## UCLA Extension Cuts 23 Jobs

UCLA Extension has confirmed the layoff of **23 employees in June**, citing anticipated federal budget cuts that never materialized. The layoffs hit the **enrollment marketing and learning design teams** the hardest, with staff given **just 60 days' notice** before their contracts ended in August.

While the University of California system braced for financial turbulence, California’s **final 2025–26 budget ultimately preserved UC funding levels**. That reality is now raising eyebrows across campus—were the layoffs premature, or part of a broader strategy masked as budget discipline?

## Marketing Team Gutted, Design Shrunk

Among the hardest hit was the marketing team responsible for program promotion—from flyers and brochures to YouTube ads and email campaigns. One laid-off employee, who’d spent a decade at UCLA Extension, questioned the move: **"Who's going to do the flyers? Who’s going to promote these courses?"**

The learning design department, which supports online course development, also lost key staffers. The timing couldn’t be worse, as remote learning continues to grow and digital instructional quality becomes more important than ever.

## History Repeats, But With Less Notice

This isn’t the first time UCLA Extension has slashed its workforce. Back in **2018**, the school laid off **25% of staff** following a $10 million drop in revenue. But then, employees received **six months of notice**—a stark contrast to the two-month runway offered this time around.

Dean Eric Bullard defended the decision, citing broader “financial challenges” across the UC system. But critics argue that the data doesn’t back that up—especially since **state funding levels remained stable**. What’s more, the restructuring included the elimination of academic director contracts, replaced with **11 new full-time portfolio director roles**, shifting the organizational structure rather than shrinking it outright.

## A Transparency Problem in Higher Ed?

The layoffs underscore a growing tension in higher education: institutions citing budget woes while **enrollment stabilizes** and **state support holds firm**. For faculty and staff, it's a trust issue. For the public, it’s a question of accountability.

UCLA Extension is known for serving adult learners and working professionals. Cutting the very teams that support student outreach and course quality feels misaligned with its mission—especially when no significant funding loss has yet occurred.
