# Nigeria's Planned Ogun Port and Economic Zone Target 50,000 Direct Jobs, but the Deal Is Still at the Agreement Stage

Ogun's planned deep sea port and 10,000-hectare zone target 50,000+ direct jobs, but only MoUs are signed. The skills it would need and how to get ready now.

Nigeria's Ogun State has signed agreements for a planned deep sea port and a large factory zone on its coastline, and the job number attached to them is big. The [Ogun State Government and DP World](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/) signed memoranda of understanding in Paris for the Gateway Deep Sea Port and the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, projects that are expected to create [more than 50,000 direct jobs](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) at full development. Here is the plain answer for job seekers. The [State House release](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) announces no hiring. What was signed is a set of MoUs and a jobs target, and the [State House release](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) gives no construction start date. For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers, the official statements, the operator's own pages and its record elsewhere show what is real today and what is still a plan. Here is what was agreed, which skills the project would need and what you can do while you wait.

## What Was Actually Signed in Paris, and Is Anyone Hiring Yet?

The documents are memoranda of understanding between the [Ogun State Government and DP World MEA FZE](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/), signed in Paris with President Bola Tinubu watching. The State House release is dated [September 24, 2026](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/). An MoU sets out what the parties intend to do. It is not a construction contract, and it does not come with a vacancy list.

The federal side framed its role as support for the next step. The President promised the regulatory and institutional support needed to move the projects [from agreements to implementation](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/), and urged the state and investors to proceed expeditiously. That wording matters for you. Implementation is still ahead.

The Ogun delegation included the Secretary to the State Government, several commissioners and a [representative of the host community](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/). The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and the head of the [Nigerian Ports Authority](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) also attended, along with financial advisers from [SkyKapital](https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2026/09/24/7bn-ogun-deep-seaport-economic-zone-projects-to-create-50000-jobs-says-tinubu/).

So, is anyone hiring for the port? Neither the [State House release](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) nor the [Ogun State Government release](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/) names a recruiter, an application portal or a start date for construction. Anyone who asks you for money to secure a job at the new Ogun port is asking you to pay for a vacancy that has not been announced.

## Where Would the Port Be, and Why Does Its Depth Matter?

The port is planned for [a site at Ogun Waterside](https://thesun.ng/7bn-ogun-port-economic-zone-tinubu-assures-investors-of-policy-stability-50000-jobs/), with a four-kilometre berth and an 18-metre draft. Draft is the depth of water a ship needs, and a deeper draft lets bigger vessels call. The official aim is to take larger, deeper-draft vessels and to [ease pressure on the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports](https://businessday.ng/news/article/tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity-as-ogun-signs-mou-for-7bn-deep-sea-port/) in Lagos, cutting costs and delays for importers, exporters and consumers.

The zone that goes with it is proposed for [10,000 hectares](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/). The planned mix is [deep-sea shipping, manufacturing, logistics, processing and export](https://thesun.ng/7bn-ogun-port-economic-zone-tinubu-assures-investors-of-policy-stability-50000-jobs/) work in one place. That combination is the core of the plan. In the President's words, a port moves cargo, but [a port integrated with a special economic zone helps to build an economy](https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2026/09/24/7bn-ogun-deep-seaport-economic-zone-projects-to-create-50000-jobs-says-tinubu/).

The idea is not new. Governor Dapo Abiodun described the Ogun coastline port plan as largely unrealised for [more than three decades](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/). The state government's own release places the port inside a wider transport network that includes the [Gateway International Airport, dry ports and the coastal highway](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/).

## Where Does the 50,000 Jobs Figure Come From?

The number comes from the President's speech at the signing, as published in the [State House release](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/). The agreements envisage an initial investment of [more than $7 billion](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/), and the key sentence reads that at full development, the projects are projected to create more than 50,000 direct jobs and many additional indirect opportunities.

Three words in that sentence carry the meaning. Projected means it is an estimate. Full development means the figure describes the finished project, not the first phase. Direct is kept apart from the indirect opportunities, which are not given a number at all.

The figure is also a joint total for two projects, the port and the [Blue Marine Special Economic Zone](https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2026/09/24/7bn-ogun-deep-seaport-economic-zone-projects-to-create-50000-jobs-says-tinubu/), and no split between them has been published. The zone is described as [already attracting interest](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) from leading global manufacturing and industrial companies, but none of them is named, and interest is not a signed lease.

> The jobs figure is a projection for full development, [more than 50,000 direct jobs](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) across a port and a zone that are still at the agreement stage.

## Which Skills Would a Port and Economic Zone Need?

The official statements point to a broad set of trades rather than one kind of worker. The indirect jobs are expected across [logistics, manufacturing, maritime services, construction, technology](https://leadership.ng/ogun-deep-seaport-dp-world-new-pact-targets-7bn-investments-50000-jobs/) and small and medium-scale enterprises. The governor's list of opportunities covers [maritime services, logistics, manufacturing and technology](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/), with support for SMEs and supply chains.

Inside the zone, the plan is to turn [imported inputs into finished goods](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) and to process Nigerian raw materials for export. In practice that points to factory and processing work, not only jobs at the quayside.

DP World's own careers page shows how the operator itself organises hiring. It groups roles into [Commercial, Engineering, Finance, Operations, People and Technology](https://www.dpworld.com/en/careers) teams. Its engineering team develops solutions to make trade more efficient, and its operations team works to optimise processes and deliver seamless service. If you want to work for DP World itself rather than a company that sets up in the zone, those are the six doors.

A practical way to read this as a worker:

- **Trades and technicians.** Construction is on the [list of expected indirect work](https://leadership.ng/ogun-deep-seaport-dp-world-new-pact-targets-7bn-investments-50000-jobs/), and engineering is one of [DP World's six teams](https://www.dpworld.com/en/careers).
- **Logistics and warehousing.** The zone is planned around [manufacturing, logistics, processing and export](https://thesun.ng/7bn-ogun-port-economic-zone-tinubu-assures-investors-of-policy-stability-50000-jobs/) work, which means moving, storing and tracking goods.
- **Manufacturing and processing.** The zone is meant to convert [Nigerian raw materials into products](https://leadership.ng/ogun-deep-seaport-dp-world-new-pact-targets-7bn-investments-50000-jobs/) for domestic and international markets.
- **Technology and finance.** DP World lists [Technology and Finance](https://www.dpworld.com/en/careers) among its six teams.

None of these roles has been advertised for the Ogun project, and the statements do not list qualifications. Treat the list as a guide to which skills to build, not a promise of a vacancy, and put the ones you already have at the top of a [manufacturing resume built around skills](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/manufacturing-resume-skills).

## Does DP World Already Hire in Nigeria, and How Do You Apply?

Yes, at least one DP World recruitment notice for Nigeria appeared this year. A DP World recruitment notice posted on Hot Nigerian Jobs on [July 2, 2026](https://www.hotnigerianjobs.com/hotjobs/917537/dp-world-job-recruitment-8-positions.html) listed 10 positions, including a technical superintendent, a contract manager, a treasury manager and an apprentice for a technical workshop in Lagos, plus inventory controller roles in Oyo, Abuja and Delta. The notice is marked as [no longer open](https://www.hotnigerianjobs.com/hotjobs/917537/dp-world-job-recruitment-8-positions.html) on the site, and it is one notice, not a guide to the port's future headcount.

It does show the kind of roles the company has recruited for in Nigeria this year. Workshop, inventory, risk and compliance, and key accounts roles all appear in the [same notice](https://www.hotnigerianjobs.com/hotjobs/917537/dp-world-job-recruitment-8-positions.html). For a young technician, the apprentice workshop post is the kind of entry route worth watching for.

To apply for DP World jobs, go to the company's [own careers page](https://www.dpworld.com/en/careers) and use its View All Vacancies button, which opens its job board in a new tab. The same July notice describes DP World as a company with [more than 108,100 employees spanning 74 countries](https://www.hotnigerianjobs.com/hotjobs/917537/dp-world-job-recruitment-8-positions.html).

Keep your expectations realistic. The signing releases announced no Ogun port or zone roles, and the [President said](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) the zone is attracting interest from global manufacturing and industrial companies without naming any of them.

## What Does DP World's Jebel Ali Model Say About Jobs Over Time?

The governor pointed to [DP World's Jebel Ali Free Zone](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/) as the example of what a port joined to a special economic zone can do. That is a useful comparison, as long as you read the timeline too.

The [Jebel Ali Free Zone](https://www.jafza.ae/about/) started with 19 companies in 1985, grew past 500 businesses by 1995, and says on its [current about page](https://www.jafza.ae/about/) that it hosts more than 11,000. Its [own about page](https://www.jafza.ae/about/) puts the jobs it provides at 130,000+. That is four decades of growth, not a first phase.

DP World's own [anniversary release for the zone](https://www.dpworld.com/en/news/jafza-turns-40-with-record-190bn-in-trade), dated May 2025, goes further. Over the 20 years before that, the free zone and Jebel Ali Port together created [over one million direct and indirect jobs](https://www.dpworld.com/en/news/jafza-turns-40-with-record-190bn-in-trade), and the same model is now in place across 11 economic zones in Europe, India, Africa and the Americas, with three more in development.

The lesson for Ogun is about pace. The Jebel Ali numbers show what the model can reach at scale, and the dates show how long it took. The Ogun target is set for full development, and the statements give no figure at all for the first phase.

> Dubai's Jebel Ali zone grew from [19 companies in 1985](https://www.jafza.ae/about/) to more than 11,000, the long road behind the example Ogun's governor pointed to.

## How Fast Did DP World's Kenya Zone Move After Its First Agreement?

The closest recent example is DP World's plan in Kenya, and it shows the steps between an announcement and jobs. DP World and GulfCap Africa made public a partnership for the [Mombasa Industrial Park](https://www.dpworld.com/en/news/dp-world-and-gulfcap-africa-advance-mombasa-industrial-park-investment-with-shareholders-agreement) in early August, then signed a shareholders agreement on September 9, 2026 to formalise the joint venture.

The Kenyan zone is planned at 222 hectares, with a [first phase of 40 hectares](https://www.dpworld.com/en/news/dp-world-and-gulfcap-africa-advance-mombasa-industrial-park-investment-with-shareholders-agreement). More than 60 companies have expressed interest, and it is expected to support [more than 20,000 direct and indirect jobs](https://www.dpworld.com/en/news/dp-world-and-gulfcap-africa-advance-mombasa-industrial-park-investment-with-shareholders-agreement) upon completion.

Set the two side by side and the pattern is clear. The Kenyan project had already moved from announcement to a signed joint venture, and even then its jobs figure is for completion and covers direct and indirect work together. Ogun's paperwork is at the MoU stage. In Kenya, DP World's September release named a signed [shareholders agreement](https://www.dpworld.com/en/news/dp-world-and-gulfcap-africa-advance-mombasa-industrial-park-investment-with-shareholders-agreement) and a 40-hectare first phase. Those are the kinds of milestones to watch for in Nigeria.

## What Has to Happen Before the Jobs Appear?

Roads are the nearest milestone. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is described as central to the corridor, and its [28-kilometre Ogun State section](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) is scheduled for completion before the end of this year. That highway link is the first concrete milestone to track.

Money and power matter just as much. A [Leadership newspaper analysis](https://leadership.ng/ogun-deep-seaport-dp-world-new-pact-targets-7bn-investments-50000-jobs/) notes that the projected impact depends on mobilising financing, completing supporting infrastructure and turning the agreements into bankable and operational projects. The federal government has pledged to facilitate [road, rail and power connectivity](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/) and to hold all parties accountable for their commitments.

The host community is the third piece. The state government has stressed [host-community participation, environmental sustainability and security](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/) as the projects move ahead. If you live near Ogun Waterside, that is the channel to watch for any local hiring or training commitments, though the [state's release](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/) sets out no such commitments.

The governor summed up the gap himself, saying ceremonies [proclaim intentions](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/) and only implementation creates prosperity. That is the right standard for job seekers too.

## How Does This Compare With the Lekki Deep Sea Port?

Nigeria already has one recent deep sea port to learn from. The [Lekki Deep Sea Port](https://www.housingtvafrica.com/lekki-deep-sea-port-to-generate-360bn-create-170000-jobs-md/) began its concession in 2019, completed phase 1 of construction in 2022 and started commercial operations in April 2023. It has a depth of 16.5 meters and can receive [18,000 TEU vessels](https://www.housingtvafrica.com/lekki-deep-sea-port-to-generate-360bn-create-170000-jobs-md/).

The jobs claim for Lekki was also long term. Its managing director said in November 2025 that the port is projected to create [around 170,000 jobs over its 45-year concession](https://www.housingtvafrica.com/lekki-deep-sea-port-to-generate-360bn-create-170000-jobs-md/) period. Read the Ogun target in the same light, as a figure for a finished project and not for its opening year.

Lekki also shows the local side. Community representatives there praised the port's [youth empowerment, skills training and educational support](https://www.housingtvafrica.com/lekki-deep-sea-port-to-generate-360bn-create-170000-jobs-md/) programmes.

The Ogun plan is pitched at the same crowded market. Its purpose is to be an [alternative gateway to the congested Lagos port corridor](https://businessday.ng/news/article/dp-world-signs-mous-for-7bn-ogun-deep-seaport-economic-zone/), and the State House describes the port as a gateway for an African Continental Free Trade Area market of [approximately 1.4 billion people](https://statehouse.gov.ng/in-paris-as-ogun-state-dp-world-sign-mou-on-deep-sea-port-president-tinubu-assures-investors-of-regulatory-clarity/).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

Our take is simple. This is a real signal for the Lagos and Ogun logistics belt, but no timeline has been published. The headline number is honest about being a projection for full development, and the smart response is to build the skills a port and factory zone will need while the agreements are still at the MoU stage.

We would put our effort into skills that pay off whatever the Ogun timeline turns out to be. Logistics, warehousing, maintenance and manufacturing skills are not tied to one port, so training such as a [machinist certification for a manufacturing career](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/machinist-certification-manufacturing-career) keeps its value whatever happens at Ogun Waterside.

Here is what we would do now:

- **Track the milestones, not the headline.** The highway section, a formal joint venture or concession, and named tenants are the public milestones to watch.
- **Watch the official channels.** Ogun State Government releases and DP World's own careers page are the places to check for any real vacancies.
- **Build a trade you can take anywhere.** Logistics, forklift and warehouse skills, welding, electrical work and inventory control transfer between ports and factories.
- **Use DP World's recent hiring as practice.** Its [July notice in Nigeria](https://www.hotnigerianjobs.com/hotjobs/917537/dp-world-job-recruitment-8-positions.html) included apprentice and inventory roles, so study what those ask for.
- **If you live near Ogun Waterside, stay close to community structures.** The state government has stressed the importance of [host-community participation](https://ogtv.com.ng/2026/09/24/ogun-state-signs-landmark-mous-with-dp-world-for-deep-sea-port-and-blue-marine-special-economic-zone/).
- **Never pay for a promised port job.** The signing releases announced no recruitment for this project.
