# SpaceX Capex Jumps to 18.4 Billion Dollars in Its First Earnings Since the IPO

SpaceX reported Q2 revenue up 92% to 7.8 billion dollars and capex of 18.4 billion. What that spending pattern signals about where technical hiring is going.

SpaceX reported second quarter revenue of roughly 7.8 billion dollars, up about 92% year over year, alongside capital expenditure of approximately 18.4 billion dollars against about 2.8 billion a year earlier, [according to TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/04/spacex-doubles-revenues-on-anthropic-and-google-compute-deals-starlink-growth/). Roughly 15.8 billion of that spending went to its AI segment. For anyone reading this as a jobs story rather than a markets story, the capex line is the one that matters, because infrastructure at that scale cannot be built without a very large number of people. At [Metaintro](https://www.metaintro.com), we read corporate spending as a leading indicator of hiring, and this is one of the clearer signals of the year.

## Why Is Capital Expenditure a Better Hiring Signal Than Revenue?

Because revenue tells you what a company earned last quarter and capital expenditure tells you what it is committing to build over the next several years.

Capex is money spent on long lived physical assets, meaning facilities, equipment, computing infrastructure and the ground systems that support them. It is fundamentally different from operating expense in that it cannot easily be reversed. A company can cut marketing spend in a week. A company that has committed to a multi billion dollar build has entered contracts, ordered long lead equipment and started construction that would be extremely expensive to abandon.

That irreversibility is what makes it a reliable signal for workers. When a business raises capital spending by a factor of six in a year, it has made a judgment about demand that it is prepared to fund with money it cannot easily retrieve. Those commitments turn into design work, procurement, construction, commissioning and then years of operation, each of which requires staff.

The lag is the important detail. Capex announced now produces construction hiring over the following one to three years and operational hiring after that. Workers who track spending announcements are effectively reading a hiring forecast, which is considerably more useful than reading job boards that only show what is open today.

## What Does the AI Segment Spending Actually Buy?

Physical infrastructure, overwhelmingly, and that is the part with the largest employment footprint.

Spending directed at AI capability at this scale is mostly buildings, power, cooling and computing hardware rather than software. The economics of large scale computing are dominated by the cost of the facility and the energy to run it. That means a very large share of the money converts into construction and electrical work rather than into engineering salaries.

The sequence is consistent across projects. Site preparation and civil works come first, then structural construction, then the electrical distribution that consumes an enormous quantity of skilled labour, then mechanical and cooling systems, then controls and commissioning. Only after all of that does the facility require its comparatively small permanent operations team.

We have covered where this demand lands in detail, including [AI data centre skilled trades jobs and salaries](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/ai-data-center-skilled-trades-jobs-salary-careers-2026) and why [the AI build out needs electricians and welders more than it needs coders](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/ai-boom-needs-electricians-welders-not-coders-2026). The pattern also carries real timing risk, as we found in our reporting on [data centre spending leaving construction jobs in limbo](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/microsoft-120-billion-data-center-gamble-construction-jobs-limbo).

## Does Heavy Spending Guarantee Heavy Hiring?

No, and it is worth being careful about the distinction.

Capital intensive businesses are deliberately designed to generate revenue without proportional headcount. That is the entire point of investing in infrastructure rather than in people. A company can double its computing capacity without doubling its workforce, and in many cases the investment exists precisely to avoid adding staff.

There is also a distribution problem. Construction employment is temporary by nature and concentrated at specific sites. A worker two hundred miles from the build receives no benefit from it. Permanent operational roles are fewer and more specialised, and they frequently go to people already inside the industry rather than to those displaced from elsewhere.

The wider evidence on technology spending and employment has also been mixed. Technology companies cut roughly 140,000 jobs across 2026, more than a third of all announced US layoffs, [according to Financial Times analysis](https://www.ft.com/content/96a33881-27fd-42cf-8cff-4cbc87fc835f), even while committing record sums to infrastructure. High spending and reduced headcount are entirely compatible, and in this sector they have been running together.

The honest reading is that this spending creates a lot of work without necessarily creating a lot of permanent jobs, and that the work it creates is concentrated in trades and construction rather than in the technology roles most people imagine when they hear the word AI.

## Which Roles Benefit Most From Spending Like This?

The pattern is consistent enough across large infrastructure programmes to plan around.

Skilled trades benefit first and most. Electricians in particular, because the power distribution requirements of large computing facilities are enormous and cannot be simplified. Pipefitters, HVAC specialists, controls technicians, riggers and heavy equipment operators follow closely. These roles are well paid, resistant to automation and currently in short supply, and our guide to [fifteen skilled trades paying six figures without a degree](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/15-skilled-trades-six-figures-2026-no-degree) covers where the demand sits.

Engineering benefits in specific disciplines rather than broadly. Power systems, thermal, structural and controls engineering all see direct demand. Relocation is often part of the bargain, as we found in our reporting on [engineers relocating to Starbase in Texas](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/spacex-starbase-texas-engineers-relocation). Aerospace and systems engineering roles remain in demand at this particular company, and we covered the compensation picture in our guide to [aerospace engineer salaries](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/aerospace-engineer-salary) and separately looked at [what its job listings signalled about a major AI build](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/spacex-job-listings-point-to-major-ai-build).

Operations and facilities roles come last but last longest. Once built, these facilities require technicians, network operations staff, security and maintenance crews for the life of the asset, which is measured in decades rather than years.

Supporting functions benefit indirectly and unevenly. Procurement, contract management, safety and compliance all expand with a programme of this size, and these roles are frequently overlooked by jobseekers who assume the only way into a technology company is through engineering. Large capital programmes are enormously document heavy, and the people who manage supplier contracts, equipment schedules, permits and safety records are genuinely load bearing. These positions also tend to be more accessible to career changers than engineering ones, because the underlying skills are organisational rather than technical.

It is worth noting which roles do not benefit much. General corporate functions, marketing, sales and most software engineering see little direct lift from infrastructure spending, because the money is committed to physical assets rather than to product development. Workers in those functions who read a large capex number as a signal of broad hiring are likely to be disappointed, and should look instead at whether their own segment is growing or being funded by the parts that are. The distinction between a company spending heavily and a company hiring broadly is one of the most commonly missed points in coverage of results like these.

## What Does a Sixfold Capex Increase Signal About Timing?

It signals urgency, and urgency changes the character of the hiring that follows.

A company that raises capital spending gradually is building to a plan with slack in it. A company that raises it sixfold in a single year is racing something, whether that is a competitor, a contractual commitment or a window it believes is closing. Programmes run at that pace behave differently on the ground. Schedules compress, overtime becomes standard, contractors are hired at premium rates and the tolerance for delay drops sharply.

For workers, this has both an upside and a cost. The upside is money. Compressed schedules mean sustained overtime, shift premiums and strong bargaining power for anyone holding a scarce certification, because replacing you takes time the project does not have. Workers in the right trade at the right moment in a rushed programme can earn substantially more than the same work pays in a normal cycle.

The cost is that rushed programmes are harder on people and less stable. Long hours over extended periods carry real physical and personal consequences, and rushed sites have historically been more dangerous ones. There is also a whiplash risk. Spending that ramps this fast can slow just as fast if the underlying assumption changes, and crews hired for a sprint are released at the end of it rather than moved to the next phase.

The sensible posture is to take the work and the pay while treating the earnings as temporary. Workers who adjust their fixed costs to match boom period income lose the ability to wait for a good next contract, which is the thing that actually protects you across a cycle.

## What Should Workers Actually Do With This Information?

Use it to decide where to point your training rather than to chase a single employer.

Follow the capital, not the brand. The specific company matters far less than the category of work being funded. When a sector commits tens of billions to physical infrastructure, the demand shows up across dozens of contractors, subcontractors and equipment suppliers, most of which are hiring more accessibly than the headline name. Recent analysis found [businesses with fewer than 1,000 employees made 92% of hires in May](https://www.fastcompany.com/91582007/businesses-with-less-than-1000-employees-made-92-of-may-hires), which is exactly where this work is subcontracted.

Get the certification that unlocks the site. Large infrastructure projects have specific safety, electrical and equipment certification requirements, and holding them is frequently the difference between being considered and not. These are inexpensive relative to what they unlock and can usually be completed in weeks.

Be willing to relocate temporarily. Infrastructure work is geographically concentrated and the premium for going where the build is can be substantial. Workers who treat a two year posting as a financial opportunity rather than a disruption often come out considerably ahead, provided they treat the elevated earnings as temporary rather than permanent.

Finally, if you are in a technology role rather than a trades role, note where the money is actually going. Capital is flowing to infrastructure and to the specialised skills that design and run it, not evenly across software employment. Our reporting on [AI skills appearing in a growing share of technical job postings](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/ai-skills-73-percent-tech-job-postings-2026) and on [the salary premium attached to those skills](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/ai-skills-salary-premium-prompt-engineering-mlops) shows where the differentiation now sits.

## How Should You Read a Company's Financial Results for Career Signals?

There are four lines worth finding, and none of them is the headline profit number.

Capital expenditure tells you what the company is committing to build, which becomes hiring in one to three years. A sharp increase is the strongest forward signal available in a public filing.

Headcount, where disclosed, tells you what actually happened rather than what was announced. Companies frequently describe growth while quietly reducing staff, and the number in the filing is harder to spin than the language in the press release.

Segment breakdowns tell you which parts of the business are growing and which are being funded by the others. A segment growing quickly while running an operating loss is being deliberately invested in, which usually means hiring. A segment quietly shrinking is where cuts will land regardless of overall company performance.

Cash position tells you how long the strategy can survive being wrong. A company with substantial cash can sustain an unprofitable expansion for years. A company without it will correct quickly, and the correction falls on staff.

Reading these four things takes about ten minutes per company and gives you a far better view of your own position than any amount of internal reassurance. ## People Also Asked

### Q: Does high capital spending mean a company is hiring?

A: It usually means construction and contractor hiring over the following one to three years, followed by a smaller permanent operations team. It does not reliably mean growth in corporate or software headcount, since infrastructure investment is often intended to increase output without proportionally increasing staff.

### Q: What is the difference between capex and operating expense?

A: Capital expenditure buys long lived assets such as buildings, equipment and infrastructure, and is difficult to reverse once committed. Operating expense covers ongoing running costs including salaries, and can be cut quickly. That is why capex is the more reliable forward signal.

### Q: Which jobs benefit most from AI infrastructure spending?

A: Skilled trades benefit first and most, particularly electricians, followed by pipefitters, HVAC and controls technicians. Specialised engineering disciplines including power systems and thermal engineering also see direct demand, with a smaller permanent operations workforce afterwards.
