After **29 days** on picket lines through one of the coldest stretches of a New York winter, roughly **10,500** nurses at two of the city's biggest hospital systems have something to show for it. The [New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA)](https://www.nysna.org/press/victory-nurses-montefiore-mount-sinai-hospital-and-mount-sinai-morningside-and-west-reach) announced on **February 9, 2026**, that nurses at [Montefiore Health System](https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/health/2026/02/09/nyc-nurses-strike-enters-5th-week) and several [Mount Sinai](https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/nyc-nurses-strike-ending-union-montefiore-mount-sinai-hospital-deal/) hospitals reached tentative contract agreements that include salary bumps of more than **12%**, enforceable safe-staffing ratios, first-ever AI protections, and new measures against workplace violence.

The deals cover the majority of the **nearly 15,000** nurses who [walked out on January 12](https://www.nysna.org/press/hospitals-force-nearly-15000-nysna-nurses-out-largest-nurse-strike-new-york-city-history) in what became the **largest nurse strike in New York City history**. If members ratify the agreements during votes running **February 9 through 11**, those nurses head back to work on **Saturday, February 14**. But the fight is not over everywhere: about [**4,200 nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian**](https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/historic-nyc-nurse-strike-end/6447472/) remain on the line, still pushing for a deal on safe staffing.

## What Did the Nurses Actually Win?

The **three-year** tentative agreements pack several wins that go well beyond a standard raise. Here is the breakdown, according to [NYSNA](https://www.nysna.org/press/victory-nurses-montefiore-mount-sinai-hospital-and-mount-sinai-morningside-and-west-reach) and reporting from [CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/nyc-nurses-strike-ending-union-montefiore-mount-sinai-hospital-deal/), [Gothamist](https://gothamist.com/news/striking-nyc-nurses-reach-tentative-contract-agreements-at-mt-sinai-and-montefiore), and [THE CITY](https://www.thecity.nyc/2026/02/09/mount-sinai-montefiore-nysna-tentative-agreement/):

- **Salary increases of more than 12%** over three years. At [Mount Sinai Morningside & West](https://www.fox5ny.com/news/nyc-nurses-tentative-agreements-strike-details), that breaks down to **4%** next month, **4%** in **March 2027**, and another **4%** staggered across **January and June 2028**. At **Mount Sinai Hospital**, the schedule is **3%**, **4%**, and **3.2%**.
- **Enforceable safe-staffing ratios** preserved from the [2023 contract](https://www.nysna.org/press/2023/breaking-nyc-nurse-strike-ends-nysna-declares-historic-victories-montefiore-and-mount). Montefiore also committed to lower nurse-to-patient ratios in several new areas, including — for the first time — an outpatient unit.
- **First-ever AI protections**. The [Montefiore agreement](https://gothamist.com/news/striking-nyc-nurses-reach-tentative-contract-agreements-at-mt-sinai-and-montefiore) specifies that nurses can use their clinical judgment to override patient-care decisions made by AI or machine-learning systems.
- **Workplace violence safeguards**, including **metal detectors**, **panic buttons**, and dedicated response teams — demanded after an [active-shooter incident at Mount Sinai Hospital](https://www.thecity.nyc/2025/12/04/mount-sinai-shooting-nurses-nysna/) in late **2025**.
- **Health and pension benefits protected** with **no additional out-of-pocket costs** for frontline nurses.
- New protections for [**immigrant and transgender nurses and patients**](https://www.nysna.org/press/victory-nurses-montefiore-mount-sinai-hospital-and-mount-sinai-morningside-and-west-reach).

NYSNA President [**Nancy Hagans**](https://www.nysna.org/press/victory-nurses-montefiore-mount-sinai-hospital-and-mount-sinai-morningside-and-west-reach) put it plainly: "Nurses at Montefiore and Mount Sinai systems are heading back to the bedside with our heads held high after winning fair tentative contracts that maintain enforceable safe staffing ratios, improve protections from workplace violence, and maintain health benefits with no additional out-of-pocket costs for frontline nurses."

The **12%** raise is lower than the **18%** nurses won in the [previous 2023 contracts](https://www.nysna.org/blog/2023/01/24/nyc-nurses-strike-and-win-fair-contracts), but it represents a realistic compromise after weeks of grinding negotiations. More importantly, the non-wage gains — AI protections, violence safeguards, and staffing enforcement — set a new benchmark that other unions will almost certainly try to replicate.

## Why Did 15,000 Nurses Walk Out in the First Place?

Contracts between NYSNA and the three hospital systems — Montefiore, Mount Sinai, and NewYork-Presbyterian — [**expired on December 31, 2025**](https://www.nysna.org/press/nysna-nurses-deliver-10-day-strike-notice-twelve-private-sector-hospitals-new-york-city). On **January 2, 2026**, the union delivered **10-day** strike notices to [**12 private-sector hospitals**](https://www.nysna.org/press/nysna-nurses-deliver-10-day-strike-notice-twelve-private-sector-hospitals-new-york-city). When no agreement materialized, nurses at **8 hospitals** across those three systems walked out at [**6 a.m. on January 12**](https://abcnews.go.com/US/largest-nursing-strike-new-york-city-history-looming/story?id=129100789).

The central demands were not exotic:

- **Safe staffing.** Hospitals were trying to [roll back](https://www.nysna.org/press/nyc-hospital-proposals-fall-short-protecting-nurse-and-patient-safety-fourth-week-historic) enforceable nurse-to-patient ratios that nurses won during a [2023 strike](https://www.nysna.org/press/2023/breaking-nyc-nurse-strike-ends-nysna-declares-historic-victories-montefiore-and-mount) at Mount Sinai and Montefiore.
- **Health benefits.** Management proposed cutting healthcare coverage for the very nurses caring for patients — a point the union called tone-deaf.
- **Workplace violence protections.** An [active-shooter incident at Mount Sinai](https://www.thecity.nyc/2025/12/04/mount-sinai-shooting-nurses-nysna/) in **December 2025** rattled staff. Three nurses who spoke publicly about safety were [disciplined by hospital management](https://www.thecity.nyc/2025/12/04/mount-sinai-shooting-nurses-nysna/), a move NYSNA called illegal retaliation.

Hagans said it bluntly on Day 1: "Greedy hospital executives have decided to put profits above safe patient care and force nurses out on strike when we would rather be at the bedsides of our patients." The hospitals, meanwhile, [**had a combined $1.6 billion in cash reserves**](https://insights.wchsb.com/2026/01/14/the-economics-of-healthcare-labor-disruption-analyzing-nycs-historic-15000-nurse-strike-and-its-implications-for-hospital-operations/) as of **September 2025** and spent an estimated [**$100 million+**](https://insights.wchsb.com/2026/01/14/the-economics-of-healthcare-labor-disruption-analyzing-nycs-historic-15000-nurse-strike-and-its-implications-for-hospital-operations/) on temporary replacement nurses — some commanding up to **$10,000 per week**.

A prior strike at these same hospitals in [**January 2023**](https://www.nysna.org/blog/2023/01/24/nyc-nurses-strike-and-win-fair-contracts) involved roughly **7,000** nurses at two facilities. This time, the action was more than twice the size, spanning **three entire health systems** and lasting weeks instead of days. [**97%**](https://www.nysna.org/press/97-nurses-twelve-nyc-hospitals-vote-authorize-strike-protect-patient-care) of nurses across all twelve hospitals had voted to authorize the strike before it began — a staggering show of unity.

## What Happened During the 29-Day Strike?

The strike triggered a genuine public-health emergency. [**Governor Kathy Hochul**](https://www.governor.ny.gov/executive-order/no-562-extending-declaration-disaster-emergency-counties-bronx-new-york-and) signed [**Executive Order 56**](https://nurse.org/news/nyc-nurse-strike-executive-order-56-emergency/) on **January 9** — three days before nurses even walked out — declaring a disaster emergency in **Bronx, Nassau, and New York counties**. The order let physicians, nurses, and other professionals licensed in any U.S. state or Canada practice in New York temporarily.

On the picket lines, nurses weathered storms and sub-freezing temperatures. [**Mayor Mamdani**](https://www.democracynow.org/2026/1/21/new_york_nurses_strike_2026) and [**Senator Bernie Sanders**](https://www.democracynow.org/2026/1/21/new_york_nurses_strike_2026) joined nurses on Day 10. The [NAACP and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams](https://www.nysna.org/press/today-day-25-historic-nurse-strike-naacp-public-advocate-jumaane-williams-and-other-allies) showed up on Day 25. More than a dozen nurses were [arrested for civil disobedience](https://www.amny.com/news/nurses-strike-nyc-arrested-civil-disobedience/) during a "day of action" in the fourth week.

Negotiations dragged. A health-benefits agreement was reached on [**January 30**](https://www.nysna.org/press/striking-nyc-nurses-and-hospitals-reach-agreement-maintain-health-benefits), clearing a major hurdle. [AI protections](https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/nyc-nurses-strike-day-25-negotiations/) followed on Day 25. But it was not until **February 9** — a full **29 days** into the strike — that Montefiore and Mount Sinai finally signed comprehensive tentative agreements. NYSNA Executive Director [**Pat Kane**](https://www.nysna.org/press/victory-nurses-montefiore-mount-sinai-hospital-and-mount-sinai-morningside-and-west-reach) summed it up: "Nurses have shown that when we fight, we win."

## Why Is NewYork-Presbyterian Still Without a Deal?

While two-thirds of the striking workforce celebrated, roughly [**4,200 nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian**](https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/historic-nyc-nurse-strike-end/6447472/) remained on the picket line as of **February 9**. The sticking point is familiar: **safe staffing**. NYP [accepted a mediator's proposal](https://www.wsls.com/health/2026/02/09/nyc-nurses-reach-a-deal-to-end-a-strike-at-2-major-hospitals-while-walkout-continues-at-another/) covering pay raises, pensions, and health benefits, but the union says the staffing language still falls short.

The [NYC Council Progressive Caucus](https://www.nysna.org/press/nyc-council-progressive-caucus-joins-nysna-nurses-speak-out-safe-staffing-and-fair-contracts) has publicly backed the nurses' demands at NYP. NYSNA called the hospital's proposals "unserious" during the fourth week, noting that management [unlawfully fired three nurses](https://www.nysna.org/press/striking-nurses-demand-fair-contracts-and-immediate-reversal-unlawful-disciplines) just hours before the strike began and disciplined **14 nurse leaders** who spoke out about workplace violence.

For the [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) community tracking healthcare careers: if you are watching the NYP situation, expect negotiations to intensify now that the other two systems have settled. The pressure is on.

## Is This Part of a Bigger Trend in Healthcare Labor?

Absolutely. The NYC strike did not happen in a vacuum. As of early **February 2026**, the United States is seeing an [unprecedented wave of nurse strikes](https://nurse.org/articles/nurse-strikes-list/):

- [**31,000 Kaiser Permanente**](https://abcnews.go.com/Health/31000-nurses-health-care-workers-strike-kaiser-permanente/story?id=129559912) nurses and healthcare workers in California and Hawaii have been on an open-ended strike since **January 26**, with pharmacy and lab workers [joining the walkout on February 9](https://nurse.org/news/kaiser-strike-california-hawaii/).
- Nurses at [**Henry Ford Genesys Hospital**](https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/hr/4-healthcare-strikes-in-2026/) in Michigan remain on strike with no deal.
- Strikes are [**planned for February 18-19**](https://www.nationalnursesunited.org/press/reno-nurses-announce-feb-18-strike) at Prime facilities in Nevada and California, plus **Centinela Hospital** and **AHMC Seton Medical Center**.
- [Sharp HealthCare](https://nurse.org/news/sharp-nurse-strike/) nurses in San Diego ratified a **four-year** contract in **January 2026** after their own strike.

The numbers tell the story of why. The [Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/registered-nurses.htm) projects roughly **193,000 RN openings per year** through **2032**. [HRSA](https://bhw.hrsa.gov/sites/default/files/bureau-health-workforce/data-research/nursing-projections-factsheet.pdf) forecasts a national RN shortage of about **8%** by **2028**. According to [Nightingale College](https://nightingale.edu/blog/nursing-shortage-by-state.html), the projected nursing staff supply in **2026** will cover only **92%** of demand.

Meanwhile, **58%** of nurses report feeling burnout on most days, according to an [AMN Healthcare survey](https://ir.amnhealthcare.com/news-releases/news-release-details/nurses-speak-out-burnout-balance-and-future-profession-new). Only **39%** plan to stay in their current positions over the next **12 months**, per [Nurse.org research](https://nurse.org/articles/nurse-burnout-statistics/). Hospital turnover costs an estimated [**$37,700 to $58,400 per nurse**](https://peopleelement.com/blog/nursing-shortage-statistics-2025). When you are hemorrhaging both staff and money, the math eventually forces a reckoning.

## What Does This Mean for Anyone in Healthcare?

If you are a nurse, a nursing student, or anyone considering a healthcare career, this settlement is worth studying. A few key takeaways:

- **Compensation is climbing.** The average registered nurse salary in New York City is now [**$111,350**](https://www.indeed.com/career/registered-nurse/salaries/New-York--NY) per year, **12%** above the national average. With the new contracts adding another **12%+** over three years, top NYC hospital nurses could push well past [**$120,000**](https://resources.bandana.com/resources/highest-paid-nurses-in-nyc-actual-pay).
- **Unions are winning.** About [**20.4%**](https://www.registerednursing.org/articles/do-unions-benefit-harm-healthcare-nursing/) of U.S. nurses belong to a collective bargaining unit — well above the **13.1%** national average. [National Nurses United](https://www.nationalnursesunited.org/), the largest RN union, now represents over **225,000** members across all **50 states**. The NYC deal and the Kaiser strike are proof that collective action gets results.
- **AI clauses are the new frontier.** The Montefiore contract language — letting nurses override AI-generated care decisions — may become a template for [healthcare unions nationwide](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/thousands-nurses-go-strike-several-major-new-york-city-hospitals-rcna253552). Earlier in **2026**, [Northwell South Shore University Hospital](https://www.nysna.org/new-york-nurse/virtual-attack-our-union-voice) nurses became the first in New York State to secure a contract requiring review of AI technology before implementation.
- **Staffing law is still patchy.** California remains the [**only state with mandatory nurse-to-patient ratios**](https://nursejournal.org/articles/nurse-patient-ratios/) across all units. Only [**16 states**](https://nursejournal.org/articles/nurse-to-patient-staffing-ratio-laws-by-state/) have any hospital staffing laws at all. Federal legislation — the [Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act of 2025](https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/3415/text) — has been introduced but not passed.
