OpenAI has announced the appointment of Paul M. Nakasone, a retired U.S. Army general and former director of the National Security Agency (NSA), to its board of directors. This strategic addition aims to bolster OpenAI's cybersecurity and safety measures as the company continues to expand its influence in the artificial intelligence sector.
Paul Nakasone brings a wealth of experience to OpenAI, having served as the longest-serving leader of U.S. Cyber Command and chief of the Central Security Service. His expertise in cybersecurity is expected to significantly enhance OpenAI's ability to detect and respond to cybersecurity threats.
“Mr. Nakasone's insights will also contribute to OpenAI's efforts to better understand how AI can be used to strengthen cybersecurity by quickly detecting and responding to cybersecurity threats,” OpenAI stated in a blog post.
Nakasone will also join OpenAI's recently created Safety and Security Committee. This committee is tasked with evaluating the company's processes and safeguards over a 90-day period before making recommendations to the board and eventually updating the public on their findings.
Nakasone's appointment follows the recent additions to OpenAI's board, which now includes notable figures such as Adam D'Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor, Sam Altman, Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo.
