# Waymo Robotaxis Join Lyft in Nashville as a 2024 Study Says Frontline Taxi Jobs Could Fall 57 to 76 Percent

Frontline taxi jobs could fall 57 to 76 percent under robotaxis, a 2024 Transport Policy study says. Waymo is now on Lyft in Nashville. What drivers can do.

Waymo robotaxis began matching riders on the Lyft app in Nashville on September 9, 2026, [according to Lyft's announcement](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville), and [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/) describes it as [Lyft's first true entry into commercial robotaxi services using driverless vehicles without a human operator behind the wheel](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/). The jobs answer has two parts. Lyft's subsidiary Flexdrive handles the fleet and depot side, and a December 2024 study in the journal Transport Policy estimates that [frontline jobs could decrease by between 57% and 76% if work shifts from traditional taxi to robotaxi services](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0967070X2400283X). At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) we looked at what the deal shows about which roles grow and which ones shrink.

## What happened

Under the partnership, [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/) reports that [Lyft handles fleet services, such as vehicle readiness and maintenance, as well as infrastructure and depot operations, through its wholly owned subsidiary Flexdrive](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/). Lyft's own release says Flexdrive [will open a purpose-built, 80,000-square-foot depot in October](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville), bringing more than a decade of experience managing high-mileage rideshare vehicles to autonomy. The release describes the work plainly, saying [getting a car all the way to the rider's curb takes a team on the ground keeping every vehicle road-ready](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville).

The rider side is spelled out too. [Lyft says](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville) riders requesting a Standard, Priority Pickup, Wait and Save or Extra Comfort ride in central Nashville [will begin to be matched with a Waymo vehicle at no additional cost](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville), on routes that start and end inside a service area covering Downtown and Broadway, North Nashville and Germantown, East Nashville, Midtown and South Nashville. The company also says [human drivers will continue to serve riders throughout and around the service area](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville), creating a hybrid network of human-driven and autonomous vehicles. Nashville is [the first market where Waymo vehicles are available across both the Waymo and Lyft apps](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville), and availability will grow gradually over the coming weeks. Lyft says the two companies are [dispatching vehicles from a single fleet dynamically across both networks](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville), and that [riders can always decline an autonomous ride or opt out of them entirely](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville).

The deal was a year in the making. [Waymo announced the Nashville partnership in September 2025](https://waymo.com/blog/2025/09/waymo-is-coming-to-nashville-in-partnership-with-lyft/), saying it would start fully autonomous operations in the city in the coming months and open to public riders the following year. It framed the deal as pairing its technology with [Lyft's proven track record of fleet management through its Flexdrive subsidiary](https://waymo.com/blog/2025/09/waymo-is-coming-to-nashville-in-partnership-with-lyft/).

Lyft has been here before. [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/) notes the company [spent four years and millions of dollars developing its own AV tech under its Level 5 business division](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/), then [sold its autonomous vehicle unit to Toyota's Woven Planet Holdings subsidiary for $550 million in 2021](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/). TechCrunch adds that Lyft has more than dabbled in autonomous vehicle technology over the years, [including through partnerships with Aptiv (now Motional) in Las Vegas, May Mobility in Atlanta, Baidu in London, and Waymo in Phoenix](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/). In Nashville it returns as the operator that keeps another company's driverless fleet on the road.

Its biggest rival is cutting at head office in the same season. [Reporting at HR Executive](https://hrexecutive.com/uber-cuts-10-of-workforce-tightens-return-to-office-rules/) says Uber is [laying off about 3,300 employees, or roughly 10% of its global workforce](https://hrexecutive.com/uber-cuts-10-of-workforce-tightens-return-to-office-rules/) as it removes management layers, and calls it [Uber's third disclosed round of job cuts this year](https://hrexecutive.com/uber-cuts-10-of-workforce-tightens-return-to-office-rules/). The same report says that in June Uber [cut 23% of its People and Places organization](https://hrexecutive.com/uber-cuts-10-of-workforce-tightens-return-to-office-rules/), and, citing Bloomberg, that in July it [cut about 10% of jobs in Community Operations, its customer-service group](https://hrexecutive.com/uber-cuts-10-of-workforce-tightens-return-to-office-rules/). Those were corporate and support roles rather than driving work. For the management side of that story, see [what Uber's flatter org chart means for middle managers](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/uber-cuts-3300-jobs-flatter-org-chart-middle-managers-2026).

## Where the coverage agrees, and where it splits

The sources agree on the basic division of labour. [Waymo](https://waymo.com/blog/2025/09/waymo-is-coming-to-nashville-in-partnership-with-lyft/) describes the deal as pairing its technology and ride-hailing service with Lyft's fleet management, and [Lyft's release](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville) says Flexdrive is providing fleet management for Waymo in Nashville. The company announcements talk about riders, promising more choice, reliability and access. The research literature is where a number for the jobs appears.

In a November 2024 post, [George Washington University](https://engineering.gwu.edu/rethinking-road-what-shift-robotaxis-means-jobs-and-society) reports that researchers in its Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering found [a shift to robotaxis would decrease the total number of frontline jobs by between 57% and 76%](https://engineering.gwu.edu/rethinking-road-what-shift-robotaxis-means-jobs-and-society). The underlying study, [a December 2024 paper in the journal Transport Policy](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0967070X2400283X) titled Modeling the operational and labor costs of autonomous robotaxi services, states that [if jobs shift from traditional taxi to robotaxi services, the total number of frontline jobs could decrease by between 57% and 76%, but the distribution of worker wages would shift higher](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0967070X2400283X). The authors built cost models and drew on [semi-structured interviews with AV operational and regulatory experts (N = 27)](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0967070X2400283X) to produce what they describe as the most detailed accounting of frontline robotaxi labor roles to date.

> Frontline jobs could decrease by between 57% and 76% if work shifts from traditional taxi to robotaxi services, [according to the December 2024 study in Transport Policy](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0967070X2400283X).

The research does not describe a future without workers. [George Washington University](https://engineering.gwu.edu/rethinking-road-what-shift-robotaxis-means-jobs-and-society) says [a shift wouldn't eliminate the need for workers, instead it creates new roles in the industry, meaning labor will remain a significant operational cost as worker wages will also shift higher](https://engineering.gwu.edu/rethinking-road-what-shift-robotaxis-means-jobs-and-society). The paper itself finds that [labor remains a significant cost for existing robotaxi services but that robotaxi operating costs are still lower than those of traditional taxi services](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0967070X2400283X). The modelled outcome is fewer frontline jobs, a wage distribution that shifts higher, and work that looks different from driving.

The paper also names what decides whether a robotaxi service can compete, finding that [utilization rates and annual mileage will serve as the most influential factors for robotaxi competitiveness](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0967070X2400283X). It is a cost model rather than a timetable, so it explains what makes a service viable, not when one will reach a given city. Nashville is one launch among several, alongside [Waymo's wider city expansion](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/waymo-14-cities-robotaxi-expansion-driver-jobs), [the robotaxi launch in London](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/london-robotaxi-launch-safety-driver-jobs) and [China's approach to robotaxis and driver jobs](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/china-robotaxi-slowdown-driver-jobs).

The second split is about the starting point for drivers. The [UC Berkeley Labor Center](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/) published a May 2024 report that analysed [52,370 trips by 1,088 drivers who worked on six passenger and delivery platforms in five major metro areas](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/), using earnings data from January 2022. Among California gig passenger drivers, it found [the median hourly employee-equivalent wage equaled $5.97 without tips and $7.63 with tips](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/). That measure [adjusts net earnings to account for the cost of employer payroll taxes that drivers must pay and for the value of mandated employee benefits](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/).

> The median hourly employee-equivalent wage for California gig passenger drivers was $5.97 without tips in January 2022 data, [according to the UC Berkeley Labor Center](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/).

The report sets those figures against Proposition 22, the [2020 California ballot measure that promised drivers would earn at least 120 percent of local minimum wages](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/). On a separate measure, earnings after expenses over a driver's entire shift, the Labor Center found that [a majority of drivers in each of the five metro areas earned less than the applicable minimum wage](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/). It also found that [even with adjustment payments to drivers who earned less than Proposition 22's guarantees, passenger drivers in California earned less than their counterparts in Boston, Chicago, and Seattle](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/). Outside California, [passenger drivers' employee-equivalent pay equaled $9.18 across the other metro areas, and tips added about 20 percent](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/).

Federal data gives a wider view of the driving workforce, and it points the other way. The [Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/taxi-drivers-and-chauffeurs.htm) counts [455,700 jobs for taxi drivers, shuttle drivers and chauffeurs in 2025](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/taxi-drivers-and-chauffeurs.htm) and reports that [the median annual wage for taxi drivers was $42,100 in May 2025](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/taxi-drivers-and-chauffeurs.htm). It projects employment in that group to [grow 9 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 55,900 openings each year](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/taxi-drivers-and-chauffeurs.htm). The agency says [many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/taxi-drivers-and-chauffeurs.htm). The occupation page does not mention autonomous vehicles. That is the clearest split in the sources. The federal projection covers the whole occupation group over the decade, while the Transport Policy model estimates how many frontline jobs a full shift to robotaxis could remove.

## What this means for your job search

Look at the depot side of the business. In Nashville, Lyft's role covers [vehicle readiness, maintenance, infrastructure and depot operations](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/), and its release says Flexdrive [will open a purpose-built, 80,000-square-foot depot in October](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville). Search for fleet, maintenance and vehicle operations roles in cities where these services launch, and read each posting to see whether it is an employee role or contract work, because the announcements do not say.

A useful federal benchmark for maintenance work is automotive service technicians. The [Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/automotive-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm) reports that [the median annual wage for automotive service technicians and mechanics was $50,620 in May 2025](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/automotive-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm), and projects [about 66,200 openings for automotive service technicians and mechanics each year](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/automotive-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm) over the decade. It notes that technicians [must be familiar with electronic systems and sensors, such as those used for braking, transmission, and accident avoidance](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/automotive-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm), and that [some workers enter the occupation with a high school diploma and learn on the job](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/automotive-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm), although certification may be required. For more detail on pay and certifications, see [what automotive technicians make](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/how-much-do-automotive-technicians-make).

Describe the work, not the app. Commercial driving involves inspecting a vehicle, planning routes, handling customers and documenting incidents. The same federal page lists technician duties that include documenting vehicle condition and [explaining automotive problems and repairs to clients](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/automotive-service-technicians-and-mechanics.htm). Write those tasks into an application in plain terms, because a platform name alone tells a fleet manager little about whether you can spot a fault or talk a customer through a delay.

Watch your own market rather than national headlines. The Transport Policy paper ties robotaxi competitiveness to [utilization rates and annual mileage](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0967070X2400283X), and Lyft says that in Nashville [human drivers will continue to serve riders throughout and around the service area](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville). If you drive in a launch city, learn where the service area begins and ends, because Lyft limits Waymo matching to routes that start and end inside it.

Keep your records. Platform work leaves your history inside an app you may lose access to. Export your trip counts, your years active, your ratings and your earnings statements while the account is live, and keep them somewhere you control, such as a spreadsheet or a folder. Those records support a job application, a tax return or a benefits claim. ## People Also Asked

### Q: How many driving jobs could robotaxis actually replace?

A: A [December 2024 study in the journal Transport Policy](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0967070X2400283X) by George Washington University researchers estimates that if jobs shift from traditional taxi to robotaxi services, the total number of frontline jobs could decrease by between 57% and 76%, though the distribution of worker wages would shift higher. That is a modelled shift rather than a forecast for a specific year.

### Q: What jobs does a robotaxi operation actually create?

A: In Nashville, [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/13/techcrunch-mobility-lyft-has-entered-the-robotaxi-chat/) reports Lyft handles fleet services including vehicle readiness and maintenance, plus infrastructure and depot operations, through its Flexdrive subsidiary, and [Lyft says](https://investor.lyft.com/news-events-presentations/press-releases/detail/204/waymo-rides-now-available-on-the-lyft-app-in-nashville) Flexdrive will open an 80,000-square-foot depot in October. [George Washington University](https://engineering.gwu.edu/rethinking-road-what-shift-robotaxis-means-jobs-and-society) researchers also found the shift creates new roles rather than removing the need for workers.

### Q: How much do gig drivers actually earn?

A: A May 2024 [UC Berkeley Labor Center](https://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/gig-passenger-and-delivery-driver-pay-in-five-metro-areas/) report, using January 2022 data on 52,370 trips by 1,088 drivers, found the median hourly employee-equivalent wage for California gig passenger drivers was $5.97 without tips and $7.63 with tips. The [Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/taxi-drivers-and-chauffeurs.htm) puts the median annual wage for taxi drivers at $42,100 in May 2025.
