## December Brings Bigger Checks for Veterans

Starting December 1, 2025, over 70 million Americans—including veterans, military retirees, and Social Security recipients—will see their monthly benefits increase by 2.8%. The [Social Security Administration](https://www.ssa.gov/) announced the Cost of Living Adjustment on October 24, slightly higher than 2025's 2.5% bump but far below the 8.7% spike seen in 2023.

The [Department of Veterans Affairs](https://www.va.gov/) and [Department of Defense](https://www.defense.gov/) apply the same COLA rate across disability compensation, military retirement pensions, and survivor benefits. For military retirees, this translates to $28 more for every $1,000 in monthly pension. A retiree collecting $3,000 monthly can expect roughly $84 additional each month, or about $1,008 annually.

Veterans with 100% disability ratings will see their checks increase by approximately $107.28 monthly for those without dependents, while those at 10% disability gain about $4.91 per month. The adjustment automatically applies—no paperwork required.

## Tax-Free Dollars Add Up

[VA disability compensation](https://www.va.gov/disability/) remains 100% tax-free, making the COLA bump more valuable than standard wage increases. For a veteran receiving $1,500 monthly in disability benefits, the 2.8% increase adds approximately $42 each month or $504 annually—all untaxed.

The COLA applies broadly across VA programs: Dependency and Indemnity Compensation for surviving spouses, clothing allowances, and Special Monthly Compensation all increase by the same rate. Military retirement pensions, while taxable, follow identical percentage adjustments.

Congress passed legislation in 2024 that permanently ties VA benefit increases to Social Security COLA rates, ensuring veterans don't fall behind civilian retirees. The move eliminated previous inconsistencies in how different federal benefits tracked inflation.

## When Economic Reality Bites Back

Here's where the good news gets complicated. While the 2.8% adjustment sounds reasonable, inflation hasn't been cooperating. Healthcare costs—a major concern for aging veterans—often climb faster than general inflation rates. Housing expenses in many markets continue rising beyond the Consumer Price Index calculations that determine COLA.

The [Consumer Price Index](https://www.bls.gov/cpi/) measures a broad basket of goods and services, but individual expenses don't inflate uniformly. Veterans living in high-cost areas or managing chronic conditions may find the adjustment barely keeps pace with their actual spending increases.

Recent historical context shows the volatility: COLA was 3.2% in 2024, jumped to 8.7% in 2023 during peak inflation, hit 5.9% in 2021, but stood at just 1.6% in 2020. The 2026 rate of 2.8% suggests stabilizing but persistent inflation pressure.

[Social Security](https://www.ssa.gov/) recipients will see their average monthly benefit increase by about $56, giving some perspective on the adjustment's real-world impact. For the nearly 71 million people receiving these benefits, every dollar matters—but whether it's enough remains debatable.

The [National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association](https://www.narfe.org/) noted that the 2026 COLA doesn't keep pace with federal health insurance premium increases exceeding 12% for the same period. This squeeze particularly affects fixed-income households.

Veterans receiving both VA disability and Social Security benefits will see increases in both payments, though the Social Security adjustment technically takes effect in January while VA COLA begins in December. First increased payments appear in checks dated December 31, 2025, or January 1, 2026, depending on the benefit type.

For those concerned about whether 2.8% adequately protects purchasing power, the honest answer is: it depends. Location, healthcare needs, housing costs, and individual circumstances all factor into whether this adjustment provides genuine relief or merely slows the erosion of buying power.
