Since at least August. That earlier message called for "SpaceX experts and aces" to work for the [next three months](https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-offers-employees-extra-pay-build-memphis-data-centers-move-2026-10) on the data center buildout.

The program is intended to end on [December 31, 2026](https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-offers-employees-extra-pay-build-memphis-data-centers-move-2026-10), but it could be extended.

## Why Does SpaceX Need More Hands at Colossus Right Now?

Because SpaceX is expanding Colossus 1 and 2 [to meet surging demand for its compute business](https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-offers-employees-extra-pay-build-memphis-data-centers-move-2026-10). AI, which SpaceX now calls Super Intelligence, has emerged as [its largest business](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/20/spacex-spcx-earnings-live-updates-q3-2026html.html). The target ahead is larger still. On the same call, Musk said SpaceX aims to ["deploy power, cooling infrastructure at a rate that is vastly faster than anyone else."](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/20/spacex-spcx-earnings-live-updates-q3-2026html.html)

## Who Is Running the Memphis Buildout?

SpaceX has moved [senior rocket and satellite leaders](https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starship-veteran-kevin-holland-memphis-data-centers-vp-supercompute-2026-9) onto the project. An [early September memo](https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starship-veteran-kevin-holland-memphis-data-centers-vp-supercompute-2026-9) put Kevin Holland, a veteran of the launch business, in charge of building out SpaceX's AI compute infrastructure. Two other senior executives, Wesley Salandro and Alexandra Noe, from the [Falcon rocket and Starlink divisions](https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starship-veteran-kevin-holland-memphis-data-centers-vp-supercompute-2026-9), would report directly to Holland, the memo said. The Colossus sites were [originally built by xAI](https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/story/spacexs-ai-push-elon-musk-led-company-offers-20-pay-rise-if-employees-relocate-to-memphis-or-southaven-details-here-562978-2026-10-22) before it was folded into SpaceX in February.

## Has SpaceX Paid People to Move Before?

Yes, in Texas. Engineers at [SpaceX's Starbase company town in Texas](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/spacex-starbase-texas-engineers-relocation) have faced relocation pressure.

## What Does a Six-Week Assignment Mean for Your Taxes?

The tax rules decide how the travel costs SpaceX covers are treated. Under [the IRS guide to travel, gift and car expenses](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p463), if an assignment away from your main place of work is temporary, your tax home does not change, and you are treated as away from home for the whole period.

If SpaceX extends the program or offers a longer stay, ask HR in writing how it will treat travel and lodging costs.

State tax is the second check. Under [Mississippi Department of Revenue guidance](https://dor.ms.gov/general-information), you should file a Mississippi return if you are a nonresident or part-year resident with income taxed by Mississippi, or if Mississippi income tax is withheld from your wages. For tax year 2026, taxable income in excess of [$10,000 is taxed at 4%](https://dor.ms.gov/general-information).

If your six weeks are in Southaven, keep your pay stubs and ask payroll which state is withholding. A tax adviser can tell you whether a credit in your home state applies.

## Can Outsiders Get Into the Memphis Build Without Working at SpaceX?

Not through the surge, which is for current employees. But the company is hiring around the same sites. When we checked it in October, [SpaceXAI's jobs board](https://job-boards.greenhouse.io/xai) showed 293 jobs, and a long run of them carry a Southaven and Memphis location tag, from an architect to a chiller technician, construction managers and night-shift superintendents.

The board is not only construction management. The same [jobs board](https://job-boards.greenhouse.io/xai) listed a Combo Welder, a Construction Rigger, Controls Technicians, an Electrical Commissioning Technician, a Critical Facilities Technician, a Data Center Operations Technician and Driver (CDL) roles, including a night-shift driver, all tagged for Southaven and Memphis. Support jobs show up too, with a [Barista and a Cook](https://job-boards.greenhouse.io/xai) posted for Memphis.

The [three-bullet-point requirement](https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-hiring-trades-workers-ai-data-centers-bullet-points-2026-8) has become a hallmark of Musk's recruiting style, according to Business Insider, and he has previously asked candidates for white-collar roles at his companies for three bullet points on the ["toughest technical problems"](https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-hiring-trades-workers-ai-data-centers-bullet-points-2026-8) they have solved. SpaceXAI now operates [Colossus](https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-hiring-trades-workers-ai-data-centers-bullet-points-2026-8), the AI supercomputer campus in Memphis that trains the company's Grok AI models.

## What Is Happening Around the Memphis Build?

SpaceX also faces an [air pollution lawsuit in the Memphis area](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/20/spacex-spcx-earnings-live-updates-q3-2026html.html). The US Department of Justice lost its bid to have a federal court in Mississippi toss a [Clean Air Act lawsuit filed by the NAACP](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/20/spacex-spcx-earnings-live-updates-q3-2026html.html) against SpaceX over its Memphis-area operations. The data centers are powered by [methane gas-burning turbines](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/20/spacex-spcx-earnings-live-updates-q3-2026html.html) installed by the company's AI business. The Justice Department had accused the NAACP of threatening ["American national, economic, and energy security"](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/20/spacex-spcx-earnings-live-updates-q3-2026html.html) by asking the court to temporarily shut off the power supply used by SpaceX at its Colossus data centers.

Jobs were part of the announcement in Mississippi. When the Southaven data center was announced in January, the [Office of Governor Tate Reeves](https://governorreeves.ms.gov/tech-leader-xai-investing-more-than-20-billion-in-southaven/) put the corporate investment above $20 billion and said the project will create hundreds of permanent jobs throughout DeSoto County. The [Mississippi Development Authority also approved xAI](https://governorreeves.ms.gov/tech-leader-xai-investing-more-than-20-billion-in-southaven/) for its Data Center Incentive, which provides a sales and use tax exemption for all computing and equipment software used by companies certified as data centers by the agency.

Upon completion, the [Southaven data center](https://governorreeves.ms.gov/tech-leader-xai-investing-more-than-20-billion-in-southaven/) was set to increase the company's computing power to nearly 2 gigawatts, and Musk said at the time, ["we are building our third massive data center in the greater Memphis area."](https://governorreeves.ms.gov/tech-leader-xai-investing-more-than-20-billion-in-southaven/) The City of Southaven and DeSoto County are also supporting the projects [through fee-in-lieu agreements](https://governorreeves.ms.gov/tech-leader-xai-investing-more-than-20-billion-in-southaven/).

## What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

The surge shows where SpaceX is putting its people.
