Tire maker [Pirelli](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/) expects to create [around 1,000 new jobs](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/) at its plant in Rome, Georgia, but most of those jobs are years away. The company expects to begin [the bulk of hiring in 2029](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion), with the facility projected to reach full operations in 2033. That gap is the real story for anyone in northwest Georgia who wants one of these jobs, because it leaves time to train for them. At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) we read factory announcements for the hiring timeline and the skills behind the headline number, and this one rewards the job seekers who start preparing now rather than when the ads appear.

## How Many Jobs Is Pirelli Actually Adding in Rome?

The headline number sits on top of a small existing workforce. Pirelli currently employs [234 Georgians](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion) through its manufacturing, innovation and headquarters operations in the state. Governor Brian Kemp said the expansion gives Pirelli [roughly five times more positions](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion) than it currently employs across the region. In the Atlanta daily's account, the new jobs would be [nearly quintupling](https://www.ajc.com/business/2026/09/pirelli-announces-12b-georgia-tire-plant-expansion-with-1000-jobs/) its Georgia workforce.

The money behind it is large. The board of Pirelli & C. in Milan approved an investment plan worth [approximately €1 billion](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/), or around $1.2 billion, on September 22. The vote was not unanimous. Three board members, Zhang Haitao, Xi Xiaohong and Wang Kun, [voted against it](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/), and the plan passed by majority.

This is an expansion of a plant that already exists, not a new site. Pirelli located its U.S. headquarters and manufacturing facility in Rome in [2002](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion), at 100 Pirelli Drive. The original campus cost [$140 million](https://drucktoday.substack.com/p/boom-pirelli-plans-12-billion-rome) and covered 400,000 square feet on 120 acres. Rome sits roughly [70 miles northwest](https://www.ajc.com/business/2026/09/pirelli-announces-12b-georgia-tire-plant-expansion-with-1000-jobs/) of downtown Atlanta, so the daily commute is likely to favor people living in and around Floyd County over metro Atlanta residents.

The Floyd County Government also framed the project around [1,000 new jobs](https://www.local3news.com/local-news/1-2b-pirelli-expansion-to-bring-1k-jobs-to-rome-ga/article_e77e5012-1570-44c5-b4e9-7cdb28d3c698.html) and expanded advanced manufacturing opportunities, and the chair of the county commission called Pirelli a [tremendous community partner](https://www.local3news.com/local-news/1-2b-pirelli-expansion-to-bring-1k-jobs-to-rome-ga/article_e77e5012-1570-44c5-b4e9-7cdb28d3c698.html) for more than 20 years.

## Why Does Most of the Hiring Wait Until 2029?

Pirelli says the timeline is [consistent with the industrial requirements](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/) of its High Value segment, and the build order explains the rest. The expansion comes in two stages, and the second stage is the one the state says will require more hiring.

Pirelli's own release lays out the order. The plan will be carried out over several years [starting in 2027](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/). The first phase is a gradual increase in robotized production using the latest version of MIRS, which stands for Modular Integrated Robotized System, a proprietary Pirelli technology. That robotized capacity starts rising from [2028](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/) and eventually reaches 3 million tyres a year.

The second phase is the one tied to new hiring. Pirelli describes it as a [fully automated conventional production facility](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/) dedicated to premium products, adding another 3 million tyres a year at full operation. The state describes the same step as the addition of a [traditional manufacturing process](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion) that will require more hiring. Read together, the two descriptions tell you what kind of plant this will be. Even the phase that brings more hiring is described by Pirelli as fully automated, so the jobs are likely to lean toward running, monitoring and maintaining equipment rather than lifting tires by hand.

The scale of the jump is large. Production capacity at the Rome site is set to rise from [450,000 to 6 million tires](https://www.wrganews.com/2026/09/22/pirelli-formalizes-1-2-billion-investment-in-rome/) a year.

There is also a demand condition written into the plan. Pirelli says the expansion will let it grow capacity [in a gradual manner](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/) and in line with the evolution of demand. That wording matters for job seekers. The [hiring start and the full operations date](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion) are projections, and the company has left itself room to pace the build to the market.

> Pirelli expects to begin [the bulk of hiring in 2029](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion), which gives anyone who wants these jobs several years to build the right skills first.

## What Will the New Jobs Pay?

The figure to plan around is an average. A project summary in local coverage, drawn from the company, state, city and development authority releases, puts the new jobs at a [$56,987 average annual wage](https://drucktoday.substack.com/p/boom-pirelli-plans-12-billion-rome), alongside a total investment of $1.213 billion.

Other local coverage described the pay differently, as [salaries starting at over $56,000](https://www.wrganews.com/2026/09/22/pirelli-formalizes-1-2-billion-investment-in-rome/) a year. The two are not the same thing. An average across [the full set of new jobs](https://drucktoday.substack.com/p/boom-pirelli-plans-12-billion-rome) blends every role in the plan, so it is not a promise of what any single job will pay. None of the releases gives pay by role or an hourly rate for production work.

Until pay by role is posted, use the average as a guide to the plant as a whole, and compare any offer against the job's own duties and shift pattern rather than against the headline figure.

Pirelli has not published a benefits package for the new roles either, so treat any number you see beyond the average wage as unconfirmed until the company posts actual vacancies.

## What Kinds of Roles Will the Rome Plant Need?

Pirelli has not released job titles, so the honest answer comes from what the plant will make and how.

The first clue is the technology. The Rome plant will be able to produce Pirelli's most advanced products, including [its Cyber Tyre system](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/), which [WSB-TV Atlanta describes](https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/international-tire-manufacturer-announces-1000-job-georgia-expansion/MZ6R5KQIOJC4PFRBLYJEUZ2IZQ/) as a connected tire system. Pirelli obtained [authorization from the Bureau of Industry and Security](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/) to market the system in the United States. The company's North America chief framed the investment around [latest-generation technologies](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion) such as Cyber Tyre and advanced robotics.

The second clue is the production style. Pirelli says the High Value segment requires [highly specialized manufacturing processes](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/), small batch management of a broad product mix, and integration of proprietary technologies. Small batches and many product types are likely to mean frequent changeovers, which would put a premium on people who can set up, adjust and troubleshoot machines.

The third clue is the existing site. The current Georgia workforce spans [manufacturing, innovation and headquarters](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion) operations, so some future roles may sit off the factory floor.

Putting those together, the likely demand falls into a few groups:

- Production operators who run automated tire building and curing equipment
- Maintenance technicians who keep robotics, motors, controls and fluid power systems running
- Quality and process technicians for a plant making premium, small batch products
- Engineering, logistics and office roles that support the plant and the existing headquarters

Treat that list as a reading of the plan, not a hiring notice. The skills in the maintenance group are the ones worth building now, because a heavily automated plant stops when its equipment does.

## How Does Georgia Quick Start Training Work?

This is the part of the deal that matters most to people without factory experience. The state's economic development team worked on the project in partnership with the Rome-Floyd Development Authority, [Georgia Quick Start](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion) and Georgia Power.

The [Georgia Quick Start program](https://www.georgiaquickstart.org/about-us/) is a discretionary incentive that provides customized, company specific workforce training at no cost to companies investing in and creating jobs in Georgia. It dates back to [1967](https://www.georgiaquickstart.org/about-us/), when the state passed legislation to create a free training organization to attract new industry.

Its own description of the process has four parts. Quick Start first meets with company leadership, subject matter experts and operations teams to [define the scope of training](https://www.georgiaquickstart.org/what-we-do/). It then maps out a training plan unique to each company, with an emphasis on visual learning and hands on training. It delivers that training whenever and wherever it makes sense for the project, and it keeps the company's methods confidential.

A site selection page from the [Electric Cities of Georgia network](https://www.locationgeorgia.com/advantages/training/quick-start/) adds useful detail. It says the program helps companies assess, select and train the right people, and provides training space, instructors and all needed materials.

The program has worked with a tire maker before. Quick Start lists [the Toyo Tires project](https://www.georgiaquickstart.org/about-us/) among its polymers work, and its listed training centers include a [training complex in Cartersville](https://www.georgiaquickstart.org/about-us/).

For a job seeker, the key point is that this training is company specific, built around one employer's jobs rather than offered as an open course. Neither Pirelli nor the state has published when a Quick Start program for the expansion will run or how applicants will be selected. When hiring opens, watch for pre hire training or assessment steps tied to the Quick Start partnership.

## What Can You Do Before 2029 to Get Ready?

Use the years before hiring opens to build skills that transfer to any automated plant, and lean on Georgia's free and low cost training.

The local technical college is [Georgia Northwestern Technical College](https://www.gntc.edu/location/floyd-county-campus/), whose Floyd County Campus sits at One Maurice Culberson Drive in Rome. The college's Automation Technology program, formerly called Industrial Systems Technology, prepares students for work as an [industrial systems technician or electrician](https://www.gntc.edu/industrial-systems/). The program covers electronics, industrial wiring, motors, controls, PLCs, instrumentation, fluid power, mechanical systems, pumps and piping, and computers. Ask the college which campus runs each part of the program before you enroll.

You do not have to commit to a full degree to start. The same program offers certificates, including a Robotic Technician certificate, a [Basic Mechatronics Specialist certificate](https://www.gntc.edu/industrial-systems/), Industrial Mechatronics, Industrial Motor Controls Technician and a Project SUCCESS Manufacturing Specialist certificate. Any of those fits the maintenance and automation roles a plant like this depends on.

Paying for it may be easier than you think. Georgia's economic development department notes that the state's technical college system has [22 colleges across 88 locations](https://georgia.org/competitive-advantages/workforce-education), and that programs such as the HOPE Scholarship and HOPE Career Grant offer free tuition for 18 high demand career fields. The [HOPE Career Grant](https://www.gafutures.org/hope-state-aid-programs/hope-zell-miller-grants/hope-career-grant/) is open to HOPE Grant qualified students who enroll in select majors aligned with industries that have more jobs than skilled workers to fill them. Check with the college which of its automation programs currently qualify.

The same state page points to [WorkSource Georgia](https://georgia.org/competitive-advantages/workforce-education) as another workforce training resource that benefits companies across the state. The page frames it as a resource for employers, so ask the local office directly what it offers individual job seekers.

> The new Rome jobs carry a [$56,987 average annual wage](https://drucktoday.substack.com/p/boom-pirelli-plans-12-billion-rome), and automation skills can be learned at a local technical college before hiring opens.

## Who Else Is Competing for Workers in Northwest Georgia?

Pirelli will not be hiring into an empty market. The Rome expansion is the latest in a series of large investments in the region, including the [$5 billion SK On and Hyundai](https://drucktoday.substack.com/p/boom-pirelli-plans-12-billion-rome) battery plant between Cartersville and Rome, a $2.5 billion Qcells solar panel plant in Cartersville, and planned data centers such as a $1 billion Microsoft project in West Rome.

For job seekers, that competition can cut in your favor. If several large employers end up drawing on the same pool of maintenance technicians, electricians and production workers, skilled people would have more than one option. Skills learned for one of these plants, such as PLC troubleshooting or industrial electrical work, are likely to carry across to the others.

It also means the timing of each project matters. A battery plant or data center may be hiring well before Pirelli's bulk hiring begins, so a job there could be a way to gain automated plant experience that makes you a stronger candidate later. For how a large plant build can reshape a regional job market, see our look at [the Hyundai hiring surge around Savannah](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/savannah-job-boom-hyundai-plant).

## Why Did Pirelli Choose to Grow in Georgia?

The U.S. is where Pirelli sees room to grow. Pirelli says the United States is the world's largest market for the High Value tire segment, accounting for [approximately 40% of global volumes](https://press.pirelli.com/pirelli-board-of-directors-majority-approves-us-multi-year-investment-plan-of-approximately-1-billion/). Building there supports what it calls a local for local strategy, strengthens supply chain resilience and meets demand for Made in USA products.

The site was not guaranteed. Pirelli's vice president of public affairs and sustainability for North America, Maureen Kline, said the company [looked at other sites](https://drucktoday.substack.com/p/boom-pirelli-plans-12-billion-rome) for the expansion before deciding Rome was a good location.

Relationships played a part. The groundwork was laid in [2024](https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/international-tire-manufacturer-announces-1000-job-georgia-expansion/MZ6R5KQIOJC4PFRBLYJEUZ2IZQ/), when Governor Brian Kemp and first lady Marty Kemp traveled to Italy on an economic mission and met directly with Pirelli's senior executives. The [governor's office called](https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/international-tire-manufacturer-announces-1000-job-georgia-expansion/MZ6R5KQIOJC4PFRBLYJEUZ2IZQ/) the announcement one of the largest economic development investments in northwest Georgia's history.

The company's research profile is also worth knowing if you are aiming at the innovation side of the site. Pirelli committed [5.6% of High Value revenues](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion) to research and development in 2025.

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

The honest read is that this is a strong jobs story with a long fuse. The expansion is real and board-approved, but the bulk of the hiring is still years away, and Pirelli has tied the pace of the build to demand. Anyone who plans around the [expected hiring window](https://gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2026-09-22/gov-kemp-pirelli-invest-12-billion-georgia-expansion) should treat it as a target, not a promise.

That delay is an advantage if you use it. The people best placed for these roles will be the ones who arrive with automation, electrical or maintenance skills already in hand, not the ones who start training when the job ads appear. An automation certificate from Georgia Northwestern Technical College is a better bet than waiting. Check which campus offers it and how long it takes.

Here is a practical plan:

- Start a short automation or mechatronics certificate now, and ask whether it qualifies for the HOPE Career Grant.
- Get hands on experience at another automated plant in the region if one is hiring sooner.
- Build a resume that names equipment, controls and safety standards you have worked with. Our guide to [manufacturing jobs, salaries and skills](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/manufacturing-jobs) explains what plant employers look for.
- Watch for Pirelli's vacancies on the company's own [corporate website](https://www.pirelli.com/) and for any pre hire training tied to Georgia Quick Start.
- If you already work in production, ask your current employer about cross training on maintenance or robotics, since that experience transfers directly.

The [average wage](https://drucktoday.substack.com/p/boom-pirelli-plans-12-billion-rome) is the headline, but the durable value is the skill set. Automation skills learned for Pirelli are likely to be useful across northwest Georgia whether the plant hits its target date or not.
