VisionPower Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, known as [VSMC](https://www.vsmc.com/career), opened its first 12-inch wafer fab in Tampines on [28 September 2026](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore), and the plant is expected to [create around 1,600 jobs](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore) at full capacity by 2029. About [75% of those roles](https://www.mti.gov.sg/newsroom/remarks-by-minister-for-trade-and-industry--energy-and-industry--dr-tan-see-leng-at-vsmc-grand-opening-ceremony/) are expected to be professional, managerial, executive and technician jobs. ## What Opened in Tampines on 28 September?

The plant is a [300mm wafer fab](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore) belonging to a joint venture between [Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1413447/000141344724000066/visandnxptoestablishajoint.htm), or VIS, and [NXP Semiconductors](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1413447/000141344724000066/visandnxptoestablishajoint.htm). A wafer is a [thin, circular slice of semiconductor material that forms the base of a chip](https://mustsharenews.com/tampines-wafer-fab-1600-jobs/), and a [wafer fab is short for a wafer fabrication facility](https://mustsharenews.com/tampines-wafer-fab-1600-jobs/).

The opening came [with construction now complete](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore). The fab has [entered the risk production stage, with volume production scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore). After [22 months of construction](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore), the fab processed its first sample lot with yields above 99%.

The fab targets [specialty semiconductors rather than the leading-edge logic that runs AI](https://technode.global/2026/09/28/taiwan-dutch-venture-vsmc-opens-7-8-billion-specialty-chip-fab-in-singapore/). It will support [process technologies ranging from 130nm to 40nm for mixed-signal, power management, analog, and interposer applications](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore), serving high-performance computing, mobile, automotive, industrial and consumer markets. ## How Many Jobs Are Expected, and by When?

At full capacity by 2029, the fab is expected to [produce approximately 44,000 12-inch wafers per month, create around 1,600 jobs](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore), and strengthen Singapore's semiconductor ecosystem.

The [Manufacturing Engineer posting](https://vsmc.applyourjobs.com/jobdetails.aspx?ID=6cRDB3qk%2BrjpTcpMn9gMuw%3D%3D), [Process Integration Associate Engineer posting](https://vsmc.applyourjobs.com/jobdetails.aspx?ID=J963yeFdmtF4146avLZFYA%3D%3D) and [Facilities Associate Engineer posting](https://vsmc.applyourjobs.com/jobdetails.aspx?ID=LmvYsWPaqjOyTRr%2FVf9uLw%3D%3D) each state that hiring will be conducted in phases.

The split by job level was [given by the trade minister at the opening](https://www.mti.gov.sg/newsroom/remarks-by-minister-for-trade-and-industry--energy-and-industry--dr-tan-see-leng-at-vsmc-grand-opening-ceremony/). VSMC is [expected to create 1,600 new jobs](https://www.mti.gov.sg/newsroom/remarks-by-minister-for-trade-and-industry--energy-and-industry--dr-tan-see-leng-at-vsmc-grand-opening-ceremony/), and [75% will be professional, managerial, executive and technician roles](https://www.mti.gov.sg/newsroom/remarks-by-minister-for-trade-and-industry--energy-and-industry--dr-tan-see-leng-at-vsmc-grand-opening-ceremony/).

## How Has the Plan Changed Since It Was First Announced?

Two numbers have changed since the [original announcement](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1413447/000141344724000066/visandnxptoestablishajoint.htm). In June 2024, the joint venture was set to [create approximately 1,500 jobs in Singapore](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1413447/000141344724000066/visandnxptoestablishajoint.htm), with an expected output of 55,000 300mm wafers per month in 2029. The jobs figure now stands at [around 1,600](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore), while the wafer figure for full capacity by 2029 is approximately 44,000 a month. NXP's planned manufacturing capacity at VSMC [remains unchanged](https://www.edb.gov.sg/en/news-and-insights/vsmc-celebrates-the-grand-opening-of-its-first-300mm-fab-in-singapore), in the words of NXP chief executive Rafael Sotomayor.

The initial buildout is [budgeted at about $7.8 billion](https://technode.global/2026/09/28/taiwan-dutch-venture-vsmc-opens-7-8-billion-specialty-chip-fab-in-singapore/), the same figure as in the [2024 announcement](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1413447/000141344724000066/visandnxptoestablishajoint.htm). The total cost of the initial build out was [anticipated to be $7.8 billion](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1413447/000141344724000066/visandnxptoestablishajoint.htm) in the 2024 announcement, with VIS injecting $2.4 billion for a 60 percent stake and NXP injecting $1.6 billion for 40 percent. VIS and NXP also agreed to [contribute an additional $1.9 billion](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1413447/000141344724000066/visandnxptoestablishajoint.htm) for long-term capacity infrastructure, with the remaining funding, including loans, from third parties. At the [December 2024 groundbreaking](https://www.vsmc.com/newsroom/groundbreaking-ceremony), the investment was put at approximately USD 7.8 billion.

[VIS operates the plant](https://technode.global/2026/09/28/taiwan-dutch-venture-vsmc-opens-7-8-billion-specialty-chip-fab-in-singapore/). Its process technologies were [planned to be licensed and transferred to the joint venture from TSMC](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1413447/000141344724000066/visandnxptoestablishajoint.htm) in the original plan. NXP [receives dedicated capacity for its automotive and industrial chips](https://technode.global/2026/09/28/taiwan-dutch-venture-vsmc-opens-7-8-billion-specialty-chip-fab-in-singapore/) from the venture. Under that original plan, a second phase would be [considered and developed upon the successful ramp of the initial phase](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1413447/000141344724000066/visandnxptoestablishajoint.htm), pending commitments by both partners.

## Which Roles Are Named in the 75% PMET Share?

The roles named at the opening [are technical](https://www.mti.gov.sg/newsroom/remarks-by-minister-for-trade-and-industry--energy-and-industry--dr-tan-see-leng-at-vsmc-grand-opening-ceremony/). They include [engineers, chemists and data scientists](https://www.mti.gov.sg/newsroom/remarks-by-minister-for-trade-and-industry--energy-and-industry--dr-tan-see-leng-at-vsmc-grand-opening-ceremony/) who will operate advanced manufacturing equipment, develop and fabricate wafers, and optimise manufacturing processes with automation. When construction began, VSMC planned an [Automated Material Handling System, AI-enabled quality management](https://www.vsmc.com/newsroom/introduction-to-vsmc) and energy-efficient manufacturing processes.

The [Facilities Associate Engineer (Mechanical)](https://vsmc.applyourjobs.com/jobdetails.aspx?ID=LmvYsWPaqjOyTRr%2FVf9uLw%3D%3D) supports daily operation and maintenance of the clean room, chiller, exhaust and PCW systems. It asks for operation experience in mechanical, clean room and PCW systems, good English and Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project skills, and a proactive attitude and sense of responsibility, and the role coordinates with a [schedule of four shifts and two rounds](https://vsmc.applyourjobs.com/jobdetails.aspx?ID=LmvYsWPaqjOyTRr%2FVf9uLw%3D%3D).

## Can Fresh Graduates Get In Through GRIT or a University Partnership?

VSMC is linked to two graduate routes. The first is a government traineeship scheme, and VSMC is taking part in [SWDA's career conversion programmes and the Ministry of Manpower's graduate industry traineeships](https://www.mti.gov.sg/newsroom/remarks-by-minister-for-trade-and-industry--energy-and-industry--dr-tan-see-leng-at-vsmc-grand-opening-ceremony/), known as GRIT. VSMC plans to [scale up its GRIT intake for engineering roles to 15 hires](https://www.mti.gov.sg/newsroom/remarks-by-minister-for-trade-and-industry--energy-and-industry--dr-tan-see-leng-at-vsmc-grand-opening-ceremony/), in partnership with SWDA.

The GRIT rules are set out on [the SWDA programme page](https://www.wsg.gov.sg/home/individuals/attachment-placement-programmes/graduate-industry-traineeships). Traineeships last [3 to 6 months](https://www.wsg.gov.sg/home/individuals/attachment-placement-programmes/graduate-industry-traineeships), and trainees receive an allowance co-funded by the government and the host organisation. To qualify, you must meet these criteria:

- **Residency.** Be a [Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident](https://www.wsg.gov.sg/home/individuals/attachment-placement-programmes/graduate-industry-traineeships).
- **Graduation year.** Have [graduated in 2024, 2025 or 2026](https://www.wsg.gov.sg/home/individuals/attachment-placement-programmes/graduate-industry-traineeships) from a university, polytechnic, ITE or other institution, or graduated earlier and completed National Service in one of those years.
- **Experience.** Have [no prior working experience](https://www.wsg.gov.sg/home/individuals/attachment-placement-programmes/graduate-industry-traineeships) and be prepared to commit to a full-time traineeship.

Students finishing in 2026 who only receive their award in 2027 are [also eligible](https://www.wsg.gov.sg/home/individuals/attachment-placement-programmes/graduate-industry-traineeships).

The second route runs through campuses. On [18 September 2026](https://www.vsmc.com/newsroom/ihl-partnership-day), VSMC signed memoranda of understanding with [Nanyang Technological University](https://www.ntu.edu.sg/), [Singapore Institute of Technology](https://www.singaporetech.edu.sg/), [Singapore University of Technology and Design](https://www.sutd.edu.sg/), [Ngee Ann Polytechnic](https://www.np.edu.sg/), [Republic Polytechnic (RP)](https://www.rp.edu.sg/), [Singapore Polytechnic (SP)](https://www.sp.edu.sg/) and [Temasek Polytechnic (TP)](https://www.tp.edu.sg/).
