## Remote Work Isn’t Going Anywhere

While headlines keep hyping return-to-office drama, most U.S. businesses are quietly moving on — and keeping remote work right where it is.

According to a 2025 study using data from the [**U.S. Census Bureau**](https://www2.census.gov/library/working-papers/2025/adrm/ces/CES-WP-25-36.pdf), which surveyed over **150,000 businesses** from November 2024 to January 2025, remote work has found its sweet spot. About **31% of companies** report having remote employees, and those employees are logging an average of **1.04 days per week** from home.

The most surprising part? Companies expect about one remote day a week, roughly the same, in **2029**.

In short: remote work isn’t retreating. It’s just stopped being news.

## No One’s Policing Your Desk Chair

If you thought companies were all-in on badge swipes and mouse-tracking software, the data paints a different picture:

- Just **4.1% of companies** enforce a **formal minimum office day policy**.
- In the information sector, which includes much of tech and is often portrayed as strict on RTO, only **6.9%** have quotas.
- **70% of businesses don’t track attendance** at all.
- And **75% don’t monitor remote workers** entirely.

Remote work has shifted from "controversial policy" to "boring operations line item." Companies no longer see it as risky or revolutionary — just practical.

## Productivity: Not the Issue Anymore

If you're wondering why companies aren’t cracking down harder, the answer is simple: **productivity is not the main worry**.

- **15.6% of firms** say there’s no difference in productivity between in-person and remote employees.
- Just **6.6%** believe in-person workers outperform their remote peers.

Instead, what limits remote work is what *can’t* be done from home.

- **61% of companies say remote work is not feasible** for some jobs, the top challenge — meaning industries like healthcare, food service, or construction simply require on-site presence.
- But in sectors like **information services**, workers average **2.86 remote days per week**.
- Compare that to **accommodation and food services**, where the average is a mere **0.13 days** — nearly zero.

## Employers Are Playing the Long Game

One of the most telling findings? Employers expect this hybrid model to **stay about the same through 2029**.

That means no dramatic RTO swings, no mass digital nomad pivots, no universal four-day workweeks. Just… steady hybrid.

This makes sense. Remote work isn’t an experiment anymore — it’s a **cost-benefit equation** baked into the infrastructure. Once you’ve built flexible work into your real estate, tools, and hiring pipeline, it’s not something you rip out on a whim.

## Employees Get It, Too

What used to be a battleground over flexibility is now a non-negotiable.

For employees, working from home one or two days a week has become part of **standard job expectations**. Even for companies still hiring in-office roles, the **option** of remote work is a retention tool — and not offering it can hurt recruiting.

In this new era, **remote work isn't a perk**. It's the parking lot. You don’t brag about it. You just expect it to be there.
