Oracle employees who lost their jobs this week woke up to a termination email and a clock. The [Yahoo Finance report](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html) says the company [sent out termination emails at 6 a.m.](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html) on Monday, and, citing Business Insider, that Oracle [instructed laid-off workers to immediately sign the termination paperwork to secure their severance packages](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html). So what do they actually get? If the terms reported from Oracle's spring layoff round still apply, and that is not yet confirmed, the answer is four weeks of base pay, plus about a week for each year of service, with a hard ceiling of 26 weeks. At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) we cover layoffs from the worker's side, and this story is less about the cut itself than about the document that lands in your inbox after it. That document is where the money, and the fine print, lives.

## What happened

The termination email left little room for doubt. According to the email as reported by Business Insider and relayed in the [same Yahoo Finance account](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html), it told staff that [today is your last working day](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html), citing a broader organizational change as the reason. Workers were told that [severance eligibility remains subject to the terms and conditions of Oracle's severance plan](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html), with details on termination dates and compensation to be sent [via DocuSign to their corporate email addresses](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html). The same email warned that access to computers, email, voicemail and files [will be deactivated soon](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html).

That combination is the first thing any affected worker should notice. The severance details are arriving at a corporate inbox that is about to be switched off. If you are reading this before your access ends, the priority is to find out how you will receive and review the DocuSign envelope once the company account is gone, not to click through it.

This is not a one-off. The [Yahoo Finance report](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html) calls it [the company's third round of workforce reductions this year](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html), and, citing a Business Insider source, says managers had been told to submit lists of affected employees ahead of the second quarter, [which began September 1](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html). We looked at the scale of earlier cuts when [Oracle's headcount fell by tens of thousands in a year](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/oracle-headcount-dropped-21000-ai-work-tech-jobs-2026), so this piece focuses on what the latest group is being offered.

The severance formula itself comes from reporting on an earlier round. [TechCrunch reported in May](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/) that Oracle cut [an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people via email on March 31](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/), and one laid-off employee told the outlet that their severance offer arrived a few days after the termination notice.

> In exchange for signing a release waiving their right to sue, laid-off employees received [four weeks of pay for the first year, plus one additional week per year of service, capped at 26 weeks](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/), according to TechCrunch.

For that spring round, the same outlet reported that Oracle was [also paying for one month of COBRA insurance](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/), and that it did not accelerate soon-to-vest restricted stock units. According to [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/), [any shares that hadn't vested by the termination date were forfeited](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/).

Reporting from India fills in the rest of the formula. [Reporting at The Week](https://www.theweek.in/news/biz-tech/2026/09/15/oracle-layoffs-what-severance-pay-can-indian-workers-expect.html) says that according to documents Business Insider accessed in March, the plan [caps payments at 26 weeks of base salary](https://www.theweek.in/news/biz-tech/2026/09/15/oracle-layoffs-what-severance-pay-can-indian-workers-expect.html), and that [Indian workers' severance is expected to follow the same 26-week cap structure](https://www.theweek.in/news/biz-tech/2026/09/15/oracle-layoffs-what-severance-pay-can-indian-workers-expect.html). That matters for a company whose workforce is global. Oracle's own site, as cited in the [Yahoo Finance report](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html), credited its fiscal year 2025 results to [a global workforce of 141,000](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html). India has been hit before too, as our coverage of [Oracle job cuts in India](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/oracle-3000-india-job-cuts-microsoft-500-pip-2026) showed.

The money set aside is large, even if the individual checks are modest. [Quartz reports](https://qz.com/oracle-layoffs-plan-700-million-ai-data-centers-091426) that Oracle is expanding its restructuring plan by [approximately $700 million](https://qz.com/oracle-layoffs-plan-700-million-ai-data-centers-091426), bringing the total estimated cost to [roughly $2.8 billion](https://qz.com/oracle-layoffs-plan-700-million-ai-data-centers-091426). The plan covers [severance payments, contract termination fees, and related exit costs](https://qz.com/oracle-layoffs-plan-700-million-ai-data-centers-091426), and the company had recorded [roughly $2.1 billion in charges against the plan](https://qz.com/oracle-layoffs-plan-700-million-ai-data-centers-091426) through the end of August, according to Quartz. The extra money reflects [additional actions that we expect to take](https://qz.com/oracle-layoffs-plan-700-million-ai-data-centers-091426), in the company's own words, which is a signal that more notices may follow.

## Where the coverage agrees, and where it splits

The two outlets in this review that published the formula agree on its shape. It is a base amount, a small tenure top-up and a ceiling. [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/) and [the report at The Week](https://www.theweek.in/news/biz-tech/2026/09/15/oracle-layoffs-what-severance-pay-can-indian-workers-expect.html) both put the ceiling at 26 weeks, and both describe a starting block of four weeks. Both also describe access being cut off fast, which lines up with the email quoted in the [Yahoo Finance report](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html).

The wording of the top-up is where they diverge, and it is worth a close read. TechCrunch describes four weeks for the first year plus an extra week [per year of service](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/). The Week describes four weeks for the first year and one additional week's salary [for each year of employment thereafter](https://www.theweek.in/news/biz-tech/2026/09/15/oracle-layoffs-what-severance-pay-can-indian-workers-expect.html). Read literally, those two descriptions can produce a count that differs by a week at the same tenure. Neither outlet published the plan document itself, so the only version that counts is the one in your own DocuSign envelope. Check how it counts a partial year, and whether your start date is taken from your original hire or from an acquired company.

The second split is about timing. The formula was reported from the spring round, and the Monday email only says eligibility is [subject to the terms and conditions of Oracle's severance plan](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/tech-giant-oracle-rocked-another-174357071.html). The Week's piece on this round expects the same cap to apply to Indian workers, but that is an expectation, not a confirmed term, until you see the numbers in your own paperwork.

The framing splits as well. [Quartz](https://qz.com/oracle-layoffs-plan-700-million-ai-data-centers-091426) tells a spending story, noting that capital expenditures [climbed to $28.5 billion in the quarter ended August 31](https://qz.com/oracle-layoffs-plan-700-million-ai-data-centers-091426) while revenue rose to [$19.3 billion](https://qz.com/oracle-layoffs-plan-700-million-ai-data-centers-091426). TechCrunch tells a worker story, and it is the more useful one if you are holding the offer. It reports that some employees classified as remote learned that, outside states like California or New York, [the company said they didn't qualify for WARN Act protections](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/). The federal law, as [TechCrunch explains](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/), requires [two months notice](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/) and is triggered when [50 or more people are impacted at one location](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/).

> One former employee said WARN coverage did not necessarily extend severance in the spring round, because Oracle [included the two-months' WARN notice pay in its existing calculation of four-weeks, plus one week per year](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/), according to TechCrunch.

The comparisons with peers also come from different angles. [The Week](https://www.theweek.in/news/biz-tech/2026/09/15/oracle-layoffs-what-severance-pay-can-indian-workers-expect.html), relaying an assessment from earlier reporting rather than its own analysis, notes the package is [well below the severance offered by other industry players, including Microsoft and Salesforce, with 39 weeks and 30 weeks of pay, respectively](https://www.theweek.in/news/biz-tech/2026/09/15/oracle-layoffs-what-severance-pay-can-indian-workers-expect.html). [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/) instead calls the terms [fairly standard Corporate America terms](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/), then shows how far they trail big tech peers. It notes that Meta's package [started at 16 weeks of base pay, plus two weeks for every year of employment and covered COBRA for 18 months](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/). Both framings can be true at once. Oracle's terms are ordinary for American employers and thin for a large tech company, which is exactly why workers tried to push back. We broke down the other end of that range in our look at [how Microsoft's layoff payout scales by job level](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/microsoft-layoff-severance-39-weeks-pay-2026).

That pushback did not work. According to [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/), [at least 90 people signed a public petition](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/) asking Oracle to match peer terms, and [Oracle declined to negotiate](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/). The stakes of the stock rule were real for some. TechCrunch, citing Time, reported that one long-tenured employee [lost $1 million in stock that was just four months from vesting](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/).

What the coverage mostly glossed over is the law that governs the release itself. None of the reporting walks through what a US worker is entitled to before signing away claims, and that is where the primary documents come in. The [U.S. Department of Labor](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/wages/severancepay) is blunt that [there is no requirement in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for severance pay](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/wages/severancepay) and that severance [is a matter of agreement between an employer and an employee](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/wages/severancepay). In other words, the severance is what you get in exchange for the release. The release is the product being bought.

## What this means for your job search

Our take is simple. The formula is fixed, but your decision about when and how to sign is not, and that decision is where laid-off workers most often leave value or rights on the table. In the spring, Oracle showed it would not renegotiate the headline number. So the leverage you have is time, information and the rules that protect you regardless of what the company prefers.

Start with the age rules, because they apply to a large share of any long-tenured tech workforce. The [U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements) says that if you are [40 years old or older, federal law requires the employer to give you at least 21 days to review the agreement](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements). When the cut is a group layoff, the window is longer.

> If you and at least one other person are laid off at the same time, [you must be given 45 days to consider the agreement](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements), according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

After you sign, there is still a safety valve. The [EEOC guidance](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements) says a valid age waiver [must give an employee seven days to revoke his or her signature](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements), and that this revocation period [cannot be changed or waived by either party for any reason](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements). An instruction to sign immediately does not erase either window. It does mean you should read the envelope for the dates it states, and write them down somewhere that is not a company system.

Look for the disclosure page. In a group layoff, the [EEOC](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements) says the employer must tell you in writing about the decisional unit and list [the job titles and ages of all individuals who are eligible or who were selected for the program](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements). That list is the single most useful document for spotting whether older workers on your team were cut at a higher rate. Save a copy of it.

Check three more things in the release. The [EEOC guidance](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements) says an age waiver [must advise the employee in writing to consult an attorney before accepting the agreement](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements), must name the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and must be backed by [consideration in addition to that to which the employee already is entitled](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements). That last point is why the WARN detail matters. If notice pay you were owed anyway is folded into the severance total, ask in writing which part of the payment is the extra money you receive for signing.

Know what a signature cannot take from you. The [EEOC](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements) says that even with broad release language, [you can still file a charge with the EEOC if you believe you were discriminated against](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements). If you feel rushed, the agency's own checklist says [If you are being rushed, ask for more time. Put your request in writing.](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements)

Then do the health insurance math before any company-paid coverage runs out. The [U.S. Department of Labor](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/health-plans/cobra) says COBRA covers plans sponsored by [employers with 20 or more employees in the prior year](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/health-plans/cobra), and that qualified people may have to pay [up to 102% of the cost to the plan](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/health-plans/cobra). If your paperwork repeats the spring round's single paid month, the second month is where the real bill arrives. Price a marketplace plan or a spouse's plan now, while you still have a full month to compare. If health cover is what has kept you in a role you disliked, you are not alone, as our look at [workers stuck in jobs for the health insurance](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/1-in-4-workers-stuck-jobs-health-insurance) found.

Map your stock. Because unvested units [were forfeited](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/) at the termination date in the spring round, according to TechCrunch, pull your equity statement and note every grant, its vesting date and what was lost. That number is part of your real compensation history. It belongs in your next salary conversation, because a recruiter who only hears your base pay will anchor too low.

If severance is not money a law requires, and the [Department of Labor](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/wages/severancepay) confirms it is not, then non-cash items are where individual asks still sometimes land. Outplacement support, a neutral reference, a later separation date for benefits, or help with a visa timeline are all worth asking about in writing, even after a group petition failed. Our guide to [getting outplacement into a severance package](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/what-is-outplacement-severance-package-negotiate-2026) covers how to frame that request. If the plan does not pay what it promised, the [Department of Labor](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/wages/severancepay) says its Employee Benefits Security Administration [may be able to assist an employee who did not receive severance benefits under their employer-sponsored plan](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/wages/severancepay).

File for unemployment the week your job ends, not after the severance clears. Let your state agency decide how severance affects your claim instead of deciding for it. Our [step by step guide to applying for unemployment benefits](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/laid-off-2026-apply-unemployment-benefits-now) walks through what to have ready, and the reasons people put it off are covered in [why so many laid-off workers skip filing](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/why-laid-off-workers-skip-filing-unemployment-2026).

Finally, treat the severance period as runway, not a vacation. Whatever your count turns out to be, it is a fixed number of weeks, so the time to start talking to your network is now. Oracle staff bring cloud infrastructure, database and enterprise software experience that employers still hire for. Update your resume with outcomes rather than duties, lead with the systems you ran, and start conversations with former colleagues who left earlier in the year. They know who is hiring, and they remember what you built.

## People Also Asked

### Q: How much severance do laid-off Oracle workers get?

A: Based on terms reported earlier this year, [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/) says employees received four weeks of pay for the first year plus one additional week per year of service, capped at 26 weeks, in exchange for a release. That formula is from the spring round and is not yet confirmed for this week's cuts. The exact count for your tenure is in your own DocuSign paperwork, so check how partial years are treated.

### Q: Do I have to sign Oracle's severance agreement right away?

A: Workers were told to sign immediately to secure severance, but if you are 40 or older the [EEOC](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/qa-understanding-waivers-discrimination-claims-employee-severance-agreements) says a valid age waiver in a group layoff must allow 45 days to consider it and seven days to revoke after signing. Read the dates stated in your document and ask for more time in writing if they are shorter.

### Q: Does Oracle severance include health insurance and stock?

A: In the spring round, [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/08/laid-off-oracle-workers-tried-to-negotiate-better-severance-oracle-said-no/) reported one month of paid COBRA and no accelerated vesting, so unvested shares were forfeited at termination. After that month, the [Department of Labor](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/health-plans/cobra) says COBRA can cost up to 102% of the plan's cost, so compare other coverage early.
