Amazon Axes 110 Wondery Jobs
Amazon cuts 110 jobs at Wondery podcast division, merges teams with Audible as it restructures audio business to compete with YouTube.

Amazon Chops 110 Podcast Jobs in Audio Shake-Up
Amazon is making another round of cuts—this time in its audio business. The tech giant is laying off 110 employees at Wondery, the podcast studio it acquired in 2020, as part of a sweeping restructure aimed at staying competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.
The layoffs come amid broader belt-tightening at Amazon, including recent job reductions across AWS, Prime Video, and Twitch. The Wondery cuts signal that even high-profile acquisitions aren't immune from budget scrutiny in 2025.
Splitting Wondery in Two
Amazon isn’t just trimming headcount—it’s reorganizing the entire Wondery unit. Narrative-driven podcasts, like Dr. Death and Dirty John, will now fall under Audible. Meanwhile, more personality-driven, creator-led shows—like New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce—will operate under a new unit called Creator Services.
Wondery CEO **Jen Sargent is stepping down** as a result of the changes. Her departure ends a leadership era that saw Wondery expand its content library, build subscription models, and attempt to carve out space in an increasingly video-dominated market.
According to Amazon VP of audio Steve Boom, the shake-up reflects a need for "dedicated teams with differentiated strategies" for narrative vs. creator content.

The YouTube Effect
Why now? Because **YouTube has changed the game**. Once an audio-first medium, podcasting has been pulled into the video era. Listeners are watching shows as much as hearing them, and platforms that fail to adapt are falling behind.
Amazon’s bet on Wondery was a $300 million gamble to build a premium podcast brand. But since the acquisition, video-native platforms have surged ahead, creating a more competitive environment for audio-only offerings.
This reorg is Amazon’s attempt to stay in the race by tailoring its approach: focusing Audible on deep storytelling, and Creator Services on audience engagement and monetization—areas where YouTube currently dominates.
What It Means for the Industry
Podcasting’s golden age is shifting. Consolidation, layoffs, and strategic realignment are becoming common as platforms reckon with fragmented audiences, shifting formats, and rising production costs.
For creators and media workers, Amazon’s latest move underscores a tough reality: even when demand for content is high, the business of podcasting is volatile. And as tech giants reposition, smaller players will have to adapt—or get squeezed out.
