Australia Cuts 950 Transport Jobs
Transport for NSW cuts 950 jobs to save $600M after pandemic hiring spree added 3,000 staff

Australia’s Transport Giant Slashes Nearly 1,000 Jobs
Transport for NSW is trimming its workforce in a big way—950 staff roles and 300 executive positions are being eliminated in a sweeping bid to rein in post-pandemic operational costs. It's one of the largest government-sector cutbacks in Australia this year and a sharp course correction after years of rapid hiring.
The announcement is part of a broader "financial sustainability" reform, aimed at streamlining operations after an aggressive hiring spree during the COVID years added over 3,000 new employees to the department’s ranks. That represented a 30% headcount increase in just five years.
Post-Pandemic Reality Check
Transport Secretary Josh Murray acknowledged that hiring during the pandemic got out of hand. At one point, the agency was reportedly creating two new executive roles every week for nearly two years.
Now, they’re centralizing services like communications, tech, and procurement to eliminate redundancies and reduce bureaucratic sprawl. The focus is on cutting back-office roles rather than frontline transport services, which Murray insists will remain unaffected by the shake-up.
Still, the scale of the cut is significant—and painful for the public servants impacted. Many teams are being collapsed, and previously independent units are being merged into centralized clusters.

The $600 Million Reset
The job cuts are just one part of a broader savings plan. Transport for NSW expects to save $600 million over the financial year through a combination of headcount reductions, executive downsizing, and slashing external contractor budgets.
“We have to get back to a model that is sustainable for the long term,” Murray wrote in a memo to staff. That includes not just budget balancing but redefining how the agency functions post-COVID, when demand patterns, remote work, and public spending priorities have all shifted.
While Transport for NSW has promised ongoing consultation with remaining staff, the decision is final for nearly 1,000 workers already receiving termination notices. For them, the pivot to sustainability comes with a steep personal cost.
