# More Than Half of South Korean Workers Now Earn Over 3 Million Won (About $2,260) a Month, and the 5 Million Won (About $3,770) Club Hits a Record

Over half of South Korea's wage workers, 51.9%, earned 3 million won (about $2,260) a month or more in April 2026, and 17.6% hit 5 million won (about $3,770).

[More than half of South Korea's wage workers, 51.9%, earned 3 million won (about $2,260) or more a month](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882) in the first half of 2026, [the first time that share has passed half](https://biz.heraldcorp.com/article/10916307) (translated). The figures come from the [2026 first-half Regional Employment Survey on the industry and occupation of employed people](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), released on [Tuesday, October 27 by the Ministry of Data and Statistics](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882). The top band grew too, as [17.6% earned at least 5 million won (about $3,770) a month, up 1.2 percentage points from a year earlier](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882). For [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com) readers working in Korea or weighing a job there, the release shows which industries and occupations sit in each pay band and where the new jobs are, and the [2027 minimum wage decision](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111) shows where the legal floor sits against those bands.

## How Many Korean Workers Earn 3 Million Won (About $2,260) or More?

The survey counted [22.373 million wage workers as of April this year](https://m.news.nate.com/view/20261027n22984) (translated). Above the line, [workers earning between 3 million won and 4 million won accounted for 22.8 percent of the total, while those earning between 4 million won and 5 million won made up 11.5 percent](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882), with the rest in the 5 million won band, and the three bands start at about $2,260, $3,020 and $3,770 a month.

Each of those bands gained ground on the year. The [3 million to 4 million won band rose 0.4 percentage points and the 4 million to 5 million won band rose 0.3 percentage points](https://biz.heraldcorp.com/article/10916307) (translated), while the top band rose the most.

The single largest group still sits just below the line. Workers earning [2 million to under 3 million won made up 29.0%](https://m.news.nate.com/view/20261027n22984) (translated) of all wage workers, a band that starts at about $1,510, so the most common band is the one directly beneath the 3 million won mark. That band [fell 1.6 percentage points](https://biz.newdaily.co.kr/site/data/html/2026/10/27/2026102700204.html) (translated), and [the 1 million to 2 million won band fell 0.6 points](https://biz.newdaily.co.kr/site/data/html/2026/10/27/2026102700204.html) (about $755 to $1,510) (translated), while [every other band rose](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

## Is the 5 Million Won (About $3,770) Share Really a Record?

Yes, for the first-half series. The share earning 5 million won (about $3,770) or more was [the highest first-half share since the data series began in 2013](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882). The top band covered [3,931 thousand workers in the first half of 2026, against 3,661 thousand a year earlier](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), a rise of [270 thousand people](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

The comparison is April to April. The survey runs [twice a year, in April for the first half and October for the second half](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), and the record claim covers the first-half readings. The overall wage worker count edged down at the same time, by [43 thousand](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), so the top band grew while the pool shrank.

It was [the first first-half fall in wage workers in the Regional Employment Survey since 2020, early in the pandemic](https://m.news.nate.com/view/20261027n22984) (translated), when the count [dropped by 382 thousand](https://m.news.nate.com/view/20261027n22984) (translated).

> The figures reflect average monthly earnings from workers’ main jobs over the preceding three months, including bonuses and payments in kind, according to [the Aju Press English report](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882).

## What Counts as Monthly Pay in This Survey?

The pay figure is broad. The statistics office's own definition adds that the amount is counted [before tax](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated). That matters for anyone comparing an offer letter to these bands, because a base salary on its own is not the same figure as base pay with a bonus folded in.

Bonus payments [centred on the semiconductor industry in the first half are estimated to have pushed up the share of high earners](https://biz.heraldcorp.com/article/10916307) (translated). Rising pay and prices are part of the story as well, with [wage and price increases and the bonus effect behind the record top-band share](https://m.news.nate.com/view/20261027n22984) (translated).

The sample is large. The survey covers [about 232 thousand sample households nationwide, and household members aged 15 or over who live in them](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), with a [reference week of April 12 to 18, 2026, and interviews from April 21 to May 6](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated). It is designed to give [county and district level employment figures for regional job policy, along with detailed data on industries and occupations](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

## Which Industries Pay 5 Million Won (About $3,770) or More Most Often?

Three sectors stand out. The share earning 5 million won (about $3,770) or more was [highest in finance and insurance at 40.5 percent, followed by professional, scientific and technical services at 37.5 percent and information and communications at 35.8 percent](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882).

Manufacturing, the sector behind [why a semiconductor job is the hottest status symbol in South Korea](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/semiconductor-job-hottest-status-symbol-south-korea-2026), gained ground too. Its top-band share [rose to 25.4 percent from 22.9 percent a year earlier](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882), a [2.5 percentage point increase](https://biz.heraldcorp.com/article/10916307) (translated). Construction reached [20.4% in the top band, up 1.5 points](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

At the other end, [health and social welfare services had just 5.8 percent earning at least 5 million won](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882). Accommodation and food services had [only 1.6% in the top band, with 24.3% earning under 1 million won](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (about $755) (translated). Business facilities management, support and rental services had the highest share in the [2 million to 3 million won band, at 45.7%](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (about $1,510 to $2,260) (translated).

## Which Jobs Pay the Most, and Which Pay the Least?

Occupation splits the bands sharply as well. Among managers, [82.0% earned 5 million won (about $3,770) or more](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated). The top-band share was [30.1% for professionals and related workers and 22.5% for clerical workers](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

Skilled trades cluster in the middle. The [3 million to 4 million won band](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (about $2,260 to $3,020) was most common among [craft and related trades workers at 34.8% and machine operators and assemblers at 34.5%](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), which puts a large share of factory and trade workers at or just above the 3 million won line.

The lowest band is concentrated in two groups. Workers earning under 1 million won (about $755) made up [33.1% of elementary workers and 21.7% of service workers](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated). Among elementary workers, only [0.5% reached the 5 million won band](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

## Who Is in the Under 1 Million Won (About $755) Band?

The bottom did not shrink. The share earning under 1 million won (about $755) [rose from 9.6% in the first half of last year to 9.8% this year, about one in ten workers](https://m.news.nate.com/view/20261027n22984) (translated). The band from 1 million to 2 million won (about $755 to $1,510) held [9.3% of wage workers](https://biz.newdaily.co.kr/site/data/html/2026/10/27/2026102700204.html) (translated).

The low band is heavy in care. In health and social welfare services, [29.1% of wage workers earned under 1 million won](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), the highest share of any industry in the table.

> The figures highlight a divide between industries where higher pay is concentrated and those generating the most new jobs, according to [the Aju Press English report](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882).

## Where Are South Korea's New Jobs Being Created?

Total employment, which includes the self-employed as well as wage workers, was [28,961 thousand in the first half, up 74 thousand on the year](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), so overall jobs grew even as the wage worker count slipped. [Job growth was concentrated in health and social welfare, on wider care and medical demand as the population ages](https://biz.heraldcorp.com/article/10916307) (translated). Employment at nonresidential welfare facilities, including community welfare and home care services, [increased by 155,000 from a year earlier to 1.84 million](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882), and their share of total employment [reached 6.4 percent for the first time](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882). Hospitals [added 64,000 workers and clinics 26,000 as population aging continued to drive demand for health and welfare services](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882), and real estate related services [grew by 29,000](https://biz.heraldcorp.com/article/10916307) (translated).

By occupation, the largest gain was among [care workers and caregivers, followed by planning and marketing clerks](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), while [crop growers and store sales workers](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated) posted the largest occupational declines.

The broader job groups tell the same story. [Care and health service jobs grew by 81 thousand and health professionals by 73 thousand, while skilled farm jobs fell by 84 thousand and store sales and rental jobs by 64 thousand](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated). The two largest groups were [cooking and food service jobs at 1.78 million (6.1%) and cleaning and building management labor at 1.542 million (5.3%)](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

Losses by industry sat in farming, engineering services and retail. Employment [in crop farming fell by 82,000, while architectural and engineering services lost 62,000 workers and general retail employment declined by 31,000](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882).

The split by sex shows where the new roles went. Among men, [information and communications professionals and technicians grew by 46 thousand, while engineering professionals and technicians fell by 38 thousand](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated). Among women, [care and health service jobs grew by 72 thousand, while store sales and rental jobs fell by 54 thousand](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

Education draws a similar line. University graduates [gained 80 thousand jobs as health professionals and lost 25 thousand as engineering professionals and technicians](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated), while high school graduates [gained 31 thousand in care and health service jobs and lost 59 thousand in store sales and rental jobs](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

## Which Age Groups Gained Jobs, and Where?

For workers aged 15 to 29, employment [increased by 9,000 each at hospitals and higher education institutions, while general retail jobs fell by 18,000](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882). By occupation, young workers [gained 10 thousand jobs as secretaries and office support workers and lost 36 thousand as store sales workers](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated).

The middle years show the same tilt toward health. For those aged 30 to 49, [hospital employment rose by 38,000, while architectural engineering and related technical services fell by 34,000](https://biz.heraldcorp.com/article/10916307) (translated).

Older workers are filling care roles. For workers aged 50 and older, [nonresidential welfare facilities posted the largest increase, adding 141,000 jobs from a year earlier](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882), and by occupation the group's largest gain was [43 thousand more care workers and caregivers](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (translated). In the same sector, which has had a mostly female workforce, [male employment also rose by 66,000](https://biz.heraldcorp.com/article/10916307) (translated).

## How Do These Pay Bands Compare With Korea's Minimum Wage?

In July, the [Minimum Wage Commission](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111) set next year's rate at [10,700 won (about $8.08) an hour, up 380 won (about $0.29), or 3.7 percent, from this year's 10,320 won](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111) (about $7.79). Converted at 209 hours a month, the 2027 minimum [comes to 2,236,300 won](https://www.newsis.com/view/NISX20260715_0003709454) (about $1,690) (translated), and the new rate takes [effect on Jan. 1, 2027](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111).

The rate came out of a vote. Labor representatives [initially demanded a minimum wage of 12,000 won](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111) (about $9.06) [an hour, a 16.3 percent increase](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111), while [business representatives called for the rate to remain frozen](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111). During the commission's 13th meeting, [two business representatives from the Korea Federation of Micro Enterprise left the meeting, saying they could not accept an increase of more than 2 percent](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111). Public interest representatives then [proposed a mediation range between 10,600 won, a 2.7 percent increase, and 10,860 won, a 5.25 percent increase](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111) (about $8.00 and $8.20). In the final round, [labor insisted on 10,730 won (about $8.10) while business held to 10,700 won, sending the issue to a vote](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111), and the vote [passed the employer members' proposal of 10,700 won](https://www.newsis.com/view/NISX20260715_0003709454) (translated).

The decision [left both labor and business groups dissatisfied](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111). Labor groups argue the new minimum [falls well short of the 2.82 million won they estimate as the monthly cost of living](https://koreajoongangdaily.com/business/hourly-minimum-wage-set-at-10700-won-for-2027/12774111) (about $2,130). Ryu Ki-seop, secretary general of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, called the rise [a very disappointing decision that does not fully reflect the desperate living reality of low-wage workers, and close to a freeze given recent prices and living costs](https://www.newsis.com/view/NISX20260715_0003709454) (translated). The [Korea Enterprises Federation held that the rate should have been frozen given the difficult business reality of small and mid-sized firms and small business owners and their ability to pay](https://www.newsis.com/view/NISX20260715_0003709454) (translated).

The [Korea Federation of Micro Enterprise expressed deep regret, calling the decision a failure to heed the urgent appeals of 7.9 million small business owners](https://www.newsis.com/view/NISX20260715_0003709454) (translated). At that monthly rate, a full-time minimum wage job in 2027 falls inside the [2 million to 3 million won band](https://mods.go.kr/boardDownload.es?bid=211&list_no=447616&seq=1) (about $1,510 to $2,260) (translated).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

Beyond the headline, the useful reading is the map underneath. Pay at the top is concentrated in finance, professional and technical services, ICT and manufacturing, while employment gains are concentrated in care, health and welfare, where top-band shares are among the lowest. Pay band is only part of an offer, so check whether a role is [permanent or on a fixed-term contract](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/south-korea-direct-employment-107000-fixed-term-67000) as well.

- **Compare offers on the survey's basis.** Work out your average monthly pay including bonus and in-kind pay before you place an offer against the [3 million and 5 million won bands](https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261027133858882) (about $2,260 and $3,770).
