## What Did Volvo Cars Announce on October 23?

The plan came with the results for the third quarter, which [Volvo Car AB submitted for publication on 23-10-2026 at 07:00 CET](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/). In response to the result, the company [aims to reduce an additional SEK 5 billion in indirect spend and variable costs](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/), on top of earlier cost programmes.

Those savings are what drive the job cuts. The reductions will come [by ending consultant contracts, through natural attrition and by targeted exit packages to employees](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/), and the company expects [indirect spend to be almost 25% lower by the end of 2027 than in 2024](https://www.cbtnews.com/volvo-cars-posts-q3-operating-loss/), with the [full financial effects of these measures realised by the end of 2027](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/).

The new round adds to cuts already made. ## Who Is Affected by the 2,500 Job Cuts?

White-collar roles in Sweden carry most of the cut. Of the 2,500 roles, [2,000 are in Sweden](https://qz.com/volvo-cars-job-cuts-third-quarter-loss-102326), and the Swedish cuts [concern white-collar employees, with the majority in Gothenburg](https://www.gp.se/ekonomi/2000-tjanster-forsvinner-i-sverige-volvo-cars-resultat-tokrasar.b9573e02-145c-5159-af76-c24fd356484b) (translated). Before the announcement, Volvo Cars had [19,500 employees in Sweden and just over 39,000 globally](https://www.smalanningen.se/nyheter/volvo-cars-bloder-2-500-tjanster-bort) (translated).

The headline number is not only employees. Chief financial officer Fredrik Hansson described the target as [a combination of purchased services, consultants and employees](https://www.smalanningen.se/nyheter/volvo-cars-bloder-2-500-tjanster-bort) (translated), and he [declined to go into the exact mix](https://www.smalanningen.se/nyheter/volvo-cars-bloder-2-500-tjanster-bort) (translated).

Unionen club chair Jörgen Olsson [expects the savings to hit Gothenburg hardest](https://www.nyteknik.se/karriaer/volvo-cars-kapar-2-500-tjaenster-mycket-utmanande-miljoe/4506691) (translated), but [a Lund office and some other sites could also be hit](https://www.nyteknik.se/karriaer/volvo-cars-kapar-2-500-tjaenster-mycket-utmanande-miljoe/4506691) (translated), and Olsson noted the company has already [moved the Stockholm office, which had 400 people](https://www.nyteknik.se/karriaer/volvo-cars-kapar-2-500-tjaenster-mycket-utmanande-miljoe/4506691) (translated). Outside Sweden, the remaining [500 cuts are global](https://www.firstpost.com/business/volvo-cars-shares-plunge-nearly-30-as-q3-loss-triggers-2500-job-cuts-14054850.html). Volvo Cars has not said which countries those roles sit in. In China, a separate cost step will [combine its two offices in Shanghai by moving the sales office to the local HQ in Jiading](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/).

## Are Volvo Factory Workers Part of the Cuts?

No, the job cut target is about office work. Production staff are not covered. Finance chief Fredrik Hansson said the factories have [flexibility in production to scale up and down continuously, but that is not what the 2,500 refers to](https://www.smalanningen.se/nyheter/volvo-cars-bloder-2-500-tjanster-bort) (translated).

That does not mean blue-collar jobs are untouched by the wider plan. Volvo Cars is [adapting its blue-collar workforce to current volumes by leveraging existing flexibility](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/).

The metalworkers' union is uneasy. Adrian Avdullahu, chair of the IF Metall club at Volvo Cars, said members [woke up to the news that day, but there had been worry, because people realise something is coming when a company issues a profit warning](https://www.nyteknik.se/karriaer/volvo-cars-kapar-2-500-tjaenster-mycket-utmanande-miljoe/4506691) (translated).

## How Will Volvo Make the Cuts, and When?

The company wants consultants and attrition to do most of the work. Volvo Cars hopes to [solve most of the roles through ended consultant contracts and natural retirements](https://www.arbetsvarlden.se/2-500-tjanster-i-fara-nar-volvo-cars-skar-ner/) (translated), while saying [targeted severance for employees may follow](https://www.arbetsvarlden.se/2-500-tjanster-i-fara-nar-volvo-cars-skar-ner/) (translated). Hansson framed it as [voluntary departures and being very restrictive with hiring](https://www.smalanningen.se/nyheter/volvo-cars-bloder-2-500-tjanster-bort) (translated).

On timing, chief executive Håkan Samuelsson expects the [cuts to be completed by mid-2027](https://www.centraloregondaily.com/news/consumer/volvo-cars-shares-slump-on-big-loss-2-500-more-jobs-to-go/article_6dfd1639-1b6d-5b6b-8090-f249cefd3d9f.html). Finance chief Fredrik Hansson said everything is meant to be [fully negotiated by summer 2027](https://www.smalanningen.se/nyheter/volvo-cars-bloder-2-500-tjanster-bort) (translated), and moving work out of Sweden to another part of the world [is not on the table](https://www.smalanningen.se/nyheter/volvo-cars-bloder-2-500-tjanster-bort) (translated).

More cuts are possible. At the press conference, Samuelsson left the door open, as [more measures in February cannot be ruled out if things do not work to plan](https://www.arbetsvarlden.se/2-500-tjanster-i-fara-nar-volvo-cars-skar-ner/) (translated).

## Why Did Volvo Cars Swing to a Loss, and How Hard Did the Shares Fall?

The underlying figure excluding joint ventures, associates and items affecting comparability was [SEK -3.7 bn, against SEK 5.8 bn in Q3 2025](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/). That [operating loss was far bigger than expected](https://www.centraloregondaily.com/news/consumer/volvo-cars-shares-slump-on-big-loss-2-500-more-jobs-to-go/article_6dfd1639-1b6d-5b6b-8090-f249cefd3d9f.html), and [Citi analysts said the consensus forecast was for a loss of 724 million crowns](https://www.centraloregondaily.com/news/consumer/volvo-cars-shares-slump-on-big-loss-2-500-more-jobs-to-go/article_6dfd1639-1b6d-5b6b-8090-f249cefd3d9f.html). Reported operating income, including those items, was [SEK -5.6 bn, against SEK 6.4 bn in Q3 2025](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/).

Revenue fell sharply. It dropped to [66.9 billion kronor from 86.4 billion kronor](https://qz.com/volvo-cars-job-cuts-third-quarter-loss-102326), and [revenue in China roughly halved from a year earlier](https://qz.com/volvo-cars-job-cuts-third-quarter-loss-102326) as [legacy premium brands faced hypercompetition from new Chinese alternatives](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/). In the US, the company saw [continued negative effects from tariffs and the removal of consumer incentives for electrified cars](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/).

Cash burn is the other pressure. Free cash flow was [negative 8.9 billion kronor, compared with negative 4.3 billion kronor](https://qz.com/volvo-cars-job-cuts-third-quarter-loss-102326) a year earlier, and Handelsbanken analyst Hampus Engellau said that [if that continues for another two quarters, they might need more capital](https://www.centraloregondaily.com/news/consumer/volvo-cars-shares-slump-on-big-loss-2-500-more-jobs-to-go/article_6dfd1639-1b6d-5b6b-8090-f249cefd3d9f.html), though he noted Volvo still had over 30 billion crowns in cash.

The stock [plunged 24% on Friday, taking the shares to another record low](https://www.centraloregondaily.com/news/consumer/volvo-cars-shares-slump-on-big-loss-2-500-more-jobs-to-go/article_6dfd1639-1b6d-5b6b-8090-f249cefd3d9f.html). It was [down more than 30% on Friday morning](https://www.gp.se/ekonomi/2000-tjanster-forsvinner-i-sverige-volvo-cars-resultat-tokrasar.b9573e02-145c-5159-af76-c24fd356484b) (translated).

The [EX60 electric SUV is central to Volvo's turnaround](https://www.centraloregondaily.com/news/consumer/volvo-cars-shares-slump-on-big-loss-2-500-more-jobs-to-go/article_6dfd1639-1b6d-5b6b-8090-f249cefd3d9f.html). It has [over 50,000 European orders](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/), but battery assembly issues mean [only around 5,000 units of the planned 40,000 for this year have been built so far](https://www.centraloregondaily.com/news/consumer/volvo-cars-shares-slump-on-big-loss-2-500-more-jobs-to-go/article_6dfd1639-1b6d-5b6b-8090-f249cefd3d9f.html).

## How Does This Round Compare With the 2025 Job Cuts?

The shape is familiar. In May 2025, Volvo Cars set out an [estimated reduction of around 3,000 positions, including consultants](https://mb.cision.com/Main/23602/4201074/3568394.pdf), the round behind its earlier [plan to cut 3,000 jobs](https://www.metaintro.com/blog/volvo-job-cuts-strategy). Those cuts were set to [primarily affect office-based positions in Sweden](https://mb.cision.com/Main/23602/4201074/3568394.pdf).

The 2025 split was spelled out in more detail. That round covered [around 1,000 positions filled by consultants, most in Sweden, and 1,200 employees in Sweden](https://mb.cision.com/Main/23602/4201074/3568394.pdf), with the rest in other markets, and the company said it [would issue a notice for these office-based positions to the Swedish labour market authorities](https://mb.cision.com/Main/23602/4201074/3568394.pdf) that day.

The Swedish count matches last time. In 2025, [about 2,000 of those cuts were in the Swedish operations](https://www.nyteknik.se/karriaer/volvo-cars-kapar-2-500-tjaenster-mycket-utmanande-miljoe/4506691) (translated), the same Swedish figure as this round.

## What Are Unions at Volvo Cars Saying?

The unions are frustrated, and the graduates' association is about to enter negotiations. Unionen's Jörgen Olsson said he was [hugely disappointed with the financial result](https://kollega.se/varsel/volvo-skar-ned-med-2-500-tjanster-enbart-tjansteman) (translated), and described it as [enormously heavy and frustrating to end up in this situation again](https://www.arbetsvarlden.se/2-500-tjanster-i-fara-nar-volvo-cars-skar-ner/) (translated).

His focus is on how people leave. Olsson said the intention is that [people should not be forced out without offers](https://kollega.se/varsel/volvo-skar-ned-med-2-500-tjanster-enbart-tjansteman) (translated), and he said the company has [a process in place for exit offers](https://kollega.se/varsel/volvo-skar-ned-med-2-500-tjanster-enbart-tjansteman) (translated).

Graduates have their own body. The [Akademikerföreningen at Volvo Cars has a membership of 3,600, most of them in the engineers' union Sveriges Ingenjörer](https://www.nyteknik.se/karriaer/volvo-cars-kapar-2-500-tjaenster-mycket-utmanande-miljoe/4506691) (translated). Under chair Kristina Tullgren, the group will [now enter negotiations with the company, focused on protecting members' interests](https://www.nyteknik.se/karriaer/volvo-cars-kapar-2-500-tjaenster-mycket-utmanande-miljoe/4506691) (translated), and Tullgren said members face [yet another period of uncertainty after several years of recurring cutbacks, reorganisations and savings programmes](https://www.arbetsvarlden.se/2-500-tjanster-i-fara-nar-volvo-cars-skar-ner/) (translated).

## What Notice and Support Do Swedish Employees Get?

Sweden's [Employment Protection Act, Lagen om anställningsskydd (LAS)](https://oresunddirekt.dk/en/working-in-sweden/when-you-stop-working/termination-of-employment-in-sweden/), sets the floor, and a contract [may give you more favourable conditions than those provided by LAS, but never less favourable conditions](https://oresunddirekt.dk/en/working-in-sweden/when-you-stop-working/termination-of-employment-in-sweden/). A termination [must always be in writing and based on objective grounds](https://oresunddirekt.dk/en/working-in-sweden/when-you-stop-working/termination-of-employment-in-sweden/).

Notice depends on how long you have worked there:

- [2 to 4 years: 2 months](https://oresunddirekt.dk/en/working-in-sweden/when-you-stop-working/termination-of-employment-in-sweden/).

During notice you keep working [and will receive your normal salary](https://oresunddirekt.dk/en/working-in-sweden/when-you-stop-working/termination-of-employment-in-sweden/), and if the employer cannot provide work you are [still entitled to full pay](https://oresunddirekt.dk/en/working-in-sweden/when-you-stop-working/termination-of-employment-in-sweden/).

Selection generally follows seniority. When staff are dismissed due to a shortage of work, [employees with the shortest length of service are usually dismissed first](https://oresunddirekt.dk/en/working-in-sweden/when-you-stop-working/termination-of-employment-in-sweden/), though the employer [may exempt up to three employees from the seniority rules](https://oresunddirekt.dk/en/working-in-sweden/when-you-stop-working/termination-of-employment-in-sweden/), such as staff with [skills or expertise that are particularly important to the business](https://oresunddirekt.dk/en/working-in-sweden/when-you-stop-working/termination-of-employment-in-sweden/).

## What Else Is Changing at Volvo Cars Plants and Offices?

The plant setup is changing too. Volvo Cars will [concentrate on five dedicated Volvo plants globally](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/). For its [Chengdu and Ghent plants, the company is exploring the option of multi-brand assembly together with Geely](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/).

The US gets more local work. Volvo Cars will [localise XC60 production in Charleston in Q1 2027](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/), and [by the end of the decade, it will localise a second, all-new car](https://www.volvocars.com/intl/media/press-releases/4291EEEC7003CDC6/) in the US.

Leadership is also changing.
