transparent and predictable](https://newtalk.tw/news/view/2026-10-20/1066673) (translated).

## What Does Taiwan's Labour Law Say About a Strike Like This?

Taiwan's rules set a clear order of steps. Under the [Act for Settlement of Labor-Management Disputes](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020007), [industrial dispute actions cannot be undertaken unless a mediation of labor-management dispute is not successfully concluded, and for a rights dispute a strike is not allowed](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020007). In Taoyuan, [mediation ended without an agreement in September](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates).

The vote has its own threshold. A union [shall not call a strike and set up a picketing line unless the strike has been approved by no less than one half of the members in total via direct and secret balloting](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020007). That is a test against all members, not only those who vote. Counts of Taoyuan's union membership run from [2,258 registered members](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/) to [about 2,400](https://www.businesstoday.com.tw/article/category/183027/post/202610210034/) (translated), and [1,994 voted in favour](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/10/07/micron039s-taoyuan-union-in-taiwan-secures-authorisation-to-strike). On October 7, the union [announced it had formally obtained a legal right to strike and to set up picket lines](https://ec.ltn.com.tw/article/breakingnews/5612107) (translated).

The law also protects the workers who take part. [An employer shall not claim damages from industrial dispute actions undertaken by the labor union and its members in accordance with the Act](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020007). Both sides also have a duty, [during the period of industrial dispute actions, to maintain the normal operation of safety and sanitary equipments in the workplace](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020007). The [Labor Union Act](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020001) bars an employer from acting to [dismiss, demote, reduce the wage of, or render other unfair treatment to an employee who participates in or supports industrial dispute action](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020001), and any such dismissal, demotion or wage cut [shall be null and void](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020001).

## What Are Taiwan's Government and President Saying?

The government has offered to help both sides talk. Labour Minister Hung Sun-han said [the Ministry of Labor is tracking recent disputes including Micron's and is willing to work with the Taoyuan City Government and the Central Taiwan Science Park Bureau to help narrow the gap](https://www.businesstoday.com.tw/article/category/183027/post/202610210034/) (translated). Taiwan's labor ministry had earlier urged Micron to offer [concrete, feasible proposals](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/). The Taichung agreement statement [thanked the Ministry of Labor and the Central Taiwan Science Park Bureau for their help](https://udn.com/news/story/7240/9828635) (translated).

President Lai Ching-te has also weighed in. On October 15, he [called on both sides to negotiate sincerely at the opening of Micron's new Taichung plant, which packages and tests high-bandwidth memory for AI systems](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/). Taiwan matters to Micron because it is [a crucial manufacturing base, particularly as demand rises for memory chips used in AI infrastructure](https://www.firstpost.com/business/why-microns-taiwan-union-is-planning-a-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates-14054036.html), and Micron [makes 50 to 60 percent of its chips in Taiwan](https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2026/10/21/2003866321).

> We have already sold out all the capacity for 2027 that this factory will build, Micron President and Chief Operating Officer Manish Bhatia said at the Taichung opening, according to [the Motley Fool analysis](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/).

## Could a One-Day Strike Disrupt Memory Chip Supply?

The immediate effect is hard to judge. [The immediate impact on production was unclear, but prolonged disruption could tighten already strained supplies of memory chips used in AI infrastructure](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates). Much of Micron's output is already spoken for, with [over 75% of Micron's fiscal 2027 shipments already committed](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/) as of the September 30 earnings call.

Micron has flagged this risk itself. Its latest annual filing warns that labour disruptions [could also impair our ability to meet delivery schedules under strategic customer agreements, which could result in contractual liability, loss of customer confidence, or diversion of customer demand to competing suppliers](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/), as quoted by the Motley Fool. The same filing [names new profit-sharing or bonus programs among the ways a labor dispute might get settled](https://www.fool.com/investing/2026/10/19/a-micron-union-in-taiwan-voted-99-to-authorize-a-strike-should-you-sell-the-stock/).

## What This Means for Chip Workers, and What Should You Do Next?

The Taoyuan vote puts a profit-sharing formula, not just a bigger bonus, on the table for memory chip workers in Taiwan. [Samsung and SK Hynix already tie special or profit-sharing bonuses to a share of operating profit](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates), and the union is pressing Micron to do the same. If you work in a fab, or are weighing an offer from one, the useful question is not only how large this year's bonus is but how it is calculated and whether that method is written down.

Three practical steps follow from the facts here. First, ask any chipmaker you interview with how its bonus or incentive plan is set, and whether it links to operating profit, to a performance coefficient, or to management discretion. Second, if you are in Taiwan, know that [a strike generally must follow a failed mediation, is not allowed in a rights dispute, and needs approval by no less than one half of the members in total](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020007), and that the [Labor Union Act protects employees who participate in or support industrial dispute action from dismissal, demotion, wage cuts or other unfair treatment](https://law.moj.gov.tw/ENG/LawClass/LawAll.aspx?pcode=N0020001). Third, watch what the Taichung agreement contains when [it is explained to the employees concerned](https://www.taisounds.com/news/content/76/295330) (translated).

[Leading memory producers have record profits and margins on the back of AI](https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2026/10/07/micron039s-taoyuan-union-in-taiwan-secures-authorisation-to-strike), and the unions had asked for [a permanent system that allocates 15 percent of operating profits to worker bonuses](https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2026/10/21/2003866321), with the Taoyuan union choosing [a one-day warning strike rather than a break in talks](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/tech/semiconductors/micron-union-in-taiwan-to-launch-one-day-strike-as-bonus-dispute-escalates).
